Unlocking Electrostrain in Plastically Deformed Barium Titanate

Achieving substantial electrostrain alongside a large effective piezoelectric strain coefficient (d 33 *) in piezoelectric materials remains a formidable challenge for advanced actuator applications. Here, in this work, a straightforward approach to enhance these properties by strategically designing the domain structure and controlling the domain switching through the introduction of arrays of ordered {100}<100> dislocations is proposed. This dislocation engineering yields an intrinsic lock-in steady–state electrostrain of 0.69% at a low field of 10 kV cm -1 without external stress and an output strain energy density of 5.24 J cm -3 in single-crystal BaTiO 3 , outperforming the benchmark piezoceramics and relaxor ferroelectric single-crystals. Additionally, applying a compression stress of 6 MPa fully unlocks electrostrains exceeding 1%, yielding a remarkable d 33 * value over 10 000 pm V -1 and achieving a record-high strain energy density of 11.67 J cm -3 . Optical and transmission electron microscopy, paired with laboratory and synchrotron X-ray diffraction, is employed to rationalize the observed electrostrain. Phase-field simulations further elucidate the impact of charged dislocations on domain nucleation and domain switching. These findings present an effective and sustainable strategy for developing high-performance, lead-free piezoelectric materials without the need for additional chemical elements, offering immense potential for actuator technologies.

Direct Evidence of Graphene-Induced Molecular Reorientation in Polymer Films

For the first time, direct evidence of graphene-induced molecular reorientation in polymer films using polarization modulated infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy (PMIRRAS) are presented. By creating favorable electrostatic interactions, graphene-polymer interfaces can be controlled by varying polymer and solvent composition. After trans of unmodified graphene from copper onto a polymer substrate, polymer chain rearrangement relative to the orientation at the polymer-copper interface is observed using PM-IRRAS. Transfer success is characterized using both optical transmission measurements and Raman spectroscopy to quantify the transfer fidelity, i.e. graphene coverage fraction. Taken together, oxygencontaining poly(ethylene-co-vinyl acetate) shows more polymer chain rearrangement and better graphene coverage compared to oxygen-free polyethylene. Polymer composition seems to dominate graphene-polymer interactions while solvent choice has a smaller effect on transfer quality. These results are the first direct measurement of this effect and point towards the possibility of engineering graphene-polymer interactions for specific applications.

Large Non‐Resonant Infrared Optical Second Harmonic Generation in Bulk Crystals of Van der Waals Semiconductor, SnP 2 Se 6

2D van der Waals (vdW) materials have emerged as a highly promising candidates for nonlinear optical (NLO) applications. This study presents the synthesis, comprehensive linear optical, and optical second harmonic generation (SHG) characterization of a novel 2D vdW semiconductor SnP2Se6 in its bulk single crystal form. It exhibits an indirect bandgap of ≈1.47 eV and an exceptional non-resonant SHG coefficient of d 33 ∼ −222 ± 30 pm V −1 at a fundamental wavelength of 2 µm, which is ≈7 times larger than that of the commercial AgGaSe 2 with a comparable bandgap. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations of the linear and nonlinear optical properties exhibit reasonable agreement with the experimental measurements, revealing the chemical origin of the enhanced properties. Moreover, SnP 2 Se 6 can exhibit both type-I and type-II phase matching over a wide spectral range, fulfilling one of the key criteria for an ideal NLO crystal. These exceptional properties position SnP 2 Se 6 as a highly promising candidate for NLO applications.

Molecularly Imprinted Polymer Sensor Empowered by Bound States in the Continuum for Selective Trace-Detection of TGF-beta

The integration of advanced materials and photonic nanostructures can lead to enhanced biodetection capabilities, crucial in clinical scenarios and point-of-care diagnostics, where simplified strategies are essential. Herein, a molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) photonic nanostructure is demonstrated, which selectively binding to transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-β), in which the sensing transduction is enhanced by bound states in the continuum (BICs). The MIP operating as a synthetic antibody matrix and coupled with BIC resonance, enhances the optical response to TGF-β at imprinted sites, leading to an augmented detection capability, thoroughly evaluated through spectral shift and optical lever analogue readout. The validation underscores the MIP-BIC sensor capability to detect TGF-β in spiked saliva, achieving a limit of detection of 10 fM and a resolution of 0.5 pM at physiological concentrations, with a precision of two orders of magnitude above discrimination threshold in patients. The MIP tailored selectivity is highlighted by an imprinting factor of 52, showcasing the sensor resistance to interference from other analytes. The MIP-BIC sensor architecture streamlines the detection process eliminating the need for complex sandwich immunoassays and demonstrates the potential for high-precision quantification. This positions the system as a robust tool for biomarker detection, especially in real-world diagnostic scenarios.

Realization of Non‐Equilibrium Wurtzite Structure in Heterovalent Ternary MgSiN 2 Film Grown by Reactive Sputtering

The piezoelectric and ferroelectric applications of heterovalent ternary materials are not well explored. Epitaxial MgSiN 2 films are grown at 600 °C on (111)Pt//(001)Al 2 O 3 substrates by the reactive sputtering method using metallic Mg and Si under the N 2 atmosphere. Detailed X-ray diffraction measurements and transmission electron microscopy observations revealed that the epitaxially grown films on the substrates have a hexagonal wurtzite structure with c-axis out-of-plane orientation. The random occupation of this structure by Mg and Si differs from that of the previously reported structure in which these two cations periodically occupy the cationic sites. However, the lattice spacings closely approximate those that are previously reported, irrespective of the ordering, and they are almost comparable with those of (Al 0.8 Sc 0.2 )N. The wide bandgap of >5.0 eV in deposited MgSiN 2 is compatible with that of AlN and suggests durability against the application of strong external electric fields, possibly to induce polarization switching. In addition, MgSiN 2 is shown to have piezoelectric properties with an effective d 33 value of 2.3 pm V −1 for the first time. This work demonstrates the compositional expansion of hexagonal wurtzite to heterovalent ternary nitrides for novel piezoelectric materials, whose ferroelectricity is expected.

Processing and properties of hafnium-doped tin-modified lead zirconate titanate 95/5 ceramics

Niobium (Nb)-doped lead-tin-zirconate-titanate (PSZT) ceramics near the lead-zirconate-titanate 95/5 orthorhombic AFE-rhombohedral FE morphotropic phase boundary (PSZT 13.5/81/5.5 -1.6Nb) were prepared with up to 10 mol.% of hafnium (Hf) substituted for zirconium. The ceramics were prepared by a traditional solid-state synthesis route and sintered to near full density at 1150°C for 6 h in sealed alumina crucibles with self-same material as the lead vapor source. All compositions were ~98% dense with no detectable secondary phases by X-ray diffraction. The grain size was ~3 μm for all compositions, consisting of equiaxed grains with intergranular porosity. The compositions exhibited remnant polarization values of ~32 μC/cm 2 . Depolarization by the hydrostatic pressure-induced FE-AFE phase transition occurred at 310 MPa for all compositions, resulting in a total depolarization output of 32.4 μC/cm 2 for the PSZT ceramics. Evaluation of the R3c-R3m and R3m-Pm $\bar{3}$ m phase transition temperatures by impedance spectroscopy showed temperatures on heating ranging from 86 to 92°C and 186 to 182°C, respectively, for increasing nominal Hf content. Thermal hysteresis of the phase transitions was also observed in the ceramics, with the transition temperature on cooling being 1–4°C lower. The study demonstrated that the PSZT ceramics are relatively insensitive to variations in Hf content in the range of 0 to 10 mol.%.

Combining the Best of Two Chelating Titans: A Hydroxypyridinone-Decorated Macrocyclic Ligand for Efficient and Concomitant Complexation and Sensitized Luminescence of f-Elements

An ideal chelator for f-elements features rapid kinetics of complexation, high thermodynamic stability, and slow kinetics of dissociation. Here we present the facile synthesis of a macrocyclic ligand bearing four 1-hydroxy-2-pyridinone units linked to a cyclen scaffold that rapidly forms thermodynamically stable complexes with lanthanides (Sm 3+ , Eu 3+ , Tb 3+ , Dy 3+ ) and a representative late actinide (Cm 3+ ) in aqueous media and concurrently sensitizes them. Extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectroscopy revealed an increase in the Ln/An-O bond lengths following the trend Cm>Eu>Tb and EXAFS data were compatible with time-resolved luminescence studies, which indicated one to two water molecules in the inner metal coordination sphere of Eu(III) and two water molecules for the Cm(III) complex. Spectrofluorimetric ligand competition titrations against DTPA confirmed the high thermodynamic stability of DOTHOPO complexes, with pM values between 19.9(1) and 21.9(2).

Giant Dipole Moments: Remarkable Effects Mono‐, Di‐, and Tri‐ Hydrated 5,6‐Diaminobenzene‐1,2,3,4‐Tetracarbonnitrile

The molecule 5,6-diaminobenzene-1,2,3,4-tetracarbonnitrile (MOI) was first synthesized by Müllen and coworkers in 2016 and boasts an ultrastrong dipole moment of $14.1\pm 0.7$ Debye in THF. Gas phase DFT computations do not fully reflect this ultrastrong dipole moment, demonstrating the role of solvent in increasing this dipole moment. Here, we investigate the effect of solvent molecule position on the dipole moment of this species, computationally examining systems with giant dipole moments. These systems are optimized in the gas phase with the B3LYP functional, employing the aug-cc-pVTZ and def2-TZVP basis sets, as well as the B3LYP-D3BJ/aug-cc-pVTZ functional in Orca. Single point DLPNO-CCSD/aug-cc-pVDZ results were obtained from Orca and Psi4, as well as DLPNO-CCSD(T)/CBS information from Psi4. Additionally, these are compared to the dipole moments of di- and tri-hydrated systems, and the SMD models for THF and water at the B3LYP/aug-cc-pVTZ level of theory. The dissociation energies, HOMO-LUMO energy gaps, and dipole moments are presented. These metrics show the nh1nh1′ THF system boasts the largest dissociation energy and dipole moment of the singly solvated systems, due to its strong hydrogen bonding. The importance of solvent placement is highlighted and may guide the synthesis of macromolecules or organic frameworks incorporating the MOI or MOI-like subunits. Remarkably, a single solvent molecule provides a good model for the difference between the gas phase and solvated species. The predicted gas phase dipole moments computed with B3LYP/aug-cc-pVTZ for the MOI, its monohydrated complex, dihydrated complex, and its trihydrated complex are 9.6, 14.2, 16.0, and 16.8 Debye, respectively.

Detection of a multi–disease biomarker in saliva with graphene field effect transistors

Human carbonic anhydrase 1 (CA1) has been suggested as a biomarker for identification of several diseases including cancers, pancreatitis, diabetes, and Sjogren’s syndrome. However, the lack of a rapid, cheap, accurate, and easy-to-use quantification technique has prevented widespread utilization of CA1 for practical clinical applications. To this end, we present a label-free electronic biosensor for detection of CA1 utilizing highly sensitive graphene field effect transistors (G-FETs) as a transducer and specific RNA aptamers as a probe. The binding of CA1 with aptamers resulted in a positive shift in Dirac voltage V D of the G-FETs, the magnitude of which depended on target concentration. These aptameric G-FET biosensors showed the binding affinity (K D ) of ~2.3 ng/ml (70 pM), which is four orders lower than that reported using a gel shift assay. This lower value of K D enabled us to achieve a detection range (10 pg/ml - 100 ng/ml) which is well in line with the clinically relevant range. These highly sensitive devices allowed us to further prove their clinical relevance by successfully detecting the presence of CA1 in human saliva samples. In conclusion, the utilization of this label-free biosensor could facilitate the early stage identification of various diseases associated with changes in concentration of CAs.

Interferometric 4D-STEM for Lattice Distortion and Interlayer Spacing Measurements of Bilayer and Trilayer 2D Materials

Van der Waals materials composed of stacks of individual atomic layers have attracted considerable attention due to their exotic electronic properties that can be altered by, e.g., manipulating the twist angle of bilayer materials or the stacking sequence of trilayer materials. To fully understand and control the unique properties of these few-layer materials, a technique that can provide information about their local in-plane structural deformations, twist direction, and out-of-plane structure is needed. In principle, interference in overlap regions of Bragg disks originating from separate layers of a material encodes 3D information about the relative positions of atoms in the corresponding layers. Here, an interferometric 4D scanning transmission electron microscopy technique is described that utilizes this phenomenon to extract precise structural information from few-layer materials with nm-scale resolution. It is demonstrated how this technique enables measurement of local pm-scale in-plane lattice distortions as well as twist direction and average interlayer spacings in bilayer and trilayer graphene, and therefore provides a means to better understand the interplay between electronic properties and precise structural arrangements of few-layer 2D materials.

Genome‐wide association studies on resistance to powdery mildew in cultivated emmer wheat

Abstract Powdery mildew, caused by the fungal pathogenBlumeria graminis(DC.) E. O. Speer f. sp.triticiEm. Marchal (Bgt), is a constant threat to global wheat (Triticum aestivumL.) production. Although ∼100 powdery mildew (Pm) resistance genes and alleles have been identified in wheat and its relatives, more is needed to minimizeBgt’s fast evolving virulence. In tetraploid wheat (Triticum turgidumL.), wild emmer wheat [T. turgidumssp.dicoccoides(Körn. ex Asch. & Graebn.) Thell.] accessions from Israel have contributed manyPmresistance genes. However, the diverse genetic reservoirs of cultivated emmer wheat [T. turgidumssp.dicoccum(Schrank ex Schübl.) Thell.] have not been fully exploited. In the present study, we evaluated a diverse panel of 174 cultivated emmer accessions for their reaction toBgtisolateOKS(14)‐B‐3‐1and found that 66% of accessions, particularly those of Ethiopian (30.5%) and Indian (6.3%) origins, exhibited high resistance. To determine the genetic basis ofBgtresistance in the panel, genome‐wide association studies were performed using 46,383 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) from genotype‐by‐sequencing and 4331 SNPs from the 9K SNP Infinium array. Twenty‐five significant SNP markers were identified to be associated withBgtresistance, of which 21 SNPs are likely novel loci, whereas four possibly represent emmer derivedPm4a,Pm5a,PmG16, andPm64. Most novel loci exhibited minor effects, whereas three novel loci on chromosome arms 2AS, 3BS, and 5AL had major effect on the phenotypic variance. This study demonstrates cultivated emmer as a rich source of powdery mildew resistance, and the resistant accessions and novel loci found herein can be utilized in wheat breeding programs to enhanceBgtresistance in wheat.

Classical eikonal from Magnus expansion

In a classical scattering problem, the classical eikonal is defined as the generator of the canonical transformation that maps in-states to out-states. It can be regarded as the classical limit of the log of the quantum S-matrix. In a classical analog of the Born approximation in quantum mechanics, the classical eikonal admits an expansion in oriented tree graphs, where oriented edges denote retarded/advanced worldline propagators. The Magnus expansion, which takes the log of a time-ordered exponential integral, offers an efficient method to compute the coefficients of the tree graphs to all orders. We exploit a Hopf algebra structure behind the Magnus expansion to develop a fast algorithm which can compute the tree coefficients up to the 12th order (over half a million trees) in less than an hour. In a relativistic setting, our methods can be applied to the post-Minkowskian (PM) expansion for gravitational binaries in the worldline formalism. We demonstrate the methods by computing the 3PM eikonal and find agreement with previous results based on amplitude methods. Importantly, the Magnus expansion yields a finite eikonal, while the naïve eikonal based on the time-symmetric propagator is infrared-divergent from 3PM on.

Test of lepton universality with $ {\Lambda}_b^0\to {pK}^{-}{\mathrm{\ell}}^{+}{\mathrm{\ell}}^{-}$ decays

The ratio of branching fractions of the decays \( {\Lambda}_b^0 \) → pK - e + e - and \( {\Lambda}_b^0 \) → pK - μ + μ - , \( {R}_{pK}^{-1} \) , is measured for the first time using proton-proton collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 4 . 7 fb - 1 recorded with the LHCb experiment at center-of-mass energies of 7, 8 and 13 TeV. In the dilepton mass-squared range 0 . 1 < q 2 < 6 . 0 GeV 2 /c 4 and the pK - mass range m ( pK - ) < 2600 MeV /c 2 , the ratio of branching fractions is measured to be \( {R}_{pK}^{-1}={1.17}_{-0.16}^{+0.18}\pm 0.07 \) , where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. This is the first test of lepton universality with b baryons and the first observation of the decay \( {\Lambda}_b^0 \) → pK - e + e - .

Search for Higgs boson decays to a Z boson and a photon in proton-proton collisions at $ \sqrt{s} $ = 13 TeV

Results are presented from a search for the Higgs boson decay H → Zγ, where Z → ℓ$^{+}$ℓ$^{−}$ with ℓ = e or μ. The search is performed using a sample of proton-proton (pp) collision data at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, recorded by the CMS experiment at the LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb$^{−1}$. Events are assigned to mutually exclusive categories, which exploit differences in both event topology and kinematics of distinct Higgs production mechanisms to enhance signal sensitivity. The signal strength μ, defined as the product of the cross section and the branching fraction $ \left[\sigma \left(\textrm{pp}\to \textrm{H}\right)\mathcal{B}\left(\textrm{H}\to \textrm{Z}\upgamma \right)\right] $ relative to the standard model prediction, is extracted from a simultaneous fit to the ℓ$^{+}$ℓ$^{−}$γ invariant mass distributions in all categories and is measured to be μ = 2.4 ± 0.9 for a Higgs boson mass of 125.38 GeV. The statistical significance of the observed excess of events is 2.7 standard deviations. This measurement corresponds to $ \left[\sigma \left(\textrm{pp}\to \textrm{H}\right)\mathcal{B}\left(\textrm{H}\to \textrm{Z}\upgamma \right)\right]=0.21\pm 0.08 $ pb. The observed (expected) upper limit at 95% confidence level on μ is 4.1 (1.8), where the expected limit is calculated under the background-only hypothesis. The ratio of branching fractions $ \mathcal{B}\left(\textrm{H}\to \textrm{Z}\upgamma \right)/\mathcal{B}\left(\textrm{H}\to \upgamma \upgamma \right) $ is measured to be $ {1.5}_{-0.6}^{+0.7} $, which agrees with the standard model prediction of 0.69 ± 0.04 at the 1.5 standard deviation level.[graphic not available: see fulltext]

Searches for 25 rare and forbidden decays of D + and ${D}_s^{+}$ mesons

A search is performed for rare and forbidden charm decays of the form ${D}_{(s)}^{+}\to {h}^{\pm }{\mathrm{\ell}}^{+}{\mathrm{\ell}}^{\left(\prime \right)\mp } $, where h ± is a pion or kaon and ℓ (')± is an electron or muon. The measurements are performed using proton-proton collision data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.6 fb –1 , collected by the LHCb experiment in 2016. No evidence is observed for the 25 decay modes that are investigated and 90 % confidence level limits on the branching fractions are set between 1.4 × 10 –8 and 6.4 × 10 –6 . In most cases, these results represent an improvement on existing limits by one to two orders of magnitude.

Measurement of the cross section of top quark-antiquark pair production in association with a W boson in proton-proton collisions at $ \sqrt{s} $ = 13 TeV

The production of a top quark-antiquark pair in association with a W boson ($ \textrm{t}\overline{\textrm{t}}\textrm{W} $) is measured in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. The analyzed data was recorded by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC and corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb$^{−1}$. Events with two or three leptons (electrons and muons) and additional jets are selected. In events with two leptons, a multiclass neural network is used to distinguish between the signal and background processes. Events with three leptons are categorized based on the number of jets and of jets originating from b quark hadronization, and the lepton charges. The inclusive $ \textrm{t}\overline{\textrm{t}}\textrm{W} $ production cross section in the full phase space is measured to be 868 ± 40(stat) ± 51(syst) fb. The $ \textrm{t}\overline{\textrm{t}}\textrm{W} ^{+}$ and $ \textrm{t}\overline{\textrm{t}}\textrm{W} ^{−}$ cross sections are also measured as 553 ± 30(stat) ± 30(syst) and 343 ± 26(stat) ± 25(syst) fb, respectively, and the corresponding ratio of the two cross sections is found to be $ 1.61\pm 0.15{\left(\textrm{stat}\right)}_{-0.05}^{+0.07}\left(\textrm{syst}\right) $. The measured cross sections are larger than but consistent with the standard model predictions within two standard deviations, and represent the most precise measurement of these cross sections to date.[graphic not available: see fulltext]

Study of Υ(10753) decays to π+π−Υ(nS) final states at Belle II

Abstract We present an analysis of the processe + e − →π + π − Υ(nS) (wheren= 1, 2, or 3) reconstructed in 19.6 fb −1 of Belle II data during a special run of the SuperKEKB collider at four energy points near the peak of the Υ(10753) resonance. By analyzing the mass distribution of theπ + π − Υ(nS) system and the Born cross sections of thee + e − →π + π − Υ(nS) process, we report the first observation of Υ(10753) decays to theπ + π − Υ(1S) andπ + π − Υ(2S) final states, and find no evidence for decays toπ + π − Υ(3S). Possible intermediate states in theπ + π − Υ(1S,2S) transitions are also investigated, and no evidence for decays proceeding via the$$ {\pi}^{\mp }{Z}_b^{\pm } $$ π ∓ Z b ± orf 0 (980)Υ(nS) intermediate states is found. We measure Born cross sections for thee + e − →π + π − Υ(nS) process that, combined with results from Belle, obtain the mass and width of Υ(10753) to be (10756.6 ± 2.7 ± 0.9) MeV/c 2 and (29.0 ± 8.8 ± 1.2) MeV, respectively. The relative ratios of the Born cross sections at the Υ(10753) resonance peak are also reported for the first time.
