Supporting Information for manuscript: “A latitudinal gradient in S/G lignin monomer ratio driven by laccase in natural poplar variants”

Lignin composition plays a crucial role in plant structural integrity and environmental adaptation. However, the genetic and molecular mechanisms underlying natural variation in lignin composition remain poorly understood. This study investigates the syringyl-to-guaiacyl (S/G) lignin monomer ratio across a natural population of Populus trichocarpa spanning a latitudinal gradient along the Northwest coast of North America. By integrating biochemical, genomic, and geographic analysis, we identify key gene variants associated with S/G ratio differences. These datasets provide valuable insights into the evolutionary and functional genomics of lignin composition and serve as a resource for developing poplar variants optimized for forestry and bioenergy applications.

High Char Yield and Flowable Preceramic Resin Enabled with the Monomer Functionalized SiC Particle

Ceramic matrix composites (CMCs) are used in diverse high temperature applications; however, manufacturing CMCs is highly time consuming and costly. We address this challenge by introducing a methodology for fabricating CMCs using an innovative composite preceramic resin. This composite resin contains 40% mass loading of SiC particles, which are chemically functionalized with a resin monomer. The functionalization facilitates a homogenous dispersion of SiC particles within the resin matrix, resulting in high char yield (83.6%) and enhanced impregnation efficiency through reduced melt viscosity, ~10 Pa.s for relevant shear rates. This breakthrough represents a significant stride towards developing a more economically viable and efficient manufacturing process for CMCs.

Re-routing of Sugar Catabolism Provides a Better Insight Into Fungal Flexibility in Using Plant Biomass-Derived Monomers as Substrates

The filamentous ascomycete Aspergillus niger has received increasing interest as a cell factory, being able to efficiently degrade plant cell wall polysaccharides as well as having an extensive metabolism to convert the released monosaccharides into value added compounds. The pentoses D-xylose and L-arabinose are the most abundant monosaccharides in plant biomass after the hexose D-glucose, being major constituents of xylan, pectin and xyloglucan. In this study, the influence of selected pentose catabolic pathway (PCP) deletion strains on growth on plant biomass and re-routing of sugar catabolism was addressed to gain a better understanding of the flexibility of this fungus in using plant biomass-derived monomers. The transcriptome, metabolome and proteome response of three PCP mutant strains, Δ larA Δ xyrA Δ xyrB , Δ ladA Δ xdhA Δ sdhA and Δ xkiA , grown on wheat bran (WB) and sugar beet pulp (SBP), was evaluated. Our results showed that despite the absolute impact of these PCP mutations on pure pentose sugars, they are not as critical for growth of A. niger on more complex biomass substrates, such as WB and SBP. However, significant phenotypic variation was observed between the two biomass substrates, but also between the different PCP mutants. This shows that the high sugar heterogeneity of these substrates in combination with the high complexity and adaptability of the fungal sugar metabolism allow for activation of alternative strategies to support growth.

Combining Reclaimed PET with Bio-Based Monomers Enables Plastics Upcycling

Less than 30% of PET plastic is recycled in the United States. The low reclamation rate may be due to mechanical recycling accounting for the majority of commercial PET recycling. Mechanical recycling yields a lower-quality recycled plastic than the process of chemically recycling back to the monomer phase, which can be energetically and economically expensive. In this work, recently published in Joule, reclaimed PET bottles are chemically recycled and converted into higher-value fiberglass-reinforced plastics (FRPs).This presentation will focus on the supply-chain level energy and greenhouse gas emissions intensities associated with this novel upcycling route. The Materials Flows through Industry supply chain analysis tool, developed at NREL, is used to estimate these impacts. Depending on the extent and speed of adoption, this strategy for plastic upcycling could lead to significant energy usage and emissions reductions over the traditional FRP supply chain. Overall, this approach may provide an economic incentive for plastics recycling and renewable feedstock use through the creation of higher-value FRPs.

Group transfer polymerization for the production of functional monomers

The present invention provides efficient processes for preparing brush polymers. In general, the process comprises three distinct reaction steps utilizing two separate catalysts. In the first step, the initiating compound comprising norbornene is contacted with a silane in the presence of a catalyst, thereby forming a silated intermediate. This silated intermediate is then contacted with a monomer in the presence of a catalyst via Group Transfer Polymerization (GTP). The resulting compound from GTP is contacted with a ring opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) catalyst to prepare the brush polymer. Surprisingly, the brush polymers obtained from the above process are accessed in an efficient and rapid GTP methodology as compared to prior methods.

Regio- and Stereoselective Lactone Polymerization: Divergent Effect of Catalyst Modification and Monomer Structure

Selective ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of chiral lactones enables access to biodegradable polyesters with precisely controlled microstructures. Here, combined DFT modeling and experimental validation elucidate how fine-tuning of enantiopure SalBinam aluminum catalysts (through introduction of bromine atoms and tert-butyl groups, respectively, in ortho- and para-positions) modulates regio- and stereocontrol in the ROP of methyl glycolide (MeG) and lactide (LA). Computations reveal that regioselectivity in MeG polymerization arises mainly from steric repulsion, with a small contribution from weak stabilizing C-H···Br interactions that favor ring-opening at the glycolic site, consistent with the experimentally enhanced regioselectivity for (R)-MeG. In contrast, the same steric congestion at the ligand’s ortho positions destabilizes the key transition states in rac-LA polymerization, reducing the calculated stereoselectivity. Experiments confirm the predicted loss of stereocontrol, yielding nearly atactic PLA under standard conditions. Extension of the computational framework to rac-MeG polymerization promoted by racemic catalyst identified a low-barrier, stepwise polymer chain exchange pathway that rationalizes the experimentally observed syndiotacticity of poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid).

Backbone-Photodegradable Polymers by Incorporating Acylsilane Monomers via Ring-Opening Metathesis Polymerization

Materials capable of degradation upon exposure to light hold promise in a diverse range of applications including biomedical devices and smart coatings. Despite the rapid access to macromolecules with diverse compositions and architectures enabled by ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP), a general strategy to introduce facile photodegradability into these polymers is lacking. Here, we report copolymers synthesized via ROMP that can be degraded by cleaving the backbone in both solution and solid states under irradiation with a 52 W, 390 nm Kessil LED to generate heterotelechelic low-molecular-weight fragments. To the best of our knowledge, this work represents the first instance of the incorporation of acylsilanes into a polymer backbone. Mechanistic investigation of the degradation process supports the intermediacy of an α-siloxy carbene, formed via a 1,2-photo Brook rearrangement, which undergoes insertion into water followed by cleavage of the resulting hemiacetal.
