Re-analysis procedure based on the mixed formulation

An analysis procedure is presented for large-scale structural systems, with large numbers of degrees of freedom and design variables. The procedure uses a mixed formulation with the fundamental unknowns consisting of both stress and displacement parameters. Other elements of the procedure include: (1) lumping the design variables into a single tracing parameter; (2) operator splitting or additive decomposition of different arrays in the finite element equations into the corresponding arrays of the original structure plus correction terms; and (3) application of a reduction method through the use of the finite element method and the classical Bubnov-Galerkin technique. The re-analysis procedure is applied to the linear static and free vibration problems of plate and shell structures.

A large scale software system for simulation and design optimization of mechanical systems

The concept of an advanced integrated, networked simulation and design system is outlined. Such an advanced system can be developed utilizing existing codes without compromising the integrity and functionality of the system. An example has been used to demonstrate the applicability of the concept of the integrated system outlined here. The development of an integrated system can be done incrementally. Initial capabilities can be developed and implemented without having a detailed design of the global system. Only a conceptual global system must exist. For a fully integrated, user friendly design system, further research is needed in the areas of engineering data bases, distributed data bases, and advanced user interface design.

Uncertainty management in intelligent design aiding systems

A novel approach to uncertainty management which is particularly effective in intelligent design aiding systems for large-scale systems is presented. The use of this approach in the materials handling system design domain is discussed. It is noted that, during any point in the design process, a point value can be obtained for the evaluation of feasible designs; however, the techniques described provide unique solutions for these point values using only the current information about the design environment.

The equations of motion for a general orbiting large space flexible system

General motion equations in compact form using dyadic notation are developed for an orbiting flexible body of arbitrary shape. The equations are applied to three typical flexible space systems: a flexible beam, a flexible plate, and a flexible shallow spherical shell in orbit. The inertia dyadic of these flexible bodies may be calculated using the equations which have been obtained.

Approximate simulation model for analysis and optimization in engineering system design

Computational support of the engineering design process routinely requires mathematical models of behavior to inform designers of the system response to external stimuli. However, designers also need to know the effect of the changes in design variable values on the system behavior. For large engineering systems, the conventional way of evaluating these effects by repetitive simulation of behavior for perturbed variables is impractical because of excessive cost and inadequate accuracy. An alternative is described based on recently developed system sensitivity analysis that is combined with extrapolation to form a model of design. This design model is complementary to the model of behavior and capable of direct simulation of the effects of design variable changes.

Technology challenges for large spacecraft optical systems

The technology challenges posed by future NASA astrophysics missions in the visible region of the spectrum whose goals include making high resolution images of faint objects, and high accuracy measurements of the positions of brighter objects for dynamical studies are discussed. Concentration is on the problems associated with possible next generation great observatories in space in the post-Hubble Space Telescope, particularly those with partially filled apertures. Telescopes using interferometric techniques in the visible similar to those of radio VLBI hold the promise of providing high resolution astronomical measurements within reasonable launch constraints on mass and volume. Technology challenges in the optics, structures, and controls areas are addressed.

Solving the BM Camelopardalis puzzle

BM Camelopardalis (=12 Cam) is a chromospherically active binary star with a relatively large orbital eccentricity. Systems with large eccentricities usually rotate pseudosynchronously. However, BM Cam has been a puzzle since its observed rotation rate is virtually equal to its orbital period indicating synchronization. All available photometry data for BM Cam have been collected and analyzed. Two models of modulated ellipticity effect are proposed, one based on equilibrium tidal deformation of the primary star and the other on a dynamical tidal effect. When the starspot variability is removed from the data, the dynamical tidal model was the better approximation to the real physical situation. The analysis indicates that BM Cam is not rotating pseudosynchronously but rotating in virtual synchronism after all.

Dynamics and control of a large displacement suspension system for ground testing of flexible space structures

As the development in flexible space structures expands, the need for an efficient and accurate suspension system for ground tests increases accordingly. In this article, a disk suspension system was developed. Analytical results describing the dynamics of a passive and active suspension system were generated given realistic parameters of the system. These results for the passive case, were then compared with the data obtained from an experimental model with initial displacement and random forcing inputs. The dynamics of the system was analyzed. Results show that the experimental model resembles closely the analytical model and therefore strongly suggests feasibility of such a suspension system.

Electric Propulsion Technology Development for the Jupiter Icy Moons Orbiter Project

During 2004, the Jupiter Icy Moons Orbiter project, a part of NASA's Project Prometheus, continued efforts to develop electric propulsion technologies. These technologies addressed the challenges of propelling a spacecraft to several moons of Jupiter. Specific challenges include high power, high specific impulse, long lived ion thrusters, high power/high voltage power processors, accurate feed systems, and large propellant storage systems. Critical component work included high voltage insulators and isolators as well as ensuring that the thruster materials and components could operate in the substantial Jupiter radiation environment. A review of these developments along with future plans is discussed.

New Generation Power System for Space Applications

The Deep Space Avionics (DSA) Project is developing a new generation of power system building blocks. Using application specific integrated circuits (ASICs) and power switching modules a scalable power system can be constructed for use on multiple deep space missions including future missions to Mars, comets, Jupiter and its moons. The key developments of the DSA power system effort are five power ASICs and a mod ule for power switching. These components enable a modular and scalab le design approach, which can result in a wide variety of power syste m architectures to meet diverse mission requirements and environments . Each component is radiation hardened to one megarad) total dose. The power switching module can be used for power distribution to regular spacecraft loads, to propulsion valves and actuation of pyrotechnic devices. The number of switching elements per load, pyrotechnic firin gs and valve drivers can be scaled depending on mission needs. Teleme try data is available from the switch module via an I2C data bus. The DSA power system components enable power management and distribution for a variety of power buses and power system architectures employing different types of energy storage and power sources. This paper will describe each power ASIC#s key performance characteristics as well a s recent prototype test results. The power switching module test results will be discussed and will demonstrate its versatility as a multip urpose switch. Finally, the combination of these components will illu strate some of the possible power system architectures achievable fro m small single string systems to large fully redundant systems.

Large thermal protection system panel

A protective panel for a reusable launch vehicle provides enhanced moisture protection, simplified maintenance, and increased temperature resistance. The protective panel includes an outer ceramic matrix composite (CMC) panel, and an insulative bag assembly coupled to the outer CMC panel for isolating the launch vehicle from elevated temperatures and moisture. A standoff attachment system attaches the outer CMC panel and the bag assembly to the primary structure of the launch vehicle. The insulative bag assembly includes a foil bag having a first opening shrink fitted to the outer CMC panel such that the first opening and the outer CMC panel form a water tight seal at temperatures below a desired temperature threshold. Fibrous insulation is contained within the foil bag for protecting the launch vehicle from elevated temperatures. The insulative bag assembly further includes a back panel coupled to a second opening of the foil bag such that the fibrous insulation is encapsulated by the back panel, the foil bag, and the outer CMC panel. The use of a CMC material for the outer panel in conjunction with the insulative bag assembly eliminates the need for waterproofing processes, and ultimately allows for more efficient reentry profiles.
