The R-matrix bootstrap for the 2d O( N ) bosonic model with a boundary

The S-matrix bootstrap is extended to a 1+1d theory with O(N) symmetry and a boundary in what we call the R-matrix bootstrap since the quantity of interest is the reflection matrix (R-matrix). Given a bulk S-matrix, the space of allowed R-matrices is an infinite dimensional convex space from which we plot a two dimensional section given by a convex domain on a 2d plane. In certain cases, at the boundary of the domain, we find vertices corresponding to integrable R-matrices with no free parameters. In other cases, when there is a one-parameter family of integrable R-matrices, the whole boundary represents integrable theories. We also consider R-matrices which are analytic in an extended region beyond the physical cuts, thus forbidding poles (resonances) in that region. In certain models, this drastically reduces the allowed space of R-matrices leading to new vertices that again correspond to integrable theories. We also work out the dual problem, in particular in the case of extended analyticity, the dual function has cuts on the physical line whenever unitarity is saturated. For the periodic Yang-Baxter solution that has zero transmission, we computed the R-matrix initially using the bootstrap and then derived its previously unknown analytic form.

Form factors and spectral densities from Lightcone Conformal Truncation

We use the method of Lightcone Conformal Truncation (LCT) to obtain form factors and spectral densities of local operators $\mathcal{O}$ in $\phi^4$ theory in two dimensions. We show how to use the Hamiltonian eigenstates from LCT to obtain form factors that are matrix elements of a local operator $\mathcal{O}$ between single-particle bra and ket states, and we develop methods that significantly reduce errors resulting from the finite truncation of the Hilbert space. We extrapolate these form factors as a function of momentum to the regime where, by crossing symmetry, they are form factors of $\mathcal{O}$ between the vacuum and a two-particle asymptotic scattering state. We also compute the momentum-space time-ordered two-point functions of local operators in LCT. These converge quickly at momenta away from branch cuts, allowing us to indirectly obtain the time-ordered correlator and the spectral density at the branch cuts. We focus on the case where the local operator $\mathcal{O}$ is the trace Θ of the stress tensor.

Broken conformal window

We show that near the edges of the conformal window of supersymmetric SU(Nc) QCD, perturbed by Anomaly Mediated Supersymmetry Breaking (AMSB), chiral symmetry can be broken depending on the initial conditions of the RG flow. We do so by perturbatively expanding around Banks-Zaks fixed points and taking advantage of Seiberg duality. Interpolating between the edges of the conformal window, we predict that non-supersymmetric QCD breaks chiral symmetry up to N f ≤ 3N c − 1, while we cannot say anything definitive for N f ≥ 3N c at this moment.

Nonperturbative dynamics of (2+1)d φ 4 -theory from Hamiltonian truncation

We use Lightcone Conformal Truncation (LCT) - a version of Hamiltonian truncation - to study the nonperturbative, real-time dynamics of φ 4 -theory in 2+1 dimensions. This theory has UV divergences that need to be regulated. We review how, in a Hamiltonian framework with a total energy cutoff, renormalization is necessarily state-dependent, and UV sensitivity cannot be canceled with standard local operator counter-terms. To overcome this problem, we present a prescription for constructing the appropriate state-dependent counterterms for (2+1)d φ 4 -theory in lightcone quantization. We then use LCT with this counterterm prescription to study φ 4 -theory, focusing on the $\mathbb{Z}$ 2 symmetry-preserving phase. Specifically, we compute the spectrum as a function of the coupling and demonstrate the closing of the mass gap at a (scheme-dependent) critical coupling. We also compute Lorentz-invariant two-point functions, both at generic strong coupling and near the critical point, where we demonstrate IR universality and the vanishing of the trace of the stress tensor.

Transverse spin in the light-ray OPE

We study a product of null-integrated local operators O 1 and O 2 on the same null plane in a CFT. Such null-integrated operators transform like primaries in a fictitious d – 2 dimensional CFT in the directions transverse to the null integrals. We give a complete description of the OPE in these transverse directions. The terms with low transverse spin are light-ray operators with spin J 1 + J 2 – 1. The terms with higher transverse spin are primary descendants of light-ray operators with higher spins J 1 + J 2 – 1 + n, constructed using special conformally-invariant differential operators that appear precisely in the kinematics of the light-ray OPE. As an example, the OPE between average null energy operators contains light-ray operators with spin 3 (as described by Hofman and Maldacena), but also novel terms with spin 5, 7, 9, etc. These new terms are important for describing energy two-point correlators in non-rotationally-symmetric states, and for computing multi-point energy correlators. We check our formulas in a non-rotationally-symmetric energy correlator in N = 4 SYM, finding perfect agreement.

Towards a nonperturbative construction of the S-matrix

We present a nonperturbative recipe for directly computing the S-matrix in strongly-coupled QFTs. The method makes use of spectral data obtained in a Hamiltonian framework and can be applied to a wide range of theories, including potentially QCD. We demonstrate the utility of this prescription in the specific example of the 2+1d O(N) model at large N, using energy eigenstates computed with Hamiltonian truncation to reproduce the full 2 → 2 scattering amplitude for arbitrary (complex) center-of-mass energy.

Cascade of phase transitions in a planar Dirac material

Here we investigate a model of interacting Dirac fermions in 2 + 1 dimensions with M flavors and N colors having the U(M)×SU(N ) symmetry. In the large-N limit, we find that the U(M) symmetry is spontaneously broken in a variety of ways. In the vacuum, when the parity-breaking flavor-singlet mass is varied, the ground state undergoes a sequence of M first-order phase transitions, experiencing M + 1 phases characterized by symmetry breaking U(M)→U(M – k)×U(k) with k ϵ {0, 1, 2, · · · , M}, bearing a close resemblance to the vacuum structure of three-dimensional QCD. At finite temperature and chemical potential, a rich phase diagram with first and second-order phase transitions and tricritical points is observed. Also exotic phases with spontaneous symmetry breaking of the form as U(3)→U(1) 3 , U(4)→U(2)×U(1) 2 , and U(5)→U(2)2×U(1) exist. For a large flavor-singlet mass, the increase of the chemical potential μ brings about M consecutive first-order transitions that separate the low-μ phase diagram with vanishing fermion density from the high-μ region with a high fermion density.

Global symmetry and integral constraint on superconformal lines in four dimensions

We study properties of point-like impurities preserving flavor symmetry and supersymmetry in four-dimensional 𝒩 = 2 field theories. At large distances, such impurities are described by half-BPS superconformal line defects. By working in the AdS 2 × S 2 conformal frame, we develop a novel and simpler way of deriving the superconformal Ward identities relating the various two-point functions of flavor current multiplet operators in the presence of the defect. We use these relations to simplify a certain integrated two-point function of flavor current multiplet operators that, in Lagrangian theories, can be computed using supersymmetric localization. The simplification gives an integral constraint on the two-point function of the flavor current multiplet superconformal primary with trivial integration measure in the AdS 2 × S 2 conformal frame. We provide several consistency checks on our Ward identities.

Exact-WKB, complete resurgent structure, and mixed anomaly in quantum mechanics on S 1

We investigate the exact-WKB analysis for quantum mechanics in a periodic potential, with N minima on S 1 . We describe the Stokes graphs of a general potential problem as a network of Airy-type or degenerate Weber-type building blocks, and provide a dictionary between the two. The two formulations are equivalent, but with their own pros and cons. Exact-WKB produces the quantization condition consistent with the known conjectures and mixed anomaly. The quantization condition for the case of N-minima on the circle factorizes over the Hilbert sub-spaces labeled by discrete theta angle (or Bloch momenta), and is consistent with ’t Hooft anomaly for even N and global inconsistency for odd N. By using Delabaere-Dillinger-Pham formula, we prove that the resurgent structure is closed in these Hilbert subspaces, built on discrete theta vacua, and by a transformation, this implies that fixed topological sectors (columns of resurgence triangle) are also closed under resurgence.

D-instanton induced superpotential

We use string field theory to fix the normalization of the D-instanton corrections to the superpotential involving the moduli fields of type II string theory compactified on an orientifold of a Calabi-Yau threefold in the absence of fluxes. We focus on O(1) instantons whose only zero modes are the four bosonic modes associated with translation of the instanton in non-compact directions and a pair of fermionic zero modes associated with the two supercharges broken by the instanton. We work with a generic superconformal field theory and express our answer in terms of the spectrum of open strings on the instanton. We analyse the contribution of multi-instantons of this kind to the superpotential and argue that it vanishes when background fluxes are absent.

Investigating two-dimensional adjoint QCD on the lattice

We present our investigations of SU(N) adjoint QCD in two dimensions with one Majorana fermion on the lattice. We determine the relevant parameter range for the simulations with Wilson fermions and present results for Polyakov loop, chiral condensate, and string tension. In the theory with massive fermions, all observables we checked show qualitative agreement between numerical lattice data and theory, while the massless limit is more subtle since chiral and non-invertible symmetry of the continuum theory are explicitly broken by lattice regularization. In thermal compactification, we observe N perturbative vacua for the holonomy potential at high-T with instanton events connecting them, and a unique vacuum at low-T. At finite-N, this is a cross-over and it turns to a phase transition at large-N thermodynamic limit. In circle compactification with periodic boundary conditions, we observe a unique center-symmetric minimum at any radius. In continuum, the instantons in the thermal case carry zero modes (for even N) and indeed, in the lattice simulations, we observe that chiral condensate is dominated by instanton centers, where zero modes are localized. We present lattice results on the issue of confinement vs. screening in the theory and comment on the roles of chiral symmetry and non-invertible symmetry.

Improving modular bootstrap bounds with integrality

We propose methods that efficiently impose integrality — i.e., the condition that the coefficients of characters in the partition function must be integers — into numerical modular bootstrap. We demonstrate the method with a number of examples where it can be used to strengthen modular bootstrap results. First, we show that, with a mild extra assumption, imposing integrality improves the bound on the maximal allowed gap in dimensions of operators in theories with a U(1) c symmetry at c = 3, and reduces it to the value saturated by the SU(4) 1 WZW model point of c = 3 Narain lattices moduli space. Second, we show that our method can be used to eliminate all but a discrete set of points saturating the bound from previous Virasoro modular bootstrap results. Finally, when central charge is close to 1, we can slightly improve the upper bound on the scaling dimension gap.

Scattering amplitudes for monopoles: pairwise little group and pairwise helicity

On-shell methods are particularly suited for exploring the scattering of electrically and magnetically charged objects, for which there is no local and Lorentz invariant Lagrangian description. In this paper we show how to construct a Lorentz-invariant S-matrix for the scattering of electrically and magnetically charged particles, without ever having to refer to a Dirac string. A key ingredient is a revision of our fundamental understanding of multi-particle representations of the Poincaré group. Surprisingly, the asymptotic states for electric-magnetic scattering transform with an additional little group phase, associated with pairs of electrically and magnetically charged particles. The corresponding “pairwise helicity” is identified with the quantized “cross product” of charges, e 1 g 2 - e 2 g 1 , for every charge-monopole pair, and represents the extra angular momentum stored in the asymptotic electromagnetic field. We define a new kind of pairwise spinor-helicity variable, which serves as an additional building block for electric-magnetic scattering amplitudes. We then construct the most general 3-point S-matrix elements, as well as the full partial wave decomposition for the 2 → 2 fermion-monopole S-matrix. In particular, we derive the famous helicity flip in the lowest partial wave as a simple consequence of a generalized spin-helicity selection rule, as well as the full angular dependence for the higher partial waves. Our construction provides a significant new achievement for the on-shell program, succeeding where the Lagrangian description has so far failed.

S-matrix bootstrap in 3+1 dimensions: regularization and dual convex problem

The S-matrix bootstrap maps out the space of S-matrices allowed by analyticity, crossing, unitarity, and other constraints. For the 2 → 2 scattering matrix S 2→2 such space is an infinite dimensional convex space whose boundary can be determined by maximizing linear functionals. On the boundary interesting theories can be found, many times at vertices of the space. Here we consider 3 + 1 dimensional theories and focus on the equivalent dual convex minimization problem that provides strict upper bounds for the regularized primal problem and has interesting practical and physical advantages over the primal problem. Its variables are dual partial waves k ℓ (s) that are free variables, namely they do not have to obey any crossing, unitarity or other constraints. Nevertheless they are directly related to the partial waves f ℓ (s), for which all crossing, unitarity and symmetry properties result from the minimization. Numerically, it requires only a few dual partial waves, much as one wants to possibly match experimental results. We consider the case of scalar fields which is related to pion physics.

Black hole induced false vacuum decay: the role of greybody factors

We study false vacuum decay catalyzed by black holes. We consider a toy two-dimensional model of a scalar field with an unstable potential in the background of a dilaton black hole. A realistic black hole in four dimensions possesses the potential barrier for linear field perturbations. We model this barrier — the greybody factor — for spherically-symmetric perturbations in the toy model by adding a coupling between the scalar field and dilaton. We compute analytically the decay rate for the black hole in thermal equilibrium (Hartle-Hawking state) and for the radiating black hole in empty space (Unruh state). Our results show that, contrary to the Hartle-Hawking vacuum, the decay probability of the Unruh vacuum remains exponentially suppressed at all black hole temperatures. We argue that this result holds also in four dimensions.

Twistorial monopoles & chiral algebras

We initiate the study of how the insertion of magnetically charged states in 4d self-dual gauge theories impacts the 2d chiral algebras supported on the celestial sphere at asymptotic null infinity, from the point of view of the 4d/2d twistorial correspondence introduced by Costello and the second author. By reducing the 6d twistorial theory to a 3d holomorphic-topological theory with suitable boundary conditions, we can motivate certain non-perturbative enhancements of the celestial chiral algebra corresponding to extensions by modules arising from 3d boundary monopole operators. We also identify the insertion of 4d (non-abelian) monopoles with families of spectral flow automorphisms of the celestial chiral algebra.

Orientation reversal and the Chern-Simons natural boundary

We show that the fundamental property of preservation of relations, underlying resurgent analysis, provides a new perspective on crossing a natural boundary, an important general problem in theoretical and mathematical physics. This reveals a deeper rigidity aspect of resurgence in a quantum field theory path integral. The physical context here is the non-perturbative completion of complex Chern-Simons theory that associates to a 3-manifold a collection of q-series invariants labeled by Spinc structures, for which crossing the natural boundary corresponds to orientation reversal of the 3-manifold. Our new resurgent perspective leads to a practical numerical algorithm that generates q-series which are dual to unary q-series composed of false theta functions. Until recently, these duals were only known in a limited number of cases, essentially based on Ramanujan’s mock theta functions, and the common belief was that the duals might not even exist in the general case. Resurgence analysis identifies as primary objects Mordell integrals: up to changes of variables, they are Laplace transforms of resurgent functions. Their unique Borel summed transseries decomposition on either side of the Stokes line is simply the unique decomposition into real and imaginary parts. In turn, the latter are combinations of unary q-series in terms of q and its modular counterpart $\overset{\sim }{q}$ , and are resurgent by construction. The Mordell integral is analytic across the natural boundary of the q and $\overset{\sim }{q}$ series, and uniqueness of a similar decomposition which preserves algebraic relations on the other side of the boundary defines the unique boundary crossing of the q series. We demonstrate that this continuation can be efficiently implemented numerically. In the cases where unique mock modular identities are known, they are found by this numerical procedure, but the procedure can go well beyond the known list of identities. A particularly interesting feature of the resurgent approach is that it reveals new aspects, and is very different from other known approaches based on indefinite theta series, Appell-Lerch sums, and representation theory of logarithmic vertex operator algebras.

Drell-Yan angular lepton distributions at small x from TMD factorization.

The Drell-Yan process is studied in the framework of TMD factorization in the Sudakov region s » Q 2 » \( {q}_{\perp}^2 \) corresponding to recent LHC experiments with Q 2 of order of mass of Z-boson and transverse momentum of DY pair ~ few tens GeV. The DY hadronic tensors are expressed in terms of quark and quark-gluon TMDs with \( \frac{1}{Q^2} \) and \( \frac{1}{N_c^2} \) accuracy. It is demonstrated that in the leading order in N c the higher-twist quark-quark-gluon TMDs reduce to leading-twist TMDs due to QCD equation of motion. The resulting hadronic tensors depend on two leading-twist TMDs: f 1 responsible for total DY cross section, and Boer-Mulders function \( {h}_1^{\perp } \) . The corresponding qualitative and semi-quantitative predictions seem to agree with LHC data on five angular coefficients A 0 – A 4 of DY pair production. The remaining three coefficients A 5 – A 7 are determined by quark-quark-gluon TMDs multiplied by extra \( \frac{1}{N_c} \) so they appear to be relatively small in accordance with LHC results.
