Estimating the Electric Fields Driving Lightning Dart Leader Development With BIMAP‐3D Observations

Abstract In this paper, a numerical dart leader model has been implemented to understand the leader's development and the corresponding electric field changes observed by the 3D broadband mapping and polarization (BIMAP‐3D) system. The model assumes the extending leader channel is equipotential and has a linear charge distribution induced by an ambient electric field. The charge distribution induced by the ambient field can be used to model the electric field change at the ground. We then find the ambient electric field which best fits the field change measurements at the two BIMAP stations. The estimated ambient electric field decreases in the direction of dart leader propagation. Our observations and modeling results are consistent with our earlier hypothesis that dart leader speed is proportional to the electric field at the leader tip. The model also supports our earlier analysis that leader speed variations near branch junctions were due to previous charge deposits near the junctions. The modeled tip electric field is generally lower than the breakdown field unless the pre‐dart‐leader channel has a significant temperature of 3,000 K. This is consistent with the fact that dart leaders typically do not form new branches into the virgin air. Furthermore, the tip field is generally close to the negative streamer stability field at ambient temperatures, explaining the nature of the narrow and well‐defined channel structure. In addition to the charge distribution and the ambient and tip electric field, the development of the channel potential and current distribution are also presented.

Impact of Dilute DIO Additive on Local Microstructure of Fluorinated, pNDI‐Based Polymer Solar Cells

The performance of all‐polymer solar cells is often enhanced by incorporating solvent additives during solution processing. Here, in particular, blends based on the model all‐polymer system PBDBT:N2200 have been shown to have increased short‐circuit current and fill factor when processed with dilute diiodooctane (DIO). However, the morphological mechanism that drives the increase in performance is often not well understood due to limitations in common characterization techniques. In this study, it is shown that a combination of X‐ray techniques with cryogenic high‐resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) analysis can provide a quantitative and spatially resolved picture of polymer chain orientation and alignment in all‐polymer blends. It is found that DIO induces vertical phase separation in PBDBT‐2F:F‐N2200 and increases donor crystallite thickness in the pi‐stacking direction leading to an acceptor‐rich film surface. However, it is also shown that DIO does not disrupt the formation of face‐on donor–acceptor interfaces. These findings suggest that dilute DIO primarily affects crystalline domain formation in single component regions as opposed to mixed regions; thus, dilute DIO can impact vertical charge transport pathways without sacrificing donor–acceptor interfacial connectivity.

Emergent topological polarization textures in relaxor ferroelectrics

Relaxor ferroelectrics underpin high-performance actuators and sensors, yet the nature of polar heterogeneities driving their broadband dielectric response remains debated. Using a unified, multimodal structural refinement framework— simultaneously fitting complementary X-ray and neutron total scattering, X-ray absorption spectra, and diffuse scattering—we reconstruct 3D mesoscale polarization maps in the classic relaxor system PbMg 1/3 Nb 2/3 O 3 –PbTiO 3 . We uncover self-organized swirling polarization textures with half-skyrmion (meron) vortices, challenging models of independent polar nanoregions. These textures, characterized by smooth changes in the polarization direction, originate from overlapping volumes in which the projections of locally correlated polarization vectors onto each volume’s long axis share the same sign. Vortex cores correlate strongly with local charge and strain gradients imposed by compositional heterogeneities. In this work, our results suggest that chemical disorder, acting via depolarizing and strain fields, stabilizes topological vortex textures of the polarization field, offering a route for engineering new dielectric and ferroelectric functionalities.

A metastable tetragonal phase in two-dimensional halide perovskite lattices driven by a coherent Higgs mode

The optoelectronic properties of metal halide perovskites are defined by their coupled structural and photophysical properties, yet their lattice behaviour remains underexplored. Here, using impulsive stimulated Raman spectroscopy, we study light-induced phonon dynamics of two-dimensional butylammonium lead iodide ((BA) 2 PbI 4 ) films under varying excitation intensities, photon energies and temperatures. We reveal that, whereas (BA) 2 PbI 4 exhibits two thermally accessible orthorhombic phases, optically excited phonons transiently direct the lattice to a distinct, higher symmetry tetragonal phase. We show that bandgap oscillations arise from simultaneous distortions of in-plane and out-of-plane octahedral tilt angles with oscillations following a low-to-high symmetry pathway, marked by two vibrational frequencies independent of intensity—a signature of an optically excited Higgs mode. Notably, the Higgs mode at below-bandgap excitation induces a fourfold larger spectral shift than above-bandgap, where photogenerated charge carriers drive the system away from the optically induced tetragonal phase. This study illustrates how optomechanical coupling influences the optical properties of two-dimensional perovskites.

Waveform-dependent air fluorescence from neutral and ionic nitrogen molecules

Laser-induced air fluorescence in the ultraviolet regime is primarily attributed to transitions between the C and B states in excited neutral N 2 molecules and between the B and X states in N$^+_2$ ions. However, the mechanism underlying the former remains contentious, as direct population to the C state by light fields is forbidden by electron spin constraints. In this work, we investigate the mechanism of air fluorescence from excited neutral N 2 molecules by carrier-envelope phase–stabilized sub–4 femtosecond pulses. Our results show that fluorescence from N$^+_2$ ions reaches a maximum with cosine-like pulses, while fluorescence from excited neutral N 2 molecules peaks with sine-like pulses. In addition, by scanning the chirp of the driving pulse, we find that ionic fluorescence is maximized with chirp-free pulses, whereas neutral fluorescence favors negatively chirped pulses. These observations, supported by classical trajectory Monte Carlo simulations, support the mechanism of intersystem crossing from excited spin-singlet states, which are populated via recollision-induced strong-field excitation.

Conceptual Design Report -- eSPS

The design of a primary electron beam facility at CERN is described. It re-enables the SPS as an electron accelerator, and leverages the development invested in CLIC technology for its injector and as accelerator R&D infrastructure. The facility would be relevant for several of the key priorities in the 2020 update of the European Strategy for Particle Physics, such as an electron-positron(e-p) Higgs factory, accelerator R&D, dark sector physics, and neutrino physics. In addition, it could serve experiments in nuclear physics. The electron beam delivered by this facility would provide access to light dark matter production significantly beyond the targets predicted by a thermal dark matter origin, and for natures of dark matter particles that are not accessible by direct detection experiments. It would also enable electro-nuclear measurements crucial for precise modelling the energy dependence of neutrino-nucleus interactions, which is needed to precisely measure neutrino oscillations as a function of energy. The implementation of the facility is the natural next step in the development of X-band high-gradient acceleration technology, a key technology for compact and cost-effective electron/positron linacs. It would also become the only facility with multi-GeV drive bunches and truly independent electron witness bunches for plasma wakefield acceleration. The facility would be used for the development and studies of a large number of components and phenomena for a future e-p Higgs and electroweak factory as the first stage of a next circular collider at CERN, and its cavities in the SPS would be the same type as foreseen for such a future collider. The operation of the SPS with electrons would train a new generation of scientists. The facility could be made operational in about five years and would operate in parallel and without interference with Run 4 at the LHC.

Carbon Corrosion in CO2 Electrolysis Systems

Driven by concerns over climate change, interest in CO2 conversion technologies has dramatically increased in recent years. By viewing CO2 as a readily available feedstock, many pathways for the production of carbon-neutral fuels and chemicals become available. In converting CO2, low carbon emitting energy sources must be used to ensure a low carbon footprint of the fuel and chemical products. The low-temperature electrochemical conversion of CO2 is a promising technology and allows for direct integration with renewable electricity sources. The development of low-temperature CO2 electrolysis technologies is informed by both PEM fuel cells and water electrolyzers, both of which are at a higher stage of development. However, CO2 electrolysis operates at a much higher cell voltage (-3V) than other low-temperature electrochemical processes, which can have implications for materials compatibility in the electrolyzer device. Carbon corrosion is of particular concern for the anode of CO2 electrolyzers, as a large driving force for corrosion exists due to the high required cell potentials. In this presentation, recent observations will be shared on carbon corrosion of the anode gas diffusion electrode (GDE) in low-temperature alkaline exchange membrane CO2 electrolysis. Results from ex-situ tests designed to isolate the carbon corrosion process for anode GDEs will be shared. These results will provide guidance on materials selection for CO2 utilization MEAs, which need to have a lifetime of several years to ensure industrial viability.

Succinate based polymers drive immunometabolism in dendritic cells to generate cancer immunotherapy

Boosting the metabolism of immune cells while restricting cancer cell metabolism is challenging. Herein, we report that using biomaterials for the controlled delivery of succinate metabolite to phagocytic immune cells activates them and modulates their metabolism in the presence of metabolic inhibitors. In young immunocompetent mice, polymeric microparticles, with succinate incorporated in the backbone, induced strong pro-inflammatory anti-melanoma responses. Administration of poly(ethylene succinate) (PES MP)-based vaccines and glutaminase inhibitor to young immunocompetent mice with aggressive and large, established B16F10 melanoma tumors increased their survival three-fold, a result of increased cytotoxic T cells expressing RORγT (Tc17). Mechanistically, PES MPs directly modulate glutamine and glutamate metabolism, upregulate succinate receptor SUCNR1, activate antigen presenting cells through and HIF-1alpha, TNFa and TSLP-signaling pathways, and are dependent on alpha-ketoglutarate dehydrogenase for their activity, which demonstrates correlation of succinate delivery and these pathways. Altogether, our findings suggest that immunometabolism-modifying PES MP strategies provide an approach for developing robust cancer immunotherapies.
