Practical Start-Up Process of Multiple Grid-Tied Voltage-Sourced Inverters in Laboratory

Starting up inverter-based resources (IBRs) and integrating them into a grid are important in real-world engineering and there are many challenges to be tackled. Using a laboratory-scale hardware test bed (50 Watt and 20 V), this paper demonstrates the challenges and provides a practical start-up process that can smoothly energize two grid-tied voltage-sourced inverters (VSI) and synchronize the VSIs into a 60-Hz grid. The hardware test bed consists of two SiC VSIs and a 45-kW Chroma grid simulator to act as the grid. The inverter controls are implemented in OPAL-RT OP5600, which has the measurements sensed, control algorithms processed, and gate signals generated and sent to the VSI switches. This research focuses on examining how to energize VSIs and how to synchronize the VSIs into the grid. The best energizing approach is summarized based on comparison and analysis of the experiment results. The presented approach can prevent large transients during the start-up process.

Sensor Drift Estimation for Reactor Systems by Fusing Multiple Sensor Measurements

A nuclear power plant is instrumented with a variety of sensors that monitor its variables to estimate the state and initiate safety actions, if needed. We address the problem of estimating drifts or errors in sensor measurements due to factors such as calibration changes. We propose an information fusion method that uses measurements from other sensors to generate an estimate of a sensor measurement, and its difference from an actual measurement provides an error estimate. We present two fusers based on the ensemble of trees and support vector machine that are trained using sensor measurements collected at an emulated test loop of a pressurized water reactor under no-drift conditions. We present error estimates for a differential pressure sensor of the heat exchanger of the primary coolant system, under twenty controlled scenarios using the test loop. Both positive and negative errors are captured by both methods in scenarios involving calibration drifts, blocking, air gap and electromagnetic interference. The root mean square errors of estimated drifts are typically within 2% percent of the maximum.

Activation Energy for Solder Bond Degradation: Thermal Cycling of Field-aged Modules at Multiple Upper Temperatures

The reliability of solder joints in the solar cell metallization-interconnect system influences the lifetime of photovoltaic modules. Two field-aged modules-one with Sn 62 Pb 36 Ag 2 solder at the solder joints (Solarex MSX 60), and the other with the standard Sn 60 Pb 40 solder (Siemens M55)-were subjected to a modified thermal cycling (TC) test of IEC 61215. Three sections in each module were maintained at 85 degrees C, 95 degrees C, and 105 degrees C during the 15-minute high temperature dwell time. Current equivalent to the module short-circuit current was injected through the module when the chamber temperature was above 25 degrees C to simulate regular field operation. This novel approach aims to induce thermomechanical fatigue (TMF) at the solder joints and intermetallic compound (IMC) formation at the metal/solder interfaces. The activation energy (E a ) for solder bond degradation was calculated based on the series resistance (R s ) increase in TC testing rather than power drop to avoid the effect of confounding variables. Module-level R s increase in MSX 60 module after TC800 cycles and in M55 module after TC400 cycles was 1.22% and 183.7%, respectively. The E a determined for the module with 2wt% Ag is 0.24 eV and for that with the standard solder is 0.27 eV. The solder bond degradation seems to have been driven by TMF rather than IMC formation for both modules.

Real-Time Radiological Source Term Estimation for Multiple Sources in Cluttered Environments

A particle filter algorithm is presented to estimate the position, strength, and cardinality of an unknown number of radioactive point sources in an obstacle-rich environment using count measurements. The algorithm addresses gaps in the prior literature by incorporating two novel elements. The first is a precomputation step in which local terrain and obstacle data is processed to compute attenuation kernels throughout the search area. This enables rapid estimation performance in obstacle-rich environments as measurements are gathered. The second novel feature is a dynamic particle allocation technique in which the number of particles is adjusted in real time to meet convergence goals. This feature allows the algorithm to scale more efficiently to scenarios with a larger number of sources. Furthermore, a series of computational experiments using simulated data demonstrates the algorithm’s performance in a cluttered environment with up to eight sources.
