Building Stock Segmentation Cluster Development: Technical Reference Document

The building stock in the United States (U.S.) varies significantly as a function of several macro variables such as: climate, building type, vintage, and density. These variables change across the U.S. and can also significantly impact energy usage of the individual buildings and overall stock. For example, the square foot density and building type varies by several orders of magnitude from Manhattan to the eastern plains of Colorado. The diversity in energy use of the building stock of different areas of the U.S. is significant, and as a result, analyses that require localized results need to consider the relevant geography and the current makeup of the building stock. This document discusses the development and implementation of a stock clustering algorithm that produces a technically rigorous, consistent, and repeatable collection of geographies which are used as the basis for localized analysis. This framework considers the impact of built environment density, diversity, and climate in creating groupings of counties that create a far more nuanced analysis framework than national averages. Clustering of counties together represents a similarity of building characteristics and climate zone.

Reconstruction of 3D Concrete Microstructures Combining High-Resolution Characterization and Convolutional Neural Network for Image Segmentation

After water, concrete is the second most used material in the world. Concrete’s forming adaptability and low-cost constituents make it a predominant material used in the construction of civil infrastructures in nuclear power plants such as concrete biological shields, containment buildings, turbine buildings, fuel handling and storage buildings, underground piping for cooling, cooling towers, and so on. Depending on environmental and operating conditions, these passive structures are subject to time-dependent phenomena that can either enhance (e.g., continued hydration) or degrade concrete’s structural performance. Unlike components such as the reactor pressure vessel and the primary circuit, concrete composition varies regionally because it is manufactured using local aggregates and cement. Hence, concrete performance metrics over time cannot be derived confidently using empirical relations. Alternatively, the specific characteristics of the local concrete constituents and their assemblage in concrete must be considered.

Behavioral Segmentation and Clustering of Geospatial Trajectories

The rapid growth of global positioning system (GPS) devices has led to a corresponding increase in the size of GPS datasets. While these large GPS datasets contain a wealth of information about the behaviors of the moving objects in them, manual classification and anomaly detection are prohibitively time consuming. We utilize unsupervised machine learning techniques to first identify the behaviors for individual moving objects and then cluster those objects by their behavioral sequences. In this way, trajectories behaving unusually as well as common patterns of behavior are both detectable in large datasets without requiring an a priori definition of "unusual" or "common."

Understanding Multifamily Energy Use in the Colorado Mountains: Building Stock Segmentation for Retrofit Planning

This report is an addendum to a publication series that focuses on approximately 100 different local geographies, or "clusters". This addendum expands the report series to include large multifamily building characteristics as well as energy and emission data for each local geography. The intention of this addendum is to help policymakers at the city, county, and state levels better understand building energy use and emissions in large multifamily buildings.
