Graph Neural Network for Object Reconstruction in Liquid Argon Time Projection Chambers

This paper presents a graph neural network (GNN) technique for low-level reconstruction of neutrino interactions in a Liquid Argon Time Projection Chamber (LArTPC). GNNs are still a relatively novel technique, and have shown great promise for similar reconstruction tasks in the LHC. In this paper, a multihead attention message passing network is used to classify the relationship between detector hits by labelling graph edges, determining whether hits were produced by the same underlying particle, and if so, the particle type. The trained model is 84% accurate overall, and performs best on the EM shower and muon track classes. The model’s strengths and weaknesses are discussed, and plans for developing this technique further are summarised.

Variational Monte Carlo Calculations of A ≤ 4 Nuclei with an Artificial Neural-Network Correlator Ansatz

Here, the complexity of many-body quantum wave functions is a central aspect of several fields of physics and chemistry where nonperturbative interactions are prominent. Artificial neural networks (ANNs) have proven to be a flexible tool to approximate quantum many-body states in condensed matter and chemistry problems. In this work we introduce a neural-network quantum state ansatz to model the ground-state wave function of light nuclei, and approximately solve the nuclear many-body Schrodinger equation. Using efficient stochastic sampling and optimization schemes, our approach extends pioneering applications of ANNs in the field, which present exponentially scaling algorithmic complexity. We compute the binding energies and point-nucleon densities of A ≤ 4 nuclei as emerging from a leading-order pionless effective field theory Hamiltonian. We successfully benchmark the ANN wave function against more conventional parametrizations based on two- and three-body Jastrow functions, and virtually exact Green's function Monte Carlo results.

Towards 5G-Enabled Operational Technology for Process Monitoring and Network Slicing

Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) are deployed to monitor physical processes in critical cyber-enabled services like power generation. However, CPS ecosystems are typically designed without robust security. While it is important to ensure optimal performance of the Operational Technology (OT) environments, security cannot be overlooked. To modernize traditional OT services, 5G technology is being integrated. 5G technology offers low latency and high availability, making it a suitable infrastructure for managing and monitoring physical processes. How-ever, integrating 5G mechanisms into large-scale OT networks introduces new implementation and performance challenges. Therefore, this paper presents a 5G-enabled CPS architecture (5G-CPS) that describes the necessary components, services, and communication protocols and conducts feasibility study to integrate 5G technology in industrial control system networks to understand the performance merits. The 5G-CPS architecture aims to minimize implementation and operational challenges associated with integrating 5G technology into constrained OT.

BitGNN: Unlocking the Performance Potential of Binary Graph Neural Networks on GPUs

Graph Neural Networks (GNNs) have shown compelling results in many graph-based learning tasks. They are, however, time-consuming. Recent work has shown a promising direction in improving GNN speed and shrinking the size — network binarization, which binarizes network values and operations. Prior work, however, mainly focused on algorithm designs, leaving it open on how to fully materialize the performance potential. This work fills the gap by proposing techniques to best map binary GNNs and their computations to fit the nature of bit manipulations, optimizations and algorithms to maximize BSpMM kernel efficiency, and solutions to other factors influencing the end-to-end time on GPUs. Results on real-world graphs show that the proposed techniques outperform state of-the-art binary GNN implementations by 21-67× with little accuracy loss.

Designing, Constructing, and Operating an IPv6 Network at SC23: A case study in implementing the IPv6 protocol on a heterogenous network that supports the SC23 conference

IPv6 is the current version of IP, the protocol that is used to route traffic across internet connections. This standard was originally developed as a new approach to mitigate concerns about address exhaustion and allow for near infinite scalability. While this protocol has gained significant support in mobile and broadband networks, as well as being the default for networks in emerging economies, it has yet to be fully adopted as a standard deployment model. Complications include legacy devices unable to support the proposed changes, as well as potential challenges that exist between devices that may not be able to fully implement current standards or configuration norms. The SCinet volunteers who deliver advanced networking to support the SC Conference set an ambitious goal of deploying an IPv6-only network at SC23. While the necessary technology is widely available and understood, the implications of deployment to support more than 15,000 users, each with multiple devices of different operating environments and ages, presents a unique technology and policy challenge. This paper will highlight the effort put into designing, implementing, and operating this innovative IPv6-only environment.

Data for The Stem Cell-Type Transcriptome of Bioenergy Sorghum Reveals the Spatial Regulation of Secondary Cell Wall Networks

Bioenergy sorghum is a low-input, drought-resilient, deep-rooting annual crop that has high biomass yield potential enabling the sustainable production of biofuels, biopower, and bioproducts. Bioenergy sorghum’s 4-5 m stems account for ~80% of the harvested biomass. Stems accumulate high levels of sucrose that could be used to synthesize bioethanol and useful biopolymers if information about stem cell-type gene expression and regulation was available to enable engineering. To obtain this information, Laser Capture Microdissection (LCM) was used to isolate and collect transcriptome profiles from five major cell types that are present in stems of the sweet sorghum Wray. Transcriptome analysis identified genes with cell-type specific and cell-preferred expression patterns that reflect the distinct metabolic, transport, and regulatory functions of each cell type. Analysis of cell-type specific gene regulatory networks (GRNs) revealed that unique TF families contribute to distinct regulatory landscapes, where regulation is organized through various modes and identifiable network motifs. Cell-specific transcriptome data was combined with a stem developmental transcriptome dataset to identify the GRN that differentially activates the secondary cell wall (SCW) formation in stem xylem sclerenchyma and epidermal cells. The cell-type transcriptomic dataset provides a valuable source of information about the function of sorghum stem cell types and GRNs that will enable the engineering of bioenergy sorghum stems.

3-D components of a biological neural network visualized in computer generated imagery. II - Macular neural network organization

Computer-assisted reconstructions of small parts of the macular neural network show how the nerve terminals and receptive fields are organized in 3-dimensional space. This biological neural network is anatomically organized for parallel distributed processing of information. Processing appears to be more complex than in computer-based neural network, because spatiotemporal factors figure into synaptic weighting. Serial reconstruction data show anatomical arrangements which suggest that (1) assemblies of cells analyze and distribute information with inbuilt redundancy, to improve reliability; (2) feedforward/feedback loops provide the capacity for presynaptic modulation of output during processing; (3) constrained randomness in connectivities contributes to adaptability; and (4) local variations in network complexity permit differing analyses of incoming signals to take place simultaneously. The last inference suggests that there may be segregation of information flow to central stations subserving particular functions.

The design and implementation of interface units for high speed Fiber Optic Local Area Networks and Broadband Integrated Services Digital Networks are discussed. During the last years, a number of network adapters that are designed to support high speed communications have emerged. This approach to the design of a high speed network interface unit was to implement package processing functions in hardware, using VLSI technology. The VLSI hardware implementation of a buffer management unit, which is required in such architectures, is described.

Network device interface for digitally interfacing data channels to a controller via a network

A communications system and method are provided for digitally connecting a plurality of data channels, such as sensors, actuators, and subsystems, to a controller using a network bus. The network device interface interprets commands and data received from the controller and polls the data channels in accordance with these commands. Specifically, the network device interface receives digital commands and data from the controller, and based on these commands and data, communicates with the data channels to either retrieve data in the case of a sensor or send data to activate an actuator. Data retrieved from the sensor is converted into digital signals and transmitted to the controller. Network device interfaces associated with different data channels can coordinate communications with the other interfaces based on either a transition in a command message sent by the bus controller or a synchronous clock signal.

Stability Analysis of Substituted Cobaltocenium [Bis(cyclopentadienyl)cobalt(III)] Employing Chemistry-Informed Neural Networks

Cobaltocenium derivatives are promising components of the anion exchange membranes due to their excellent thermal and alkaline stability under the operating conditions of a fuel cell. Here we present an efficient modeling approach of assessing the chemical stability of substituted cobaltocenium CoCp 2 + based on the computed electronic structure enhanced by machine learning techniques. Within the aqueous environment, the positive charge of the metal cation is balanced by the hydroxide anion through formation of the CoCp 2 + OH¯ complexes, whose dissociation is studied within the implicit solvent employing density functional theory. The data set of about 118 species based on 42 substituent groups characterized by a range of electron- donating (ED) and electron-withdrawing (EW) properties is constructed and analyzed. Given 12 carefully chosen chemistry-informed descriptors of the complexes and relevant fragments, the stability of the complexes is found to strongly correlate with the energies of the highest occupied and lowest unoccupied molecular orbitals, modulated by a switching function of the Hirshfeld charge. The latter is used as a measure of the electron withdrawing-donating character of the substituents. Based on this observation from the conventional regression analysis, two fully connected, feed-forward neural network (FNN) models with different unit structures, called the chemistry-informed (CINN) and the quadratic (QNN) neural networks, are developed. Both models predict the bond dissociation energies of the cobaltocenium complexes with mean relative errors less than 5.40% and average absolute errors less than 0.94 kcal/mol. The results show the potential of QNN to efficiently capture more complex relationships. Here, the concept of incorporating the domain (chemical) knowledge/insight into the neural network structure paves the way to applications of machine learning techniques with small data sets, ultimately leading to better predictive models compared to the conventional regression analysis.

On the closedness and geometry of tensor network state sets

Tensor network states (TNS) are a powerful approach for the study of strongly correlated quantum matter. The curse of dimensionality is addressed by parametrizing the many-body state in terms of a network of partially contracted tensors. These tensors form a substantially reduced set of effective degrees of freedom. In practical algorithms, functionals like energy expectation values or overlaps are optimized over certain sets of TNS. Concerning algorithmic stability, it is important whether the considered sets are closed because, otherwise, the algorithms may approach a boundary point that is outside the TNS set and tensor elements diverge. Here we discuss the closedness and geometries of TNS sets, and we propose regularizations for optimization problems on non-closed TNS sets. We show that sets of matrix product states (MPS) with open boundary conditions, tree tensor network states, and the multiscale entanglement renormalization ansatz are always closed, whereas sets of translation-invariant MPS with periodic boundary conditions (PBC), heterogeneous MPS with PBC, and projected entangled pair states are generally not closed. The latter is done using explicit examples like the W state, states that we call two-domain states, and fine-grained versions thereof.

Neural Network Water Model Based on the MB-Pol Many-Body Potential

The MB-pol many-body potential accurately predicts many properties of water, including cluster, liquid phase, and vapor–liquid equilibrium properties, but its high computational cost can make applying it in large-scale simulations quite challenging. Here, in order to address this limitation, we developed a “deep potential” neural network (DPMD) model based on the MB-pol potential for water. We find that a DPMD model trained on mostly liquid configurations yields a good description of the bulk liquid phase but severely underpredicts vapor–liquid coexistence densities. By contrast, adding cluster configurations to the neural network training set leads to a good agreement for the vapor coexistence densities. Liquid phase densities under supercooled conditions are also represented well, even though they were not included in the training set. These results confirm that neural network models can combine accuracy and transferability if sufficient attention is given to the construction of a representative training set for the target system.

A Mixed integer linear programming‐based distributed energy management for networked microgrids considering network operational objectives and constraints

Abstract Mixed integer linear programming (MILP)–based distributed energy management for networked microgrids embedded modern distribution systems is proposed. Considering the diverse ownership of microgrids, distributed energy resources (DERs) that interface directly with utilities and responsive loads, an alternating direction method of multipliers–based distributed framework was formulated for the scheduling of networked microgrids embedded modern distribution systems by adjusting nodal price signals iteratively. In addition, to make the formulated optimization problems resolvable through more accessible and popular MILP solvers, different linearisation techniques were employed to transform the nonlinear terms into linear or mixed integer linear formats. The proposed MILP‐based distributed method preserves all participants' autonomy (e.g., microgrids, DERs that interface directly with utilities and responsive loads), while incentivising them to actively participate in the distribution system operation with price signals. The proposed method is validated with results of numerical simulation using a modern distribution system consisting of multiple networked microgrids, DERs that interface directly with utilities, as well as responsive loads.
