Assessing atomically thin delta-doping of silicon using mid-infrared ellipsometry

Hydrogen lithography has been used to template phosphine-based surface chemistry to fabricate atomic-scale devices, a process we abbreviate as atomic precision advanced manufacturing (APAM). In this work, we use mid-infrared variable angle spectroscopic ellipsometry (IR-VASE) to characterize single-nanometer thickness phosphorus dopant layers (δ-layers) in silicon made using APAM compatible processes. A large Drude response is directly attributable to theδ-layer and can be used for nondestructive monitoring of the condition of the APAM layer when integrating additional processing steps. Furthermore, the carrier density and mobility extracted from our room temperature IR-VASE measurements are consistent with cryogenic magneto-transport measurements, showing that APAM δ-layers function at room temperature. Finally, the permittivity extracted from these measurements shows that the doping in the APAM δ-layers is so large that their low-frequency in-plane response is reminiscent of a silicide. However, there is no indication of a plasma resonance, likely due to reduced dimensionality and/or low scattering lifetime.

Search for Neutrino-Induced Neutral Current Delta Radiative Decay in MicroBooNE and a First Test of the MiniBooNE Low Energy Excess Under a Single Photon Hypothesis (submitted to PRL)

We report results from a search for neutrino-induced neutral current (NC) resonant Δ(1232) baryon production followed by Δ radiative decay, with a h0.8i GeV neutrino beam. Data corresponding to MicroBooNE’s first three years of operations (6.80×10 20 protons on target) are used to select single-photon events with one or zero protons and without charged leptons in the final state (1γ1p and 1γ0p, respectively). The background is constrained via an in-situ high-purity measurement of NC π 0 events, made possible via dedicated 2γ1p and 2γ0p selections. A total of 16 and 153 events are observed for the 1γ1p and 1γ0p selections, respectively, compared to a constrained background prediction of 20.5 ± 3.65(sys.) and 145.1 ± 13.8(sys.) events. The data lead to a bound on an anomalous enhancement of the normalization of NC Δ radiative decay of less than 2.3 times the predicted nominal rate for this process at the 90% confidence level (CL). The measurement disfavors a candidate photon interpretation of the MiniBooNE low-energy excess as a factor of 3.18 times the nominal NC Δ radiative decay rate at the 94.8% CL, in favor of the nominal prediction, and represents a greater than 50-fold improvement over the world’s best limit on single-photon production in NC interactions in the sub-GeV neutrino energy range.

Revealing conductivity of p-type delta layer systems for novel computing applications

This project uses a quantum simulation technique to reveal the true conducting properties of novel atomic precision advanced manufacturing materials. With Moore's law approaching the limit of scaling for the CMOS technology, it is crucial to provide the best computing power and resources to National Security missions. Atomic precision advanced manufacturing-based computing systems can become the key to the design, use, and security of modern weapon systems, critical infrastructure, and communications. We will utilize the state-of-the-art computational methodology to create a predictive simulator for p-type atomic precision advanced manufacturing systems, which may also find applications in counterfeit detection and anti-tamper.

NASA: Structure and Thermophysical Properties of Delta and Epsilon Zry4H x

Small-modular and micro-reactors are part of an emerging nuclear technology aimed to provide power to decentralized grids in civilian, industrial, and defense energy sectors. Resurgence in microreactor research is partly driven by demands for a mobile, safe, and compact energy platform for remote and strategic locations. The defining characteristics of the microreactor include its high-power density on a small footprint, its highly transportable design, and the use of high-assay low-enriched uranium (HALEU) fuel. Solid-state metal hydride neutron moderator components are considered for microreactor designs where the moderator functions to thermalize neutrons into lower energies for the fuel to achieve high fission rates. Zirconium hydride (ZrH x where x denotes the atomic hydrogen-to-metal ratio) is a leading moderator candidate material due to the combination of its low neutron absorption cross section, irradiation resistance, high hydrogen atomic density (upwards of 7.5 x 10 22 H atoms/cm 3 at low temperatures), and high hydrogen desorption (dissociation) temperature around 600 °C (873 K) compared to other metal hydrides. Its high-temperature stability enables operation of fuel temperatures into several hundred degrees Celsius for overall increased efficiency.
