Study of design and control of remote manipulators. Part 4: Experiments in video camera positioning with regard to remote manipulation

The results are presented of a study involving closed circuit television as the means of providing the necessary task-to-operator feedback for efficient performance of the remote manipulation system. Experiments were performed to determine the remote video configuration that will result in the best overall system. Two categories of tests were conducted which include: those which involved remote control position (rate) of just the video system, and those in which closed circuit TV was used along with manipulation of the objects themselves.

Asymmetrical booster ascent guidance and control system design study. Volume 2: SSFS math models - Ascent

The engineering equations and mathematical models developed for use in the space shuttle functional simulator (SSFS) are presented, and include extensive revisions and additions to earlier documentation. Definitions of coordinate systems used by the SSFS models and coordinate tranformations are given, along with documentation of the flexible body mathematical models. The models were incorporated in the SSFS and are in the checkout stage.

Asymmetrical booster ascent guidance and control system design study. Volume 5: Space shuttle powered explicit guidance

An optimum powered explicit guidance algorithm capable of handling all space shuttle exoatospheric maneuvers is presented. The theoretical and practical basis for the currently baselined space shuttle powered flight guidance equations and logic is documented. Detailed flow diagrams for implementing the steering computations for all shuttle phases, including powered return to launch site (RTLS) abort, are also presented. Derivation of the powered RTLS algorithm is provided, as well as detailed flow diagrams for implementing the option. The flow diagrams and equations are compatible with the current powered flight documentation.

Control system designs for the shuttle infrared telescope facility

The Shuttle Infrared Telescope Facility (SIRTF) image motion compensation system is described in detail and performance is analyzed with respect to system noise inputs, environmental disturbances, and error sources such as bending and feedforward scale factor. It is concluded that the SIRTF accuracy and stability requirements can be met with this design.

Modular design attitude control system

A hybrid multilevel linear quadratic regulator (ML-LQR) approach was developed and applied to the attitude control of models of the rotational dynamics of a prototype flexible spacecraft and of a typical space platform. Three axis rigid body flexible suspension models were developed for both the spacecraft and the space platform utilizing augmented body methods. Models of the spacecraft with hybrid ML-LQR attitude control and with LQR attitude control were simulated and their response with the two different types of control were compared.

A modern control approach to the design of the SPS control system

The structural dynamics of the solar power satellite were considered. The requirements on the vibration of the microwave antenna and the possibility of thermal induced vibration and severe structural-thermal interactions were considered. The possibility of using an active control system and modern control methods to mitigate structural problems is discussed.

Modular design attitude control system

Application of modular control techniques to the attitude control of a prototype flexible spacecraft and a prototype flexible space platform was further developed by determining numerical values for the physical parameters of a four body approximation of the MSFC/hybrid deployable truss incorporated in the space platform model, generating sensitivity coefficients for the model of the flexible spacecraft, evaluating the changes in the digital computer simulation of the flexible spacecraft resulting from the addition of another rigid body to the model and comparing attitude control effectiveness with actuators on more than one rigid body of the model with that for the case in which the actuators were restricted to one body.

Modular design attitude control system

The problem of applying modular attitude control to a rigid body-flexible suspension model of a flexible spacecraft with some state variables inaccessible was addressed by developing a sequence of single axis models and generating a series of reduced state linear observers of minimum order to reconstruct those scalar state variables that were inaccessible. The specific single axis models treated consisted of two, three and four rigid bodies, respectively, interconnected by a flexible shaft passing through the mass centers of the bodies. Reduced state linear observers of all orders up to one less than the total number of scalar state variables were generated for each of the three single axis models cited.

Exhibit D modular design attitude control system study

A dynamically equivalent four body approximation of the NASTRAN finite element model supplied for hybrid deployable truss to support the digital computer simulation of the ten body model of the flexible space platform that incorporates the four body truss model were investigated. Coefficients for sensitivity of state variables of the linearized model of the three axes rotational dynamics of the prototype flexible spacecraft were generated with respect to the model's parameters. Software changes required to accommodate addition of another rigid body to the five body model of the rotational dynamics of the prototype flexible spacecraft were evaluated.

Practical guidance for the design of controls and displays for single pilot IFR

This paper represents a first step in developing the criteria for pilot interaction with advanced controls and displays in a single pilot IFR (SPIFR) environment. The research program presented is comprised of an analytical phase and an experimental phase. The analytical phase consisted of a review of fundamental considerations for pilot workload taking into account existing data, and using that data to develop a SPIFR pilot workload model. The rationale behind developing such a model was based on the concept that it is necessary to identify and quantify the most important components of pilot workload to guide the experimental phase of the research which consisted of an abbreviated flight test program. The purpose of the flight tests was to evaluate the workload associated with certain combinations of controls and displays in a flight environment. This was accommplished as a first step in building a data base for single pilot IFR controls and displays.

Modular design attitude control system

A sequence of single axismodels and a series of reduced state linear observers of minimum order are used to reconstruct inaccessible variables pertaining to the modular attitude control of a rigid body flexible suspension model of a flexible spacecraft. The single axis models consist of two, three, four, and five rigid bodies, each interconnected by a flexible shaft passing through the mass centers of the bodies. Modal damping is added to each model. Reduced state linear observers are developed for synthesizing the inaccessible modal state variables for each modal model.

Integrated Technology Rotor/Flight Research Rotor (ITR/FRR) concept definition study

Studies were conducted by Hughes Helicopters, Inc. (HHI) for the Applied Technology Laboratory and Aeromechanics Laboratory, U.S. Army Research and Technology Laboratories (AVRADCOM) and the Ames Research Center, National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). Results of predesign studies of advanced main rotor hubs, including bearingless designs, are presented in this report. In addition, the Government's rotor design goals and specifications were reviewed and evaluated. Hub concepts were designed and qualitatively evaluated in order to select the two most promising concepts for further development. Various flexure designs, control systems, and pitchcase designs were investigated during the initial phases of this study. The two designs selected for additional development were designated the V-strap and flat-strap cruciform hubs. These hubs were designed for a four bladed rotor and were sized for 18,400 pounds gross weight with the same diameter (62 feet) and solidity (23 inch chord) as the existing rotor on the Rotor Systems Research Aircraft (RSRA).
