Statistical equilibrium in cometary C2. IV - A 10 level model including singlet-triplet transitions

Resonance fluorescence theory was used to calculate the population distribution in the energy states of the C2 molecule in comets. Ten electronic states, each with 14 vibrational states, were used in the calculations. These new calculations differ from earlier work in terms of additional electronic levels and the role of singlet-triplet transitions between the b and X levels. Since transition moments are not known, calculations are made of observable flux ratios for an array of possible values. Comparison with existing observations indicates that the a-X transition is very important, and there is marginal indication that the b-X transition is present. Swan band sequence flux ratios at large heliocentric distance are needed, as are accurate Mulliken/Swan and Phillips/Ballik-Ramsay (1963) observations.

Planar imaging of the mixing characteristics of a multi-element triplet injector

Planar light scattering has been used to investigate the turbulent mixing in a multi-element triplet injector at mixture ratio conditions typical of liquid rocket engine gas generators. Experiments were conducted at atmospheric pressure using air seeded with smoke particles to simulate the oxidizer flow and unseeded air to simulate the fuel. Data sets of 200 images (containing 122,000 simultaneous measurements each) of the instantaneous distribution of the scattered light were acquired at several positions throughout the flow. These images have been processed digitally to produce local distributions of the average and rms fluctuation of the mixture fraction. In addition, the spatial autocorrelation of the images has been calculated and analyzed to determine a mean length scale related to the large scale structures in the flow.

Solar O I 1304-A triplet line profiles

Estimates were made of the full-disk line profiles of the solar O I resonant triplet at 1304 A, using data from the SMM and the Orbiting Solar Observatory 8 for the time period 1975-1985. The observed line profiles are parameterized using a nonlinear least squares fit of the data by a simple empirical representation of the general line shape. The derived full-disk line shape parameters may be used, in combination with an appropriate value for the line-integrated full-disk solar flux, in the analysis of planetary or cometary O I 1304-A observations under any solar conditions.

Accurate Effective Core Potential for Germanium. Application to the Singlet-Triplet Splitting in GeH2

An accurate effective core potential (ECP), including frozen 3s, 3p orbitals and a single-zeta contracted 3d orbital, has been developed for germanium. The ECP with associated valence basis set reproduces the corresponding all-electron results for the atomic excitations and the geometry and excitation energies of GeH2. At the SCF, CAS SCF and CI levels the maximum difference from the all-electron results is 0.5 kcal/mol in the (sup 1)A(sub 1) - (sup 3)B(sub 1) excitation energy. Finally, the ECP description is used with an extended valence basis set and large-scale CAS SCF and multi-reference CI wavefunctions to compute the singlet-triplet separation; the final CI result including the Davidson correction is 22.5 kcal/mol.

Star Identification Using a Triplet Algorithm

The stars observed by onboard star trackers must be identified in order for the star tracker information to be used for attitude determination. Star identification associates the observed stars in the body frame with catalog stars, the positions of which in an inertial frame are well known. If the attitude is approximately known (from less accurate sensors) identification is relatively simple, but if there is no prior attitude knowledge (the Lost in Space problem) star identification is quite difficult. A new, reliable, and accurate star identification algorithm has been developed for use in a batch, ground-based attitude determination system. The identification algorithm uses input from one or more star trackers, each of which can observe three or more stars simultaneously. If observations are available at different times, rate data is used to relate them. The algorithm includes the following steps that are automatically performed: 1) Observations are examined to determine the optimal set of simultaneous star observations in a single tracker. 2) The selected optimal observations are identified using a triplet match. 3) The identified stars in the selected tracker at the selected time are used to compute an attitude at that time. 4) The rate data is refined by determination of biases that minimize the dispersion of repeated observations of the same stars. 5) The refined rate data is used to propagate the attitude to the times of each star observation. 6) The attitude at each time is used to associate all stars observed at that time, in each tracker, with catalog stars. The overall algorithm is very dependable at producing accurate star identification with no initial attitude input.

Mixing and Recovery Performance of Triplet Impinging Injectors with Varying Flow Areas for Detonative Combustion

Detonation combustion devices such as rotating detonation rocket engines (RDREs) have been proposed as an alternative to traditional deflagration engines as detonative combustion has a higher theoretical thermodynamic efficiency. Improved performance of an RDRE depends heavily on the propellant injection and mixing. Impingement type injectors have been shown to achieve higher characteristic velocity or combustion efficiency for both detonative and deflagrative engines. This work is exploratory in nature and focuses on unlike triplet impinging injectors to study how the flow area of the injector affects the mixing of propellants and recovery under the transient, high-peak pressure conditions unique to RDREs. A ratio of fuel flow area to oxidizer flow area is set to achieve a given mass flow rate and thus propellant mixture ratio. Four different fluid flow areas are studies while keeping the fuel/oxidizer ratio constant. This work has found that, while maintaining a fixed ratio fuel to oxidizer flow area, the injectors with smaller orifice areas show better resistance to backflow in steady state tests and have shorter recovery times in backflow experiments. Even with the shorter recovery times, it is found that the shortest recovery time is still an order of magnitude slower than the frequency of a single detonation wave traversing a 3” RDRE.

Coherent photoexcitation of entangled triplet pair states

The functional properties of organic semiconductors are defined by the interplay between optically bright and dark states. Organic devices require rapid conversion between these bright and dark manifolds for maximum efficiency, and one way to achieve this is through multiexciton generation (S 1 → 1 TT). Here, the dark state 1 TT is typically generated from bright S 1 after optical excitation; however, the mechanistic details are hotly debated. Here we report a 1 TT generation pathway in which it can be coherently photoexcited, without any involvement of bright S 1 . Using <10-fs transient absorption spectroscopy and pumping sub-resonantly, 1 TT is directly generated from the ground state. Applying this method to a range of pentacene dimers and thin films of various aggregation types, we determine the critical material properties that enable this forbidden pathway. Through a strikingly simple technique, this result opens the door for new mechanistic insights into 1 TT and other dark states in organic materials.
