Quantum cascade laser with bound-to-quasi-continuum optical transitions at a temperature of up to 371 K

Based on a matched Ga{sub 0.47}In{sub 0.53}As/Al{sub 0.48}In{sub 0.52}As heteropair, we have developed a quantum cascade laser emitting at a wavelength of 7.4 μm. The chosen heterostructure with a relatively large number of quantum wells and barriers represents two mini-bands separated by a mini-gap with a localised doublet level near the upper mini-band, which provides a wide emission band (∼100 cm{sup −1}). In a pulse regime, the maximal laser operation temperature is 371 K. Such a high temperature is explained by two factors: a large energy of the transfer from the doublet to the upper mini-band and a large volt defect. The characteristic temperatures T{sub 0} are found, which are equal to 170 K for low (less than 300 K) temperatures and 270 K for the range of 300 − 370 K. In addition, optical cavity losses are determined to be 2.5 and 7.7 cm{sup −1} at temperatures of 80 and 254 K, respectively. The pulse power is 0.3 W at 80 K and 0.05 W at 293 K. Detection of the clock transition in thulium atoms by using repump laser radiation

A population transfer from the upper level of the clock transition in thulium atoms to the ground level is demonstrated by using radiation with a wavelength of 402 nm. The method for detecting the clock transition excitation that is not affected by technical fluctuations of the number of atoms in an optical lattice is investigated. The hyperfine splitting of the |4f{sup 12}({sup 3}F{sub 2})5d{sub 5/2} 6s{sup 2}; J = 7/2〉 level in the thulium atom is measured to be 1480(9) MHz. The suggested method for population transfer can be applied to both the hyperfine components of the clock transition intended for compensating Zeeman effect in a thulium optical clock. (paper)

Scheme for stabilising the phase and arrival time of ultrashort laser pulses in a coherent beam combining fibre system

An algorithm has been demonstrated for simultaneously measuring the phase and arrival time of optical pulses relative to pulses in a reference channel using one detector array. Based on this algorithm, a simple optoelectronic pulse phase and arrival time stabilisation scheme has been designed for operation in a coherent beam combining fibre system for ultrashort pulses (including chirped ones). We have studied the performance of the stabilisation scheme. In particular, we have reached a phase measurement rate of 25 000 cps, demonstrated an ∼ 2 kHz limiting phase stabilisation frequency in a feedback loop, and obtained an arrival time measurement accuracy of ∼ 5 % of the transform-limited pulse duration at a measurement rate of 5 cps. In experiments concerned with coherent beam combining for two channels of a pulsed fibre system at a wavelength of 1030 nm, we have demonstrated phase stabilisation with an accuracy better than λ/100 and delay setting accuracy of 10 fs at a transform-limited pulse duration of ∼ 200 fs and obtained 94 % beam combining efficiency. Compact ultrastable laser system for spectroscopy of {sup 2}S{sub 1/2} → {sup 2}D{sub 3/2} quadrupole transition in {sup 171}Yb{sup +} ion

We report the results of studying a compact laser system designed for manipulating a quantum state of the optical qubit based on the {sup 2}S{sub 1/2} → {sup 2}D{sub 3/2} quadrupole transition in the {sup 171}Yb{sup +} ion at a wavelength of 435.5 nm. An emission power of the laser system reaches 500 μW at λ = 435.5 nm and the relative frequency instability of at most 3 × 10{sup −15} is achieved at averaging intervals from 0.5 to 50 s with a subtracted linear frequency drift. The compactness of the developed system makes it possible to employ it in transportable systems including optical clocks. (laser spectroscopy)

Acousto-optic modulators of high-power laser radiation on the basis of KGW and KYW crystals

Different modifications of acousto-optic modulators (AOMs) based on KG(WO{sub 4}){sub 2} (KGW) and KY(WO{sub 4}){sub 2} (KYW) crystals, designed for Q switching of high-power pulsed lasers, is developed and investigated. It is shown that AOMs based on these crystals are universal, can be combined with different lasers in the wavelength range of 1 – 3 μm, and have a high radiation resistance in the absence of antireflection coatings and light input at Brewster’s angle. The operation efficiency of KGW-based AOMs is experimentally demonstrated. Solid-state lasers based on Cr : Er : YSGG (λ = 2.78 μm), Cr : Yb : Ho : YSGG (λ = 2.87 μm), Cr : Tm : Ho : YSGG (λ = 2.09 μm), and Nd : YAG (λ = 1.064 μm) crystals with active acousto-optic Q switching, operating in the repetitively pulsed regime with a high beam quality and without surface destruction, are investigated. Lasing pulses (30 – 60)-ns long with energy up to 32 mJ at a repetition rate from 1 to 1000 Hz are obtained. (paper)

Acousto-optic modulators for fibre-optic lines

The specific features of efficient matching of acousto-optic devices with single-mode fibres for the cases of isotropic and anisotropic diffraction are considered. The acousto-optic interaction geometry, optimal for modulating an arbitrarily polarised light beam with a possibility of tuning its frequency shift in the range up to ∼10 MHz, is chosen. Acousto-optic modulators/frequency shifters based on paratellurite (TeO{sub 2}), pigtailed with polarisation-maintaining and non-polarisation-maintaining fibres, have been developed for wavelengths of 1064 and 1550 nm, and their main technical parameters are investigated. Efficient lasing in mixtures of helium and fluorine in diffuse discharges formed by runaway electrons

The parameters of stimulated lasing in diffuse discharges formed in mixtures of helium and fluorine in a strongly inhomogeneous electric field are investigated. Lasing is obtained in the visible and VUV spectral regions on the transitions of fluorine atoms and molecules. It is shown that lasing in He – F{sub 2} mixtures at a wavelength of 157 nm continues for several half-periods of the discharge current. Due to the homogeneity of the diffuse discharge, the maximum lasing efficiency of the F{sub 2} laser is 0.15 %, which corresponds to the efficiency of this type of lasers pumped by pre-ionised transverse volume discharges. Nanosecond semiconductor disk laser emitting at 496.5 nm

An optically pumped semiconductor disk laser based on a heterostructure containing ten CdS/ZnSe coupled quantum wells with type-II band offsets is studied. The structure was grown by metalorganic vapour phase epitaxy (MOVPE) on a GaAs substrate. The peak power of the semiconductor disk laser achieved at room temperature under longitudinal pumping by a repetitively pulsed N{sub 2} laser was 0.75 W at a wavelength of 496.5 nm, a pulse duration of 3 ns, and a pulse repetition rate of 100 Hz. The slope efficiency of the disk laser was 2.7 %. The total divergence angle at a cavity length of 1.1 mm varied from 5 mrad near the lasing threshold to 15 mrad at the maximum pump power. (lasers)

Lidar-based remote infrared gas sensor for monitoring anthropogenic pollution: a proof of concept

We propose using wavelength-modulation laser absorption spectroscopy in combination with quadrature detection of scattered light for remote industrial pollution monitoring in the atmosphere with a compact lidar-based gas sensor, which can be mounted on board an unmanned aerial vehicle. The instrument can be used for detecting leaks in product pipe lines; monitoring toxic gases near landfill sites, waste incineration plants, and other hazardous man-made facilities; analysing the gas atmosphere in industrial buildings and structures; and monitoring engineering processes at a sensitivity level of tens of ppm m in gas concentration measurements at characteristic distances of tens of metres. Production of two-colour radiation with polarisations of components rotating in opposite directions

A method is proposed for the production of two-colour radiation with monochromatic components, the polarisation vectors of which rotate in opposite directions, and the rotation speed is controlled by the sound frequency. The method is based on acousto-optic (AO) interaction upon double passage of two-colour radiation through an AO cell made of a gyrotropic crystal; the method efficiency is demonstrated by the example of radiation from an Ar laser generating at wavelengths of 0.488 and 0.514 μm and an AO cell made of TeO{sub 2}, operating at a sound frequency of 60 MHz. AlGaInAs/InP semiconductor lasers with an ultra-narrow waveguide and an increased electron barrier

Semiconductor lasers based on AlGaInAs/InP heterostructures with an ultra-narrow waveguide and an increased electron barrier layer are developed. It is shown that the use of this waveguide in conjunction with profiled doping ensures a balance between internal optical losses and heat resistance. Additional use of strained wide-bandgap layers as blocking barriers limiting electron leakage from the active region makes it possible to increase the output power at the same pump current. The developed lasers with a stripe contact 100 μm wide demonstrate at room temperature an output optical power of 4.0 – 4.4 W (pump current 14 A) in a continuous-wave regime and 15 – 17 W (100 A) in a pulsed regime (100 ns, 1 kHz) at wavelengths of 1450 – 1500 nm. Seven-core fibre Raman laser with intercore coupling

This paper reports results of a study aimed at producing a Raman fibre laser based on a multicore fibre with high-reflectivity fibre Bragg gratings inscribed in its peripheral cores using femtosecond laser pulses. We present spectral and power characteristics of a Raman laser whose output power at a wavelength of 1090 nm is 2.5 W. The laser emission linewidth has been shown to decrease as a result of the reduction in nonlinear effects owing to the larger effective mode area in the multicore fibre in comparison with a standard single-mode fibre Raman laser. Structural insights into plasmalemma vesicle-associated protein (PLVAP): Implications for vascular endothelial diaphragms and fenestrae

In many organs, small openings across capillary endothelial cells (ECs) allow the diffusion of low–molecular weight compounds and small proteins between the blood and tissue spaces. These openings contain a diaphragm composed of radially arranged fibers, and current evidence suggests that a single-span type II transmembrane protein, plasmalemma vesicle-associated protein-1 (PLVAP), constitutes these fibers. Here, we present the three-dimensional crystal structure of an 89-amino acid segment of the PLVAP extracellular domain (ECD) and show that it adopts a parallel dimeric alpha-helical coiled-coil configuration with five interchain disulfide bonds. The structure was solved using single-wavelength anomalous diffraction from sulfur-containing residues (sulfur SAD) to generate phase information. Biochemical and circular dichroism (CD) experiments show that a second PLVAP ECD segment also has a parallel dimeric alpha-helical configuration—presumably a coiled coil—held together with interchain disulfide bonds. Overall, ~2/3 of the ~390 amino acids within the PLVAP ECD adopt a helical configuration, as determined by CD. We also determined the sequence and epitope of MECA-32, an anti-PLVAP antibody. Taken together, these data lend strong support to the model of capillary diaphragms formulated by Tse and Stan in which approximately ten PLVAP dimers are arranged within each 60- to 80-nm-diameter opening like the spokes of a bicycle wheel. Passage of molecules through the wedge-shaped pores is presumably determined both by the length of PLVAP—i.e., the long dimension of the pore—and by the chemical properties of amino acid side chains and N-linked glycans on the solvent-accessible faces of PLVAP.

POWTEX visits POWGEN

The high-intensity time-of-flight (TOF) neutron diffractometer POWTEX for powder and texture analysis is currently being built prior to operation in the eastern guide hall of the research reactor FRM II at Garching close to Munich, Germany. Because of the world-wide 3 He crisis in 2009, the authors promptly initiated the development of 3 He-free detector alternatives that are tailor-made for the requirements of large-area diffractometers. Herein is reported the 2017 enterprise to operate one mounting unit of the final POWTEX detector on the neutron powder diffractometer POWGEN at the Spallation Neutron Source located at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, USA. As a result, presented here are the first angular- and wavelength-dependent data from the POWTEX detector, unfortunately damaged by a 50 g shock but still operating, as well as the efforts made both to characterize the transport damage and to successfully recalibrate the voxel positions in order to yield nonetheless reliable measurements. Also described is the current data reduction process using the PowderReduceP2D algorithm implemented in Mantid [Arnold et al. (2014). Nucl. Instrum. Methods Phys. Res. A , 764 , 156–166]. The final part of the data treatment chain, namely a novel multi-dimensional refinement using a modified version of the GSAS-II software suite [Toby & Von Dreele (2013). J. Appl. Cryst. 46 , 544–549], is compared with a standard data treatment of the same event data conventionally reduced as TOF diffraction patterns and refined with the unmodified version of GSAS-II . This involves both determining the instrumental resolution parameters using POWGEN's powdered diamond standard sample and the refinement of a friendly-user sample, BaZn(NCN) 2 . Although each structural parameter on its own looks similar upon comparing the conventional (1D) and multi-dimensional (2D) treatments, also in terms of precision, a closer view shows small but possibly significant differences. For example, the somewhat suspicious proximity of the a and b lattice parameters of BaZn(NCN) 2 crystallizing in Pbca as resulting from the 1D refinement (0.008 Å) is five times less pronounced in the 2D refinement (0.038 Å). Similar features are found when comparing bond lengths and bond angles, e.g. the two N—C—N units are less differently bent in the 1D results (173 and 175°) than in the 2D results (167 and 173°). The results are of importance not only for POWTEX but also for other neutron TOF diffractometers with large-area detectors, like POWGEN at the SNS or the future DREAM beamline at the European Spallation Source.

Light Scattering by a Periodically Corrugated Boundary of a Hyperbolic Medium

The scattering features of radiation incident on a periodically modulated boundary of a hyperbolic medium (HM) are studied numerically. An optimal (in a certain class of functions)—sawtooth—profile shape is found that provides minimum reflection in a wide range of wavelengths. It is shown that, for a certain orientation of the optical axes of the HM, “hot points” appear on the sawtooth boundary, that are responsible for the subwavelength field localization. A generalization is implemented of the numerical method based on the Green’s second identity for the field calculation.

Luminescence Properties of FZ Silicon Irradiated with Swift Heavy Ions

The optical properties of float-zone (FZ) silicon irradiated with swift heavy ions (SHI) are studied. In the low-temperature photoluminescence spectra, a broad peak in the range 1.3–1.5 μm is evident along with the well-known X, W, W', R, and C lines. In this case, it is found that, as the irradiation dose is increased in the range 3 × 10{sup 11}–10{sup 13} cm{sup –2}, the photoluminescence peak falls and narrows and, at the same time, its maximum shifts to longer wavelengths.

High-Voltage AlInGaN LED Chips

A high-voltage light-emitting diode (LED) flip chip based on an AlInGaN heterostructure is developed and fabricated. The LED flip chip consists of 16 elements connected in series, each of which is a convential LED. The chip with a total area of 1.25 × 1.25 mm is intended for a working current of 20 mA and a forward voltage of 48 V. To improve the current-distribution uniformity over the active region of the chip elements and to minimize the losses of the element area occupied by the n-type contact, the n-type contact pads in them are arranged inside the p-type contact region due to the two-level metallization layout with an intermediate insulating layer of dielectric. The arrangement topology of the contact pads is developed using numerical simulation. An increase in the quantum efficiency of the chip is provided by the application of combinations of metals with a high reflectance at the LED emission wavelength, which are used when fabricating n- and p-type contacts as well as current-carrying strips.

Formation of ncl-Si in the Amorphous Matrix a-SiO{sub x}:H Located near the Anode and on the Cathode, Using a Time-Modulated DC Plasma with the (SiH{sub 4}–Ar–O{sub 2}) Gas Phase (C{sub O{sub 2}} = 21.5 mol %)

The formation of ncl-Si in the amorphous matrix a-SiO{sub x}:H using a time-modulated DC plasma at an elevated oxygen content of C{sub O{sub 2}} = 21.5 mol % in a gas mixture of (SiH{sub 4}–Ar–O{sub 2}) is investigated. Plasma modulation implies the repeated (n = 180) switching on (for t{sub on} = 5, 10, 15 s) and switching off (for t{sub off} = 5, 10, 15 s) of the magnet coil of the DC magnetron. The effect of self-induction is used to enhance the processes of SiH{sub 4} dissociation, the formation of Si nanoparticles, and the ionization of oxygen and ncl-Si flows towards the electrodes. The samples are located both on an electrically isolated substrate holder near the anode and on the cathode (beyond its erosion zone). These experiments show that the shape of the dependences of the photoluminescence intensity I{sub PL}{sup ncl−Si} on the wavelength Λ are identical for all pairs of samples on the anode and cathode. When the t{sub on} value is small (t{sub on} = 5 s), the difference in the sample location only slightly affects the infrared (IR) spectra. At longer times t{sub on} (≥10 s) and a short time t{sub off} (5 s), the amorphous matrix located on the cathode is enriched with oxygen (as compared with that near the anode). The optimal plasma-modulation parameters are found to be t{sub off}/t{sub on} = 5, 10, 15/10 and t{sub off}/t{sub on} = 5, 10/15; under these conditions, the amorphous matrix has a “perfect structure” and is transparent to radiation, and the I{sub PL}{sup ncl−Si} value is the largest in the range λ ≈ 0.75–0.9 μm.
