Yu-Shiba-Rusinov States in a Superconductor with Topological Z 2 Bands

A Yu-Shiba-Rusinov (YSR) state is a localized in-gap state induced by a magnetic impurity in a superconductor. Recent experiments used an STM tip to manipulate the exchange coupling between an Fe adatom and the FeTe 0.55 Se 0.45 superconductor possessing a Z 2 nontrivial band structure with topological surface states. As the tip moves close to the single Fe adatom, the energy of the in-gap state modulates and exhibits a zero-energy crossing followed by an unusual return to zero energy, which cannot be understood by coupling the magnetic impurity to the superconducting topological surface Dirac cone. Here, we numerically and analytically study the YSR states in superconductors with nontrivial Z 2 bands and show the emergence of the two zero-energy crossings as a function of the exchange coupling between the magnetic impurity and the bulk states. We analyze the role of the topological surface states and compare in-gap states to systems with trivial Z 2 bands. The spin polarization of the YSR states is further studied for future experimental measurement.

Topological Mott transition in a two band model of spinless fermions with on-site Coulomb repulsion

Highlights: • The effect of the on-site Coulomb repulsion and the spin–orbit Rashba coupling lead to the 2D topological semimetal. • The ground state phase diagram is calculated. • The topological semimetal phase is characterized by the zero energy Majorana states. In the framework of mean field approach, we study topological Mott transition in a two band model of spinless fermions on a square lattice at half filling. We consider the combined effect of the on-site Coulomb repulsion and the spin–orbit Rashba coupling. The ground state phase diagram is calculated as a function of the strength of the spin–orbit Rashba coupling and the Coulomb repulsion. The spin–orbit Rashba coupling leads to a distinct phase of matter, the topological semimetal. We study a new type of phase transition between the non-topological insulator and topological semimetal states. Topological phase state is characterized by the zero energy Majorana states, which there are in defined region of the wave vectors and are localized at the boundaries of the sample. The region of existence of the zero energy Majorana states tends to zero at the point of the Mott phase transition. The zero energy Majorana states are dispersionless (they can be considered as flat bands), the Chern number and Hall conductance are equal to zero (note in two dimensional model).

On the contribution of intramolecular zero point energy to the equation of state of solid H2

Experimental evidence shows that the internal zero-point energy of the H2 molecule exhibits a relatively strong pressure dependence in the solid as well as changing considerably upon condensation. It is shown that these effects contribute about 6% to the total sublimation energy and to the pressure in the solid state. Methods to modify the ab initio isolated pair potential to account for these environmental effects are discussed.

WKB Estimate of Bilayer Graphene’s Magic Twist Angles

We report that graphene bilayers exhibit zero-energy flatbands at a discrete series of magic twist angles. In the absence of intrasublattice interlayer hopping, zero-energy states satisfy a Dirac equation with a non-Abelian SU(2) gauge potential that cannot be diagonalized globally. We develop a semiclassical WKB approximation scheme for this Dirac equation by introducing a dimensionless Planck’s constant proportional to the twist angle, solving the linearized Dirac equation around AB and BA turning points, and connecting Airy function solutions via bulk WKB wave functions. We find zero-energy solutions at a discrete set of values of the dimensionless Planck’s constant, which we obtain analytically. Our analytic flatband twist angles correspond closely to those determined numerically in previous work.

Topologically distinct Weyl fermion pairs

Abstract A Weyl semimetal has Weyl nodes that always come in pairs with opposite chiralities. Notably, different ways of connection between nodes are possible and would lead to distinct topologies. Here we identify their differences in many respects from two proposed models with different vorticities. One prominent feature is the behaviour of zeroth Landau levels (LLs) under magnetic field. We demonstrate that the magnetic tunneling does not always expel LLs from zero energy because the number of zero-energy modes is protected by the vorticity of the Weyl nodes, instead of the chirality. Other respects in disorder effects for weak (anti-)localization, surface Fermi arcs, and Weyl-node annihilation, are interesting consequences that await more investigation in the future.

Accelerating the Adoption of Energy Efficiency and Renewables in Warehouses and Distribution Centers

Commercial warehouses and storage facilities represent a large part of the commercial buildings in the United States, and their share increases every year. NREL is working with the U.S. Department of Energy to understand barriers, sector needs, and opportunities to enhance sustainability in the warehouse sector, driving ultra-high efficient, zero-energy design, while considering electrification in buildings and vehicles, grid-friendly operation, and decarbonization. After investigating literature about warehouse sustainability practices and high-performance warehouse case studies, several one-on-one interviews were carried out with warehouse managers and stakeholders. Data collected through literature and the interviews were captured to provide the current status of warehousing in the context of energy efficiency, renewables, carbon emissions, and overall sustainability. The results are intended to inform areas for new research and deployment activities to achieving zero energy and zero carbon goals.

The Energy in Modular (EMOD) Buildings Method: A Guide to Energy-Efficient Design for Industrialized Construction of Modular Buildings

Industrialized construction has immense potential to address the growing need globally to build and upgrade the building stock to be affordable, energy-efficient, and resilient. It can also help achieve the United States' goal of a 50% reduction in U.S. greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2030. Despite this potential, and the ever-increasing push for electrification and decarbonization of households in the United States, industrialized construction has not yet been leveraged specifically to help address these challenges and accelerate the pathway to meet these goals. The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) aims to claim this missed opportunity by focusing on delivering affordable, grid-efficient net-zero energy (NZE) modular buildings for underserved communities to ensure an equitable transition to the future of clean energy, accelerate decarbonization of the built environment, and support the development of a high-productivity construction and energy efficiency workforce. The Energy in Modular (EMOD) method is our approach to designing, producing, and delivering affordable, net-zero energy, low-carbon, and healthier buildings at scale. The following energy efficiency strategies are part of the scope of this guide: envelope thermal control, envelope infiltration control, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems, smart controls, and solar plus storage. We draw synergies between design for manufacturing and assembly, process optimization, retrofit technologies, and digitization. Our goal is to influence the improvement and production of buildings to increase performance, enhance energy efficiency, and reduce GHG emissions. This guide documents the research and development efforts initiated by a set of design objectives to "modularize" a set of energy efficiency and low-carbon strategies into a housing unit while preserving and enhancing energy efficiency benefits and decarbonization pathways. This guide is intended to serve as a framework for housing developers, housing agencies, architects, energy experts, and process engineers or factory operator personnel who are critical to today's modular builder teams. This guide focuses on specific energy efficiency strategies, decarbonization pathways, and associated processes as part of NREL's research efforts. Stakeholders may substitute other means, methods, and technologies for the ones evaluated in this study.

AI-Based Optimal Design and Controls Can Greatly Reduce Carbon Emissions and Enhance Resilience in Residential Communities in Cold Climates

Net-zero energy residential communities are crucial for achieving decarbonization goals, but the high-penetration photovoltaic (PV) in those communities is posing challenges to the distribution grid. Traditional design and operation of net-zero communities rely on rule-of-thumb methods and may not work in complex scenarios. Artificial intelligence and machine learning methods can optimally size PV for net-zero energy, identify user preferences and usage patterns, and fully unlock the potential of distributed energy resources to address distribution grid issues.

The role of above-code labeling programs in reducing CO 2 e emissions in residential buildings

Residential buildings account for 15 % of total U.S. carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) emissions. Voluntary, above-code labeling programs, such as the ENERGY STAR and Zero Energy Ready Home programs, can play a crucial role in reducing the carbon footprint of the new construction residential building sector by encouraging adoption of more energy-efficient and lower emissions building practices and technologies. It's important for the industry to understand the carbon dioxide equivalent (CO 2 e) and energy cost savings potential of these programs. Here, to estimate the potential CO 2 e emissions savings for homes built to above-code labeling program levels, it is imperative to have reliable and accurate tools for estimating emissions from buildings. The open-source OpenStudio-ERI workflow employs detailed physics-based building energy modeling (BEM) to estimate energy usage and operational CO 2 e emissions. In this study we use the OpenStudio-ERI workflow and regional, time-varying emissions factors from the Cambium database to compare the CO 2 e emissions and energy costs of homes built to performance levels required by these above-code labeling programs relative to homes built to model energy codes. We present the results of our analysis and provide a range of emissions and annual energy cost savings for the above-code labeling programs.

Transforming New Multifamily Construction to Zero: Strategies for Implementing Energy Targets and Design Pathways: Preprint

Creating zero energy (ZE) mid- to high-rise multifamily buildings represent significant challenges in the design world. Tenants often take responsibility for some of the utilities and are responsible for consumption of some of the largest end uses: hot water and plug loads. Furthermore, designers can experience risk in creating new sets of details and recommending new strategies to reach aggressive EUI targets. To assist in a more streamlined and successful design approach to ZE multifamily buildings, five major professional societies and experts from the multifamily space created a Zero Energy Advanced Energy Design Guide (AEDG) for multifamily buildings based on data driven results coupled with actual design experiences and case studies. Pathways to achieve ZE design were established including whole building energy use intensity targets coupled with details on how to achieve success in implementing individual efficiency measures. The guidance strives to overcome design barriers and this paper provides an overview of the recommended process to achieve ZE or ZE-ready status, along with details on selecting energy targets, and strategy pathways to achieve the targets.

Low energy electron magnetometer using a monoenergetic electron beam

A low energy electron beam magnetometer utilizes near-monoenergetic electrons thereby reducing errors due to electron energy spread and electron nonuniform angular distribution. In a first embodiment, atoms in an atomic beam of an inert gas are excited to a Rydberg state and then electrons of near zero energy are detached from the Rydberg atoms. The near zero energy electrons are then accelerated by an electric field V(acc) to form the electron beam. In a second embodiment, a filament emits electrons into an electrostatic analyzer which selects electrons at a predetermined energy level within a very narrow range. These selected electrons make up the electron beam that is subjected to the magnetic field being measured.

Robust topological state against magnetic impurities observed in the superconductor PbTaSe 2

Magnetic impurities deposited on topological superconductor candidate PbTaSe 2 can introduce a nonsplitting zero-energy state inside the superconducting gap, which has been proposed as a field-free platform for topological zero modes. However, it is still unclear how robust the topological state in PbTaSe 2 is against magnetic impurities, which is related to the topological nature of the zero-energy state as well as its potential for quantum computation. In this paper, we use scanning tunneling microscopy to study the topological surface state in the normal state of PbTaSe 2 under the perturbation of magnetic impurities. We visualize the quasiparticle interference (QPI) arising from the topological surface state. We then deposit Fe impurities on the surface to form atomic Fe adatoms. We find that each Fe adatom sits at a unique interstitial position on the surface and features a local state at high energies, both of which are consistent with our first-principles calculation that further reveals its large magnetic moment. Our systematic Fe deposition and subsequent measurements show that the arclike QPI pattern at the Fermi energy is robust with up to 3% Fe coverage where the atomic nature of Fe adatoms still holds. Our results provide evidence that the topological surface state at the Fermi energy in PbTaSe 2 is robust against dilute magnetic impurities.

Negative-ion formation in the explosives RDX, PETN, and TNT by using the reversal electron attachment detection technique

First results of a beam-beam, single-collision study of negative-ion mass spectra produced by attachment of zero-energy electrons to the molecules of the explosives RDX, PETN, and TNT are presented. The technique used is reversal electron attachment detection (READ) wherein the zero-energy electrons are produced by focusing an intense electron beam into a shaped electrostatic field which reverses the trajectory of electrons. The target beam is introduced at the reversal point, and attachment occurs because the electrons have essentially zero longitudinal and radial velocity. The READ technique is used to obtain the 'signature' of molecular ion formation and/or fragmentation for each explosive. Present data are compared with results from atmospheric-pressure ionization and negative-ion chemical ionization methods.

Microscopic origin of ultranodal superconducting states in spin- 1 2 systems

Several unconventional superconductors show indications of zero-energy excitations in the superconducting state consistent with the existence of a so-called Bogoliubov-Fermi surface (BFS). In particular, FeSe isovalently substituted with S seems to acquire a nonzero density of states at zero energy at low temperatures as the system goes into the tetragonal phase, consistent with a previously proposed phenomenological theory assuming an anisotropic spin singlet pairing gap coexisting with a nonunitary interband triplet component. Here we search for a microscopic model that can support the coexistence of singlet pairing with other orders, including interband nonunitary triplet pairing with magnetization, and discuss several candidates that indeed stabilize ground states with BFS. We show that with proper choice of the coupling strength of the various orders in our model, spontaneous breaking of C 4 rotational symmetry is realized at low temperatures. This feature resembles the findings of recent angle-resolved photoemission experiments in Fe(Se,S) in the tetragonal phase.
