Surface and Bulk Oxygen Kinetics of BaCo 0.4 Fe 0.4 Zr 0.2-X Y X O 3-δ Triple Conducting Electrode Materials

Triple ionic-electronic conductors have received much attention as electrode materials. In this work, the bulk characteristics of oxygen diffusion and surface exchange were determined for the triple-conducting BaCo 0.4 Fe 0.4 Zr 0.2-X Y X O 3-δ suite of samples. Y substitution increased the overall size of the lattice due to dopant ionic radius and the concomitant formation of oxygen vacancies. Oxygen permeation measurements exhibited a three-fold decrease in oxygen permeation flux with increasing Y substitution. The DC total conductivity exhibited a similar decrease with increasing Y substitution. These relatively small changes are coupled with an order of magnitude increase in surface exchange rates from Zr-doped to Y-doped samples as observed by conductivity relaxation experiments. The results indicate that Y-doping inhibits bulk O 2- conduction while improving the oxygen reduction surface reaction, suggesting better electrode performance for proton-conducting systems with greater Y substitution.

Atomically Revealing Bulk Point Defect Dynamics in Hydrogen‐Driven γ‐Fe 2 O 3 → Fe 3 O 4 → FeO Transformation

Understanding how point defects in the bulk govern redox transformations is essential for advancing hydrogen-based metal production and designing high-performance oxide materials. This study reveals the atomic-scale mechanisms driving hydrogen-induced reduction of γ-Fe 2 O 3 to Fe 3 O 4 , focusing on how bulk vacancy dynamics dictate structural evolution and reaction kinetics. A key finding is the pronounced contrast in defect behavior between the two oxides: in γ-Fe 2 O 3 , intrinsic Fe vacancies promote oxygen vacancy clustering, destabilizing the local lattice and driving nanopore formation. In contrast, Fe 3 O 4 exhibits a higher oxygen vacancy formation energy and lacks intrinsic Fe vacancies, suppressing vacancy aggregation and maintaining a dense, pore-free structure. This divergence governs distinct reduction pathways—γ-Fe 2 O 3 undergoes an interface-reaction-limited transformation confined to the γ-Fe 2 O 3 /Fe 3 O 4 boundary, while Fe 3 O 4 supports a uniform increase in oxygen vacancy concentration, enabling bulk-phase reduction to lower-oxide FeO. Integrated in situ electron microscopy and density functional theory modeling uncover a vacancy-mediated mechanism, where synergistic cation-anion vacancy dynamics steer microstructure evolution and phase progression. These insights highlight the critical role of vacancy dynamics in controlling oxide reactivity and offer a pathway toward vacancy engineering to enhance reduction kinetics in hydrogen metallurgy and to tailor porosity, reactivity, and structural resilience in oxide-based catalysts and energy materials.

Electrode and Microstructure Dependence of Oxygen Diffusion in Ferroelectric Hafnium Zirconium Oxide Thin Films

Hafnia-based ferroelectrics hold promise to reduce energy demand for computing by enabling compute-in-memory and as non-volatile memories. The ferroelectric phase in this material system is, in part, stabilized by oxygen vacancies. While oxygen vacancies may be a necessity for phase stability, they limit device endurance through diffusion and accumulation into conducting channels. Herein, it is shown that oxygen diffusion is spatially variable within individual grains of ferroelectric hafnium zirconium oxide (HZO). Using 18 O tracers and finite difference modeling, it is shown that grain boundaries and regions near electrode interfaces allow for relatively rapid oxygen diffusion, with values as much as 10 4 larger than the grain cores. Further, the selection of electrode material affects the diffusion coefficients across all microstructural regions. HZO films in contact with TiN electrodes result in more oxygen-deficient HZO films and higher oxygen diffusion coefficients. Tungsten electrodes result in fewer vacancies and lower diffusion coefficients. Diffusion activation energy differences between the HZO with the two electrodes is reconciled by differing populations of charged and uncharged oxygen vacancies. This insight into the local vacancy populations and diffusion pathways provides a platform for designing hafnia-based films, deposition processes, and integration strategies to reduce vacancy gradients and improve performance.

Ultrafast Oxygen Conduction in Sillén Oxychlorides

Oxygen ion conductors are crucial for enhancing the efficiency of various clean energy technologies, including fuel cells, solid oxide air batteries, electrolyzers, membranes, sensors, and more. In this study, a structure-similarity analysis of ≈62k oxygen-containing compounds identified the MBi 2 O 4 X (M = rare-earth element, X = halogen element) family as promising candidates for fast oxygen transport. Among these, LaBi 2 O 4 Cl is found as an ultrafast oxygen conductor with an ultralow migration barrier of 0.1 eV based on ab initio studies. Its 2D layered structure, featuring a “triple fluorite” layer, supports diffusion of both oxygen vacancies and interstitials. In addition to vacancy diffusion with a 0.1 eV barrier, ab initio studies show interstitial diffusion exhibits a modest barrier of 0.6–0.8 eV. Frenkel pairs are found to be the dominant defects in intrinsic LaBi 2 O 4 Cl, facilitating significant vacancy-mediated oxygen diffusion at elevated temperatures. With 2.8% oxygen vacancies, LaBi 2 O 4 Cl is predicted to achieve a conductivity of 0.3 S/cm at 25 °C in a single crystal. Experimental synthesis and characterization of polycrystalline LaBi 2 O 4 Cl and Sr-doped LaBi 2 O 4 Cl revealed conductivity exceeding that of YSZ and LSGM below 400 °C, with lower activation energies, achieving a total conductivity of 0.1−0.2 mS/cm at 300 °C. Here, while these results confirm its potential of fast oxygen transport, we suggest further experimental optimization of LaBi 2 O 4 Cl, including aliovalent doping and microstructure refinement, could significantly enhance its performance, facilitating fast oxygen conduction approaching room temperature.

Cation and anion topotactic transformations in cobaltite thin films leading to Ruddlesden-Popper phases.

Topotactic transformations involve structural changes between related crystal structures due to a loss or gain of material while retaining a crystallographic relationship. The perovskite oxide La0.7Sr0.3CoO3 (LSCO) is an ideal system for investigating phase transformations due to its high oxygen vacancy conductivity, relatively low oxygen vacancy formation energy, and strong coupling of the magnetic and electronic properties to the oxygen stoichiometry. While the transition between cobaltite perovskite and brownmillerite (BM) phases has been widely reported, further reduction beyond the BM phase lacks systematic studies. In this paper, we study the evolution of the physical properties of LSCO thin films upon exposure to highly reducing environments. We observe the rarely reported crystalline Ruddlesden-Popper phase, which involves the loss of both oxygen anions and cobalt cations upon annealing where the cobalt is found as isolated Co ions or Co nanoparticles. First-principles calculations confirm that the concurrent loss of oxygen and cobalt ions is thermodynamically possible through an intermediary BM phase. The strong correlation of the magnetic and electronic properties to the crystal structure highlights the potential of utilizing ion migration as a basis for emerging applications such as neuromorphic computing.

The optimal co-doping of SrFe 1-x Co x O 3-δ oxygen carriers in redox applications

Although the oxygen carrier SrCoO 3 has higher redox activity than SrFeO 3 , cobalt is both more expensive and scarcer than iron, which would hinder the wide implementation of SrCoO 3 . For these reasons, doping SrFeO 3 with Co is a potential compromise, benefitting the redox properties of SrFeO 3 , while still limiting the overall amount of cobalt being used. In this work, to find the optimal level of Co-doping, density functional theory calculations were performed to investigate the Co-doping effect on the oxygen vacancy formation and oxygen migration in SrFe 1- x Co x O 3- δ ( x = 0, 0.125, 0.25, 0.375, 0.5). Our findings show that the oxygen vacancy formation energies ( E f ) decrease with the increase of Co content resulting from the increased composition of the O-2p band at the Fermi level upon Co doping. In particular, the E f decreases nearly 0.5 eV between the x = 0 and x = 0.25 samples while E f only decreases 0.1 eV further as Co content is increased to x = 0.5. We obtain that x = 0.25 is an optimal cost/benefit ratio for Co doping, which is preserved at both low oxygen vacancy concentrations ( δ = 0.0625 values listed above) and at high concentrations of δ = 0.1875 and 0.375. Kinetically, the oxygen migration barrier has slight change upon Co doping due to the similar size of Co and Fe. Therefore, considering both redox activity and economics in reversible oxygen storage applications, x = 0.25 is suggested as the optimal Co-doping value in SrFe 1- x Co x O 3- δ .

Oxygen vacancy-induced ferroelectric effect in (111) strontium titanate single crystals controls photoelectrochemical water oxidation

Ferroelectric materials, such as tetragonal BaTiO 3 , have a permanent electric polarization that can be controlled with an external electric field, however, a ferroelectric polarization in cubic SrTiO 3 is forbidden by the higher symmetry of the lattice. Here we demonstrate that hydrogen annealed SrTiO 3−x single crystals can be polarized electrically, and that the polarization controls the activity for photoelectrochemical water oxidation, a pathway to solar hydrogen fuel. Specifically, it is observed that the anodic water oxidation photocurrent increases from 0.99 to 2.22 mA cm −2 at 1.23 V RHE (60 mW cm −2 , UV illumination) or decreases to 0.50 mA cm −2 after electric polarization of hydrogen-annealed (111) SrTiO 3−x single crystals in forward or reverse direction. The polarization also modifies the surface photovoltage signal of the material and its flat band potential, based on Mott–Schottky measurements. These observations are attributed to the formation of an electric dipole at the (111) SrTiO 3−x surface, which alters the potential drop across the depletion layer at the solid–liquid junction, and with it the electron transfer barrier. Density functional theory calculations confirm that an electric dipole can result from the movement of oxygen vacancies between the surface or sub-surface layers of SrTiO 3−x . The filling of these surface oxygen vacancies is the probable cause for the observed disappearance of the electric polarization after 24 h storage in air and 48 h in argon. Overall, this work establishes a new surface-based ferroelectric effect in SrTiO 3−x and its use for solar energy conversion during photoelectrochemical water oxidation. Because oxygen vacancy defects are common, similar electric polarization effects are to be expected in other metal oxides.

Oxygen vacancy-rich amorphous FeNi hydroxide nanoclusters as an efficient electrocatalyst for water oxidation

Here, a one-pot strategy is presented to directly synthesize amorphous Fe x Ni y hydroxide nanoclusters (denoted as ANC-Fe x Ni y , <2 nm) with oxygen vacancies induced by ionic liquids. The ANC-Fe x Ni y catalyst presents abundant catalytic sites and high intrinsic conductivity. As such, the optimized ANC-Fe 1 Ni 2 exhibits high activity in oxygen evolution reaction (OER) with a Tafel slope of 39 mV dec –1 and an overpotential of 266 mV at 10 mA cm –2 . Notably, the optimized ANC-Fe 1 Ni 2 shows an extraordinarily large mass activity of 3028 A g FeNi –1 at the overpotential of 300 mV, which is ~24-fold of commercial RuO 2 catalyst. The superior activity of these Fe x Ni y hydroxide nanoclusters is ascribed to (i) the amorphous and distorted structure with abundant oxygen vacancies, and (ii) enhanced active site density by downsizing the ANC-Fe x Ni y clusters. This strategy provides a novel route for enhancing OER electrocatalytic performance and highly encouraging for the future application of amorphous metal hydroxides in catalysis.
