Frequency monitoring a LIDAR transmitter for pulse-by-pulse analysis and control

An electronic technique is described whereby the heterodyne mixing frequency of a pulsed LIDAR transmitter is displayed on a color-coded linear bar graph. The technique is of great utility for manually fine tuning the laser output frequency when the use of conventional frequency counters and spectrum analyzers is impractical in a rapidly firing system.

Continued Development of the Pulsed Magnetic Nozzle for the Pulsed Fission Fusion (PuFF) Vehicle

High thrust, high specific impulse propulsion systems, such as PuFF (Pulsed Fission-Fusion)offer a new paradigm of speed and safety when exploring the solar system. To realize thesepossibilites, PuFF needs a mature magnetic nozzle design. PuFF’s magnetic nozzle is uniquein that it must provide power in addition to thrust. In the authors’ opinion, the power systemdesign is fairly mature, but nozzle thrust coil design is less so. Previous work has suggested thatthe PuFF magnetic nozzle will behave similarly to a ‘magnetic reflection chamber,’ relying onprinciples of magnetic flux compression to re-direct nozzle flow. However, recent work, usingthe 3D modeling software SPFMax, suggests that plasma motion in the nozzle will be drivenby the Lorentz force. This recent work is limited in that the plasma did not completely leavethe nozzle before the simulation ended. In this work, we aim to extend the SPFMax modelfrom previous work, with a bolstered electromagnetic field solver, so the model can run untilthe plasma is fully evacuated. We hope to confirm previous results regarding the ideal PuFFnozzle design, but we could be surprised. Through improving the PuFF nozzle model, weaim to reduce technical risk with building the nozzle, realize paradigm-shifting performancenumbers, and allow rapid, reliable, and safe exploration of the solar system.

Scaling of pulsed nanosecond capillary plasmas at different specific energy deposition

Nano-second, capillary discharges (nCDs) are unique plasma sources in their ability to sustain high specific energy deposition ω dep approaching 10 eV/molecule in molecular gases. This high energy loading on short timescales produces both high plasma densities and high densities of molecular exited states. These high densities of electrons and excited states interact with each other during the early afterglow through electron collision quenching and associative ionization. In this paper we discuss results from a two-dimensional computational investigation of a nCD sustained in air at a pressure of 28.5 mbar and with a voltage amplitude 20 kV. Discharges were investigated for two circuit configurations—a floating low voltage electrode and with the low voltage electrode connected to ground through a ballast resistor. The first configuration produced a single ionization wave from the high to low voltage electrode. The second produced converging ionization waves beginning at both electrodes. With a decrease of the tube radius, the velocity of the ionization fronts decreased while the shape of the ionization wave changed from the electron density being distributed smoothly in the radial direction, to being hollow shaped where there is a higher electron density near the tube wall. For sufficiently small tubes, the near-wall maxima merge to have the higher density on the axis of the capillary tube. In the early afterglow, the temporal and radial behavior of the N 2 (C 3 Π u ) density is a sensitive function of ω dep due to electron collision quenching. Finally, these trends indicate that starting from ω dep $\geqslant$ 0.3 eV/molecule, it is necessary to take into account interactions of electrons with electronically excited species during the discharge and early afterglow.

The Leading Modes of Asian Summer Monsoon Variability as Pulses of Atmospheric Energy Flow

Monsoon rainfall anomalies are often organized into dynamical modes that are more predictable than rainfall at specific locations. Here a linear response function (LRF) is constructed to extract the neutral modes (NM) of the dynamical atmospheric system and their optimal forcing that govern precipitation variability, providing a dynamical underpinning for the empirically derived, recurrent rainfall patterns. The leading mode (NM1) features a shift in the Atlantic ITCZ, a drying over the Indian Ocean and Indian subcontinent, and a “South-Flood-North Drought (SFND)” pattern over eastern China, a pattern inferable from changes in the atmospheric energy flow forced by the corresponding optimal forcing and further enhanced by the water vapor and cloud feedbacks. Moreover, the slow evolving component of the NM1 in response to CO2 forcing can be skillfully predicted by running the ocean heat uptake through the LRF, implicating a deterministic ocean dynamic source for the NM1-like trend under climate warming.

Production and diffusion of H 2 O 2 during the interaction of a direct current pulsed atmospheric pressure plasma jet on a hydrogel

The interaction of cold atmospheric pressure plasma jets with hydrogels has been used as a model system to study the interaction of plasmas with tissues. In this study, we analyze the diffusion of reactive oxygen species (in particular H 2 O 2 ) and quantify the amount of plasma-produced H 2 O 2 species that penetrates into a gelatin hydrogel. We show that the diffusion constant of H 2 O 2 in 10% gelatin hydrogel is similar to its diffusion constant in water and that the production of H 2 O 2 in the hydrogel is significantly less than the production of H 2 O 2 in distilled water for the same plasma operation conditions suggesting that the scavenging of OH radicals at the plasma-gel interface significantly reduces the H 2 O 2 production.

Pulse width-pulse rate modulator

Attitude control system designed for rockets regulates duty cycle of pneumatic valves so less fuel is required. Operation time of each valve is directly proportional to error signal and the dead band about a null is controlled by independently adjustable threshold circuits.
