Electroactive ZnO: Mechanisms, Conductivity, and Advances in Zn Alkaline Battery Cycling

Zinc oxide is of great interest for advanced energy devices because of its low cost, wide direct bandgap, non-toxicity, and facile electrochemistry. In zinc alkaline batteries, ZnO plays a critical role in electrode passivation, a process that hinders commercialization and remains poorly understood. Here, novel observations of an electroactive type of ZnO formed in Zn-metal alkaline electrodes are disclosed. The electrical conductivity of battery-formed ZnO is measured and found to vary by factors of up to 10 4 , which provides a first-principles-based understanding of Zn passivation in industrial alkaline batteries. Simultaneous with this conductivity change, protons are inserted into the crystal structure and electrons are inserted into the conduction band in quantities up to ≈10 20 cm –3 and ≈1 mAh gZnO –1 . Electron insertion causes blue electrochromic coloration with efficiencies and rates competitive with leading electrochromic materials. The electroactivity of ZnO is evidently enabled by rapid crystal growth, which forms defects that complex with inserted cations, charge-balanced by the increase of conduction band electrons. Furthermore, this property distinguishes electroactive ZnO from inactive classical ZnO. Knowledge of this phenomenon is applied to improve cycling performance of industrial-design electrodes at 50% zinc utilization and the authors propose other uses for ZnO such as electrochromic devices.

Complexing Agent-Assisted Membraneless Zinc–Iodine Aqueous Batteries

A membrane is required for conventional zinc–iodine aqueous batteries, since soluble polyiodides cross over to the anode side and react with zinc metal spontaneously. Making the battery membraneless increases ion transport and reduces its cost and overall footprint. In this paper, a membraneless Zn–I 2 aqueous battery is demonstrated, employing a complexing agent, 1-butyl-1-methylpyrrolidinium iodide (MBPI), to promote the formation of I 5 – -containing, phase-separated polyiodides upon charging, to minimize self-discharge and suppress Zn dendrite growth. With an additional 0.3 M MBPI in 4 M ZnI 2 electrolyte, the membraneless battery achieved 65 cycles with >85% Coulombic efficiency, whereas the MBPI-free control failed immediately. Additionally, a volumetric capacity of 14.3 Ah L –1 was achieved, surpassing those of most membraneless batteries reported to date regardless of redox chemistry, and underscores the potential of complexing agents in simplifying the architecture of conventional Zn–I 2 flow batteries.

Production of fast-charge Zn-based aqueous batteries via interfacial adsorption of ion-oligomer complexes

Abstract Aqueous zinc batteries are attracting interest because of their potential for cost-effective and safe electricity storage. However, metallic zinc exhibits only moderate reversibility in aqueous electrolytes. To circumvent this issue, we study aqueous Zn batteries able to form nanometric interphases at the Zn metal/liquid electrolyte interface, composed of an ion-oligomer complex. In Zn||Zn symmetric cell studies, we report highly reversible cycling at high current densities and capacities (e.g., 160 mA cm −2 ; 2.6 mAh cm −2 ). By means of quartz-crystal microbalance, nuclear magnetic resonance, and voltammetry measurements we show that the interphase film exists in a dynamic equilibrium with oligomers dissolved in the electrolyte. The interphase strategy is applied to aqueous Zn||I 2 and Zn||MnO 2 cells that are charged/discharged for 12,000 cycles and 1000 cycles, respectively, at a current density of 160 mA cm −2 and capacity of approximately 0.85 mAh cm −2 . Finally, we demonstrate that Zn||I 2 -carbon pouch cells (9 cm 2 area) cycle stably and deliver a specific energy of 151 Wh/kg (based on the total mass of active materials in the electrode) at a charge current density of 56 mA cm −2 .

Transport Mechanisms of Hydrogen Gas and Ions in Poly(potassium acrylate) Electrolytes

Poly(potassium acrylate) (PAAK) in high concentration KOH solutions is a promising electrolyte for use in alkaline zinc batteries. Atomistic molecular dynamics simulations are used to investigate the transport mechanisms of hydrogen gas and zincate ions through both KOH solutions and PAAK solutions with comparable concentrations of KOH. Hydrogen molecules do not interact with the ions or the polymer, and simply diffuse through the system. Furthermore, their diffusion constant decreases with both increasing KOH concentration and when in the polymer, due to the increased viscosity of the solution. By contrast, zincate ions form long-lived clusters with the PAAK chains which significantly slow their diffusion.
