Ensuring reliable connectivity to cellular-connected UAVs with up-tilted antennas and interference coordination

To integrate unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) in future large-scale deployments, a new wireless communication paradigm, namely, the cellular-connected UAV has recently attracted interest. However, the line-of-sight dominant air-to-ground channels along with the antenna pattern of the cellular ground base stations (GBSs) introduce critical interference issues in cellular-connected UAV communications. In particular, the complex antenna pattern and the ground reflection (GR) from the down-tilted antennas create both coverage holes and patchy coverage for the UAVs in the sky, which leads to unreliable connectivity from the underlying cellular network. To overcome these challenges, in this paper, we propose a new cellular architecture that employs an extra set of co-channel antennas oriented towards the sky to support UAVs on top of the existing down-tilted antennas for ground user equipment (GUE). To model the GR stemming from the down-tilted antennas, we propose a path-loss model, which takes both antenna radiation pattern and configuration into account. Next, we formulate an optimization problem to maximize the minimum signal-to-interference ratio (SIR) of the UAVs by tuning the up-tilt (UT) angles of the up-tilted antennas. Since this is an NP-hard problem, we propose a genetic algorithm (GA) based heuristic method to optimize the UT angles of these antennas. After obtaining the optimal UT angles, we integrate the 3GPP Release-10 specified enhanced inter-cell interference coordination (eICIC) to reduce the interference stemming from the down-tilted antennas. Our simulation results based on the hexagonal cell layout show that the proposed interference mitigation method can ensure higher minimum SIRs for the UAVs over baseline methods while creating minimal impact on the SIR of GUEs.

Optical encoder devices and systems

Devices, systems and methods for encoding information using optical components are described. Information associated with a first optical signal (e.g., an optical pump) is encoded onto the phase of a second optical signal (e.g., an optical probe) using cross phase modulation (XPM) in a non-linear optical medium. The optical signals are multiplexed together into the nonlinear optical medium. The probe experiences a modified index of refraction as it propagates through the medium and thus accumulates a phase change proportional to the intensity of the pump. The disclosed devices can be incorporated into larger components and systems for various applications such as scientific diagnostics, radar, remote sensing, wireless communications, and quantum computing that can benefit from encoding and generation of low noise, high resolution signals. Examples of the encoded information includes intrinsic noise from the optical source, or others signals of interest, such as electrical, optical, X-ray, or high-energy particle signals.

One-way transfer device with secure reverse channel

A data diode provides a flexible device for collecting data from a data source and transmitting the data to a data destination using one-way data transmission across a main channel. On-board processing elements allow the data diode to identify automatically the type of connectivity provided to the data diode and configure the data diode to handle the identified type of connectivity. Either or both of the inbound and outbound side of the data diode may comprise one or both of wired and wireless communication interfaces. A secure reverse channel, separate from the main channel, allows carefully predetermined communications from the data destination to the data source.

Sampling synchronization through GPS signals

A method uses a distributed data acquisition system with multiple, physically unconnected, data acquisition units, that can be in wireless communication with a remote host, to timestamp measurement data with sub-microsecond time base accuracy of sampling clock relative to an absolute timeframe. A current absolute time is derived from messages received from a satellite radio beacon positioning system (GPS). Measurement data is sampled by each unit at a specified sampling rate. Using hardware logic, batches of sampled data are associated with corresponding timestamps representing the absolute time at which the data was sampled. Data and timestamps may be transmitted to the host. A time offset bias is compensated by comparing timestamps against a nominal time based on start time and nominal sampling rate. The sampling clock rate may be disciplined using time pulses from the GPS receiver. An initial start of data sampling by all units can also be synchronized.

A Bayesian Learning Approach to Wireless Outdoor Heatmap Construction using Deep Gaussian Process

We present a novel Bayesian learning approach to outdoor radio heatmap construction utilizing deep Gaussian process (GP). The proposed approach employs a two-layer hierarchy which consists of two cascaded Gaussian processes that are capable of modeling more complex input-output relations than standard single-layer Gaussian processes. Since deriving the exact model likelihood is challenging, a lower bound is optimized instead so that gradient descent-based methods can be performed to find out the optimal model parameters. Typically, inducing points are used in GPs to facilitate low-rank approximation of covariance (kernel) matrices for computation speedup. However, the inaccuracy induced by inducing points can accumulate when stacking multiple layers of GP which may hinder the performance of deep GP. Moreover, since inducing points need to be learned, having them at all layers of deep GP also incurs computational burden. To overcome the above challenges, in contrast to the canonical deep GP model, we use a modified architecture where a full standard GP resides in the first layer and inducing points are only introduced for the second layer. This modified architecture strikes a balance between model accuracy and training complexity. In the proposed model, the noise parameter of the first GP layer is also eliminated to improve the training efficiency as the noise parameter at the output of the second layer suffices to model the uncertainty in the output. The proposed approach is evaluated on real-world datasets, in the form of location-Received Signal Strength (RSS) pairs, collected from the Platform for Open Wireless Data-driven Experimental Research (POWDER) located at the campus of the University of Utah. Experiment results show that the proposed approach can achieve smaller prediction errors on various training and testing data configurations than DNN-based and GP-based methods.

Wireless Sensing and Communication Capability from In-Core to a Monitoring Center

Significant cost savings can be made if electrical cables can be replaced by wireless technology in current Nuclear Power Plants (NPP) and in advance reactor designs. Wireless technology can also provide in-core opportunities by significantly reducing the number of penetrations in the pressure vessel, cost and complexity of sensor installation and by increasing the efficiency of current and advanced reactors. Unlike other deployment scenarios for an industrial environment, operators need to have centralized control over all the networks. Centralized control will reduce implementation costs, provide single point control and enable monitoring of network devices, improve security, and enhance connectivity. Micro-sensors that can simultaneously monitor temperature and pressure within a fuel rod inside nuclear reactors will enable preventative actions during abnormal operating conditions. This ability could avert accidents and enable the expedient development of accident tolerant fuels. A novel micro-sensor suite (~ mm) to simultaneously measure multiple parameters such as temperature, strain, pressure, and neutron/gamma flux inside a fuel rod is being developed for use in reactors. The necessary communication architecture is also being developed to transmit measurement signals from the core to the plant's data cloud or control room. A three three-tier strategy has been developed to support wireless transmission of in-core measurements to the control room or to a secure cloud platform for control, analytics, and decision-making purposes. 1. In-core: data signal from in-core to outside of the pressure vessel within the containment building 2. Containment building: data signal from inside to the outside of the containment building and into the balance of the plant network 3. Balance of the plant network: information transmitted to the data cloud and control room This plan presents a wireless sensing and communication system for use within a reactor core and elsewhere. The communication technology is advantageous to compensate for network equipment failures and adverse data transmission conditions. Wireless technology will significantly increase the resiliency of the plants network system. The wireless system naturally provides multiple transmission path capability and data redundancy.

Examining the Performance of MIL-STD-188-110D Waveform 0 Against FBMC-SS Over Skywave HF Channels

This paper provides a comprehensive performance comparison between a current robust military waveform; namely, MIL-STD-188-110D, Waveform 0, and a filter bank multicarrier spread-spectrum (FBMC-SS) waveform proposed for communications through ionospheric/skywave HF channels. Waveform 0 is effectively a direct sequence spread spectrum waveform that uses Walsh multi-codes to enhance the information transmission rate. It may thus be referred to as Walsh-DSSS. FBMC-SS, on the other hand, makes use of filter banks to provide excellent performance when the received signal is subject to partial band interference. Successful application of FBMC-SS for communications across skywave HF channels has been previously demonstrated, both theoretically and through experimental work. However, very little has been done to contrast FBMC-SS against Walsh-DSSS. The goal of this paper is to first add new features to FBMC-SS to bring it on par with Walsh-DSSS. These features include: (i), introduction of multi-codes that achieve a comparable (or better) data rate to Walsh-DSSS; and (ii), addition of a scrambling step applied to the multi-codes to make the receiver detection robust against widely spread multipaths. With this established, in the second part of the paper, we examine the performance of the developed FBMC-SS against Walsh-DSSS when both are applied for communications across skywave HF channels. The two waveforms are compared both through a theoretical study and through experimental works across several skywave channels ranging from hundreds to thousands of kilometers.

A Method of Estimating Sparse and Doubly-Dispersive Channels

The large delay and Doppler spreads of skywave high-frequency (HF) channels complicates channel acquisition, especially in low-SNR conditions. Using pilot-symbol assisted modulation, we develop a robust method to acquire channel information by first estimating the power-delay profile (PDP) of the channel, then applying that estimate to obtain the channel coefficients only where the PDP is nonzero. We find the presented approach to be robust at low-SNRs, making it suitable for spread-spectrum and underlay waveforms. We show that this two-stage channel acquisition procedure has three advantages: i),the channel is estimated with fewer terms, reducing complexity; ii), the MSE of the channel estimate is lower than assuming a fixed channel length; and iii), each propagation mode is reliably recovered in high-Doppler conditions. We conclude this paper by presenting results of the developed techniques as applied to a filter-bank multicarrier spread-spectrum (FBMC-SS) waveform.

CP-DSSS: A Novel Waveform for Multiple Access in IoT

Cyclic prefix direct sequence spread spectrum (CPDSSS) is a novel waveform with versatile characteristics that positions itself well as a secondary network to relieve the congested wireless spectrum. The underlying structure of CPDSSS allows for efficient and effective multi-access capabilites through frequency and time division schemes in a given system. The sum-rate capacity of the system is maximized when the spectrum is divided and allocated to users with the best signal-to-noise (SNR) ratio for the given channel slice. We propose an algorithm for dividing and allocating portions of the spectrum to multiple users with the final goal of maximizing the sumrate capacity of the network. We also propose and develop a precoding/equalization technique that reduces the length of the channel impulse response. This, when used along with a matched filter detector, leads to some improvement in the sum-rate capacity of the network

Frequency Domain Multi-user Processing for Single Carrier Modulation with Cyclic Prefix

Frequency domain (FD) detection and precoding have been shown to be effective means of approaching the theoretical per-user capacity for single carrier modulation SCM) schemes. When a cyclic prefix is added to the SCM waveform, the circulant structures of the resulting convolutional channel matrix allows for relatively simple expressions for the FD processing, and achieves performance near the theoretical capacity even for high signal to noise ratio values. This paper details the signal processing for uplink and downlink multi-user operation with a multi-antenna base station.
