Proton collisional excitation in the ground configurations of Fe/+12/ and Fe/+13/. III - Transitions between magnetic sublevels

Values of proton collisional cross-sections at coronal energies have been computer for all transitions between magnetic sublevels of the Fe(+12) and Fe(+13) ground configurations. Semiclassical Coulomb excitation theory was used with the resulting truncated Schroedinger equations being directly integrated. The corresponding rate constants for coronal temperatures are presented and comparison is made with previous results.

Calculation of rotational transition probabilities in molecular collisions - Application to N2 + N2

A computational method is proposed to obtain rotational transition probabilities in collisions between two diatomic molecules. The potential method of Rabitz and an exponential approximation are used to solve the semiclassical coupled equations without invoking any perturbational technique. The collision trajectory is determined in the classical modified-wave-number approximation. The method can treat systems involving strong interactions and provide probabilities for transitions even with a multiquantum jump. A simultaneous transition in the rotational states of both molecules, i.e., the rotational-rotational energy transfer, is taken into account. An application to the system N2 + N2 is presented.

Vibration-translation energy transfer in anharmonic diatomic molecules. II - The vibrational quantum-number dependence

A semiclassical model of the inelastic collision between a vibrationally excited anharmonic oscillator and a structureless atom is used to predict the variation of thermally averaged vibrational-translational rate coefficients with temperature and initial-state quantum number. Multiple oscillator states are included in a numerical solution for collinear encounters. The results are compared with CO-He experimental values for both ground and excited initial states using several simplified forms of the interaction potential. The numerical model is also used as a basis for evaluating several less complete, but analytic, models. Two computationally simple analytic approximations are found that successfully reproduce the numerical rate coefficients for a wide range of molecular properties and collision partners. Their limitations are identified, and the relative rates of multiple-quantum transitions from excited states are evaluated for several molecular types.

Comment on the relation between the nonadiabatic coupling and the complex intersection of potential energy curves

Simple relations are discussed that provide a correspondence between the complex intersection of two potential surfaces and the nonadiabatic coupling matrix element between those surfaces. These are key quantities in semiclassical and quantum mechanical theories of collision induced electronic transitions. Within the two state approximation, the complex intersection is shown to be directly related to the location and magnitude of the peak in the nonadiabatic coupling. Two cases are considered: the avoided crossing between two potential surfaces; and the spin orbit interaction due to a P-2 halogen atom. Comparisons are made between the results of the two-state model and the results of ab initio quantum chemical calculations.

The influence of molecular rotation on vibration-translation energy transfer

A three-dimensional vibration-rotation collision model is formulated within a semiclassical framework to study the effect of coupled rotational motion on the rate of vibrational energy transfer for collisions between anharmonic diatomic molecules and structureless atoms. Emphasis is on the net rates of vibrational energy transfer summed over all final rotational states rather than those for individual vibration-rotation transitions. The corresponding three-dimensional rate parameters are cast into forms that may be identified with equivalent parameters associated with the collinear approximation. Their comparisons allow the validity of a collinear model to be evaluated and some constraints on its application to be implied. The mechanisms of vibrational energy transfer including rotational transitions are shown to be separable into three classes which are identified and discussed

Transformation theory and translation factors in inelastic atomic collisions

It is shown through the use of transformation theory that unique semiclassical atomic scattering states which obey the asymptotic conditions of formal scattering theory can be derived by transforming 'nontraveling' atomic states, ie., states whose coordinate variables are referred to a stationary origin, to frames at rest with respect to the incoming or outgoing particles. An overview of the problem of properly defining such scattering states is presented. The operator which carries out the necessary transformation from inertial to noninertial frames is derived and its properties are discussed. The relation of this transformation operator to the 'translation factor' discussed in the literature is presented. The application of this operator to transform the time-dependent Schroedinger equation from an inertial to a noninertial frame is presented and shown to introduce new terms in the resulting equation. The implications of these new terms to scattering problems are discussed.

These are key quantities in semiclassical and quantum-mechanical theories of collision-induced electronic transitions. Within the two-state approximation, the complex intersection is shown to be directly related to the location and magnitude of the peak in the nonadiabatic coupling. Two cases have been considered: (1) the avoided crossing between two potential surfaces, and (2) the spin-orbit interaction due to a 2P halogen atom. The buckling characteristics of a hypersonic beaded skin panel were investigated under pure compression with boundary conditions similar to those found in a wing mounted condition. The primary phases of analysis reported include: (1) experimental testing of the panel to failure; (2) finite element structural analysis of the beaded panel with the computer program NASTRAN; and (3) summary of the semiclassical buckling equations for the beaded panel under purely compressive loads. A comparison of each of the analysis methods is also included.

Experimental and finite element investigation of the buckling characteristics of a beaded skin panel for a hypersonic aircraft

As part of NASA's continuing research into hypersonics and 85 square foot hypersonic wing test section of a proposed hypersonic research airplane was laboratory tested. The project reported on in this paper has carried the hypersonic wing test structure project one step further by testing a single beaded panel to failure. The primary interest was focused upon the buckling characteristics of the panel under pure compression with boundary conditions similar to those found in a wing mounted condition. Three primary phases of analysis are included in the report. These phases include: experimental testing of the beaded panel to failure; finite element structural analysis of the beaded panel with the computer program NASTRAN; a summary of the semiclassical buckling equations for the beaded panel under purely compressive loads. Comparisons between each of the analysis methods are also included.

The semiclassical transition probability was incorporated in the simulation for energy exchange between rotational and translational energy. The results provide details on the fundamental mechanisms of gas kinetics where analytical methods were impractical. The validity of the local Maxwellian assumption and relaxation time, rotational-translational energy transition, and a velocity analysis of the inelastic collision were discussed in detail.

SCF treatment of charge polarization effects in intermediate-energy electron scattering calculations with applications to N2

Converged rotational close coupling calculations of differential, integral, and momentum-transfer cross sections are obtained for seven model potentials for electron-N2 scattering at an impact energy of 30 eV. The model potentials involve a static potential calculated by the INDO/1s or INDOXI/1s method, and exchange potential calculated by the semiclassical exchange approximation from the INDO/1s or INDOXI/1s unperturbed electron density and a polarization potential. The polarization potentials used include the Buckley-Burke semiempirical one and various modifications of the INDOXI and INDO SCF (self-consistent-field) adiabatic polarization potentials. Without adjustment of parameters, good agreement is obtained with the angle dependence of the experimentally measured sum of the elastic and rotational excitation differential cross sections; however, the absolute value of the calculated cross sections is about 20-30% larger than the measured values in the best case, perhaps indicating that the model potentials are too strong or should have a nonzero imaginary part.

Molecular collision processes in the presence of picosecond laser pulses

Radiative transitions in molecular collision processes taking place in the presence of picosecond pulses are studied within a semiclassical formalism. An expression for adiabatic potential surfaces in the electronic-field representation is obtained, which directly leads to the evaluation of transition probabilities. Calculations with a Landau-Zener-type model indicate that picosecond pulses can be much more effective in inducing transitions than a single long pulse of the same intensity and the same total energy, if the intensity is sufficiently high that the perturbation treatment is not valid.

Proton collisional excitation in the lowest lying 3P terms of ions in the Be and Mg isoelectronic sequences

Proton collisional excitation cross sections and rate constants are presented for transitions between the 3P(J) fine-structure levels of the lowest-lying sp configurations in a number of astrophysically important ions belonging to the Be and Mg isoelectronic sequences. The calculations were made by direct integration of the Schroedinger equation resulting from semiclassical Coulomb excitation theory. The cross sections and rate constants for the 3P(J) transitions in the lowest-lying P(2) configurations are expected to be similar to those for the corresponding sp configuration transitions, and this is illustrated for C III. For the high-temperature ion Ca XVII alpha particle excitation is shown to be unimportant for situations involving ordinary values of the He/H abundance ratio. A simple, but apparently accurate method for determining certain radial integrals for low-lying excited configurations is proposed.

Scale covariance and G-varying cosmology. II - Thermodynamics, radiation, and the 3 K background

Within the framework of a scale-covariant theory of gravitation, a semiclassical description of particles and photons is given. Thermodynamic relations consistent with the modified conservation equations are derived. Application to a system of radiation shows that the observed 3-K background radiation can be interpreted, within the present framework, as a remnant of equilibrium radiation in the past. As the theory postulates a nonstandard coupling between gravitation and electrodynamics, the assumption that Einstein's theory of gravitation is unchanged forces modifications at the atomic level. The use of Minkowskian spacetime in atomic physics is found to be adequate only over small, but not large, time scales compared with the age of the universe. As a result, a relation between energy and the frequency of a free photon is demonstrated. Possible observational consequences of this relation are discussed.

Semi-classical Reissner-Nordstrom model for the structure of charged leptons

The lepton self-mass problem is examined within the framework of the quantum theory of electromagnetism and gravity. Consideration is given to the Reissner-Nordstrom solution to the Einstein-Maxwell classical field equations for an electrically charged mass point, and the WKB theory for a semiclassical system with total energy zero is used to obtain an expression for the Einstein-Maxwell action factor. The condition obtained is found to account for the observed mass values of the three charged leptons, and to be in agreement with the correspondence principle.

Elastic scattering and rotational excitation of a polyatomic molecule by electron impact - Acetylene

Differential, integral, momentum transfer, and partial cross sections have been calculated for elastic scattering and rotational excitation of C2H2 by 10-eV electrons. The effective potential includes static, exchange, and polarization interactions calculated by the INDOX/1s method and the semiclassical exchange approximation with adiabatic polarization at large electron-molecule distances. The scattering is treated by well converged rotational close coupling using the centrifugal dominant scheme to select the channels included and including up to 32 coupled channels for a given total angular momentum. The calculated integral cross sections for pure elastic scattering and rotation excitation are 54.5 and 41.4 a(0)squared, respectively. These are much larger than the values (34.4 and 18.6 a(0)squared) previously (Onda and Truhlar, 1979) calculated for the isoelectronic molecule N2, at this energy. This illustrates how the greater spatial extent of C2H2 greatly increases the cross sections for pure elastic and rotationally inelastic scattering.
