The reliability of solder joints in the solar cell metallization-interconnect system influences the lifetime of photovoltaic modules. Two field-aged modules-one with Sn 62 Pb 36 Ag 2 solder at the solder joints (Solarex MSX 60), and the other with the standard Sn 60 Pb 40 solder (Siemens M55)-were subjected to a modified thermal cycling (TC) test of IEC 61215. Three sections in each module were maintained at 85 degrees C, 95 degrees C, and 105 degrees C during the 15-minute high temperature dwell time. Current equivalent to the module short-circuit current was injected through the module when the chamber temperature was above 25 degrees C to simulate regular field operation. This novel approach aims to induce thermomechanical fatigue (TMF) at the solder joints and intermetallic compound (IMC) formation at the metal/solder interfaces. The activation energy (E a ) for solder bond degradation was calculated based on the series resistance (R s ) increase in TC testing rather than power drop to avoid the effect of confounding variables. Module-level R s increase in MSX 60 module after TC800 cycles and in M55 module after TC400 cycles was 1.22% and 183.7%, respectively. The E a determined for the module with 2wt% Ag is 0.24 eV and for that with the standard solder is 0.27 eV. The solder bond degradation seems to have been driven by TMF rather than IMC formation for both modules.

A particle filter algorithm is presented to estimate the position, strength, and cardinality of an unknown number of radioactive point sources in an obstacle-rich environment using count measurements. The algorithm addresses gaps in the prior literature by incorporating two novel elements. The first is a precomputation step in which local terrain and obstacle data is processed to compute attenuation kernels throughout the search area. This enables rapid estimation performance in obstacle-rich environments as measurements are gathered. The second novel feature is a dynamic particle allocation technique in which the number of particles is adjusted in real time to meet convergence goals. This feature allows the algorithm to scale more efficiently to scenarios with a larger number of sources. Furthermore, a series of computational experiments using simulated data demonstrates the algorithm’s performance in a cluttered environment with up to eight sources.

Summary Microalgae as a biofuel source are of great interest. Bacterial phycosphere inhabitants of algal cultures are hypothesized to contribute to productivity. In this study, the bacterial composition of the Chlorella sorokiniana phycosphere was determined over several production cycles in different growing seasons by 16S rRNA gene sequencing and identification. The diversity of the phycosphere increased with time during each individual reactor run, based on Faith’s phylogenetic diversity metric versus days post‐inoculation ( R = 0.66, P < 0.001). During summer months, Vampirovibrio chlorellavorus , an obligate predatory bacterium, was prevalent. Bacterial sequences assigned to the Rhizobiales, Betaproteobacteriales and Chitinophagales were positively associated with algal biomass productivity. Applications of the general biocide, benzalkonium chloride, to a subset of experiments intended to abate V. chlorellavorus appeared to temporarily suppress phycosphere bacterial growth, however, there was no relationship between those bacterial taxa suppressed by benzalkonium chloride and their association with algal productivity, based on multinomial model correlations. Algal health was approximated using a model‐based metric, or the ‘Health Index’ that indicated a robust, positive relationship between C. sorokiniana fitness and presence of members belonging to the Burholderiaceae and Allorhizobium–Neorhizobium–Pararhizobium–Rhizobium clade. Bacterial community composition was linked to the efficiency of microalgal biomass production and algal health.
Abstract Connexins, which comprise gap junctions (GJs) via homotypic/heterotypic oligomerization, act as channels to connect opposing cells, mainly in solid organs such as the skin, liver, heart, and central/peripheral nervous system. Connexins are synthesized in the endoplasmic reticulum, assembled in the Golgi apparatus as hexamers, and inserted into the cell membrane as hemichannels. These hemichannels are closed under normal conditions until they combine to form clusters and connect to neighboring cells via GJs in a head‐to‐head configuration. Opening of hemichannels, which depends on the intra‐ or extracellular environment, allows various bioactive molecules to enter into or be released from the host cells. Recent pathological studies on human demyelinating diseases have revealed alterations of connexin expression patterns in demyelinating lesions. To elucidate the molecular mechanisms of connexins in the pathomechanisms of inflammatory demyelination, we induced experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE) in connexin 30 (Cx30)‐deficient mice, oligodendroglia‐specific Cx47‐ablated mice, and astroglia‐specific Cx43‐ablated mice. We found that both astroglial‐Cx30‐deficient mice and Cx43‐ablated mice showed amelioration of the clinical course of EAE, while oligodendroglial‐Cx47‐ablated mice showed aggravation. These findings indicate the distinct role of connexins expressed in different cell types and the substantial contribution of connexin‐mediated pathology to demyelinating disorders. The imbalance in connexin expression, which is caused by the inflammatory environment, results in an increase in hemichannels in glial cells. The release of proinflammatory molecules induced by the increase in hemichannels on activated glial cells is a crucial mechanism of demyelinating disorders.
