Accelerating the Global Arrays ComEx Runtime using Multiple Progress Ranks

Partitioned Global Address Space (PGAS) models are part of system software that are being designed to support communication runtime for exascale applications. Suitability of using MPI as a scalable PGAS communication subsystem has been shown as a viable option due to its standardization and higher performance. We used MPI two-sided semantics with a combination of automatic and user defined splitting of MPI communicators to achieve asynchronous progress. Our implementation can make use of multiple asynchronous progress ranks (PR) per node that can be mapped to the computing architecture of a node in a distributed cluster. We are able to show significant speed up of over 2.0X and scaling of communication bound computational chemistry application over 1024 nodes of state- of-the-art HPC clusters. Our results show that while running a communication bound application workload on a certain number of cluster nodes, a use of optimum number of ranks dedicated for communication may be used to achieve asynchronous communication progress and obtain highest performance.

Advanced Mixed-Mode Pixel Array Detector for X-rays Above 20 keV (Final Report)

The objective of the work reported upon was to perform research and development and test advanced prototype imaging x-ray detectors needed to meet pressing scientific research needs at U.S. x-ray synchrotron user facilities. The high x-ray brightness of the Nation’s x-ray synchrotron sources in the DOE National Laboratories holds promise to advance science and technology in a broad range of fundamental and applied disciplines, including physics, chemistry, biomedical areas and engineering. At present, progress in many areas is being limited not by the x-ray source but by the lack of imaging x-ray detectors capable of meeting experimental needs. Specifically, there is pressing need for imaging detectors with high dynamic range, low noise, high frame rates and the ability to capture x-ray images with x-rays of energy > 20 keV. This Final Technical Report summarizes progress made at Cornell University on novel integrating x-ray detectors that address these characteristics.

Comparison and Analysis of Instruments Measuring Plane-of-Array Irradiance for One-Axis Tracking Systems: Preprint

A variety of sensors are studied on a one-axis tracking surface and a horizontal surface in Golden, Colorado, and Eugene, Oregon. This is the first year of a long-term study that will look at not only a comparison between the instruments but also the longer-term degradation in calibration and/or performance. Initially, results from each location will be analyzed, and then results will be compared and contrasted between the two locations. A quick comparison at Eugene indicates that reference solar cells seem to compare better against a secondary standard pyranometer on a one-axis tracker than photodiode-based pyranometers. More study is needed to characterize and confirm this finding.
