Cryogenic Quartz Crystal Microbalance

A radiatively cooled Cryogenic Quartz Crystal Microbalance designed to monitor highly volatile contaminants on the shuttle is described. Measurements are made with two 15-MHz microbalances having removable, optically polished sensors mounted in a radiant cooler. One sensor operates below the freezing point of water and monitors contamination including that of water vapor. The second sensor is heated and monitors the contamination background. It provides a reference from which the density of the water vapor cloud enveloping the shuttle is determined. The design incorporates a low-power dissipation oscillator, heaters for ice removal, and a method for attaching second-surface mirrors to the radiator employing an indium type solder instead of a room temperature vulcanizer.

Open cell fire-resistant foam

Candidate polyphosphazene polymers were investigated to develop a fire-resistant, thermally stable and flexible open cell foam. The copolymers were prepared in several mole ratios of the substituent side chains and a (nominal) 40:60 derivative was selected for formulation studies. Synthesis of the polymers involved solution by polymerization of hexachlorophosphazene to soluble high molecular weight poly(dichlorophosphazene), followed by derivatization of the resultant polymer in a normal fashion to give polymers in high yield and high molecular weight. Small amounts of a cure site were incorporated into the polymer for vulcanization purposes. The poly(aryloxyphosphazenes) exhibited good thermal stability and the first polymer mentioned above exhibited the best thermal behavior of all the candidate polymers studied.

The simultaneous determination of 20 trace elements in terrestrial, lunar and meteoritic material by radiochemical neutron activation analysis

A radiochemical neutron activation method has been developed and applied to determine the content of 20 trace elements (Ag, Au, Bi, Br, Cd, Co, Cs, Cu, Ga, Ge, In, Ir, Ni, Rb, Re, Sb, Te, Tl, and Zn) in 45 terrestrial, 230 lunar, and 70 meteoritic samples. Results obtained for the U.S.G.S. standard basalt BCR-1 indicate that the inherent precision for most elements is 10% or better. The values obtained for the trace elements investigated are compared to those previously reported in the literature. Data for Type I carbonaceous chondrites show their compositions to be far more uniform than previously supposed. The values obtained for several elements represent significant revisions in the accepted cosmic abundances. These new values include: Zn, 1250; Cd, 1.51; and Ir, 0.72 atoms/million Si atoms. Further results have provided insight into the meteoritic material and accretion of the moon, and give evidence of lunar highland vulcanism.

Potting procedure for electronic components

Potting process is modified to effect a match more closely between embedded electronic components, potting mediums, and thermal environment. Application of room-temperature vulcanizing silicone rubber band cured in modified thermal cycle minimizes coil-to-resin adhesion and thus lowers stresses between transformer and potting compound.

Ion-beam analysis of meteoritic and lunar samples

Charged particle-induced nuclear reactions were used in the following problems: the determination of elemental abundances of boron and fluorine in carbonaceous chondritic meteorites; the identification of products of lunar vulcanism; and the study of solar wind-implanted atoms in lunar materials. The technique was seen as an important supplement to other methods of elemental and isotopic analysis. This was especially true for cases involving light elements at very low concentrations or where high resolution depth distribution information was needed in non-destructive analysis.

Galileo - Mission to Jupiter

The Galileo mission to Jupiter in the latter half of this decade is NASA's next step in the exploration of Jupiter. The primary science objectives are to study the satellites, the magnetosphere, and Jupiter's atmosphere. In general, there are four characteristics of the Galileo mission which provide the capability to address questions not answered by Voyager: (1) long-term observations - at least 11 orbits of Jupiter in nearly two years - will allow temporal studies of Io vulcanism as well as of interactions between the satellites and magnetosphere; (2) very close satellite flybys - at a distance less than 1000 km at each Galilean satellite - will allow in-depth studies of these satellites at distances 20 to 100 times closer than Voyager achieved; (3) an atmospheric entry probe will measure composition, structure, temperature, energy balance, cloud layer locations and structure, and particle size distribution in Jupiter's atmosphere; and (4) the Orbiter's advanced instrumentation will allow higher resolution and more detailed studies of the satellites, atmosphere, and magnetosphere

Heat and Pressure Seal for Doors

Proposed tubular gasket for doors performs dual function: seals in pressure, and seals out heat. Composed of quartz fabric filled with alumina matting, gasket is bonded with room-temperature-vulcanizing material to periphery of door. When door is closed, gasket is compressed like O-ring: fills gap between door and frame; and prevents leakage of air and heat.

Microscopy and microstructure of Shuttle thermal protection system materials

Examples of the contribution of microstructural analysis to the development of the Space Shuttle tile insulation system are presented, with photographic examples of the scanning electron microscope (SEM) investigations. After the basic thermal protection system materials had been selected, it was neccessary to analyze the mechanical responses of the combined materials; which included: (1) the polymer strain isolation pad (SIP), (2) the room temperature-vulcanizing silicone rubber bond, (RTV), and (3) rigid ceramic fiber reusable surface insulation (RSI). Microstructural analysis was used to provide information on deformation and fracture mechanisms, load transfer mechanisms, and structural alterations occurring before final failure. Both quantitative and qualitative information was obtained in the open, three-dimensional fibrous structures of the ceramic tiles by means of novel techniques of encapsulation and dissolution.

Beginning and end of lunar mare volcanism

The distribution and characteristics of the early phases of mare vulcanism on the moon are discussed. Breccias have been observed that indicate the presence of magma flows before 3900 Myr BP. A mafic feature has been identified in more than 100 craters at least 1 km across. The absence of buried mare surfaces on the nearside and western hemispheres is attributed to ejecta deposits, and farside basins with no mare fill are suggested to have experienced early mare flooding. Photographs of the bright-rayed Lichtenberg crater have revealed that mare volcanism occurred within the time frame 1700-2000 Myr BP. It is concluded that the moon featured two periods of igneous activity, the last happening at 1000 Myr BP, and beginning 4300 BP.

Field repair of AH-16 helicopter window cutting assemblies

The U.S. Army uses explosively actuated window cutting assemblies to provide emergency crew ground egress. Gaps between the system's explosive cords and acrylic windows caused a concern about functional reliability for a fleet of several hundred aircraft. A field repair method, using room temperature vulcanizing silicone compound (RTV), was developed and demonstrated to fill gaps as large as 0.250 inch.

Formulation/cure technology for ultrahigh molecular weight silphenylene-siloxane polymers

Molecular weights above one million were achieved for methylvinylsilphenylene-siloxane terpolymers using a two-stage polymerization technique which was successfully scaled up to 200 grams. The resulting polymer was vulcanized by two different formulations and compared to an identically formulated commercial methylvinyl silicone on the basis of ultimate strength, Young's modulus, percent elongation at failure, and tear strength. Relative thermal/oxidative stabilities of the elastomers were assessed by gradient and isothermal thermogravimetric analyses performed in both air and nitrogen. The experimental elastomer exhibited enhanced thermal/oxidative stability and possed equivalent or superior mechanical properties. The effect of variations in prepolymer molecular weight on mechanical properties was also investigated.

Encapsulant selection and durability testing experience

The Flat Plate Solar Array Project (FSA) has established technically challenging cost and service life goals for photovoltaic modules. These goals are a cost of $70 sq m and an expected 30 years of service life in an outdoor weathering environment. out of the cost goal, $14 sq m is allocated for encapsulation materials, which includes the cost of a structural panel. At FSA's inception in 1975, the cumulative cost of encapsulation materials in popular use, such as room temperature vulcanized (RTV) silicones, aluminum panels, etc., greatly exceeded $14/sq m. Accordingly, it became necessary to identify and/or develop new materials and new material technologies to achieve the goals. Many of these new materials are low cost polymers that satisfy module engineering and encapsulation processing requirements but unfortunately are not intrinsically weather stable. This necessitates identifying lifetime and/or weathering deficiencies inherent in these low cost materials and developing specific approaches to enhancing weather stability.
