How fast can an asteroid spin

Many large asteroids are probably gravitationally bound 'rubble piles', which should approximate figures of hydrostatic equilibrium. The maximum angular velocity of such bodies is limited by formation of Jacobi ellipsoids or binary fission at about half the surface orbit frequency. The observed limiting rotation period of approximately 4 hr implies asteroidal densities of about 2-3 g/cu cm.

Outline of a fast hardware implementation of Winograd's DFT algorithm

The main characteristics of the discrete Fourier transform (DFT) algorithm considered by Winograd (1976) is a significant reduction in the number of multiplications. Its primary disadvantage is a higher structural complexity. It is, therefore, difficult to translate the reduced number of multiplications into faster execution of the DFT by means of a software implementation of the algorithm. For this reason, a hardware implementation is considered in the current study, taking into account a design based on the algorithm prescription discussed by Zohar (1979). The hardware implementation of a FORTRAN subroutine is proposed, giving attention to a pipelining scheme in which 5 consecutive data batches are being operated on simultaneously, each batch undergoing one of 5 processing phases.

A fast and accurate radiance algorithm for application to inversion of limb measurements

A method is devised to accurately calculate broad band limb radiance based on a precalculated data base consisting of homogeneous path emissivity as a function of mass path data for various temperatures and pressures. Accurately estimating limb radiance by splicing together interpolated information from the emissivity curves requires no temperature or pressure weighting, and only two interpolations per layer path. The emissivity growth approximation (EGA) technique is applied in a simulated inversion study to the inference of O3, H2O, NO2 and HNO3, and it is found to have comparable accuracies to more sophisticated many-degree band models. The EGA technique is also found to be two orders of magnitude faster, while requiring one second per inversion for one constituent at one-km resolution, allowing a completely nonlinear relaxation time inversion to be done at linear speeds. The technique is also expected to work well for nadir calculations, and prove adequate for estimating occultation radiances.

CAS22 - FORTRAN program for fast design and analysis of shock-free airfoil cascades using fictitious-gas concept

A user-oriented computer program, CAS22, was developed that is applicable to aerodynamic analysis and transonic shock-free redesign of existing two-dimensional cascades of airfoils. This FORTRAN program can be used: (1) as an analysis code for full-potential, transonic, shocked or shock-free cascade flows; (2) as a design code for shock-free cascades that uses Sobieczky's fictitious-gas concept; and (3) as a shock-free design code followed automatically by the analysis in order to confirm that the newly obtained cascade shape provides for an entirely shock-free transonic flow field. A four-level boundary-conforming grid of an O type is generated. The shock-free design is performed by implementing Sobieczky's fictitious-gas concept of elliptic continuation from subsonic into supersonic flow domains. Recomputation inside each supersonic zone is performed by the method of characteristics in the rheograph plane by using isentropic gas relations. Besides converting existing cascade shapes with multiple shocked supersonic regions into shock-free cascades, CAS22 can also unchoke previously choked cascades and make them shock free.

Fast polarization changes in mm microwave emission of weak multistructured solar bursts

Circular polarization of weak multistructured solar bursts was measured at mm microwaves with unprecedented sensitivity (0.03 sfu rms) and high time resolution (1ms). It was shown that sudden changes occur in the degree of polarization with time scales of 0.04 to 0.3 s. In most cases the degree of polarization attained maximum values before the maximum flux in both mm microwaves and hard X-rays with time scales of 0.04 to 1.0 s. The timing accuracy in determining the degree of polarization was 40 ms. Physical phenomena are discussed invoking one or a combination of various possible causes for the observed effects. The bursts at mm microwaves were weak compared to the contribution of the preexisting active regions, and therefore the changes in magnetoionic propagation conditions for emerging radiation plays an important role in the observed effects. Composite effects due to more than one polarizing mechanism or more than one polarized spots within the antenna beam are discussed.

Eikonal approximation for charge transfer from a multielectron atom to fast projectiles

The eikonal approach developed previously for calculating electron-capture cross sections for bare projectiles colliding with hydrogenic targets is extended here to allow for multielectron targets. Both the impact and wave pictures are employed and their equivalence is discussed. As a first approximation, each atomic orbital is specified by the three hydrogenic quantum numbers, an effective nuclear charge Z sub t, and an energy eigenvalue in the impact picture, or ionization potential in the wave picture. The Z sub t prime appearing in the eikonal phase factor is left undetermined because of incomplete information on the many-body target. However, analytic expressions are derived for the theoretical cross sections, and numerical values are calculated for simple choices of Z sub t prime. Those results are compared with existing experimental data for C, Ne, Ar, N2, O2, and He targets.

A critical velocity interaction between fast barium and strontium atoms and the terrestial ionospheric plasma

A disk of barium and strontium vapor traveling radially outward, perpendicular to the geomagnetic field lines, may be created by the detonation of a high-explosive, radially shaped charge with a liner composed of the two metals in the upper atmosphere. Because of solar radiation resonance, both the barium and the strontium may be optically tracked. Observations indicate the early formation of the metal ions thus evolved into a disk-shaped, stellate structure with a dark hole at the center of a radial structure. The results of these experiments indicate that the process could occur on a cosmic scale, and that unconfirmed aspects of the theory relating to this process could be determined through variation of the parameters in future radial rocket experiments.

A new, fast X-ray pulsar in the supernova remnant MSH 15-52

A pulsing X-ray source has been discovered within the shell of the supernova remnant MSH 15-52. The period is 0.150 s, and the rate of increase of period with time is the highest measured for any pulsar. These characteristics and the fact that the pulsar is surrounded by a small, bright nebula indicate that this object is very similar to the Crab pulsar.

Theory and implementation of a fast algorithm linear equalizer

The theory and implementation of a multiplication-free linear mean-square error criterion equalizer for data transmission are considered. For many real-time signal processing situations, a large number of multiplications is objectionable. The linear estimation problem on a binary computer is considered where the estimation parameters are constrained to be powers of two and thus all multiplications are replaced by shifts. The optimal solution is obtained from an integer-programming-like problem except that the allowable discrete points are non-integers. The branch-and-bound algorithm is used to obtain the coefficients of the equalization TDL. Specific experimental performance results are given for an equalizer implemented with a 12 bit A/D device and a 8080 microprocessor.

NECAP 4.1: NASA's Energy-Cost Analysis Program fast input manual and example

NASA's Energy-Cost Analysis Program (NECAP) is a powerful computerized method to determine and to minimize building energy consumption. The program calculates hourly heat gain or losses taking into account the building thermal resistance and mass, using hourly weather and a response factor method. Internal temperatures are allowed to vary in accordance with thermostat settings and equipment capacity. NECAP 4.1 has a simplified input procedure and numerous other technical improvements. A very short input method is provided. It is limited to a single zone building. The user must still describe the building's outside geometry and select the type of system to be used.

Fast Euler solver for steady, 1-dimensional flows

A numerical technique to solve the Euler equations for steady, one dimensional flows is presented. The technique is essentially implicit, but is structured as a sequence of explicit solutions for each Riemann variable separately. Each solution is obtained by integrating in the direction prescribed by the propagation of the Riemann variables. The technique is second-order accurate. It requires very few steps for convergence, and each step requires a minimal number of operations. Therefore, it is three orders of magnitude more efficient than a standard time-dependent technique. The technique works very well for transonic flows and provides shock fitting with errors as small as 0.001. Results are presented for subsonic problems. Errors are evaluated by comparison with exact solutions.

A fast microprocessor communication network design for interprocessor communications for an integrated flight control system

A node design with connectivity four is presented whose communication processor handles data at four million bits/sec on each of the four channels into the node, and on each of the four channels out of the node, for a total node capacity of 32 million bits/sec. An integrated flight control system real-time application of this communication network design is discussed. It is shown that such high speed node communication hardware, arranged in the topological configuration of a minimum diameter graph with connectivity four and all links active, has good potential for real time control applications requiring reliability, availability, and survivability characteristics.
