Personalized Tucker Decomposition: Modeling Commonality and Peculiarity on Tensor Data

In this paper, we propose a personalized Tucker decomposition (perTucker) to address the limitations of traditional tensor decomposition methods in capturing heterogeneity across different datasets. perTucker decomposes tensor data into shared global components and personalized local components. We introduce an order orthogonality assumption and develop a proximal gradient regularized block coordinate descent algorithm guaranteed to converge to a stationary point. The unique and common representations learned by perTucker reveal intrinsic statistical patterns in data and provide valuable information for a wide range of downstream analytics, including anomaly detection, source classification, and clustering. We demonstrate perTucker’s effectiveness through a simulation study and two case studies on solar flare detection and tonnage signal classification.

An Unsteady Actuator Line Solver to Enable Adjoint Sensitivity Studies for Wake Steering

This study demonstrates the sensitivity of wind turbine wake steering performance to blade design. An actuator line model was implemented within an unsteady adjoint solver that enables efficient execution of gradient-based optimization and sensitivity studies. After first confirming the feasibility of wake steering by controlling actuator line chord profiles and formulating a suitable objective function for wake position, a sensitivity study was conducted to determine the relative importance of chord length as a function of spanwise position on the resulting turbine wake deflection. The results presented here support the idea that blade design choices play a role in wake control. In a larger context, this study demonstrates a computational framework in which turbine and blade designs can be studied at the individual and farm-wide level to enhance wind plant controllability and manage power output.

Wind Farm Wakes and Farm-to-Farm Interactions: Lidar and Wind Tunnel Tests

Recent experimental and numerical evidence has shown that the cumulative wake generated from the overlapping of multiple wakes within a wind farm could reduce power performance and enhance fatigue loads of wind turbines installed in neighboring downstream wind farms and may also extend up to distances one order of magnitude larger than those typically considered for intra-farm wake interactions. Similar to individual wind turbine wakes, wind farm wakes have a velocity deficit and added turbulence intensity, both affected by the turbine rotor thrust forces and the incoming turbulence intensity. Therefore, the evolution of wind farm wakes will vary for different operational and atmospheric conditions. In this paper, lidar measurements collected during the American WAKE experimeNt (AWAKEN) and wind tunnel tests of wind farms reproduced by porous disks are leveraged to investigate wind farm wakes.

Defect passivation of perovskites in high efficiency solar cells

Abstract Metal halide perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have enormous potential as the next-generation photovoltaic technology. Being solution-processed at relatively low temperatures, it is inevitable that crystallographic defects are formed in abundance during fabrication. Such defects may cause undesirable energy losses by non-radiative recombination to limit the performance of PSCs. More importantly, it has become apparent that defect activity is fundamentally responsible for the operational instability issues hindering the commercialization readiness of PSCs. It is therefore necessary to develop strategies to minimize defect formation and to passivate formed defects. Here, we discuss recent advances on such defect mitigation and passivation strategies. We especially emphasize on methodologies that are incorporated into state-of-the-art PSCs that have demonstrated world record efficiencies and long-term stability.

Intrinsic and Extrinsic Factors Influencing the Dynamics of VO 2 Mott Oscillators

Oscillatory devices have gained significant interest recently as key components of computing systems based on biomimetic neuronal spiking. An understanding of the time scales underlying the spiking is essential for engineering fast, controllable, low energy devices. However, we find that the intrinsic dynamics of these devices are difficult to properly characterize, as they can be heavily influenced by the external circuitry used to measure them. Here we demonstrate these challenges using a VO 2 Mott oscillator with a sub-100 nm effective size, achieved using a nanogap cut in a metallic carbon nanotube electrode. Given the nanoscale thermal volume of this device, it would be expected to exhibit rapid oscillations. However, due to external parasitics present within commonly used current sources, we see orders of magnitude slower dynamics. Here, we outline methods for determining when measurements are dominated by extrinsic factors and discuss the operating conditions under which intrinsic oscillation frequencies may be observed.

Quantum system dynamics with a weakly nonlinear Josephson junction bath

Here, we investigate the influence of a weakly nonlinear Josephson bath consisting of a chain of Josephson junctions on the dynamics of a small quantum system (LC oscillator). Focusing on the regime where the charging energy is the largest energy scale, we perturbatively calculate the correlation function of the Josephson bath to the leading order in the Josephson energy divided by the charging energy while keeping the cosine potential exactly. When the variation of the charging energy along the chain ensures fast decay of the bath correlation function, the dynamics of the LC oscillator that is weakly and capacitively coupled to the Josephson bath can be solved through the Markovian master equation. We establish a duality relation for the Josephson bath between the regimes of large charging and Josephson energies, respectively. The results can be applied to cases where the charging energy either is nonuniformly engineered or disordered in the chain. Furthermore, we find that the Josephson bath may become non-Markovian when the temperature is increased beyond the zero-temperature limit in that the bath correlation function gets shifted by a constant and does not decay with time.

Topological Defect Mediated Helical Phase Reorientation by Uniaxial Stress

Strain engineering enables precise, energy-efficient control of nanoscale magnetism. However, unlike well-studied strain-dislocation interactions in mechanical deformation, the spatial evolution of strain-induced spin rearrangement remains poorly understood. Using Lorentz transmission electron microscopy, we manipulate and observe helical domain reorientation under quantitatively applied uniaxial tensile stress. Our findings reveal striking similarity to plastic deformation in metals, where the critical stress for propagation vector ( Q ) reorientation depends on its angle with the stress direction. Magnetic defects mediate reorientation via “break-and-reconnect” or “dislocation gliding–annihilation” processes. Simulations confirm that strain-induced anisotropic Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction may play a key role. These insights advance strain-driven magnetism and offer a promising route for energy-efficient magnetic nanophase control in next-generation information technology. RMCProfile7 : reverse Monte Carlo for multiphase systems

This work introduces a completely rewritten version of the programRMCProfile(version 7), big-box, reverse Monte Carlo modelling software for analysis of total scattering data. The major new feature ofRMCProfile7is the ability to refine multiple phases simultaneously, which is relevant for many current research areas such as energy materials, catalysis and engineering. Other new features include improved support for molecular potentials and rigid-body refinements, as well as multiple different data sets. An empirical resolution correction and calculation of the pair distribution function as a back-Fourier transform are now also available.RMCProfile7is freely available for download at https://rmcprofile.ornl.gov/.

Design Optimization for Weighted Conduction Loss Minimization in a Dual-Active-Bridge-Based PV Microinverter

This manuscript presents a harmonic-superposition based frequency-domain approach for analysis and optimal design of a single-stage DAB-based DC-AC converter used in low-voltage DC to high voltage AC applications, such as PV microinverter. Specifically, two topological variations and correspondingly different modulation strategies involving up to four control variables (three phase shifts and switching frequency) are analyzed. Optimal trajectories of control variables are determined that result in minimized transformer RMS current at a given average power, while enforcing near-uniform ZVS. To make the design process holistic, an outer optimization loop is used to determine optimal values for the power transfer inductance (integrated as the transformer’s leakage inductance) and turns ratio, which minimize the weighted-average conduction loss contribution to the microinverter’s CEC efficiency. Based on the optimization analyses, a 400 W microinverter prototype is built and experimental results at one operating point are presented, achieving a measured efficiency of 92.8%.

CCM vs. CRM Design Optimization of a Boost-derived Parallel Active Power Decoupler for Microinverter Applications

Single-phase inverter or rectifier systems often make use of an auxiliary active power decoupler (APD) to balance the mismatch between steady DC power and fluctuating AC power. This paper deals with efficiency and size optimization of a parallel boost-type APD circuit for PV microinverter applications. Specifically, design of an eGaNFET-based, 400 W APD circuit, employing planar inductor and operating in either continuous conduction mode (CCM) or critical conduction mode (CRM) is considered. Available design variables including inductance value, inductor core geometry, capacitor voltage, switching frequency, and modulation scheme (CCM vs. CRM) are explored to identify Pareto-optimal configurations, which can achieve low California Energy Commission (CEC) efficiency drop while also reducing the footprint area of the inductor. The theoretical study predicts that the optimal CRM design can achieve 37% reduced inductor size, while operating with similar efficiency drop, compared to the optimal CCM design. Experimental results, obtained using two separate 40 V, 400 W hardware prototypes for CCM and CRM, are presented to verify the analyses.
