Selection of shuttle payload data processing drivers for the data system new technology study

An investigation of all payloads in the IBM disciplines and the selection of driver payloads within each discipline are described. The driver payloads were selected on the basis of their data processing requirements. These requirements are measured by a weighting scheme. The total requirements for each discipline are estimated by use of the technology payload model. The driver selection process which was both a payload by payload comparison and a comparison of expected groupings of payloads was examined.

New technology and vehicle operation on roadways

Some concepts towards the optimum movement of vehicles on highways are presented. It is stressed that in proper perspective, the private automobile is one element of several modes of transportation. The modal mix in the long run is determined by proper land use planning, population density, and historic growth patterns. Discussion investigates the two main interacting elements of the highway in the dynamic state: the roadway and the driver operated vehicle, noting that the inefficiencies of the system are caused by the uncoordinated and disassociated actions of the two elements. Also discussed are vehicle operations on streets, highways, and freeways, on board communication, control, and guidance, systems considerations and traffic management, and benefits of optimized vehicle operations on roadways.

Large scale model tests of a new technology V/STOL concept

An ejector design concept for V/STOL aircraft, featuring a double-delta configuration with two large chordwise ejector slots adjacent to the fuselage side and a tailplane or canard for longitudinal control is examined. Large scale model tests of the concept have shown that ejector systems are capable of significant thrust augmentation at realistic supply pressures and temperatures, so that power plant size and weight can be reduced accordingly. A thrust augmentation of at least 1.75 can be achieved for the isolated ejector, not making allowance for duct and nozzle losses. Substantial reductions in velocity, temperature and noise of the lifting jet are assured due to mixing within the ejector - this lessens the severity of ground erosion and the thrust loss associated with reingestion. Consideration is also given to the effect of ground proximity, longitudinal aerodynamic characteristics, transition performance, and lateral stability.

New technologies for solar energy silicon - Cost analysis of dichlorosilane process

A reduction in the cost of silicon for solar cells is an important objective in a project concerned with the reduction of the cost of electricity produced with solar cells. The cost goal for the silicon material is about $14 per kg (1980 dollars). The process which is currently employed to produce semiconductor grade silicon from trichlorosilane is not suited for meeting this cost goal. Other processes for producing silicon are, therefore, being investigated. A description is presented of results obtained for the DCS process which involves the production of dichlorosilane as a silicon source material for solar energy silicon. Major benefits of dichlorosilane as a silicon source material include faster reaction rates for chemical vapor deposition of silicon. The DCS process involves the reaction 2SiHCl3 yields reversibly SiH2Cl2 + SiCl4. The results of a cost analysis indicate a total product cost without profit of $1.29/kg of SiH2Cl2.

Alternative Food Preservation Techniques, New Technology in Food Preparation and Appropriateness of Food Supply for the Permanently Manned Space Station

Alternative food preservation techniques are defined as unique processes and combinations of currently used processes for food preservation. Food preservation is the extension of the useful shelf-life of normally perishable foods (from harvest to final consumption) by controlling micro-organisms, enzymes, chemical changes, changes in sensory characteristics and the prevention of subsequent recontamination. The resulting products must comply with all applicable food manufacturing practice regulations and be safe. Most of the foods currently used in both space and military feeding are stabilized either by dehydration or the use of a terminal sterilization process. Other available options would be formulation to reduce water activity, the refrigeration and freezing of perishable foods, chemical addition, and physical treatment (ionizing or nonionizing radiation or mechanical action). These alternatives are considered and proposals made.

New technology implementation: Technical, economic and political factors

An analysis is presented of the process of implementing advanced manufacturing technology, based on studies of numerous organizations. This process is seen as consisting of a series of decisions with technical, economic, and political objectives. Frequency decisions involve specifications, equipment, resources/organization, and location. Problems in implementation are viewed as resulting from tradeoffs among the objectives, the tendency of decision makers to emphasize some objectives at the expense of others, and the propensity of problems to spread from one area to another. Three sets of recommendations, based on this analysis, are presented.

Computer architecture for efficient algorithmic executions in real-time systems: New technology for avionics systems and advanced space vehicles

Improvements and advances in the development of computer architecture now provide innovative technology for the recasting of traditional sequential solutions into high-performance, low-cost, parallel system to increase system performance. Research conducted in development of specialized computer architecture for the algorithmic execution of an avionics system, guidance and control problem in real time is described. A comprehensive treatment of both the hardware and software structures of a customized computer which performs real-time computation of guidance commands with updated estimates of target motion and time-to-go is presented. An optimal, real-time allocation algorithm was developed which maps the algorithmic tasks onto the processing elements. This allocation is based on the critical path analysis. The final stage is the design and development of the hardware structures suitable for the efficient execution of the allocated task graph. The processing element is designed for rapid execution of the allocated tasks. Fault tolerance is a key feature of the overall architecture. Parallel numerical integration techniques, tasks definitions, and allocation algorithms are discussed. The parallel implementation is analytically verified and the experimental results are presented. The design of the data-driven computer architecture, customized for the execution of the particular algorithm, is discussed.

Tethering a new technology

In a tethered-satellite system, two satellites travelling in different orbits are forced to circle the earth in the same time period. The lower satellite is dragged by the tether to a higher orbital speed, while the upper one tends to move higher. This generates a tension which maintains the system in a stable configuration; the tether is aligned with a radius projecting outward from the earth's center. Such a system has been demonstrated by the TSS-1 tethered satellite carried by the Space Shuttle's STS-46 mission. The dynamic and the electrodynamic behavior of the system at long tether lengths were not, however, evaluated due to system malfunctions.

Application of new technologies in the virtual library: Seminars in Turkey, Portugal, and Spain

This paper focuses on the technologies that are available today to support the concept of a virtual library. The concept of a 'virtual library' or a 'library without walls' is meant to convey the idea that information in any format should be available to the end-user from the desktop as if it were located on the local workstation. Discussed here are the background, trends, technology enablers, end-user requirements, and the NASA Access Mechanism (NAM) system, one example of how it is possible to apply existing technologies to the client server architecture to logically centralize geographically distributed applications and information.
