Definition of fragmentation functions and the violation of sum rules

We point out a problem with the formulation and derivations of sum rules for quark fragmentation functions that impacts their validity in QCD, but which potentially points toward an improved understanding of final states in inclusive hard processes. Fragmentation functions give the distribution of final-state hadrons arising from a parton exiting a hard scattering, and the sum rules for momentum, electric charge, etc. express conservation of these quantities. The problem arises from a mismatch between the quark quantum numbers of the initial quark and the fact that all observed final-state hadrons are confined bound states with color zero. We point that, in a confining theory like QCD, the Wilson line in the operator definition of a fragmentation function entails that the final state in a fragmentation function includes a bound state in the external field generated by the Wilson line. We justify this with the aid of general features of string hadronization. The anomalous bound states are restricted to fractional momentum z = 0 . They tend to invalidate sum rules like the one for charge conservation when applied to the fragmentation functions inferred from experimental data but not the momentum sum rule. We propose to exploit our ideas in future studies as a way to relate the fragmentation functions extracted from inclusive cross sections to more detailed nonperturbative descriptions of final state hadronization. We also describe scenarios wherein the traditional sum rules might remain approximately valid with a reasonably high degree of accuracy. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Analysis of parton distributions in a pion with Bézier parametrizations

We explore the role of parametrizations for nonperturbative QCD functions in global analyses, with a specific application to extending a phenomenological analysis of the parton distribution functions (PDFs) in the charged pion realized in the xFitter fitting framework. The parametrization dependence of PDFs in our pion fits substantially enlarges the uncertainties from the experimental sources estimated in the previous analyses. We systematically explore the parametrization dependence by employing a novel technique to automate generation of polynomial parametrizations for PDFs that makes use of Bézier curves. This technique is implemented in a ++ module that is included in the xFitter program. Our analysis reveals that the sea and gluon distributions in the pion are not well disentangled, even when considering measurements in leading-neutron deep inelastic scattering. For example, the pion PDF solutions with a vanishing gluon and large quark sea are still experimentally allowed, which elevates the importance of ongoing lattice and nonperturbative QCD calculations, together with the planned pion scattering experiments, for conclusive studies of the pion structure. Measurement of J/psi Production near Threshold in J/psi -> µ+µ-

This dissertation presents a detailed analysis of J/psi photoproduction near the kinematic threshold in the J/psi -> µ+µ- decay channel, based on data collected by the GlueX experiment at Jefferson Lab. The study aims to probe the structure of the proton and the underlying mechanisms of heavy vector quarkonium photoproduction, contributing to a deeper understanding of Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) in the non-perturbative regime. The measurement focuses on the total and differential cross-sections of J/psi photoproduction and explores various theoretical models, including two-gluon and three-gluon exchange, open-charm contributions, and potential exotic states like pentaquarks. The experimental setup, featuring a high-precision tagged photon beam and advanced particle identification techniques, allowed for the separation of J/psi events from background processes. The analysis of the J/psi -> µ+µ- channel yields cross-sections that complement previous measurements in the J/psi -> e+e- decay mode, providing new insights into gluon dynamics at low momentum transfer. This work also examines the systematic uncertainties and provides a comprehensive comparison of results with theoretical predictions, highlighting the role of gluon exchange mechanisms in the photoproduction process. The results presented in this dissertation help refine our understanding of proton structure and QCD dynamics, offering a robust dataset for future theoretical and experimental studies in hadronic physics.

Extracting the distribution amplitude of light pseudoscalar mesons using the HOPE method

The pseudoscalar meson light-cone distribution amplitudes (LCDAs) are essential non-perturbative inputs for a range of high-energy exclusive processes in quantum chromodynamics. In this proceedings, progress towards a determination of the low Mellin moments of the pion and kaon LCDAs by the HOPE Collaboration is reported.

Baryon-baryon, meson-meson, and meson-baryon interactions in nonrelativistic QCD

Van der Waals potentials describing interactions between color-singlet mesons and/or baryons vanish at leading order in potential nonrelativistic quantum chromodynamics (pNRQCD). This result and constraints from Gauss’s law are used to prove that weakly coupled pNRQCD van der Waals potentials in generic non-Abelian gauge theories with only heavy quarks are too weak to form bound states whose color state is a product of color singlets. Quantum Monte Carlo calculations of four, five, and six quarks with equal masses provide numerical evidence that exotic color configurations are higher energy than products of color-singlet hadrons, suggesting that equal-mass fully heavy tetraquark, pentaquark, and hexaquark bound states do not exist at next-to-leading order in pNRQCD and at all orders in QCD-like theories in which all quark masses are asymptotically large. Mechanisms for generating hadron-hadron bound states are identified, which necessarily involve large quark-mass hierarchies, relativistic effects arising from the presence of sufficiently light quarks, or nonperturbative effects outside the scope of weakly coupled pNRQCD.

Off forward non- s -channel helicity conserving contributions to exclusive vector quarkonium production from the spin dependent BFKL Pomeron

A novel contribution to off forward, exclusive vector quarkonium production, γ(*)+p → V+p, at high energy is derived which corresponds to a t-channel exchange of a Balitsky-Fadin-Kuraev-Lipatov (BFKL) hard Pomeron, with a helicity flip of the proton. This “spin-dependent BFKL Pomeron” is required in a consistent expansion in powers of the momentum transfer t ≈−Δ$^{2}_{⊥}$ beyond first order. The spin-dependent Pomeron violates s-channel helicity conservation at O(Δ$^{2}_{⊥}$), and beyond. Expanding to leading twist only, it corresponds to generalized parton distributions E g (x,t) for vanishing skewness. We derive explicit expressions for the eikonal BFKL amplitudes, to all orders in dipole size times momentum transfer, for all helicity configurations of the particles in the initial and final states. We also provide numerical estimates of the helicity flip two gluon exchange amplitude at moderate x from a light cone quark model of the proton. The spin dependent BFKL Pomeron could, in principle, be discovered via double spin asymmetries in e+p → e+p+J/ψ with a transversely polarized proton and longitudinally polarized electron in the initial state.

String-based parametrization of nucleon GPDs at any skewness: A comparison to lattice QCD

We introduce a string-based parametrization for nucleon quark and gluon generalized parton distributions (GPDs) valid at all skewness values. The conformal moments of the GPDs are expressed as sums of the spin-j nucleon A-form factor and the skewness-dependent spin-j nucleon D-form factor. This representation, which fulfills the polynomiality condition (due to Lorentz invariance) and does not rely on model-specific assumptions, is derived from t-channel string exchanges in anti-de Sitter spaces. The spin-j nucleon D-form factor is closely related to the spin-j nucleon A-form factor. We use the Mellin moments from empirical parton distributions to model the spin-j nucleon A-form factors. Using only five Regge slope parameters, fixed from the electromagnetic and gravitational form factors, our string-based parametrization generates accurate singlet, nonsinglet, isovector, and flavor-separated nucleon quark GPDs, along with symmetric nucleon gluon GPDs from their Mellin-Barnes integral representations. Our isovector nucleon quark GPD is in agreement with existing lattice data. Our string-based parametrization should facilitate the empirical extraction and global analysis of nucleon GPDs in exclusive processes, bypassing the deconvolution challenge.

Revisiting the gluon density from the Balitsky-Kovchegov equation with kinematical constraints and large 𝑥 terms

We perform analysis of the small 𝑥 nonlinear evolution equation formulated in momentum space supplemented by higher order terms. The equation is defined in the wide range of transverse momentum and longitudinal momentum fractions extending previous studies performed in Kutak and Kwiecinski [Screening effects in the ultrahigh-energy neutrino interactions, Eur. Phys. J. C 29, 521 (2003).] and in Kutak and Stasto [Unintegrated gluon distribution from modified BK equation, Eur. Phys. J. C 41, 343 (2005).]. The linear part of the equation is motivated by the renormalization group improved small 𝑥 approach, which accounts for resummation of higher orders, and includes collinear splitting functions and kinematical constraints. The solution to the equation is then used to perform the fit to deep inelastic scattering reduced cross section data.

A Challenge for Discrimination of Color-Singlet versus Color-Octet Quarkonium Production

The precise mechanism for production of quarkonium at hadron colliders is still an open question. Within non-relativistic quantum chromodynamics, quarkonium production cross sections can be factorized into short-distance, perturbative contributions and universal, non-perturbative, long-distance matrix elements, and then summed over quantum numbers of the heavy quark pair. In principle, at short-distances, the heavy quark pair can be either in a color-singlet or color-octet state, and it is desirable to establish the relative contributions to compare with data and to make predictions in different experimental environments. From the explicit form of the lowest-order perturbative matrix elements for color-singlet and color-octet production, we show that the structure of the optimal observable for discrimination on phase space, the likelihood ratio, has strong dependence on the angular momentum state of the heavy quark pair. This presents an obstruction for construction of a single, robust discrimination observable that can be applied to production of an arbitrary quarkonium state.

Tagged DVCS on neutron with the CLAS12 Experiment and the detector BONuS12 at Jefferson Lab (USA)

Hadronic physics studies the properties of the proton and neutron. The theory of Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) governs the structure of hadrons. Non-perturbative structure functions are used to describe the hadrons? structure. Generalized Parton Distributions (GPDs) are a set of structure functions providing access to a 3D view of the nucleon. GPDs contain information about the longitudinal momentum and transverse position of quarks and their correlation. They are related to the spin structure and play a role in solving the proton spin puzzle. They provide access to the quarks? orbital angular momentum, a crucial puzzle piece. For this, measurements on the proton, already present, and neutron are necessary. This thesis aims to explore Compton scattering on the neutron with a deuterium target by measuring the spectator proton with the CLAS12 detector and the BONuS12 RTPC at Jefferson Lab. This work first describes the implementation, which I carried out, of a Kalman filter to reconstruct spectator protons in the BONuS12 detector. The second part of the manuscript is dedicated to the work on the analysis of DVCS on the neutron with the subtraction of background noises. Two different methods for the subtraction of ?0 will be detailed. Finally, the obtained results are presented and discussed

Quantum entanglement correlations in double quark PDFs

Methods from Quantum Information Theory are used to scrutinize quantum correlations encoded in the two-quark density matrix over light-cone momentum fractions x 1 and x 2 . A nonperturbative three quark model light-cone wavefunction predicts significant nonclassical correlations associated with the “entanglement negativity” measure for asymmetric and small quark momentum fractions. We perform one step of QCD scale evolution of the entire density matrix, not just its diagonal (dPDF), by computing collinearly divergent corrections due to the emission of a gluon. Finally, we present first qualitative numerical results for single-step scale evolution of quantum entanglement correlations in double quark PDFs. At a higher Q 2 scale, the nonclassical correlations manifest in the dPDF for nearly symmetric momentum fractions.
