The Role of the Manufacturer in Air Transportation Planning

The role of the aircraft manufacturer in the airline industry is considered. The process is illustrated by using a fictitious airline as an example--that is, a case study approach with Mid-Coast Airways serving as the example. Both in slide form and with supporting papers, a brief history of the airline, a description of its route structure and a forecast based on econometric analysis are presented. Once the forecast rationale is explained, information outlines the requirements for additional aircraft and the application of new aircraft across the system using alternative fleet plan options. The fleet plan is translated into financial summaries which indicate the relative merit of alternative aircraft types or operating plans.

Status of STOL ride quality and control

A STOL ride-control development program has been initiated with the objective of generating ride-control technology through development and evaluation of an active control system specifically designed to provide ride smoothing on a STOL vehicle. Although much can be learned through analysis, there are deficiencies in technology for translating analysis results into operating hardware. The general approach being followed is to select an existing STOL vehicle for trial and then carry out a study to establish feasibility of a control system or systems to smooth the ride and generate system trade-off data.

Theoretical study of lift generated vortex sheets designed to avoid roll up

The random motions of the vortex elements behind a wing that sheds a disturbed, translating array of vortices are analyzed. The analysis indicates that the wake would diffuse and decay rapidly when viscosity is present and would produce small rolling moments on encountering aircraft. It was found that comparable results could also be achieved with an array consisting of vortices that are equal in magnitude but which alternate in sign. This observation indicates that random motion can probably be achieved with a variety of stepped loadings.

Estimation in satellite control.

The use of estimators or observers is discussed as applied to satellite attitude control and the control of drag-free satellites. The practical problems of implementation are discussed, and the relative advantages of full and reduced state estimators are compared, particularly in terms of their effectiveness and bandwidth as filters. Three applications are used to illustrate the principles. They are: (1) a reaction wheel control system, (2) a spinning attitude control system, and (3) a drag-free satellite translational control system. Fixed estimator gains are shown to be adequate for these (and many other) applications. Our experience in the hardware realization of estimators has led to categorize the error sources in terms of those that improve with increased estimator gains and those that get worse with increased estimator gains.

Durability tests of a five-centimeter diameter ion thruster system.

A modified Hughes SIT-5 system is being tested for durability at the Lewis Research Center. As of Oct. 1, 1972, the thruster subsystem has logged over 8000 hours of operation. The initial 2023 hours were run with a translating screen thrust vector grid. The thruster is currently operating with an electrostatic type vector grid. Profiles and maps taken at widely separated intervals show that performance and operating characteristics have remained essentially constant. Overall efficiency is about 32 per cent and power to thrust ratio is 170 watts per millipound at a specific impulse of 2500 seconds. Telescopic examination of the vector grid shows some sputtering erosion due to charge exchange and direct impingement ions. An independent test of the propellant storage and cathode-isolator-vaporizer subsystem has demonstrated good reliability under simulated thruster operating conditions.

Detailed gravimetric geoid for the United States.

A detailed gravimetric geoid was computed for the United States using a combination of satellite-derived spherical harmonic coefficients and 1 by 1 deg mean gravity values from surface gravimetry. Comparisons of this geoid with astrogeodetic geoid data indicate that a precision of plus or minus 2 meters has been obtained. Translations only were used to convert the NAD astrogeodetic geoid heights to geocentric astrogeodetic heights. On the basis of the agreement between the geocentric astrogeodetic geoid heights and the gravimetric geoid heights, no evidence is found for rotation in the North American datum. The value of the zero-order undulation can vary by 10 to 20 meters, depending on which investigator's station positions are used to establish it.

Energy distribution among reaction products. VII - H + F2.

The 'arrested relaxation' variant of the IR chemiluminescence technique is used in a study of the distribution of vibrational, rotational and translational energies between the products of the reaction by which H + F2 yields HF + F. Diagrams are plotted and numerical values are obtained for the energy distribution rate constants.

Digital image registration by correlation techniques.

This study considers the translation problem associated with digital image registration and develops a means for comparing commonly used correlation techniques. Using suitably defined constraints, an optimum and four suboptimum registration techniques are defined and evaluated. A computational comparison is made and Gaussian image statistics are used to compare the selected techniques in terms of radial position location error.

A cursory look at shuttle flight operations.

The purpose of the shuttle system is to permit us to do more useful and necessary things in space at minimum cost. The flight operation subsystem must be consistent with these goals. This review of the predicted payload and mission types reveals a ground facility functionally similar to the Skylab Control Center is needed to provide trajectory control and system management services for the spacecraft and payloads and to provide rapid, effective payload data acquisition and distribution to the user. An automated mission management system must be added to translate user requirements into specific missions, directives, schedules, and plans.

Criteria for selecting resin matrices for improved composite strength.

Criteria are presented which can be used a priori to select matrices to yield composites with improved unidirectional strength. The criteria evolved from an investigation including both theoretical and experimental efforts. Composite micromechanics were used in conjunction with suitable experiments and reference data to identify those matrix properties which influence composite strength properties. Composites of graphite fibers and low, intermediate and high-modulus resins were investigated. It was found that the area under the matrix stress/strain diagram limited to one percent strain is a good index for an a priori assessment of the matrix contribution to composite strength. The corresponding initial modulus is a useful parameter in translating matrix properties to composite properties.

Video-to-film color-image recorder.

A precision video-to-film recorder for use in image data processing systems, being developed for NASA, will convert three video input signals (red, blue, green) into a single full-color light beam for image recording on color film. Argon ion and krypton lasers are used to produce three spectral lines which are independently modulated by the appropriate video signals, combined into a single full-color light beam, and swept over the recording film in a raster format for image recording. A rotating multi-faceted spinner mounted on a translating carriage generates the raster, and an annotation head is used to record up to 512 alphanumeric characters in a designated area outside the image area.

Multiple absorption of laser photons by atoms.

Using a space translation operation, it is shown that the Schroedinger equation for an atom in an external electromagnetic field can be solved with sufficient accuracy to obtain the transition probabilities for multiphoton absorption from a monochromatic laser beam of arbitrary intensity or frequency. The specific applicability conditions of the method are discussed.

Automatic control of the Skylab Astronaut Maneuvering Research Vehicle.

The two automatic control modes of the Astronaut Maneuvering Research Vehicle (AMRV) are analyzed: the control moment gyro (CMG) and the rate gyro (RG). The AMRV is an autonomous maneuvering unit which translates and rotates the pilot by means of hand-controller input commands. The CMG normal operation, desaturation, and cage/lock dynamics are described in terms of a realistic AMRV mass property configuration. No propellant is used for normal operation in the CMG mode, and the maximum rotation rate is 5 deg/sec about each AMRV axis. The RG attitude maneuvering and limit cycle submode dynamic are described in terms of the same AMRV mass property configuration.

Coordinated adaptive washout for motion simulators.

This paper introduces a new method of providing motion cues to a moving base six-degree-of-freedom flight simulator utilizing nonlinear filters. Coordinated adaptive filters, used to coordinate translational and rotational motion, are derived based on the method of continuous steepest descent, and the basic concept of the digital controllers used for the uncoordinated heave and yaw cues is also presented. The coordinated adaptive washout method is illustrated by an application in a six-degree-of-freedom fixed-base environment.

Signal conditioning electronics for a laser vector velocimeter.

A type of laser velocimeter termed a laser vector velocimeter (LVV) resolves the 180 deg directional ambiguity problem of the conventional laser velocimeter by exploiting optical frequency translation techniques and frequency division demultiplexing techniques. This paper defines some fundamental LVV system signal characteristics and signal conditioning and data acquisition problems. The signal conditioning electronics for a three velocity component LVV system are described. Data obtained from atmospheric wind velocity measurements using a two velocity component LVV system are presented to illustrate the vector velocity measurement capabilities of the system. The operational status LVV systems presently in use are two orthogonal velocity component units. However, a laboratory status LVV system has been used to make three-dimensional vector velocity measurements.

Digital flight control software design requirements

The objective of the integrated digital flight control system is to provide rotational and translational control of the space shuttle orbiter in all phases of flight: from launch ascent through orbit to entry and touchdown, and during powered horizontal flights. The program provides a versatile control system structure while maintaining uniform communications with other programs, sensors, and control effects by using an executive routine/function subroutine format. The program reads all external variables at a single point, copies them into its dedicated storage, and then calls the required subroutines in the proper sequence. As a result, the flight control program is largely independent of other programs in the GN and C computer complex and is equally insensitive to the characteristics of the processor configuration. The integrated structure of the control system and the DFCS executive routine which embodies that structure are described. The specific estimation and control algorithms used in the various mission phases are shown. Attitude maneuver routines that interface with the DFCS are also described.

Motion software for a synergistic six-degree-of-freedom motion base

Computer software for the conversion of fixed-base simulations into moving-base simulations utilizing a synergistic six-degree-of-freedom motion simulator has been developed. This software includes an actuator extension transformation, inverse actuator extension transformation, a centroid transformation, and a washout circuit. Particular emphasis is placed upon the washout circuitry as adapted to fit the synergistic motion simulator. The description of the washout circuitry and illustration by means of a sample flight emphasize that translational cue representation may be of good fidelity, but care in the selection of parameters is very necessary, particularly in regard to anomalous rotational cues.
