Discrete Graph Structure Learning for Forecasting Multiple Time Series

Time series forecasting is an extensively studied subject in statistics, economics, and computer science. Exploration of the correlation and causation among the variables in a multivariate time series shows promise in enhancing the performance of a time series model. When using deep neural networks as forecasting models, we hypothesize that exploiting the pairwise information among multiple (multivariate) time series also improves their forecast. If an explicit graph structure is known, graph neural networks (GNNs) have been demonstrated as powerful tools to exploit the structure. In this work, we propose learning the structure simultaneously with the GNN if the graph is unknown. We cast the problem as learning a probabilistic graph model through optimizing the mean performance over the graph distribution. The distribution is parameterized by a neural network so that discrete graphs can be sampled differentiably through reparameterization. Empirical evaluations show that our method is simpler, more efficient, and better performing than a recently proposed bilevel learning approach for graph structure learning, as well as a broad array of forecasting models, either deep or non-deep learning based, and graph or non-graph based.

A Lyapunov-Based Generalized Dc-Side Controller Design for PV-Connected Systems: Preprint

The objective of this paper is to realize a universal dc-side controller for photovoltaic (PV) systems where the control is agnostic to the downstream converter configuration. To achieve this, the downstream power converter and its controls are manipulated into an effective power control loop that is then cast into a generalized multi-loop design framework. On the dc side, a nonlinear small-signal model of the PV input is realized exclusively in terms of PV datasheet parameters (i.e., open-circuit voltage, short-circuit current, and maximum power point). Finally, a linear controller is used to modulate the dc-side PV system with the generic downstream power controller. A Lyapunov candidate is proposed to analyze the stability of the interconnected system and provide a streamlined approach for the controller design. The proposed design is validated on a 1-kVA experimental setup that interfaces a PV module to the grid.

High Assay Low Enriched Uranium - A material in demand and the supply efforts underway

The presentation briefly describes the HALEU demand, sources of supply, & work underway @ INL to meet some of the demand. It highlights HALEU recovery from EBR-II, process enhancements including recasting via multi tier drip cast crucible method to produce reduced dose and reduced physical size uranium ingots referred to as regulus. Includes additional polishing, to improve applicability to meeting HALEU needs and briefly touches on innovative recycling concepts under development (i.e. Zircex). HALEU enables reactors of reduced size, provides for increased fuel efficiency and longer core life, all of which contribute to less waste generation. Supplying HALEU from recycled material has the potential for further reductions in waste generation through via reductions in SNF disposition.

A PIC Bootstrapping Strategy for Exascale CFD-DEM Simulation

The exascale computing era comes with the release of MFIX-Exa, a new code for studying gas-particle fluidization using CFD-DEM and PIC models on massively parallel, heterogeneous high-performance computing architectures. However, as compute resources continue to grow in scale and complexity, so too does the impetus to use them efficiently. Here, we propose a novel bootstrapping method to minimize neglected simulation time and cast the approach more broadly among a growing field of multi-fidelity methods.

Scintillator array for radiation detection

A radiation detector includes a photodetector and a scintillator coupled thereto. The scintillator is formed of a scintillator material comprising an organic glass scintillator (OGS) material and at least one of a polymer additive or a plasticizer additive. The scintillator emits light when radiation is received at the scintillator, and the light is received by the photodetector. The radiation detector can further include a frame that has an interior cavity that holds the scintillator in position with respect to the photodetector, such that the light emitted by the scintillator is transmitted to the photodetector. The scintillator can be formed by casting amorphous scintillator material in the interior cavity of the frame. The frame can then be coupled to the photodetector to form the radiation detector.

Examining Light-Induced Degradation with Combined-Accelerated Stress Testing

While further understanding is sought, the results suggest that a module can show no degradation in performance through a qualification test light soak, (IEC 61215: 2021 MQT 19.1 requirement of 10 kW minimum on one side). Yet, such cells may degrade significantly by LID under conditions within the statistical extremes of the natural environment applied in combined-accelerated stress testing (CAST).

Methods, systems, and apparatuses for calculating global fluence for neutron and photon monte carlo transport using expected value estimators

Global fluence estimators may be calculated on accelerators and processors for neutron and photon Monte Carlo transport. Monte Carlo random walk simulation may be performed on the processors and the calculation of a Volumetric-Ray-Casting (VRC) estimator may be offloaded to the accelerators. The VRC estimator may modify an expected-value estimator to extend a pseudo-particle ray along the direction of the emitted particle from source and collision event through not only the event volume, but also through all volumes that describe the problem geometry. Additionally, many pseudo-particle rays may be sampled per event, rather than just a single pseudo-particle ray per event, in order to provide more complete angular coverage.

Enhanced Sustainability in Treatment of Contaminated Metals for Clearance and Recycling - 20290

Cyclife Sweden AB has, for more than 30 years, provided metal treatment services to the domestic and international nuclear industry with the aim of creating value through metal clearance and recycling. These operations are to a large extent based on the concept that the materials, after pre-treatment, including decontamination, will be melted for clearance. During the melting process, some nuclides separate from the metal while the remaining radioactivity becomes fully homogenized in the metal bath and the resulting ingots, along with the samples taken before casting At a time when activities to fight Climate Challenge are in focus, any savings in energy consumption, in addition to the positive environmental effect of recycling metals back to industry, is more than welcome. If the clearance of certain metallic items can be achieved safely, without using melting, it is the environmentally preferred option provided it carries a reasonable cost. It is even better if an object can go through a decontamination and clearance process prior to re-use inside or outside the nuclear sector. Cyclife Sweden is currently investing in a direct clearance process, to be operated in parallel with the melting process. This new process is expected to be fully operational in the late summer of 2020 and includes pre-treatment, decontamination and heavily shielded clearance measurement installations. The treatment will also allow clearance measurements of larger objects without the need for segmentation, along with allowing objects composed of different materials, like electric motors can be accepted for treatment. This paper gives an overview of the circular economy aspects in a nuclear back-end context, the Cyclife approach to further implement a circular economy approach in the processes, Material Acceptance Criteria for treatment, the facility set-up for the new process and how the melting route and the direct route can be combined in an efficient industrial scale process. To put the new capabilities into perspective, the two different treatment and clearance approaches, i.e. direct clearance and melting, are to be compared. (authors)

Field-Scale Lysimeter Studies of Glass and Cementitious Waste Forms at the Hanford Site - 20392

The Hanford site Integrated Disposal Facility (IDF) will receive waste forms from vitrification activities at the Hanford Waste Treatment and Immobilization Plant (WTP). The waste form inventory to be disposed of at the IDF will consist of vitrified low-activity waste (LAW) in glass forms and solidified (or encapsulated) secondary wastes in cementitious forms. The IDF is a near-surface burial facility located near Hanford's Waste Treatment and Immobilization Plant in the 200 East Area of the site's Central Plateau. An extensive set of laboratory experimental data has been collected to support IDF performance assessment calculations of the eventual degradation of waste forms and mobility of contaminants. This paper describes the start of a field experiment to generate waste-form performance data on a larger scale (tens of centimeters), over a longer duration (five years or more), and under field conditions representative of the IDF. Results from this study are expected to improve model descriptions of contaminant mobility, reduce uncertainties about the representativeness of laboratory results in the IDF performance assessment, improve stakeholder confidence in the safe disposal of treated waste at the IDF, and facilitate the adoption of informed facility designs with the potential to reduce operational costs. A lysimeter test facility near Hanford's 200 West Area has been repurposed to carry out long-term assessments of waste forms buried in sediments excavated from the IDF. The waste forms are buried in large drainage lysimeters, open caissons that are two meters in diameter and three meters deep. Waste forms are buried in up to six locations in each lysimeter. Samplers collect pore water and drainage water beneath the waste forms and air from the pore space adjacent to waste forms. Sensors measure temperature, soil water content, soil water tension, and drainage flux. One lysimeter containing cementitious waste forms and one containing glass waste forms have been completed, along with a control lysimeter (without waste forms). The cementitious waste forms are Cast Stone grout formulations using a liquid secondary waste simulant and a generic Hanford high-salt simulant, as well as a hydrated lime-based grout formulation using a liquid secondary waste simulant. Technetium-99 and iodine-127 were added as tracers to monitor contaminant mobility. Glass waste forms were fabricated in two formulations (LAWA44 and ORLEC28), with rhenium and molybdenum tracers to monitor waste form degradation. The predicted performance of the waste forms in the lysimeters was modeled prior to installation to determine waste form size, tracer concentration/activity, and locations of sensors and samplers. GPR Robotic Assisted Non-Destructive Evaluation of Concrete Structures - 20196

Reinforced concrete structures are always under exposure of internal or external deteriorations due to many factors such as environmental, nuclear radiation or even construction deficiencies. The use of nondestructive test is one of the reliable methods to inspect structural members. In this case, GPR has a good capability to detect inside deteriorations of concrete structures. However, in many cases it is hard to inspect structural members by hand due to safety issues or inaccessibility. Thus, an alternative way to reduce such risks is to employ robot to carry nondestructive equipment. In this research, twelve reinforced concrete RC beams (8 x 16 x 96, width, height and length) are cast in the lab. Three RC beams have no defect and nine others various defects such as corrosion, de-bonded bars, void, delamination and honeycombing. The one-point load is applied at the center of the RC beam. The loading level is carried out at three levels: 50%, 75% and 100% of maximum load and total load-displacement diagram are performed. The load is held at each level and the robotic GPR is used to scan the side of RC beams. Then, RADAN software is employed to find out any defects at different loading conditions and visualize the crack propagation. The RADAN results show that the pattern of crack propagation for corrosion and debonding are same. Also, the load-displacement results present that inside defect cause reduction of load-capacity of RC beam. (authors)
