Plastic homogeneity in nanoscale heterostructured binary and multicomponent metallic eutectics: An overview

Heterostructured materials comprised of relatively soft/hard disparate phases typically exhibit composite strengthening but lack plastic deformability at ambient temperatures. However, heterostructured systems comprised of nanoscale phases can simultaneously enhance yield strength and strain hardening, thereby promoting uniform distribution of plastic flow. In this review, the atomic-scale deformation mechanisms in model systems of eutectic alloys, Al-Al 2 Cu and Al-Si, refined to nanoscales via laser rapid solidification are discussed, and compared with literature on multi-component (high entropy) eutectics such as Ni-Al-Fe-based with Cr and/or Co additions. The nano-lamellar Al-Al 2 Cu structures exhibit unit defect mechanisms not reported in monolithic Al 2 Cu intermetallic: localized shear on {0 1 1} and shear-induced faults on {1 2 1} planes, constrained by closely-spaced dislocation arrays in Al confined by Al/Al 2 Cu interfaces. The unexpected plasticity mechanisms are enabled by slip continuity in nanoscale Al-Al 2 Cu eutectics associated with the orientation relationship and interface habit planes. In nano-fibrous Al-Si eutectic, tensile ductility at strength approaching 600 MPa is observed resulting from dislocation plasticity in the nano-Al channels and cracking in Si nanofibers. Molecular dynamics simulations show that Al dislocations easily cross-slip (screw) or climb (edge) along Al-Si interfaces, making slip transmission difficult. The propagation of nano-cracks is suppressed by surrounding strain hardening Al, retaining good ductility of the sample, in spite of lack of direct slip transmission. Finally, the critical unit mechanisms of slip transmission and interface-enabled plasticity observed in nanoscale eutectic binary systems can also explain the strength-ductility relationship in multi-component eutectics and homogeneously distributed plastic flow with increasing microstructural heterogeneity.

Synthesis of a planar, multicomponent catalytic surface of Na 2 CO 3 /MnO

Here, O 2 adsorption on MnO(100) precovered with sodium (Na) multilayers was investigated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and temperature programmed desorption (TPD). Deposition of Na multilayers leads to a first monolayer of oxidic Na followed by metallic Na island growth. XPS results for the oxidation of the metallic Na islands indicate an incomplete oxidation of Na at 125 K. Oxidation at 350 K completely oxidizes the metallic islands producing a mixture of Na 2 O and Na 2 O 2 . Thermal evolution of the oxidation products was examined. After oxidation at 350 K and flashing to 750 K, Na 2 O and Na 2 O 2 are the primary oxides on MnO(100). After flashing to 850 K, a solid state reaction of Na 2 O 2 /Na 2 O and the MnO(100) substrate forms a NaMnO 2 -like surface compound which decomposes above 850 K. Oxygen exchange between CO 2 and Na oxides is observed. The strong interaction between CO 2 and Na oxide islands forms Na 2 CO 3 on MnO(100). Heating the Na 2 CO 3 covered MnO(100) surface to 600 K for 10 min drives oxidic Na in the first monolayer into the MnO subsurface, and produces a surface exposing islands of Na 2 CO 3 on MnO(100).

Distinguishing Desirable and Undesirable Reactions in Multicomponent Systems for Redox Activation of the Uranyl Ion

Although it has been established that covalent functionalization of the U–O bonds in the uranyl dication (UO 2 2+ ) generally requires use of strong reductants and electrophiles, little work has examined how interactions between the individual reaction components could affect final outcomes in solution. Here, the patterns of such reactivity have been studied in a UO 2 2+ -containing model system supported by a workhorse pentadentate ligand, 2,2′-[(methylimino)bis(2,1-ethanediylnitrilomethylidyne)]bis-phenol. Oxo activation and functionalization have been tested with (i) electrochemical and chemical reduction, and (ii) coordinating and noncoordinating solvents. In acetonitrile, uranyl reduction was achieved cleanly, but treatment of the reduced species with tris(pentafluorophenyl)borane (BCF) resulted in a mixture of products arising from direct electron transfer to BCF. In dichloromethane (CH 2 Cl 2 ), electrochemical reduction of uranyl was achieved cleanly, but clean chemical reactivity was inaccessible. Despite these challenges, one trinuclear and oxo-deficient uranium-containing product was crystallized from CH 2 Cl 2 solution and characterized; thus, desirable electrophilic reactivity can proceed to some degree in CH 2 Cl 2 with BCF. Computational studies were used to investigate the properties of the trinuclear uranium product and the changes that could be inducible by further reduction. Here, taken together, the reactivity patterns identified here could inform design of improved systems for actinyl oxo functionalization.

Multicomponent Phase Separation in Ternary Mixture Ionic Liquid Electrolytes

We investigate the phase behavior of ternary mixtures of ionic liquid, organic solvent, and lithium salt by molecular dynamics simulations. We find that at room temperature, the electrolyte separates into distinct phases with specific compositions; an ion-rich domain that contains a fraction of solvent molecules and a second domain of pure solvent. Here, the phase separation is shown to be entropy-driven and is independent of lithium salt concentration. Phase separation is only observed at microsecond time scales and greatly affects the transport properties of the electrolyte.
