Particle and field stress balance within a planetary magnetosphere

A technique is developed for experimentally estimating the local tensor stresses within a planetary magnetic field configuration characterized by local spacecraft measurements. Key to the technique is the determination of the shapes of field lines using the symmetry properties of the system coupled with local and instantaneous measurements of the field line inclination angles. The technique is applied here to the inner and middle Saturnian magnetosphere using data returned by the Magnetic Field Experiment on the Voyager 1 spacecraft. It is concluded that the ring current has substantial radial structure, heretofore not shown. Outside about 13 R(s) the newly derived field stresses match remarkably well the funtional variation of the centrifugal corotation stresses of the cool particle population measured previously by the Plasma Science Experiment. Inside about 13 R(s) the key structure in the derived field stresses, a prominent local maximum, matches the approximate position of an apparent strong pressure gradient in the energetic particles characterized by the Low-Energy Charged Particle detectors.

Simultaneous prenoon and postnoon observations of three field-aligned current systems from Viking and DMSP-F7

The spatial structure of dayside large-scale field-aligned current (FAC) systems is examined by using Viking and Defense Meteorological Satellite Program-F7 (DMSP-F7) data. We focus on four events in which the satellites simultaneously observed postnoon and prenoon three FAC systems: the region 2, the region 1, and the mantle (referred to as midday region O) systems, from equatorward to poleward. These events provide the most solid evidence to date that the midday region O system is a separate and unique FAC system, and is not an extension of the region 1 system from other local times. The events are examined comprehensively by making use of a mulit-instrumental data set, which includes magnetic field, particle flux, electric field, auroral UV image data from the satellites, and the Sondrestrom convection data. The results are summarized as follows: (1) Region 2 currents flow mostly in the central plasma sheet (CPS) precipitation region, often overlapping with the boundary plasma sheet (BPD) at their poleward edge. (2) The region 1 system is located in the core part of the auroral oval and is confined in a relatively narrow range in latitude which includes the convection reversal. The low-latitude boundary layer, possibly including the outer part of the plasma sheet, and the external cusp are the major source regions of dayside region 1 currents. (2) Midday region O currents flow on open field lines and are collocated with the shear of antisunward convection flows with velocites decreasing poleward. On the basis of these results we support the view that both prenoon and postnoon current systems consist of the three-sheet structure when the disctortion ofthe convection pattern associated with interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) B(sub Y) is small and both morningside and eveningside convection cells are crescent-shaped. We also propose that the midday region O and a part of the region 1 systems are closely coupled to the same source.

Auroral vector electric field and particle comparisons. II - Electrodynamics of an arc

The paper reports the results of energetic auroral electron and vector electric field measurements taken near and above a discrete auroral form and discusses their electrodynamic implications. Height-integrated Hall and Pedersen conductivities are computed in a quantitative fashion along the rocket payload trajectory. These conductivities, together with the electric fields, are used to describe the local auroral electrojet current system and to demonstrate an inverse relationship between the local electric field intensity and the height-integrated Pedersen conductivity. An analysis is presented of the divergence of both the electric field and the horizontal current as an effort to infer space charge densities and magnetic-field-aligned electrical currents near an auroral arc.

SHIVA (Spaceflight Holography Investigation in a Virtual Apparatus)

This paper provides the description and results of a ground-based experiment designed to support the spaceflight program SHIVA, which started its flight definition in 1998. SHIVA will apply new diagnostic tools and experimental techniques to test the validity of a newly discovered analytical solution to the general equation of motion of a particle in a fluid. We have designed a spaceflight experiment with the help of the theoretical model that is optimized for testing the model, and for measuring g, g-jitter, and other microgravity phenomena. Our ongoing, ground-based particle/fluid experiment supports both the experimental and theoretical aspects of the project. The ultimate spaceflight experiment will be similar to the ground-based experiment. The "virtual spaceflight chamber" concept asserts that certain spaceflight experiments can be recorded in holograms in such a manner that having the holograms on earth is optically equivalent to being back in space with unlimited time to conduct the experiment. Properly exploited, this concept can save a significant amount of experiment time in space by effectively bringing the. experiment optically back to earth. SHIVA will accomplish the following: record a large number of holograms of particle fields in space under controlled conditions, extract the precise, three-dimensional position of all of the particles as a function of time, examine the effects of all parameters on the motion of the particles, and test these against predictions of the Coimbra-Range1 solution to the general equation of motion. Particle sizes will range from hundreds of microns up to about 2 mm in diameter and will cover a range of densities and fluid viscosities. Forcing functions will be introduced onto the particle field, including at least the following: a) No isolation in the Spacelab vibration environment. b) Isolation from Spacelab. c) Oscillatory motion from 1 to 100 Hz with amplitudes of a few millimeters. d) Convective fields to be introduced mechanically. The first objective of this research is to understand the physics of particle interactions with fluids and other particles in low Reynolds number flows in microgravity. Secondary objectives are to: (1) observe and quantify g-jitter effects and microconvection on particles in fluids, (2) validate an exact solution to the general equation of motion of a particle in a fluid, and (3) to characterize'the ability of isolating platforms to isolate experiments containing particles in liquids.

Importance of gyrokinetic exact Fokker-Planck collisions in fusion plasma turbulence

Gyrokinetic simulations of turbulence are fundamental to understanding and predicting particle and energy loss in magnetic fusion devices. Previous works have used model collision operators with approximate field-particle terms of unknown accuracy and/or have neglected collisional finite Larmor radius effects. This research moves beyond models to demonstrate important corrections using a gyrokinetic Fokker-Planck collision operator with the exact field-particle terms, in realistic simulations of turbulence in magnetically confined fusion plasmas. The exact operator shows significant corrections for temperature-gradient-driven trapped electron mode turbulence and zonal flow damping, and for microtearing modes in a Joint European Torus pedestal under ITER-like wall conditions. Analysis of the corrections using parameter scans motivates an accurate model which closely reproduces the exact results while reducing computational demands.

Comparison of simultaneous magnetotail and polar ionospheric electric fields and energetic particles

DC electric fields and solar electrons were simultaneously measured by the Apollo 15 subsatellite in the earth's magnetotail at lunar orbital distance and by rocket and balloon experiments in the polar ionosphere. The magnetotail and polar ionosphere transverse electric fields are found generally to agree in magnitude and direction. The electron spectra from 0.5 to 200 keV are essentially identical, indicating that the potential difference due to parallel electric fields between the magnetotail and the rocket located in the polar ionosphere did not exceed approximately 500 V during the time of the measurements.

Sulfuric Acid New Particle Formation Field Campaign Report

This campaign aimed to measure gaseous sulfuric acid concentrations at the surface level using a newly developed sulfuric acid dimethylamine-reactive condensation particle counter (SAD-RCPC). Sulfuric acid is a key nucleation precursor and is the likely driving compound for new particle formation at the Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) user facility’s Southern Great Plains (SGP) observatory. The SAD-RCPC will be deployed in the future at ARM SGP (AFC010010: "Vertically Resolved Nucleation Precursors at SGP") scheduled for 2024. The campaign was in conjunction with Eleanor Browne's campaign (AFC010075: Boundary-layer gradients in new particle formation) and took place from 05/7/23 to 5/21/23. The measured sulfuric acid concentrations by the SAD-RCPC will be compared to concentrations measured by Browne's chemical ionization mass spectrometer (CIMS). The SAD-RCPC consisted of a glass flow reactor coupled to a 1-nm diethylene glycol condensation particle counter (DEG CPC). Sampled air was mixed with a high concentration of dimethylamine vapor (~1 ppbv). Sulfuric acid within the sampled gas nucleated with dimethylamine to form detectable 1-nm particles. The measured particle concentration was converted to sulfuric acid concentration using nucleation reaction kinetics. The pulse height distribution of particles detected by the DEG CPC was observed using a multi-channel analyzer. Large pre-existing particles were separated from the freshly formed particles in the SAD-RCPC from the pulse height distribution (PHD). During the short campaign, seven new particle formation events were observed. The SAD-RCPC detected an increase in sulfuric acid concentration, but this also coincided with an increase in pre-existing <3 nm particle concentrations. In addition, Browne's CIMS detect sulfuric acid concentrations in the range of 10 5 -10 6 cm -3 .
