Impedance Measurements of Motor Drives and Supplies in NASA NEAT Facility

Many electrified aircraft configurations consist of a number of power components operating on the same shared electrical bus. Understanding the impedance performance of electrical loads and sources is key to understanding, and designing for, acceptable overall vehicle power quality and power system stability. This paper discusses impedance measurements made on the NASA Electric Aircraft Testbed (NEAT) Electrical Power System (EPS) at NASA Glenn Research Center. First, an overall discussion of the NEAT facility configuration during testing is presented. Then, details of the impedance measurement approach and the various testing configurations are discussed. Next, input impedance measurements at NEAT, including sources (DC supplies) and loads (multiple motor drives, electric machines, and resistive load banks, with long interconnecting cable leads), are performed under a number of conditions, and results, including load model comparisons and stability analysis, are presented and discussed.

Tree Growth Enhancement Drives a Persistent Biomass Gain in Unmanaged Temperate Forests

While enhanced tree growth over the last decades has been reported in forests across the globe, it remains unclear whether it drives persistent biomass increases of forest stands, particularly in mature forests. Enhanced tree growth and stand-level biomass are often linked with a simultaneous increase in density-driven mortality and a reduction in tree longevity. Identifying empirical evidence regarding the balance between these processes is challenging due to the confounding effects of stand history, management, and environmental changes. Here, we investigate the link between growth and biomass via the negative relationship between average tree size and stand density (tree number per area). We find increasing stand density for a given mean tree size in unmanaged closed-canopy forests in Switzerland over the past six decades and a positive relationship between tree growth and stand density across forest plots—qualitatively consistent with our simulations using a mechanistic, cohort-resolving ecosystem model (BiomeE). Model simulations show that, in the absence of other disturbances, enhanced tree growth persistently increases biomass stocks despite simultaneous decreases in carbon residence time and tree longevity. However, the magnitude of simulated biomass changes for a given growth enhancement critically depends on the shape of the mortality functions. Our analyses reconcile reports of growth-induced reductions of tree longevity with model predictions of persistent biomass increases, and with our finding of trends toward denser forests in response to growth—also in mature stands.

Composition, Mineralogy, and Noble-Gas Content of Apollo 17 Particles and Soils from the 73002 Drive Tube

As part of the Apollo Next-Generation Sample Analysis (ANGSA) program, our Moon United team studied particles and soil samples from the 73001/2 drive tube to understand the lithologies at the sample site and provide constraints on the regolith age. We report the bulk composition, mineralogy, petrology, and noble-gas assays of 21 lunar particles and two soils. Our petrologic and noble-gas data constrain the origin and exposure and gardening history of the lunar regolith at the Apollo 17 site and thereby provide crucial context to the exposure history experienced by volatile and organic compounds in these samples.

Petrography and Mineralogy of Basalt Fragments in Apollo 17 Double Drive Tube 73002 and 73001

The ANGSA program was formed, in part, to examine previously unstudied Apollo 17 double drive tube samples. As a part of this project, the Moon United team received eight basalt fragments from 73001 and 73002. Here we present the petrography and mineralogy of these basalt fragments. Methods: We analyzed the petrography and mineralogy of the 73001/73002 particles using Electron Probe Microanalysis (EMPA) at both Carnegie Institution for Science and the Smithsonian Institution. We made quantitative compositional maps for each sample following the methods of [1,2].

Solid State Drive Radiation Assurance With Active Testing

Automotive and industrial grade SSDs were tested for TID and SEE response at the assembly level to investigate radiation tolerance trends and explore radiation hardness assurance best practices in commercial memory devices. SSDs were installed in passive NVMe extenders to place only the drive in the beam line. A digital I/O module connected to the test computer provided inhibit signals to block both facility beam delivery and power while attempting recovery from any device failure conditions (e.g., failed write, failed read, or unresponsive device).

Self-Driving Telescopes: Autonomous Scheduling of Astronomical Observation Campaigns with Offline Reinforcement Learning

Modern astronomical experiments are designed to achieve multiple scientific goals, from studies of galaxy evolution to cosmic acceleration. These goals require data of many different classes of night-sky objects, each of which has a particular set of observational needs. These observational needs are typically in strong competition with one another. This poses a challenging multi-objective optimization problem that remains unsolved. The effectiveness of Reinforcement Learning (RL) as a valuable paradigm for training autonomous systems has been well-demonstrated, and it may provide the basis for self-driving telescopes capable of optimizing the scheduling for astronomy campaigns. Simulated datasets containing examples of interactions between a telescope and a discrete set of sky locations on the celestial sphere can be used to train an RL model to sequentially gather data from these several locations to maximize a cumulative reward as a measure of the quality of the data gathered. We use simulated data to test and compare multiple implementations of a Deep Q-Network (DQN) for the task of optimizing the schedule of observations from the Stone Edge Observatory (SEO). We combine multiple improvements on the DQN and adjustments to the dataset, showing that DQNs can achieve an average reward of 87%+-6% of the maximum achievable reward in each state on the test set. This is the first comparison of offline RL algorithms for a particular astronomical challenge and the first open-source framework for performing such a comparison and assessment task.

Packaging a 650V/400A GaN Half-bridge Power Module with Ultra-low Parasitics for Electric Vehicle Drive Applications

This paper proposes a compact and efficient half-bridge power module with three 650 V / 150 A GaN dies in parallel. The power module incorporates a main power printed circuit board (PCB), an interface PCB, and a flex PCB to achieve low parasitics in both power loop and gate-side connection, resolving the issue of high parasitics typically encountered with wire bonding in high-current applications. Additionally, the interface PCB decouples the design constraints between the power loop and the gate loops. The proposed design is optimized with a vertical loop configuration to reduce power loop inductance through magnetic flux cancellation. Finite element analysis indicates that the power loop inductance is 0.58 nH at 100 MHz, while the maximum die junction temperature reaches 131 °C under an ambient temperature of 65 °C and a load current of 385 A. The proposed multi-piece PCB structure reduces the inductance of the drive circuit to minimize EMI and to mitigate false triggering. At the same time, it reduces impedance mismatches across different driver circuits, thereby achieving dynamic current sharing in multi-chip parallel configurations. Under simulation conditions of 400 V / 385 A, the current imbalance among chips was limited to 5 A. A 400 V / 385 A double-pulse test was conducted to experimentally validate the performance of the proposed power module.

Trustworthiness and Trust: Identifying Factors that Drive Successful Human-AI Interaction in Nuclear Power Plant Applications

Emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) are rapidly evolving and considered a promising tool for efficient and continued safe operations of the U.S. nuclear power plants (NPPs). Emerging AI techniques like large language models (LLMs) are one such technology that may support personnel at existing NPPs perform work more efficiently. For example, operators may query the current operational status of a power plant via a chat interface leveraging LLMs to access plant-related information in an interactive manner rather than manually collecting various sensor data for tasks such as surveillances or completing work orders. This is a fundamental shift in the way operators currently perform their tasks today. The literature of human-automation interaction indicates that trust is a crucial factor that drives successful interaction between a human operator and an automated system, like an AI-infused NPP application. This work presents the results of a literature review on key factors that relate to trust in AI/LLM technologies for NPP applications. The relevant literature of human factors and cognitive engineering has identified various factors related to trust including trustworthiness, performance characteristics, operator skill and perceived risk. This preliminary literature review will guide development and evaluation of models involving the identified factors influencing trust in AI and develop a framework for human-centered design for interface between humans and AI. By addressing trust, this work supports developing a technical basis for designing key characteristics of AI/LLM to support calibrated trust, which will ultimately support wide-scale adoption of AI/LLM technologies, as well as ensure safe, effective, and reliable use.

Inertial Confinement Fusion—Experimental Physics: Laser Drive

Laser-driven inertial confinement fusion creates a central hot-spot plasma by irradiating a spherical target containing a thermonuclear fuel layer of deuterium (D) and tritium (T) with temporally-shaped, high-intensity lasers or X rays. Inertial confinement fusion relies on the DT-fusion alpha particles depositing their energy in a hot-spot plasma, causing its temperature to rise sharply and a thermonuclear burn wave to propagate out through the surrounding cold, dense DT fuel, producing significantly more energy than was used to heat and compress the fuel. Alpha heating has been demonstrated and burning plasma (i.e., yield amplification due to alpha heating >3.5) is being explored with megajoule-scale lasers on the path to ignition (i.e., yield amplification due to alpha heating >20)

Parameters and surrounding rock control of gob-side driving under double key stratum after roof cutting

Taking the return-airway 4204 with roof cutting in Longquan Coal Mine as the engineering background, roof structure, key parameters, and deviatoric stress evolution were studied. Conclusion: The Key Stratum within a 4–8 times mining height is considered as Near Key Stratum. Cutting the roof makes it possible to form a cantilever structure of the Key Stratum on the solid coal side, which is more conducive to the stability of gob-side roadway. During cutting angle of 90–55°, the deviatoric stress increases linearly, and the increase rate is coal pillar > solid coal > roof > floor. While cutting length from 0 to 35 m, the deviatoric stress decreases linearly, and the decreasing range: coal pillar > solid coal > roof > floor. When coal pillar width is from 30 to 4 m, the deviatoric stress of left side and floor presents a “single peak” distribution. The deviatoric stress of coal pillar changes from an asymmetric “double peak” to a bell-shaped distribution, and the deviatoric stress of roof changes from a “single peak” to an asymmetric “double peak” distribution. Under same coal pillar width, the deviatoric stress of left, coal pillar and roof after roof cutting decreases most obviously, followed by the floor. Finally, the coal pillar width is 8 m, the cutting angle is 75°, the cutting length is 20 m, and the hole spacing is 1.0 m. The support scheme is bolt + metal mesh + steel belt + anchor cable combined support. The stable period of roadway is about 10 days.

Present understanding of ignition and gain using indirect-drive inertial confinement fusion target designs on the U.S. National Ignition Facility

For many decades, the running joke in fusion research has been that 'fusion' is thirty years away and always will be. Yet, these past few years we find ourselves in a position where we can now talk about the milestones of burning plasmas, fusion ignition, and target energy gain greater than unity (scientific breakeven) in the past tense. Fusion is no longer a joke! Yet getting to fusion ignition, the tipping-point of thermonuclear instability resulting in an explosive increase in ion thermal temperature and fusion reaction-rate, and scientific breakeven (target gain, $G_{target} =$ fusion yield/deposited laser energy >1, in the laser-driven inertial confinement fusion context) has not been easy. Here, in this publication, we discuss our present understanding of the physics and technological challenges surrounding ignition and Gain as well as highlight some outstanding problems that still need resolution.
