Thermophysical properties of parahydrogen from the freezing liquid line to 5000 R for pressures to 10000 psia

The tables include entropy, enthalpy, internal energy, density, volume, speed of sound, specific heat, thermal conductivity, viscosity, thermal diffusivity, Prandtl number, and the dielectric constant for 65 isobars. Quantities of special utility in heat transfer and thermodynamic calculations are also included in the isobaric tables. In addition to the isobaric tables, tables for the saturated vapor and liquid are given, which include all of the above properties, plus the surface tension. Tables for the P-T of the freezing liquid, index of refraction, and the derived Joule-Thomson inversion curve are also presented.

Thermophysical properties of helium-4 from 4 to 3000 R with pressures to 15000 psia

Data on many of the properties of helium commonly used in engineering calculations are compiled over as wide a temperature and pressure range as is practical. These properties are presented in a form which is convenient to the engineer. All of these properties have been critically evaluated and represent the best values for that property at this time.

Degenerate R-S perturbation theory

A concise, systematic procedure is given for determining the Rayleigh-Schrodinger energies and wave functions of degenerate states to arbitrarily high orders even when the degeneracies of the various states are resolved in arbitrary orders. The procedure is expressed in terms of an iterative cycle in which the energy through the (2n+1)st order is expressed in terms of the partially determined wave function through the n-th order. Both a direct and an operator derivation are given. The two approaches are equivalent and can be transcribed into each other. The direct approach deals with the wave functions (without the use of formal operators) and has the advantage that it resembles the usual treatment of nondegenerate perturbations and maintains close contact with the basic physics. In the operator approach, the wave functions are expressed in terms of infinite order operators which are determined by the successive resolution of the space of the zeroth order functions.

On the dynamical realization of /M, R/-systems

A new manner of representing a class of abstract cell models previously developed by the author is presented. Some of the properties of this dynamical representation are explored, and their consequences discussed.

On the distortion of the Jovian magnetic field R greater than about 40 Jovian radii as deduced from charged particle studies

The relationship between the rotation of Jupiter's magnetic field and time variations in the intensity of nearly 6 to 30 MeV electrons observed by Pioneer 10 in the outer regions of Jupiter's magnetosphere is considered. The 6-30 MeV electron flux showed regular intensity variations with a period of approximately 10 hours. The behavior of this energetic electron flux is found to be most consistent with confinement of particles to a magnetic equatorial plane which is considerably distorted from the shape expected for rigid corotation of the magnetic field with Jupiter. The distortion is likely to arise from stresses resulting from interaction of the magnetosphere with the solar wind and from inertial effects of the magnetospheric plasma.

Evidence for earth magnetospheric tail associated phenomena at 3100 R sub E

Examination of Pioneer 7 NASA Ames Research Center plasma analyzer data obtained in February 1977 at about 3100 earth radii, downstream from earth in the vicinity of the expected extended geomagnetic tail indicate that tail-related phenomena may have been observed. These observations are characterized by intermittent intervals of extremely low levels of plasma ion flux. Corresponding Prognoz 5 Space Research Institute plasma ion data obtained in the vicinity of earth indicate typical solar-wind flux levels and a relatively steady character of the solar wind during this time. These recent Pioneer 7 observations in the vicinity of the expected geomagnetic tail at about 3100 earth radii are consistent with earlier Pioneer 7 observations in September 1966 at about 1000 earth radii and Pioneer 8 observations in January 1968 at about 500 earth radii and represent the most extended positive observational information of the extended nature of the geomagnetic tail. These measurements suggest that at times Jupiter's magnetosphere may have tail-associated phenomena extending to distances of about 10 AU downstream from the planet. These measurements also raise the possibility that at times comets may have tail-associated phenomena extending downstream from the visible tail.

The Nimbus satellite system: Remote sensing R&D platform of the 70's

Originally conceived to be the future operational weather satellite, the Nimbus series of seven satellites became the work horse and experimental backbone of the NASA/NOAA space research program. Early problems in developing the attitude control system and proving its operational characteristics in the simulated space environment are discussed. The program proved itself many times over; contributing substantially to the scientific knowledge of atmospherics and weather. As application/research vehicles, the seven Nimbus spacecraft were used for the development, test and application of a variety of new and advanced meteorological and geophysical remote sensing instruments and associated data transmission and processing techniques.

The ultraviolet spectra of R and N type stars

Low dispersion long wave radiation spectra of three early N-type carbon stars (BL Orionis, TX Piscium and T Indi) obtained with the IUE are discussed. N-star spectra were compared with IUE observations of late M-type stars and several differences were noted. The Mg II and C II chromospheric emission lines reported are the first convincing detection of a 10,000-20,000 K chromosphere in the N stars.

Solar wind motion within 30 R solar masses - Spacecraft radio scintillation observations

New remote-sensing observations are reported of the solar wind motion within about 30 earth radii. Use is made of the interplanetary scintillation (IPS) spaced receiver technique with the radio source being a spacecraft signal (rather than a natural radio source as in previous spaced receiver studies). The spacecraft used are Helios A and B and the Viking orbiters. The purposes of the study are (1) to augment the scarce estimates of solar wind bulk flow speed near the sun and in the ecliptic with measurements made using spacecraft signals, and (2) to estimate random velocity components and identify the region where the random velocity is a significant fraction of the mean velocity. In addition, the radial evolution of speed and random velocity is compared with that of the plasma density fluctuation spectrum. Also reported are the first accurately normalized IPS scintillation index measurements using a monochromatic point source.
