Practical Approaches to Embed Energy and Environmental Justice into DOE Technology Portfolios (August 2021–August 2024)

This document serves as a resource to science and technology offices within DOE seeking to incorporate energy and environmental justice (EEJ) into their programs and portfolios. It provides background information on EEJ principles, how those principles apply from early-stage technology development through deployment and commercialization. Through providing foundational information about justice and equity, and how they apply to technology development and program facilitation, this document provides information to take tangible and interim steps towards these goals.

Developing A New NG Super-Absorbent Polymer (NG-SAP) for a Practical NG Storage System with Low Pressure, Ambient Temperature, and High Energy Density

This R&D project proposed a systematical study to develop a new class of NG super-absorbent polymer (NG-SAP) with the objective to achieve similar CNG volumetric storage level ~250 cm 3 -STP/cm 3 and fast sorption-desorption kinetics at ambient temperature but lower operational pressure (<100 bar). We suggested two consecutive research phases, including (i) a systematical investigation of various polymer systems to identify the suitable classes that can exhibit methane (C1) binding energy in the range of 20-25 kJ/mol and then (ii) focusing on the potential class polymers to identify the specific structure and morphology that can achieve the project objective. In first research phase (1st year), the major tasks included design and synthesis of several representative polymers with various structure attributes, examining their molecular structures, pore morphology, and BET surface area as the prepared samples, and then studying their C1 binding energy and sorption capacity.

Small Hydropower Interconnection Best Practices Guidelines and Templates

The process for development of a hydropower project can be a convoluted and lengthy process involving numerous federal, state, and local agencies and encompass a plethora of stakeholders that other renewable project development processes may not have to consider. Additionally, the process may vary depending on who the owner/operator is, such as private, nonutility companies; private utility companies; municipalities; electric cooperatives; private citizens; and state and federal government agencies.

Industrial Ergonomics And Safe Lifting Practices: Food Depot [Slides]

Injuries happen when we go beyond what tissues can handle. It's repeated loading and subsequent failure of soft tissue that seem to account for most low back pain. This presentation discusses some common causes of workplace injuries and ways to reduce the likelihood of them happening.

Nuclear Data: From Measurement, Evaluation, Processing to Practical Applications [Slides]

Any analysis, design of a nuclear system will be as good as the knowledge of the nuclear data used whether differential and integral. ORNL is engaged in generating high level nuclear data for reactor, shielding, and safety applications. Nuclear data remains a major source of data uncertainties. Uncertainties on nuclear data rely upon measurements and evaluations. Tight connections with experimental facilities around the world have helped ORNL to address issues on ND and uncertainty. It is extremely important for ORNL to retain expertise on nuclear data in support of the research and expertise activities.

Grid Resilience Plans: State Requirements, Utility Practices, and Utility Plan Template

As of June 2024, 14 states and one city require jurisdictional electric utilities to file resilience plans. Drawing on these requirements and filed plans, this report offers a standard template that states and utilities can consider to improve utility filings for grid resilience plans, either as part of a distribution system plan or as a separate filing. Key elements include a vulnerability assessment, description of proposed resilience programs, and projected costs and rate impacts. While many of these requirements and plans focus on extreme weather hazards, the template also can be used to address additional threats, including cyber and physical attacks and seismic events.

Seminar 44, Innovative and New Ideas: BAS Best Practices for O&M Success Coaching Operators for Effective Use of Data

Regardless of a building’s inherent energy efficiency, changes in building operator behavior reduces building energy consumption by 14% on average. Giving operators readily available and easily digestible data regarding the performance of their HVAC systems increases the likelihood of energy saving actions. Many Building Automations Systems do not excel at creating user-friendly time series trend charts. This presentation presents examples of a solution to this issue developed under an award by the Department of Energy.

Best Practices for Renewable Energy Installations in the National Parks

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Federal Energy Management Program (FEMP) and National Park Service (NPS) have partnered to support the development and utilization of renewable energy technology at federal facilities and on federal lands. FEMP provides technical support to NPS on renewable energy projects to identify and generate significant cost savings and efficiency benefits, investigate opportunities to reduce carbon footprint and/or achieve carbon neutrality, and improve resilience to NPS-owned facilities and sites. The purpose of this report is to support NPS staff as they evaluate whether and how to use renewable energy technologies in park operations.

Transmission Operator Workflows for Real-Time Reliability Studies: A Review of Control Room Practices and Naturalistic Decision Making

This report provides an overview of real-time reliability study tools and their use by power system operators in the control room environment. After introducing some of the nuances of the control room environment and the differences in perspectives between power system engineers and operators, the roles and responsibilities of key entities involved in RTCA workflows are introduced. These are specifically the transmission system operator (TOP) and reliability coordinator (RC), which are required to run tools such as real-time contingency analysis (RTCA) as part of a real-time reliability assessment every 30 minutes, as dictated by a series of standards issued by the North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC). The process by which power systems operators operate the grid is discussed in terms of naturalistic decision making (NDM) and the recognition-primed decision-making (RPD) model. This cognitive model describe how experts working in high-risk, high-stress environments make safety-critical decisions under uncertainty and time pressure. For power system operators, the mental simulations involved in the traditional RPD model are supplemented by physics-based simulations using numerical tools, such as RTCA, to improve situational awareness and effectiveness of control actions. Next, a generic workflow is introduced to describe operator decision making for running RTCA tools and responding to system violations on a pre-contingent basis. The types of analysis performed and control actions chosen by power system operators are described in detail. The overall high-level workflow is then expanded in subsequent sections, with special attention given to high-voltage violations, low-voltage violations, and thermal overloads. Each type of violation is described in detail, with explanations of common causes, impacts on equipment and customers, and mitigation strategies. An additional workflow diagram is provided for each type of violation.
