IER 557: Godiva Pulse Repeatability and Characterization (CED-3A Report)

Godiva IV is a fast burst critical assembly constructed of approximately 65 kg of highly enriched uranium (HEU) fuel alloyed with 1.5% molybdenum for strength. Godiva IV is proposed as the radiation source for IER 498: Design a Shielding Benchmark with a Metal Critical Source. IER 498 proposes a two-burst method to determine the performance of shielding samples, comparing the transmission of the source radiation to detectors with and without a shielding sample present. This eliminates the need for an absolute calibration and allows many uncertainties to cancel. However, the source term variability must be low compared to other sources of experimental uncertainty to ensure the overall uncertainty meets acceptable levels to provide useful measurements. The primary goal of this experiment is to quantify the source term variability, or reproducibility, of Godiva bursts, focusing on the 70 °C bursts planned for IER 498 measurements. Discussions during IER 498 noted that a number of bursts (on the order of six to ten) as identical as possible would be performed and that a 5-7% standard deviation in source intensity would be acceptable.

Ultra-black coatings for space instruments: a comparison of traditional Ebonol C processes and a method for future repeatability

Ultra-black coatings have served various roles in space instrumentation and hardware. The Ebonol C coating has been used for various missions requiring low reflectivity on aluminum substrates that are electrically conducting. This coating is produced through the formation of a cupric oxide structure on an intermediate layer of copper applied to the aluminum. For many years, this commercial formulation has been used ubiquitously for space instruments. The coating relies upon details of the copper base layer that have been trade secret at various finishing companies, and the availability of the Ebonol C formulated chemistry from the chemical supplier. In recent years, this product has been discontinued at various times, leaving vendors to either rely on expired stock or to formulate their own equivalents. Here, we detail the processing methods, chemistries, and resultant coating structures that produce reflectance performance equivalent to baseline historical reflectance data. This process detail will ensure equivalent performance for such coatings for future missions and link the performance to past and currently deployed instruments.

Elevations in Tumor Necrosis Factor Alpha and Interleukin 6 From Neuronal-Derived Extracellular Vesicles in Repeated Low-Level Blast Exposed Personnel

The purpose of this pilot study was to determine if military service members with histories of hundreds to thousands of low-level blast exposures (i. e., experienced breachers) had different levels of serum and neuronal-derived extracellular vesicle (EV) concentrations of interleukin (IL)-6, IL-10, and tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNFα), compared to matched controls, and if these biomarkers related to neurobehavioral symptoms. Participants were experienced breachers (n = 20) and matched controls without blast exposures (n = 14). Neuronal-derived EVs were isolated from serum and identified with mouse anti-human CD171. Serum and neuronal-derived EVs were analyzed for IL-6, IL-10, and TNFα using an ultra-sensitive assay. Serum TNFα concentrations were decreased in breachers when compared to control concentrations (p < 0.01). There were no differences in serum concentrations of IL-6, IL-10, or the IL-6/IL-10 ratio between breachers and controls (p's > 0.01). In neuronal-derived EVs, TNFα and IL-6 levels were increased in breachers compared to controls (p's < 0.01), and IL-10 levels were decreased in the breacher group compared to controls (p < 0.01). In breachers the IL-6/IL-10 ratio in neuronal-derived EVs was higher compared to controls, which correlated with higher total Rivermead Post-concussion Questionnaire (RPQ) scores (p's < 0.05). These findings suggest that exposure of personnel to high numbers of low-level blast over a career may result in enduring central inflammation that is associated with chronic neurological symptoms. The data also suggest that peripheral markers of inflammation are not necessarily adequate surrogates for central neuroinflammation.

Filtration Performance of Layering Masks and Face Coverings and the Reusability of Cotton Masks after Repeated Washing and Drying

In this study, filtration efficiency of different respirators, face masks, and a 2-ply cotton handkerchief bandana was compared for particles in the size range of 60 nm-4 um under a "perfect fit" condition. The filtration efficiency at the most penetrating particle size of 0.3 um on average ranged from 83-99% for N95 and KN95 respirators, 42-88% for surgical masks, 16-23% for cloth masks, and 9% for bandana. We also investigated the effects of using double surgical masks or layering a cloth mask over various surgical masks in terms of their filtration characteristics. In most of these combinations, the filtration efficiency improved by ~25% for particles 0.3-1 um in diameter without any substantial change in the filter quality factor when compared to the highest of the individual mask results. To investigate the reusability of cotton cloth masks, 2-layer cotton fabric sample coupons were machine washed and dried for 52 cycles leading to an increase in inhalation resistance (~20 Pa) without affecting size-resolved filtration efficiency. Scanning electron microscopy revealed that washing and drying led to the gradual deconstruction of cotton fibers at the scale of several micrometers to hundreds of nanometers in the form of delamination of the fiber wall and fibrillation of the nanofiber constituents. Results indicate that cloth masks may be layered over surgical masks for additional benefits, and that cloth masks made out of cotton fabric can be washed and reused numerous times without a significant loss in filtration efficiency.

System and method for repeated metal deposition-dewetting steps to form a nano-particle etching mask producing thicker layer of engraved metasurface

A method and system is disclosed for creating an optical component having a spatially controlled refractive index and uniform anti-reflective layer. The method may involve alternately depositing and dewetting two or more thin metal material layers on the substrate to form a mask having a spatially varying nano-particle distribution, and with an increased thickness beyond what could be achieved using a single, thick layer of the same material. The substrate may then be etched, using the mask, to imprint a spatially patterned nanostructure pattern on a surface the substrate in accordance with the mask.
