Electroslag and electrogas welding

These two new joining methods perform welding in the vertical position, and therein lies the secret of their impressive advantages in material handling, in weld preparation, in welding speed, in freedom from distortion, and in weld soundness. Once the work has been set in the proper vertical position for welding, no further plate handling is required. The molten filler metal is held in place by copper shoes or dams, and the weld is completed in one pass.

Fastening on the F-14A for cost effective fatigue resistance

Cost effectiveness airframe considerations dictated a variable geometry wing design that requires weight optimization, maximum working stress resistance and minimum fatigue concentration factors. The extensive use of titanium structural materials employed electron beam welding methods and interference fit fastening techniques as principle mechanical joining means for economic F-14A production and reliability engineering.

Project Pyralp: Tectonics relationships between Pyrenees and Alps (Southern France)

The author has identified the following significant results. In the Eastern Aquitaine Basin in southern France, investigations using SL 3 photographs from an S190A camera reveal a slight line joining a Paleozoic trend of the Montagne Noire massif to a more recent Pyrenean fault zone of Cretaceous to Tertiary age. According to the interpretation of this line as the superficial geomorphological trace of a deep-seated fault zone, Hercynian weakness lines appear to have played a more important part than previously thought in the building of the Pyrenean range. The Lezat line is a trend of small morphological features obvious only in the photographs having the highest resolution.

Research study on materials processing in space experiment number M512

Adhesion of the melted metals to the adjacent solid metals, and cohesion of the liquid metal to itself appeared to be equally as strong in zero gravity as on earth. Similar cut edge bead periodicity in cut thin plate, and similar periodic chevron patterns in full penetration welds were seen. The most significant practical result is that the design of braze joints for near zero gravity can be very tolerant of dimensional gaps in the joint. This conclusion is based on a comparison of narrow, wide and variable gap widths. Brazing is very practical as a joining or repairing technique for metal structures at zero gravity. The operation of the hardware developed to locate successive small (0.6 cm) diameter cylinders in the focus of the battery powered EB unit, melt the various metal specimens and deploy some liquid metal drops to drift in space, was generally successful. However, the sphericity and surface roughness were far from those of ball bearings.

Engineering principles to assure compatible docking between future spacecraft of USA and USSR

An androgynous peripheral type docking mechanism concept selected by the U.S. and the USSR is described. The rationale supporting the selection of the concept, the mechanical principles inherent to the concept, and the probable nature of future designs stemming from the concept are discussed. Operational situations prior to docking, impact conditions, energy absorption, and structural joining of two spacecraft are examined.

Weld-brazing of titanium

A joining process, designated weld-brazing, which combines resistance spot-welding and brazing has been developed at the NASA Langley Research Center. Resistance spot-welding is employed to position and aline the parts and to establish a suitable faying surface gap for brazing and contributes to the integrity of the joint. Brazing enhances the properties of the joint and reduces the stress concentrations normally associated with spotwelds. Ti-6Al-4V titanium alloy joints have been fabricated using 3003 aluminum braze both in a vaccum furnace and in a retort containing an inert gas environment.

Mesozoic thermal events in southeast China

A new set of age data on some granitic batholiths of southeast China is reported. It is shown that these new data support the postulate of Larsen and Putman (1972) that, during the late Mesozoic, the Pacific sea floor was spreading from at least five spreading centers joined at two triple points. Attention is called to the coeval occurrence of paired metamorphism and intrusion on both sides of the Pacific during the Mesozoic.

Rotational excitation of HCN by collisions

Rate constants for the rotational excitation of HCN by collisions with He atoms at temperatures below 100 K were computed from first principles and are presented in tabular form. The potential energy surface was obtained by using the uniform electron gas model of Gordon and Kim (1972) and then joined smoothly to the asymptotic long-range perturbation theory potential valid at large separations. Quantum close-coupling theory was used to analyze the collision dynamics. Individual rates are believed to be accurate to within 50% above 30 K and within a factor of two below 20 K. The results should be extendable to excitation by collision with H2 and may therefore be of value in the study of interstellar clouds.

Physical forces influencing Skylab experiments M551, M552, and M553

The forces concerned with metals melting, exothermic brazing, and sphere forming experiments on Skylab 1 mission are reported. The conclusions reached are that no significant practical differences exist between terrestrial and microgravity electron beam melting, and braze gap clearances are far less critical to joining operations in space than on earth. Altered microstructures, increased grain refinement, and the appearance of a single, large interior shrinkage pore were found in the Skylab specimens.

Spoked wheels to deploy large surfaces in space-weight estimates for solar arrays

Extensible booms were used to deploy and support solar cell arrays of varying areas. Solar cell array systems were built with one or two booms to deploy and tension a blanket with attached cells and bussing. A segmented and hinged rim supported by spokes joined to a common hub is described. This structure can be compactly packaged and deployed.

Solid state welding processes for an oxide dispersion strengthened nickel-chromium-aluminum alloy

Solid-state welding processes were evaluated for joining TD-NiCrAl (Ni-16Cr-4Al-2ThO2) alloy sheet. Both hot-press and resistance spot welding techniques were successfully applied in terms of achieving grain growth across the bond line. Less success was achieved with a resistance seam welding process. In stress-rupture shear and tensile shear tests of lap joints at 1100 C, most failures occurred in the parent material, which indicates that the weld quality was good and that the welds were not a plane of weakness. The overall weld quality was not as good as previously attained with TD-NiCr, probably because the presence of alumina at the faying surfaces and the developmental TD-NiCrAl sheet, which was not of the quality of the TD-NiCr sheet in terms of surface flatness and dimensional control.

Solar array welding developement

The present work describes parallel gap welding as used for joining solar cells to the cell interconnect system. Sample preparation, weldable cell parameter evaluation, bond scheduling, bond strength evaluation, and bonding and thermal shock tests are described. A range of weld schedule parameters - voltage, time, and force - can be identified for various cell/interconnect designs that will provide adequate bond strengths and acceptably small electrical degradation. Automation of solar array welding operations to a significant degree has been achieved in Europe and will be receiving increased attention in the U.S. to reduce solar array fabrication costs.
