Circular quantum dots in twisted bilayer graphene

Within a tight-binding approach, we investigate the effect of twisting angle on the energy levels of circular bilayer graphene (BLG) quantum dots (QDs) in both the absence and presence of a perpendicular magnetic field. The QDs are defined by an infinite-mass potential, so that the specific edge effects are not present. In the absence of magnetic field (or when the magnetic length is larger than the moiré length), we show that the low-energy states in twisted BLG QDs are completely affected by the formation of moiré patterns, with a strong localization at AA-stacked regions. When magnetic field increases, the energy gap of an untwisted BLG QD closes with the edge states, localized at the boundaries between the AA- and AB-stacked spots in a twisted BLG QD. In this work, our observation of the spatial localization of the electrons in twisted BLG QDs can be experimentally probed by low-bias scanning tunneling microscopy measurements.

Using irradiation-induced defects as pinning sites to minimize self-alignment in twisted bilayer graphene

Preparing bi-layer graphene under a magic twisting angle of ~1.1° has been challenging due to its strong tendency for self-alignment. We propose a method to pin graphene layers and minimize their self-rotation when positioned close to each other. The feasibility is demonstrated by the present study using molecular dynamics simulations. C 60 clusters are used to bombard two individual graphene layers, creating damage on both layers. When two irradiated layers are moving closer to each other, defects from irradiation damaged zones can interact with each other, hence acting as pinning sites to immobilize graphene and minimize rotation or gliding. Dangling bonds from defective regions of each plane induce the formation of sp bonds. Upon sliding, the bond is strong enough to induce the formation of one-dimensional carbon single chain, acting as a thread to constrain the relative movements.

Fractional Chern insulators in magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene

Fractional Chern insulators (FCIs) are lattice analogues of fractional quantum Hall states that may provide a new avenue towards manipulating non-Abelian excitations. Early theoretical studies have predicted their existence in systems with flat Chern bands and highlighted the critical role of a particular quantum geometry. However, FCI states have been observed only in Bernal-stacked bilayer graphene (BLG) aligned with hexagonal boron nitride (hBN), in which a very large magnetic field is responsible for the existence of the Chern bands, precluding the realization of FCIs at zero field. By contrast, magic-angle twisted BLG supports flat Chern bands at zero magnetic field and therefore offers a promising route towards stabilizing zero-field FCIs. Here we report the observation of eight FCI states at low magnetic field in magic-angle twisted BLG enabled by high-resolution local compressibility measurements. The first of these states emerge at 5 T, and their appearance is accompanied by the simultaneous disappearance of nearby topologically trivial charge density wave states. We demonstrate that, unlike the case of the BLG/hBN platform, the principal role of the weak magnetic field is merely to redistribute the Berry curvature of the native Chern bands and thereby realize a quantum geometry favourable for the emergence of FCIs. Our findings strongly suggest that FCIs may be realized at zero magnetic field and pave the way for the exploration and manipulation of anyonic excitations in flat moiré Chern bands.
