Absolute Inelastic Differential Electron Scattering Cross Sections for He, Xe, N2, and CO at Near Threshold Impact Energies for 90(deg) Scattering Angle

There is a great deal of need for accurate differential cross sections (DCSs) associated with electron impact excitation of various atomic and molecular species. These cross sections are needed for modeling of various plasma systems (ranging from lasers and material processing plasmas to planetary and astrophysical plasmas) and for guiding development of theoretical and computational schemes.

Search for an s -wave resonance in Li 7 just above the proton-decay threshold

Near-threshold resonances play an important role in nucleosynthesis and applied nuclear science. The study of nuclei removed from stability has greatly extended the list of resonances close to decay thresholds. The no core shell model with continuum (NCSMC) recently predicted an s-wave resonance just above the proton-decay threshold of 7 Li at an excitation energy of 10.2 MeV. This potential case of a near-threshold resonance is dependent on the quantum mechanics of the p + 6 He fragments extended into the continuum. Further, the 6 He(d,n) 7 Li* reaction was employed in an attempt to populate this resonance and search for its proton decay via the invariant-mass method. No evidence of this resonance was found. However, the data collected in this search led to better constraints on the energy and width of the isobaric analog state (IAS) with (J π ,T) = (3/2 - , 3/2) and revealed a new weak resonance just above the IAS in energy, predicted by the NCSMC as a (J π , T ) = (3/2 – , 1/2) state and potentially a part of the antianalog structure.

Threshold charmonium photoproduction with GlueX

Exclusive charmonium photoproduction near threshold opens the door for studying the gluonic properties of the proton: gluonic GPDs, anomalous contribution to the mass of the proton, gravitational form factors, the mass radius of the proton. However, such an ambitious program requires precise measurements to validate the theoretical assumptions that relate the experimental results to the above quantities. The first total cross-section measurements of near-threshold exclusive J/? photoproduction (?p?J/?p) by the GlueX collaboration sparked remarkable theoretical interest, however had limited statistics. We will report new total cross-section results based on more than a four-fold increase in statistics. Even more, due to the full acceptance of the GlueX experiment for this reaction, we will present first measurements of the differential cross-sections over the whole near-threshold kinematic region. Such measurements enable more general conclusions about the reaction mechanism when compared to a wide range of theoretical predictions including GPD calculations and models with open-charm intermediate states.

Plastic deformation - Its role in fatigue crack propagation

Recognizing the fact that the effective driving force Delta-K(eff) determines the fatigue crack propagation (FCP) rate and that the shear strain, which is considered to develop due to an occurrence of crack closure, primarily contributes to the plastic deformation, an effort is made here to elucidate the role of plastic deformation in FCP by developing a correlation between the Delta-K(eff) and the applied driving force (Delta-K) with shear strain as variable. The disparity between Delta(K)eff) and Delta-K, which apparently increases with shear strain level, persists at lower values of Delta-K. This suggests a strong influence of the degree of localized deformation on the FCP rates in the near threshold level. Hence, an improvement of FCP rates in the near threshold level should follow an effort that promotes the plastic deformation near the crack tip to a greater degree. This approach could explain the effect of the grain size, microstructure, environment, R-ratio and crack size on the near-threshold FCP rates.

Fatigue Crack Growth Threshold Testing of Metallic Rotorcraft Materials

Results are presented for a program to determine the near-threshold fatigue crack growth behavior appropriate for metallic rotorcraft alloys. Four alloys, all commonly used in the manufacture of rotorcraft, were selected for study: Aluminum alloy 7050, 4340 steel, AZ91E Magnesium, and Titanium alloy Ti-6Al-4V (beta-STOA). The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) sponsored this research to advance efforts to incorporate damage tolerance design and analysis as requirements for rotorcraft certification. Rotorcraft components are subjected to high cycle fatigue and are typically subjected to higher stresses and more stress cycles per flight hour than fixed-wing aircraft components. Fatigue lives of rotorcraft components are generally spent initiating small fatigue cracks that propagate slowly under near-threshold cracktip loading conditions. For these components, the fatigue life is very sensitive to the near-threshold characteristics of the material.

Accelerated Threshold Fatigue Crack Growth Effect-Powder Metallurgy Aluminum Alloy

Fatigue crack growth (FCG) research conducted in the near threshold regime has identified a room temperature creep crack growth damage mechanism for a fine grain powder metallurgy (PM) aluminum alloy (8009). At very low (Delta) K, an abrupt acceleration in room temperature FCG rate occurs at high stress ratio (R = K(sub min)/K(sub max)). The near threshold accelerated FCG rates are exacerbated by increased levels of K(sub max) (K(sub max) = 0.4 K(sub IC)). Detailed fractographic analysis correlates accelerated FCG with the formation of crack-tip process zone micro-void damage. Experimental results show that the near threshold and K(sub max) influenced accelerated crack growth is time and temperature dependent.

Relationship Between Unusual High-Temperature Fatigue Crack Growth Threshold Behavior in Superalloys and Sudden Failure Mode Transitions

An investigation of high temperature cyclic fatigue crack growth (FCG) threshold behavior of two advanced nickel disk alloys was conducted. The focus of the study was the unusual crossover effect in the near-threshold region of these type of alloys where conditions which produce higher crack growth rates in the Paris regime, produce higher resistance to crack growth in the near threshold regime. It was shown that this crossover effect is associated with a sudden change in the fatigue failure mode from a predominant transgranular mode in the Paris regime to fully intergranular mode in the threshold fatigue crack growth region. This type of a sudden change in the fracture mechanisms has not been previously reported and is surprising considering that intergranular failure is typically associated with faster crack growth rates and not the slow FCG rates of the near-threshold regime. By characterizing this behavior as a function of test temperature, environment and cyclic frequency, it was determined that both the crossover effect and the onset of intergranular failure are caused by environmentally driven mechanisms which have not as yet been fully identified. A plausible explanation for the observed behavior is proposed.

Threshold charmonium photoproduction with GlueX

We report the total and differential cross sections for J/ψ photoproduction obtained using the large acceptance GlueX spectrometer at the 12 GeV JLab accelerator over the full near-threshold kinematic region. The GlueX experiment uses tagged linearly-polarized photon beam from coherent Bremsstrahlung off a thin diamond. Charmonium photoproduction near threshold, under certain assumptions including gluon exchange and factorization, can be used to study important aspects of the gluon structure of the proton, such as the gluon GPD, the gravitational form factors, the mass radius of the proton, and the anomalous contribution to the proton mass. In the measured cross sections we find evidence for possible contributions beyond gluon exchange. The results are compared to a wide range of theoretical predictions including GPD calculations and models with open-charm intermediate states. Photoproduction near threshold of charmonium states with opposite-to-photon parity offer another opportunity, complementary to the J/ψ, to understand the reaction mechanism of the charmonium photoproduction. While we see some evidence for such states, comprehensive studies of such higher-mass charmonia can be done only with the proposed JLab energy upgrade. An electron beam energy of up to 22 GeV significantly increases the photon flux and polarization in the corresponding threshold regions allowing for precise cross section and polarization measurements there.

Pair production in superstrong magnetic fields

The production of electron-positron pairs by single photons in magnetic fields 10 to the twelth power G was investigated in detail for photon energies near threshold as well as for the asymptotic limit of high photon energy. The exact attenuation coefficient, which is derived and then evaluated numerically, is strongly influenced by the discrete energy states of the electron and positron. Near threshold, it exhibits a sawtooth pattern as a function of photon energy, and its value is significantly below that predicted by the asymptotic expression for the attenuation coefficient. The energy distributions of the created pair are computed numerically near threshold and analytic expressions are derived in the asymptotic limit. These results indicate that as field strength and photon energy increase, it becomes increasingly probable for the pair to divide the photon energy unequally. This effect, as well as the threshold behavior of the attenuation coefficient, could have important consequences for pulsar models.

How Can The SN-GRB Time Delay Be Measured?

The connection between SNe and GRBs, launched by SN 1998bw / GRB 980425 and clinched by SN 2003dh / GRB 030329-with the two GRBs differing by a factor of approximately 50000 in luminosity-so far suggests a rough upper limit of approximately 1-2 days for the delay between SN and GRB. Only four SNe have had nonnegligible coverage in close coincidence with the initial explosion, near the W shock breakout: two Qpe II, and two Type IC, SN 1999ex and SN 1998bw. For the latter, only a hint of the minimum between the UV maximum and the radioactivity bump served to help constrain the interval between SN and GRB. Swift GRB alerts may provide the opportunity to study many SNe through the UV breakout phase: GRB 980425 look dikes -apparently nearby, low- luminosity, soft-spectrum, long-lag GRBs-accounted for half of BATSE bursts near threshold, and may dominate the Swift yield near threshold, since it has sensitivity to lower energies than did BATSE. The SN to GRB delay timescale should be better constrained by prompt UV/optical observations alerted by these bursts. Definitive delay measurements may be obtained if long-lag bursters are truly nearby: The SNe/GRBs could emit gravitational radiation detectable by LIGO-II if robust non-axisymmetric bar instabilities develop during core collapse, and/or neutrino emission may be detectable as suggested by Meszaros et al.

Renormalization scale setting for heavy quark pair production in $e^+e^–$ annihilation near the threshold region

Heavy fermion pair production in e + e – annihilation is a fundamental process in hadron physics and is of considerable interest for various phenomena. In this paper, we will apply the principle of maximum conformality (PMC) to provide a comprehensive analysis of these processes. The PMC provides a systematic, unambiguous method for determining the renormalization scales of the QCD coupling constant for single-scale and multiple-scale applications. The resulting predictions eliminate any renormalization scheme-and-scale ambiguities, eliminate the factorial renormalon divergences, and are consistent with the requirements of the renormalization group. It is remarkable that two distinctly different scales are determined by using the PMC for heavy fermion pair production near the threshold region. One scale is the order of the fermion mass m f , which enters the hard virtual corrections, and the other scale is of order v m f , where v is the quark velocity, which enters the Coulomb rescattering amplitude. The PMC scales yield the correct physical behavior and reflect the virtuality of the propagating gluons (photons) for the QCD (QED) processes. Moreover, we demonstrate the consistency of PMC scale setting from QCD to QED. Perfect agreement between the Abelian unambiguous Gell-Mann-Low and the PMC scale-setting methods in the limit of zero number of colors is demonstrated.

Fatigue-crack propagation behavior in a high-carbon chromium SUJ2 bearing steel: Role of microstructure

High-carbon chromium martensite steels are commonly selected for bearing components in the power generation, automotive and aerospace industries where fatigue failure is a major concern. Accordingly, it is of importance to elucidate the structure-property relationships governing the fatigue properties of such bearing steels. Here, the role of microstructure in influencing the fatigue-crack propagation behavior of a high-carbon chromium SUJ2 bearing steel is examined with emphasis on three martensitic structures: (i) a fine-grained (~10 μm) structure with intragranular (but no intergranular) carbides, (ii) a coarser-grained (~25 μm) structure with discontinuous grain-boundary carbides primarily near triple junctions, and (iii) a coarse-grained (~31 μm) structure with continuous grain-boundary carbides. Although growth rates were fairly similar above ~10 -8 m/cycle, significant differences in behavior were observed at lower, near-threshold growth rates; specifically at a load ratio of 0.1, the ΔKth fatigue threshold was increased from 3.8 MPa m ½ in the fine-grained structure to 5.9 to 6.3 MPa m ½ in the two coarser-grained structures. The dominant factor governing such near-threshold behavior was found to be crack-tip shielding from roughness-induced crack closure, which was most pronounced in the coarser-grained structures; additionally, shielding from crack deflection and branching was apparent in these structures as the crack propagated through the network of intersecting martensite lamellae within the coarse grains. Compared to high-strength stainless steels and low-strength carbon steels, the fine-grained SUJ2 steel displays an exceptional combination of high strength and fatigue-crack growth resistance and is considered to be a superior structural alloy for bearing applications.

Observation of an exotic narrow doubly charmed tetraquark

Conventional, hadronic matter consists of baryons and mesons made of three quarks and a quark–antiquark pair, respectively. Here, we report the observation of a hadronic state containing four quarks in the Large Hadron Collider beauty experiment. This so-called tetraquark contains two charm quarks, a \(\overline{{{{{u}}}}}\) and a \(\overline{{{{{d}}}}}\) quark. This exotic state has a mass of approximately 3,875 MeV and manifests as a narrow peak in the mass spectrum of D 0 D 0 π + mesons just below the D *+ D 0 mass threshold. The near-threshold mass together with the narrow width reveals the resonance nature of the state.
