Definition of display/control requirements for assault transport night/adverse weather capability

A Helicopter Night Vision System was developed to improve low-altitude night and/or adverse weather assult transport capabilities. Man-in-the-loop simulation experiments were performed to define the minimum display and control requirements for the assult transport mission and investigate forward looking infrared sensor requirements, along with alternative displays such as panel mounted displays (PMD) helmet mounted displays (HMD), and integrated control display units. Also explored were navigation requirements, pilot/copilot interaction, and overall cockpit arrangement. Pilot use of an HMD and copilot use of a PMD appear as both the preferred and most effective night navigation combination.

Improved definition of crustal magnetic anomalies for MAGSAT data

The routine correction of MAGSAT vector magnetometer data for external field effects such as the ring current and the daily variation by filtering long wavelength harmonics from the data is described. Separation of fields due to low altitude sources from those caused by high altitude sources is affected by means of dual harmonic expansions in the solution of Dirichlet's problem. This regression/harmonic filter procedure is applied on an orbit by orbit basis, and initial tests on MAGSAT data from orbit 1176 show reduction in external field residuals by 24.33 nT RMS in the horizontal component, and 10.95 nT RMS in the radial component.

Definition study for an advanced cosmic ray experiment utilizing the long duration exposure facility

To achieve the goals of cosmic ray astrophysics, an ultraheavy cosmic ray experiment on an LDEF reflight should be in an orbit with high inclination (approximately 57 deg) at approximately 230 nm for approximately 2 years near solar minimum (approximately 1986). It should fill 61 trays. Each tray should contain 4 modules of total active area 0.7 sq m, with a thermal blanket, thermal labyrinth mounts, aluminum honeycomb mechanical support, and total weight approximately 100 kg. Each module should contain interleaved CR39, Lexan, and thin copper sheets plus one event-thermometer canned in a thin metal cannister sealed with approximately 0.2 atm dry O2. The CR39 and Lexan should be manufactured to specifications and the sheet copper rolled to specifications. The event-thermometer should be a stiffened CR39 sheet that slides via bimetal strips relative to fixed CR39 sheet so that stack temperature can be read out for each event. The metal cannister can be collapsed at launch and landing, capturing the sliding assembly to prevent damage. An engineering study should be made of a prototype LDEF tray; this will include thermal and mechanical tests of detectors and the event thermometer.

The Phoretic Motion Experiment (PME) definition phase

The aerosol generator and the charge flow devices (CFD) chamber which were designed for zero-gravity operation was analyzed. Characteristics of the CFD chamber and aerosol generator which would be useful for cloud physics experimentation in a one-g as well as a zero-g environment are documented. The Collision type of aerosol generator is addressed. Relationships among the various input and output parameters are derived and subsequently used to determine the requirements on the controls of the input parameters to assure a given error budget of an output parameter. The CFD chamber operation in a zero-g environment is assessed utilizing a computer simulation program. Low nuclei critical supersaturation and high experiment accuracies are emphasized which lead to droplet growth times extending into hundreds of seconds. The analysis was extended to assess the performance constraints of the CFD chamber in a one-g environment operating in the horizontal mode.

Concept definition and aerodynamic technology studies for single-engine V/STOL fighter/attack aircraft

The results obtained in the early stages of a research program to develop aerodynamic technology for single-engine V/STOL fighter/attack aircraft projected for the post-1990 period are summarized. This program includes industry studies jointly sponsored by NASA and the Navy. Four contractors have identified promising concepts featuring a variety of approaches for providing propulsive lift. Vertical takeoff gross weights range from about 10,000 to 13,600 kg (22,000 to 30,000 lb). The aircraft have supersonic capability, are highly maneuverable, and have significant short takeoff overload capability. The contractors have estimated the aerodynamics and identified aerodynamic uncertainties associated with their concepts. Wind-tunnel research programs will be formulated to investigate these uncertainties. A description of the concepts is emphasized.

System albedo as sensed by satellites - Its definition and variability

System albedo, an important climatological and environmental parameter, is considered. Some of the problems and assumptions involved in evaluating albedo from satellite data are discussed. Clear-sky and cloud albedos over the United Kingdom and parts of northwest Europe are treated. Consideration is given to the spectral, temporal, and spatial variations and the effect of averaging. The implications of these results for those using and archiving albedo values and for future monitoring of system albedo are discussed. Normalization is of especial importance since this correction alters many albedo values. The pronounced difference in spectral albedo of the two visible channels reemphasizes the problem of attempting to calculate integrated albedo values from meteorological satellite data. The assumption of isotropic reflection is seen to be invalid, hindering the computation of accurate albedo values.

Classification of simulated and actual NOAA-6 AVHRR data for hydrologic land-surface feature definition

An examination of the possibilities of using Landsat data to simulate NOAA-6 Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) data on two channels, as well as using actual NOAA-6 imagery, for large-scale hydrological studies is presented. A running average was obtained of 18 consecutive pixels of 1 km resolution taken by the Landsat scanners were scaled up to 8-bit data and investigated for different gray levels. AVHRR data comprising five channels of 10-bit, band-interleaved information covering 10 deg latitude were analyzed and a suitable pixel grid was chosen for comparison with the Landsat data in a supervised classification format, an unsupervised mode, and with ground truth. Landcover delineation was explored by removing snow, water, and cloud features from the cluster analysis, and resulted in less than 10% difference. Low resolution large-scale data was determined useful for characterizing some landcover features if weekly and/or monthly updates are maintained.

A definition of the degree of disturbance rejection

The problem of rejecting disturbances that are known a priori to reside in a particular function class is treated. Two scalar measures, the degree of disturbance rejection (DODR) and the degree of disturbability (DOD) are defined and shown to be useful in rating a candidate controller's ability to counter the expected disturbances. The measures can thus be used as criteria for controller design and actuator placement. It is shown that the DODR can guarantee that constraints on the control action will not be violated. The DOD assumes a closed-loop controller realization, and this gives a simplified formulation in terms of one state space region instead of two. With the DOD, a variety of performance indices can be considered, together with a spectrum of possible controller implementations.

Materials experiment carrier concepts definition study. Volume 1: Executive summary, part 2

The materials experiment carrier (MEC) is an optimized carrier for near term and advanced materials processing in space (MPS) research and commercial payloads. When coupled with the space platform (SP), the MEC can provide the extended duration, high power and low acceleration environment the MPS payload typically requires. The lowest cost, technically reasonable first step MEC that meets the MPS program missions objectives with minimum programmatic risks is defined. The effectiveness of the initial MEC/space platform idea for accommodating high priority, multidiscipline, R&D and commercial MPS payloads, and conducting MPS payload oprations at affordable funding and acceptable productivity levels is demonstrated.

Materials experiment carrier concepts definition study. Volume 3: Programmatics, part 2

Project logic, schedule and funding information was derived to enable decisions to be made regarding implementation of MEC system development. A master schedule and cost and price estimates (ROM) were developed for a project that consists of development of an all-up MEC, its integration with payloads and its flight on one 90 day mission. In Part 2 of the study a simple initial MEC was defined to accommodate three MPS baseline payloads. The design of this initial MEC is illustrated. The project logic, detailed schedules, and ROM cost estimate relate to a project in which this initial MEC is developed, integrated with payloads and flown once for 180 days.

A class of nonideal solutions. 1: Definition and properties

A class of nonideal solutions is defined by constructing a function to represent the composition dependence of thermodynamic properties for members of the class, and some properties of these solutions are studied. The constructed function has several useful features: (1) its parameters occur linearly; (2) it contains a logarithmic singularity in the dilute solution region and contains ideal solutions and regular solutions as special cases; and (3) it is applicable to N-ary systems and reduces to M-ary systems (M or = N) in a form-invariant manner.

Definition of Forces on Turbomachinery Rotors. Task B Report: Dynamic Analysis of Rotors

The rotordynamic characteristics of turbomachinery are known to depend on the forces developed due to relative motion between the rotor and the housing. For example, the critical speed locations generally depend on the bearing stiffnesses, seal dampling influences rotor stability and bearing reaction amplitudes near critical speeds, etc. A systematic examination of the influence of changes in the forces acting on rotors is studied. More specifically, the sensitivity of the rotordynamic characteristics to changes in rotor forces is analyzed. Rotordynamic characteristics of the HPOTP (High Pressure Oxygen Turbopump) and HPFTP (High Pressure Fuel Turbopump) of the SSME (Space Shuttle Main Engine) are investigated. Because of their markedly different rotordynamic characteristics, these units are considered to be representative of a range of possible future liquid rocket engine turbomachinery.
