Secondary Stresses in Open Box Beams Subjected to Torsion

In open box beams subjected to torsion, secondary stresses arise owing to lateral bending of the spar caps. The present paper outlines a simple method for estimating the magnitude of these stresses and gives the results of tests of an open box beam in the neighborhood of a discontinuity where the cover changed from the top to the bottom of the box.

Compact holographic memory using E - O beam steering

An innovative holographic memory system has been developed at JPL for high-density and high speed data storage in a space environment. This system ulitlizes a newly developed electro-optic (E-O) beam steering technology for beam steering to enable high-speed random access memory read/write without moving parts. Recently, a compact CD-sized holographic memory broadboard has been developed and demonstrated for holographic data storage adn retrieval. Detail technical progress will be presented in this paper.

A Novel Design Technique for Beam-Waveguide Antennas

The new 34-m beam-waveguide (BWG) antenna at Goldstone has a beam magnifier ellipse below ground level that transforms a 22-dB gain feedhorn into a high-gain 29-dB gain pattern for input to a standard four-mirror BWG system. It was initially designed for the X- an Ka-bands, and has a loss of less than 0.2 dB.

High-Vacuum Condenser Design: Experimental Effects from Cesium and Mercury Ion Beams

Effects of variable-energy electrostatic rocket-engine ion exhaust beams that pertain to the design of high-vacuum condensers are discussed. Three ion-engine beam sources, using cesium and mercury as propellants, were operated at energy levels of 200 to 9000 electron volts and currents of 0.002 to 0.200 ampere. Five condenser geometries, having surface areas from 0.287 to 5.76 square meters, were tested. Values for a function of the accommodation and condensation coefficients, which appears in an existing theoretical analysis, were determined. Although exhibiting rather wide variations in some tests, the values were estimated at approximately 0.15 for cesium and 0.015 for mercury. A method of estimating condenser surface area requirements is given.

Laser beam hydrocarbon detector

Portable instrument passes light from helium-neon laser at a wavelength of 3.39 microns through the atmosphere being monitored and measures attenuation of the laser beam. Since beam attenuation is due almost exclusively to absorption of radiation by hydrocarbons, a quantitative measure of their concentration is available.
