A millimeter-wave reflection-beam isolator

A new and simple type of millimeter-wave isolator using a solid-state magnetoplasma in a reflection-beam system is described. Some data are presented showing performance at 94 GHz. Practical considerations indicate that performance should be much closer to ideal at higher frequencies.

Effect of grazing flow on steady-state resistance of isolated square-edged orifices

Steady state diagnostic testing of an isolated orifice has shown the nature of the interaction between grazing and orifice flow causing the large increase in orifice resistance for both inflow and outflow. A simple inviscid interaction model is developed which uses thin aerofoil theory to account for pressure forces exerted at the interface between the orifice and grazing flow together with a one-dimensional discharge coefficient concept. The effect of grazing flow boundary layer thickness is also included in the model. Resistance measurements for each orifice tested, over a wide range of grazing flow speeds and flow rates, collapse into a single curve when plotted in terms of effective discharge coefficient against orifice to grazing velocity ratio. The correlation curves for inflow and outflow are different. Data for clustered orifices collapse in the same way as those for the single orifice. The effect of boundary layer thickness is compared with model predictions.

An experimental and analytical investigation of effect on isolated boattail drag of varying Reynolds numbers up to 130,000,000

An investigation was conducted to determine whether large Reynolds number effects occur on isolated boattails, including an analytical study and tests in a 1/3-meter transonic cryogenic tunnel. This investigation was conducted at an angle of attack of 0 deg at Mach numbers from 0.6 to 0.9 for Reynolds numbers up to 130 million. Results indicate that as the Reynolds number was increased, the static pressure coefficients in the expansion region of the boattail became more negative whereas those in the recompression region became more positive. These two trends were compensating and, as a result, there was only a small effect (if any) of Reynolds numbers on boattail pressure drag.

Isolation and removal of waste products

Methods of isolation and elimination of waste products in spacecraft cabins are described. The role of waste products in the environment, collection and transport of waste products to storage containers, or to recovery systems, preservation of waste products, and storage and removal of waste products are among the factors discussed. Regeneration of the waste products to recover water and/or oxygen, is briefly considered.

Performance of an isolated two-dimensional wedge nozzle with fixed cowl and variable wedge centerbody at Mach numbers up to 2.01

A wind tunnel investigation has been conducted to determine the aeropropulsion performance (thrust minus drag) of an isolated, two-dimensional wedge nozzle with a simulated variable-wedge mechanism and a fixed cowl. The investigation was conducted statically and at Mach numbers from 0.60 to 1.20 in the Langley 16-foot transonic tunnel and at a Mach number of 2.01 in the Langley 4-foot supersonic pressure tunnel. The ratio of exhaust jet total pressure to free-stream static pressure was varied up to 27 depending on free-stream Mach number. The results indicate that the aeropropulsion performance of the two-dimensional fixed-cowl variable-wedge nozzle is slightly lower (0.7 to 1.4 percent of ideal thrust) than that achieved for a two-dimensional wedge nozzle with a translating shroud, although part of the difference in performance is attributed to internal-performance differences. The effects of cowl boattail angle, internal expansion area ratio, and wedge half-angle on the performance of the two-dimensional wedge nozzle are discussed.

Rotating stratified flow over finite isolated topography

Inviscid, steady, stratified rotating flow over a finite, isolated topographic feature is critically analyzed. The formulation is based on approximating the horizontal momentum by the geostrophic momentum. A boundary value problem governs the perturbation pressure field. The solution is an anticyclonic, topographically-bound vortex whose characteristics are independent of the upstream velocity but do depend on stratification, rotation, and the nature of the topography. The vortex is baroclinic in the vicinity of the mountain but barotropic in the far field. The velocity field is a combination of the bound vortex and an upstream velocity interacting with the perturbation pressure field. The effects of stratification, upstream velocity and the nature of the topography are investigated, and fluid trajectories are plotted.

A shock isolator for diode laser operation on a closed-cycle refrigerator

A device developed to isolate the diode laser from impact shocks delivered during the expansion phase of the Solvay cycle of a helium refrigerator is briefly described. The device uses intermediate cold stations in the stand-off, which permit the stand-off to be short and rigid while minimizing the thermal load at the diode mount.

An improved algorithm for the isolation of polynomial real zeros

THe Collins-Loos algorithm for computing isolating intervals for the zeros of an integer polynomial requires the evaluation of polynomials at rational points. This implies the use of arbitrary precision integer arithmetic. It is shown how careful use of single precision, floating point arithmetic within the context of a slightly modified algorithm can make the calculation considerably faster and no less exact. Typically, 95% or more of the evaluations can be done without exact arithmetic. The precise speedup depends on the relative costs of the arithmetic in a given implementation. The implementation on DEC KL-10 computer is some 5 to 10 times faster than the original Univac 1110 implementation in SAC-I.

Isolation and identification of the conidial germination factor of Neurospora crassa

The germination-essential substance (germination factor /GF/) that is lost from conidia of Neurospora crassa on exposure to solutions of low water activity has been isolated and identified as a group of iron-transport compounds, or siderochromes. The principal siderochrome of conidia is ferricrocin, a cyclic hexapeptide. A closely related substance, ferrichrome C, is tentatively identified as a minor constituent. The same substances are also present in extracts of mycelium along with small amounts of a third siderochrome, which has not been identified. The GF activity of culture filtrates is due to coprogen, the only siderochrome previously identified with N. crassa.

A high-voltage-isolated automated data acquisition system

A data acquisition system for electric-arc heated, high-temperature wind tunnel facilities has been developed; the high voltage isolation of the system exceeds 50 kV. A closed loop, optically coupled data system acquires transducer signals from high-temperature, arc-generated plasmas used for reentry testing. The data acquisition system monitors on-line tests, stores data on magnetic tape, and prints out a paper tape. The system has 400 data channels: 200 low-voltage programmable channels and 200 high-voltage sequential channels.

Concepts for the design of a completely active helicopter isolation system using output vector feedback

The theory of output vector feedback (a few measured quantities) is used to derive completely active oscillation isolation functions for helicopters. These feedback controller concepts are tested with various versions of the BO 105 helicopter and their performance is demonstrated. A compensation of the vibrational excitations from the rotor and harmonics of the number of blades are considered. There is also a fast and automatic trim function for maneuvers.

Robotics control using isolated word recognition of voice input

A speech input/output system is presented that can be used to communicate with a task oriented system. Human speech commands and synthesized voice output extend conventional information exchange capabilities between man and machine by utilizing audio input and output channels. The speech input facility is comprised of a hardware feature extractor and a microprocessor implemented isolated word or phrase recognition system. The recognizer offers a medium sized (100 commands), syntactically constrained vocabulary, and exhibits close to real time performance. The major portion of the recognition processing required is accomplished through software, minimizing the complexity of the hardware feature extractor.

Isolation and confinement - Considerations for colonization

This paper discusses three types of isolation (sensory/perceptual, temporal, and social) that could adversely affect mankind in space. The literature dealing with laboratory and field experiments relevant to these areas is summarized and suggestions are given for dealing with these problems within the space colony community. Also, consideration is given to the potential effects of physical confinement and the need for usable space. Finally, a modification of Maslow's hierarchy of needs is proposed as a theoretical framework to understand and investigate mankind's psychological needs in space.
