Scalable Nanoimprint Manufacturing of Functional Multilayer Metasurface Devices

Optical metasurfaces, consisting of subwavelength-scale meta-atom arrays, hold great promise of overcoming the fundamental limitations of conventional optics. Due to their structural complexity, metasurfaces usually require high-resolution yet slow and expensive fabrication processes. Here, using a metasurface polarimetric imaging device as an example, the photonic structures and the Nanoimprint lithography (NIL) processes are designed, creating two separate NIL molds over a patterning area of > 20 mm2 with designed Moiré alignment markers by electron-beam writing, and further subsequently integrate silicon and aluminum metasurface structures on a chip. Uniquely, the silicon and aluminum metasurfaces are fabricated by using the nanolithography and 3D pattern-transfer capabilities of NIL, respectively, achieving nanometer-scale linewidth uniformity, sub-200 nm translational overlay accuracy, and <0.017 rotational alignment error while significantly reducing fabrication complexity and surface roughness. Here, the micro-sized multilayer metasurfaces have high circular polarization extinction ratios as large as ≈20 and ≈80 in blue and red wavelengths. Further, the metasurface chip-integrated CMOS imager demonstrates high accuracy in broad-band, full Stokes parameter analysis in the visible wavelength ranges and single-shot polarimetric imaging. This novel, NIL-based, multilayered nanomanufacturing approach is applicable to the scalable production of large-area functional structures for ultra-compact optic, electronic, and quantum devices.

Multilayer Lateral Heterostructures of Van Der Waals Crystals with Sharp, Carrier–Transparent Interfaces

Abstract Research on engineered materials that integrate different 2D crystals has largely focused on two prototypical heterostructures: Vertical van der Waals stacks and lateral heterostructures of covalently stitched monolayers. Extending lateral integration to few layer or even multilayer van der Waals crystals could enable architectures that combine the superior light absorption and photonic properties of thicker crystals with close proximity to interfaces and efficient carrier separation within the layers, potentially benefiting applications such as photovoltaics. Here, the realization of multilayer heterstructures of the van der Waals semiconductors SnS and GeS with lateral interfaces spanning up to several hundred individual layers is demonstrated. Structural and chemical imaging identifies {110} interfaces that are perpendicular to the (001) layer plane and are laterally localized and sharp on a 10 nm scale across the entire thickness. Cathodoluminescence spectroscopy provides evidence for a facile transfer of electron‐hole pairs across the lateral interfaces, indicating covalent stitching with high electronic quality and a low density of recombination centers.

A multilayer network analysis of Alzheimer's disease pathogenesis: Roles for p‐tau, synaptic peptides, and physical activity

INTRODUCTION: In the aging brain, cognitive abilities emerge from the coordination of complex pathways arising from a balance between protective lifestyle and environmental factors and accumulation of neuropathologies. METHODS: As part of the Rush Memory and Aging Project (n = 440), we measured accelerometer-based actigraphy, cognitive performance, and after brain autopsy, selected reaction monitoring mass spectrometry. Multilevel network analysis was used to examine the relationships among the molecular machinery of vesicular neurotransmission, Alzheimer's disease (AD) neuropathology, cognition, and late-life physical activity. RESULTS: Synaptic peptides involved in neuronal secretory function were the most influential contributors to the multilayer network, reflecting the complex interdependencies among AD pathology, synaptic processes, and late-life cognition. Older adults with lower physical activity evidenced stronger adverse relationships among phosphorylated tau peptides, markers of synaptic integrity, and tangle pathology. DISCUSSION: Network-based approaches simultaneously model interdependent biological processes and advance understanding of the role of physical activity in age-associated cognitive impairment. Highlights: Network-based approaches simultaneously model interdependent biological processes. Secretory synaptic peptides were influential contributors to the multilayer network. Older adults with lower physical activity had adverse relationships among pathology. There was interdependence among phosphorylated tau, synaptic integrity, and tangles. Network methods elucidate the role of physical activity in cognitive impairment.

Strain–Activated Stimulated Emission from Multilayer MoSe 2 in a Narrow Operation Window

Herein, photoluminescence (PL) and fluorescence lifetime imaging (FLIM) in multilayer MoSe 2 are studied. Strain-activated stimulated emission via defect levels in multilayer MoSe 2 under laser excitation is observed, for the first time in defects of transition metal dichalcogenides. The stimulated emission is indicated by a threshold behavior of PL emission intensity with respect to laser intensity, strong polarization effects, achieved population inversion with a difference in lifetimes of two competing excited states, and localization of the stimulated emission zone as observed in FLIM. Here, the presented results not only demonstrate strain-activated stimulated emission and highlight the necessity of strain engineering in tailoring 2D layered materials for optoelectronic applications, but also shed light on the design of stimulated emission in transition metal dichalcogenide's defects to tailor for potential single-photon emission behavior.

Stress interference in multilayer additive friction stir deposition of AA6061 aluminum

Due to the multilayer deposition nature of metal additive manufacturing processes, each layer being printed experiences the state of thermokinetic and thermomechanical stress that in turn interfere with the state of thermokinetics and thermomechanical stress of subsequently deposited layers. Especially, this multilayer interference significantly affects the resultant properties of the component fabricated using solid-state additive friction stir deposition due to evolution of asymmetric state of planar stress. Due to the lack of comprehensive and suitable in situ diagnosis technique, the complex interference of inter- and multi-layer stresses during additive friction stir deposition was studied in an integrated approach of numerical simulation of fluidic state and experimental probing of stress influenced ultrasonic elastography. The uni-directional and bi-directional layer deposition configurations adopted during additive friction stir deposition result in the generation of constructive and destructive interference of the interlayer stress and hence, asymmetric and symmetric dynamic elasticity distribution respectively within the subsequent layers. With subsequent deposition of additional layers, the odd and even numbers of deposited layers generate asymmetric and nearly symmetric dynamic elasticity distributions.

Process model for multilayer slide coating of polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells

Slide coating is a precision method suitable for depositing multiple liquid-film layers simultaneously. Originally developed in the photographic film industry, it has been deployed for manufacturing of other products that benefit from multilayer coatings. One emerging application is the manufacture of polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs), which are used to produce electricity through electrochemical reactions of hydrogen and oxygen gas. The membrane-electrode assembly (MEA), in which key electrochemical reactions occur, consists of three layers that are typically deposited separately in serial fashion and then laminated together to form the three-layer MEA, i.e., three sequential steps of coat and dry. Adapting the process to simultaneous, multilayer slide coating of all three layers will save equipment cost and space while minimizing possible exposure to contaminants during transition between the steps. We are developing a three-layer slide coating model to aid the manufacturing process design of PEMFC. The model accounts for rheology of each layer, which typically exhibit shear thinning behavior. Model predictions are used to investigate simultaneous coatability of catalyst inks and to determine the best layer-by-layer ink selection.

The effects of field history on magnetic skyrmion formation in [Pt/Co/Ir] 3 multilayers

Here, we report on the formation of Néel-type magnetic bubble skyrmions at room temperature in [Pt/Co/Ir] 3 multilayered thin films after an in-plane magnetic field treatment. Polar magneto-optical Kerr Effect (p-MOKE) microscopy images show that the dendritic magnetic configurations observed after AC demagnetization evolve into magnetic bubble skyrmions after the application and subsequent removal of an in-plane magnetic field. Micromagnetic simulations were used to systematically investigate the role of the in-plane magnetic field magnitude, misalignment of the sample, and the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions (DMI) in generating bubble skyrmions during the field treatment. The simulations show that in-plane fields slightly below the saturation field are the most effective at producing skyrmions, and, furthermore, a small field angle away from the sample plane not only leads to improved skyrmion formation but also provides a means to select the skyrmion polarity where the direction of the out-of-plane component of the field is opposite to the direction of the skyrmion cores. This field treatment scheme leads to a simple and reliable way to create magnetic bubble skyrmions in multilayered thin films with DMI.

Electrodialysis through nafion membranes coated with polyelectrolyte multilayers yields >99% pure monovalent ions at high recoveries

Separation of monovalent and multivalent ions is important in processes ranging from water softening to recycling of Li. Previous studies show that cation-exchange membranes coated with multilayer polyelectrolyte films exhibit monovalent/divalent ion selectivities as high as 1000 in electrodialysis (ED) under ideal conditions with low ion recoveries. This work shows that even at 60-80% monovalent-ion recoveries, ED through Nafion membranes coated with protonated poly(allylamine)/poly(4-styrenesulfonate) multilayers can separate equimolar K + and Mg 2+ or Li + and Mg 2+ to give 99.5% pure monovalent ion. Moreover, the use of a low-volume receiving phase allows ED to concentrate the monovalent ion. Typical current efficiencies are around 70% for these separations. Selectivities appear to increase when the membrane-coating procedure uses a higher polyelectrolyte concentration in the deposition solution. Because the limiting current declines with ED time due to depletion of the monovalent ion in the source phase, use of a gradually decreasing applied current enhances current efficiency compared to ED at a constant high current. Further, the membranes also show Li + /Mg 2+ selectivities around 100 when Mg 2+ is in a 20-fold excess in the source phase at an ionic strength of 0.6 M, but selectivity decreases at even higher ionic strengths.

Recycling of a post-industrial printed multilayer plastic film containing polyurethane inks by solvent-targeted recovery and precipitation

The recently reported Solvent-Targeted Recovery And Precipitation (STRAP) strategy is used to deconstruct multilayer plastic packaging films into their constituent resins by selective polymer dissolution. To broaden the applicability of STRAP, we demonstrate the process with a flexible post-industrial printed multilayer plastic film used for food packaging. The material was a reverse printed film composed of polyethylene (PE), ethylene vinyl alcohol (EVOH), polyethylene terephthalate (PET), and polyurethane (PU)-based inks. Removal of all colors was observed with biomass-derived gamma-valerolactone (GVL) and the recovered polymers possessed comparable properties to the corresponding virgin resins. A technoeconomic analysis indicates that this STRAP process could be economically feasible at a processing capacity of 6,000 tons per year. Furthermore, the production of plastic films with materials recovered by this STRAP process can have a lower climate change impact than the production of films from virgin polymers.

Damage buildup in multilayer hexagonal boron nitride films under Ar ion bombardment

Ion irradiation can be used to modify properties of two-dimensional hexagonal boron nitride (2D-hBN). However, the behavior of multilayer 2D-hBN under ion bombardment remains essentially unexplored. Here, in this study, we systematically study the damage buildup in 40-nm-thick multilayer 2D-hBN films irradiated at room temperature with 500 keV Ar ions with doses up to 0.64 displacements per atom. Transmission electron microscopy, soft X-ray absorption spectroscopy, and Raman spectroscopy are employed to study effects of ion irradiation. Results reveal a monotonic buildup of damage that can be described by the phenomenological zero cascade overlap model. Compared to the behavior of other group-III nitride semiconductors, radiation damage in hBN is influenced by polymorphism, involving transitions between bonding configurations of hexagonal, cubic, and amorphous phases.

Alizarin Multilayers Adsorbed onto Glassy Carbon Electrodes for Electrochemical Sequestration of Manganese, Sodium, and Lithium Cations

The development of efficient methods for metal ion recovery and water remediation is critical for addressing the nation’s urgent need for secure domestic supply chains, overcoming critical materials challenges, and ensuring resilient manufacturing. Here, we present a novel approach for synthesizing stable Alizarin (Alz, 1,2-dihydroxy anthraquinone) multilayers on glassy carbon electrodes (GCEs) for electrochemical sequestration of manganese, sodium, and lithium cations. Alz-GCEs exhibit negatively shifted reduction potentials, indicating strong interactions between Alz and metal cations through metal-coupled electron transfer (MCET) mechanisms. The cation binding interactions and redox behavior of these electrodes were investigated using cyclic voltammetry (CV) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Our results demonstrate that Alz forms multilayer structures on GCEs with redox properties that are modulated by the presence of metal cations in the electrolyte. DFT calculations provide insights into the electrochemical mechanism, indicating both stepwise and concerted pathways for metal binding. The findings highlight the potential of Alz-GCEs for efficient and selective metal ion capture, which could be useful for developing sustainable materials for critical metal recovery and water remediation. This work suggests that redox-mediated organic adlayers are promising candidates for advancing electrochemical separation technologies of metal ions.

Carrier and Phonon Dynamics in Multilayer WSe 2 Captured by Extreme Ultraviolet Transient Absorption Spectroscopy

Carrier and phonon dynamics in a multilayer WSe2 film are captured by extreme ultraviolet (XUV) transient absorption (TA) spectroscopy at the W N 6,7 , W O 2,3 , and Se M 4,5 edges (30–60 eV). After the broadband optical pump pulse, the XUV probe directly reports on occupations of optically excited holes and phonon-induced band renormalizations. Here, when compared with density functional theory calculations, XUV transient absorption due to holes is identified below the W O 3 edge whereas signals at the Se M 4,5 edges are dominated by phonon dynamics. Therein, 0.4 ps hole relaxation time, 1.5 ps carrier recombination time, and 1.7 ps phonon heating time are extracted. The acquisition of hole and phonon-induced signals in a single experiment can facilitate the investigation of the correlations between electron and phonon dynamics. Furthermore, the simultaneous observation of signals from different elements can be further extended to explore photochemical processes in multilayers and alloys, thereby providing key information for their applications in electronics, photocatalysts, and spintronics.

Cast Film Production with Polyethylene Recycled from a Post-Industrial Printed Multilayer Film by Solvent-Targeted Recovery and Precipitation

The solvent-targeted recovery and precipitation (STRAP) process separates and recovers the constituent resins in multilayer plastic packaging films by selective polymer dissolution. In this work, three different experimental methods were considered to recover a polyethylene (PE) resin from a printed multilayer film by STRAP. The methods consisted of (1) a filter bag system, (2) a Soxhlet extraction, and (3) a jacketed dissolution vessel. Cast films were produced with the PE recovered from each method and were analyzed for color, mechanical properties, and number of impurities. High-quality recycled PE cast films can be produced by increasing the solvent to plastic ratio, including a filter pore size of 100 μm, and optimizing temperature control in STRAP. Furthermore, this study demonstrates that STRAP polymers can be recycled back into plastic films, enabling the potential circularity of these packaging materials.

Lateral Heterostructures of Multilayer GeS and SnS van der Waals Crystals

Engineered heterostructures derive distinct properties from materials integration and interface formation. Two-dimensional crystals have been combined to form vertical stacks and lateral heterostuctures with covalent line interfaces. While thicker vertical stacks have been realized, lateral heterostructures from multilayer van der Waals crystals, which could bring the benefits of high-quality interfaces to bulk-like layered materials, have remained much less explored. In this work, we demonstrate the integration of anisotropic layered Sn and Ge monosulfides into complex heterostructures with seamless lateral interfaces and tunable vertical design using a two-step growth process. The anisotropic lattice mismatch at the lateral interfaces between GeS and SnS is relaxed via dislocations and interfacial alloying. Nanoscale optoelectronic measurements by cathodoluminescence spectroscopy show the characteristic light emission of joined high-quality van der Waals crystals. Spectroscopy across the lateral interface indicates valley-selective luminescence in the bulk SnS component that arises due to anisotropic electron transfer across the interface. The results demonstrate the ability to realize high-quality lateral heterostructures of multilayer van der Waals crystals for diverse applications, e.g., in optoelectronics or valleytronics.

Multilayer DNA Origami with Terminal Interfaces That Are Flat and Wide-Area

DNA origami is a popular nanofabrication strategy that employs self-assembly of a long single scaffold strand, typically less than 10 kilobases in length, with hundreds of shorter staple strands into a desired shape. In particular, origami arranged as a single-layer rectangle has proven popular as flat pegboards that can display functionalities at staple-strand breakpoints, off the sides of the constituent double helices, with a ~5.3 nm rhombic-lattice spacing. For applications that demand tighter spacing, functionalities can be displayed instead on the termini of helices of multilayer DNA origami. However, pegboards with the greatest addressable surface area are often found to be the most versatile. Given the practical limitations of the length of the scaffold that can be easily realized, designs that minimize the length of each helix would have advantages for maximizing the number of helices and therefore the number of addressable pixels on each terminal surface. Here we present an architecture for multilayer DNA origami displaying flush terminal interfaces from over 200 helices that each are only 5.3 turns in length. As a result, we characterize an example using cryo-EM imaging paired with single-particle analysis for further analysis of the global structure.

Deterministic Localization of Strain-Induced Single-Photon Emitters in Multilayer GaSe

The nanoscale strain has emerged as a powerful tool for controlling single-photon emitters (SPEs) in atomically thin transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs). However, quantum emitters in monolayer TMDCs are typically unstable in ambient conditions. Multilayer TMDCs could be a solution, but they suffer from low quantum efficiency, resulting in low brightness of the SPEs. Here, we report the deterministic spatial localization of strain-induced SPEs in multilayer GaSe by nanopillar arrays. The strain-controlled quantum confinement effect introduces well-isolated sub-bandgap photoluminescence and corresponding suppression of the broad band edge photoluminescence. Clear photon-antibunching behavior is observed from the quantum dot-like GaSe sub-bandgap exciton emission at 3.5 K. The strain-dependent confinement potential and the brightness are found to be strongly correlated, suggesting a promising route for tuning and controlling SPEs. The comprehensive investigations of strain-engineered GaSe SPEs provide a solid foundation for the development of 2D devices for quantum photonic technologies.

Topological flat bands in a family of multilayer graphene moiré lattices

Moiré materials host a wealth of intertwined correlated and topological states of matter, all arising from flat electronic bands with nontrivial quantum geometry. A prominent example is the family of alternating-twist magic-angle graphene stacks, which exhibit symmetry-broken states at rational fillings of the moiré band and superconductivity close to half filling. Here, we introduce a second family of twisted graphene multilayers made up of twisted sheets of M- and N-layer Bernal-stacked graphene flakes. Calculations indicate that applying an electric displacement field isolates a flat and topological moiré conduction band that is primarily localized to a single graphene sheet below the moiré interface. Phenomenologically, the result is a striking similarity in the hierarchies of symmetry-broken phases across this family of twisted graphene multilayers. Our results show that this family of structures offers promising new opportunities for the discovery of exotic new correlated and topological phenomena, enabled by using the layer number to fine tune the flat moiré band and its screening environment.

Optical second harmonic generation in anisotropic multilayers with complete multireflection of linear and nonlinear waves using ♯SHAARP.ml package

Abstract Optical second harmonic generation (SHG) is a nonlinear optical effect widely used for nonlinear optical microscopy and laser frequency conversion. Closed-form analytical solution of the nonlinear optical responses is essential for evaluating materials whose optical properties are unknown a priori. A recent open-source code, ♯SHAARP. si , can provide such closed form solutions for crystals with arbitrary symmetries, orientations, and anisotropic properties at a single interface. However, optical components are often in the form of slabs, thin films on substrates, and multilayer heterostructures with multiple reflections of both the fundamental and up to ten different SHG waves at each interface, adding significant complexity. Many approximations have therefore been employed in the existing analytical approaches, such as slowly varying approximation, weak reflection of the nonlinear polarization, transparent medium, high crystallographic symmetry, Kleinman symmetry, easy crystal orientation along a high-symmetry direction, phase matching conditions and negligible interference among nonlinear waves, which may lead to large errors in the reported material properties. To avoid these approximations, we have developed an open-source package named Second Harmonic Analysis of Anisotropic Rotational Polarimetry in Multilayers (♯SHAARP. ml ). The reliability and accuracy are established by experimentally benchmarking with both the SHG polarimetry and Maker fringes using standard and commonly used nonlinear optical materials as well as twisted 2-dimensional heterostructures.
