NaK-nitrogen liquid metal MHD converter tests at 30 kW.

Description of the tests performed and test results obtained in an experiment where a NaK-nitrogen liquid metal MHD converter was operated over a range of nozzle inlet pressures of 100 to 165 N per sq cm, NaK flow rates of 46 to 72 kg/sec, and nitrogen flow rates of 3.4 to 3.8 kg/sec. The test results indicate: (1) smooth and stable operation, (2) absence of unexpected electrical or flow losses, and (3) possibility of operation with the expected full power output of 30 kW.

Image data rate converter having a drum with a fixed head and a rotatable head

A data-rate converter is disclosed comprising a rotatable data-storing drum with at least one fixed read/record head and a rotatable read/record head. The latter is rotatable in a circular path about the drum axis of rotation. The drum is positionable in any one of a plurality of axial positions with respect to the heads, so that at least one drum track is aligned with the fixed head in one drum position and with the rotatable head in another drum position. When a track is aligned with the fixed head, data may be recorded therin or read out therefrom at a rate which is a function of drum rotation, while when aligned with the rotatable head, data may be recorded or read out at a rate which is a function of the rates and directions of rotation of both the drum and the head.

Engineering information on an Analog Signal to Discrete Time Interval Converter (ASDT-IC)

An electronic control system for nondissipative dc power converters is presented which improves (1) the routinely attainable static output voltage accuracy to the order of + or - 1% for ambient temperatures from -55 to 100 C and (2) the dynamic stability by utilizing approximately one tenth of the feedback gain needed otherwise. Performance is due to a functional philosophy of deterministic pulse modulation based on pulse area control and to an autocompensated signal processing principle. The system can be implemented with commercially available unselected components.

Performance characteristics of proximity focused ultraviolet image converters

Performance characteristics of Bendix type BX 8025-4522 proximity focused image tubes for UV to visible light conversion are presented. Quantum efficiency, resolution, background, geometric distortion, and environmental test results are discussed. The converters use magnesium fluoride input windows with Cs-Te photocathodes and P-11 phosphors on fiber optic output windows.

NaK-nitrogen liquid metal MHD converter tests at 30 kw

The feasibility of electrical power generation with an ambient temperature liquid-metal MHD separator cycle is demonstrated by tests in which a NaK-nitrogen LM-MHD converter was operated at nozzle inlet pressures ranging from 100 to 165 N/sq cm, NaK flow rates from 46 to 72 kg/sec, and nitrogen flow rates from 2.4 to 3.8 kg/sec. The generator was operated as an eight-phase linear induction generator, with two of the eight phases providing magnetic field compensation to minimized electrical end losses at the generator channel inlet and exit.

Resonantly two-photon pumped frequency converter

This letter describes a resonantly two-photon pumped frequency converter with application to the generation of tunable ultraviolet and vacuum ultraviolet radiation and also to infrared-to-visible up-conversion and imaging. Calculations show that up-conversion power efficiencies in excess of 100% should be obtained with tunable dye lasers having peak powers in the hundred watt to kilowatt range.

The Ranicon - A resistive anode image converter

A versatile photon and charged particle imaging system is described. The Ranicon employs a microchannel electron multiplier plate to convert each detected event into a charge signal. This charge pulse is proximity-focused onto a large-area resistive anode plate equipped with pickup electrodes on its edges. Each event is located electronically by the ratios of the charges collected at the edges or by the differences of the signals' risetimes. One- or two-dimensional pictures are built up by storing events digitally (e.g., a core memory) or in analog form (e.g., a storage oscilloscope). Compact laboratory models have been constructed and tested. Operating characteristics, applications, limitations, and advantages of the Ranicon are discussed.

Laser-to-electricity energy converter for short wavelengths

Short-wavelength energy converter can be made using Schottky barrier structure. It has wider band gap than p-n junction silicon semiconductors, and thus it has improved response at wavelengths down to and including ultraviolet region.

Hybrid-mode thermionic converter

Converter's collector electrode has uniform low work-function surface and operates at sufficiently low temperature to produce negligible electron emission. Emitter electrode has main region which has intermediate work-function and auxiliary region which has relatively high work-function surface.

A nonsaturating dc-to-dc parallel power converter

Device is conventional circuit modified with pair of diode rectifiers coupled to switching transistors via feedback winding. Transient-causing collector-current overlap between transistors is eliminated. Technique may be used with nonsaturating parallel-transistor converters operating from voltage source which remains fixed or varies over small range.

Standard interface: Twin-coaxial converter

The network operations control center standard interface has been adopted as a standard computer interface for all future minicomputer based subsystem development for the Deep Space Network. Discussed is an intercomputer communications link using a pair of coaxial cables. This unit is capable of transmitting and receiving digital information at distances up to 600 m with complete ground isolation between the communicating devices. A converter is described that allows a computer equipped with the standard interface to use the twin coaxial link.

Resistive anode image converter

The invention of an apparatus for imaging soft X-ray and ultraviolet electromagnetic radiation and charged particles was described. The apparatus includes a pair of microchannel electron multiplier plates connected in a cascaded chevron configuration which intercepts an incident beam of radiation or charged particles. Incident photons or charged particles strike the front surface of the chevron configuration causing emission of electrons. The electrons are accelerated by a voltage gradient and strike the inner side walls of the individual channels, causing emission of secondary electrons. Accelerated and multiplied secondary electrons impinge upon a resistive anode after they transverse the chevron configuration. A pulse position circuit converts the magnitude or transit time of the currents flowing from the point of impact of the electrons on the resistive anode to four contact electrodes mounted on their periphery of the resistive anode into the spatial coordinates of electron impact.

NO sub X destruction by CO in NO sub X to NO converters of chemiluminescent NO analyzers

An instrument modification for chemiluminescent NO - NOx analyzers was developed which minimizes the NOx destruction in the NOx to NO converters of NO analyzers due to high concentrations of CO. This mechanism causes the NO analyzers to indicate incorrect NOx concentrations when the analyzers are operated in the NOx analysis mode. The modification is applicable to analyzers in which the detection chamber is evacuated.
