Finite width effects in nonleptonic D -meson decays

Many analyses of two-body nonleptonic decays of D -mesons rely on flavor S U ( 3 ) symmetry relations and fits of experimental data of decays rates to extract the universal transition amplitudes. Such fits assume that the final state mesons are well-defined asymptotic states of QCD. We develop a technique to take into account the finite width effects of the final state mesons and study their effects on the extracted values of transition amplitudes. Search for D 0 meson decays to π + π − e + e − and K + K − e + e − final states

A search for D 0 meson decays to the π + π − e + e − and K + K − e + e − final states is reported using a sample of proton-proton collisions collected by the LHCb experiment at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 6 fb − 1 . The decay D 0 → π + π − e + e − is observed for the first time when requiring that the two electrons are consistent with coming from the decay of a ϕ or ρ 0 / ω meson. The corresponding branching fractions are measured relative to the D 0 → K − π − [ e + e − ] ρ 0 / ω decay, where the two electrons are consistent with coming from the decay of a ρ 0 or ω meson. No evidence is found for the D 0 → K + K − e + e − decay and world-best limits are set on its branching fraction. The results are compared to, and found to be consistent with, the branching fractions of the D 0 → π + π − μ + μ − and D 0 → K + K − μ + μ − decays recently measured by LHCb and confirm lepton universality at the current precision. © 2025 CERN, for the LHCb Collaboration 2025 CERN

Production of \(\omega \) mesons in pp collisions at \(\mathbf {\sqrt{s}=7\,\text {TeV}}\)

The invariant differential cross section of inclusive \(\omega (782)\) meson production at midrapidity ( \(|y|<0.5\) ) in pp collisions at \(\sqrt{s}=7\,\hbox {TeV}\) was measured with the ALICE detector at the LHC over a transverse momentum range of \(2< p_{\mathrm {T}}< 17\,\hbox {GeV}/c\) . The \(\omega \) meson was reconstructed via its \(\omega \rightarrow \pi ^+\pi ^-\pi ^0\) decay channel. The measured \(\omega \) production cross section is compared to various calculations: PYTHIA 8.2 Monash 2013 describes the data, while PYTHIA 8.2 Tune 4C overestimates the data by about 50%. A recent NLO calculation, which includes a model describing the fragmentation of the whole vector-meson nonet, describes the data within uncertainties below \(6\,\hbox {GeV}/c\) , while it overestimates the data by up to 50% for higher \(p_{\mathrm {T}}\) . The \(\omega /\pi ^0\) ratio is in agreement with previous measurements at lower collision energies and the PYTHIA calculations. In addition, the measurement is compatible with transverse mass scaling within the measured \(p_{\mathrm {T}}\) range and the ratio is constant with \(C^{\omega /\pi ^{0}}= 0.67 \pm 0.03 \text {~(stat)~} \pm 0.04 \text {~(sys)~}\) above a transverse momentum of \(2.5\,\hbox {GeV}/c\) .

Spin density matrix elements in exclusive $\rho ^0$ meson muoproduction

We report on a measurement of Spin Density Matrix Elements (SDMEs) in hard exclusive $\rho ^0$ meson muoproduction at COMPASS using 160 GeV/c polarised μ + and μ – beams impinging on a liquid hydrogen target. The measurement covers the kinematic range 5.0 GeV/c 2 < W < 17.0 GeV/c 2 , 1.0 (GeV/c) 2 < $\mathrm{Q}$ 2 < 10.0 (GeV/c) 2 and 0.01 (GeV/c) 2 < $p_{\textrm{T}}^2$ < 0.5 (GeV/c) 2 . Here, W denotes the mass of the final hadronic system, $\mathrm{Q}$ 2 the virtuality of the exchanged photon, and $p_{\textrm{T}}$ the transverse momentum of the $\rho ^0$ meson with respect to the virtual-photon direction. The measured non-zero SDMEs for the transitions of transversely polarised virtual photons to longitudinally polarised vector mesons ($\gamma ^*_T \rightarrow V^{ }_L$) indicate a violation of s-channel helicity conservation. Additionally, we observe a dominant contribution of natural-parity-exchange transitions and a very small contribution of unnatural-parity-exchange transitions, which is compatible with zero within experimental uncertainties. The results provide important input for modelling Generalised Parton Distributions (GPDs). In particular, they may allow one to evaluate in a model-dependent way the role of parton helicity-flip GPDs in exclusive $\rho ^0$ production.

$K^0_S$ meson production in inelastic p+p interactions at 31, 40 and 80 $\text {Ge}\hspace{-1.00006pt}\text {V}\!/\!c$ beam momentum measured by NA61$/$SHINE at the CERN SPS

The yields of $K^0_S$ mesons have been measured in inelastic p+p interactions at incident projectile momenta of 31, 40 and 80 $\text {Ge}\hspace{-1.00006pt}\text {V}\!/\!c$ ($\sqrt{s_{NN}}=7.7, 8.8$ and 12.3 $\text {Ge}\hspace{-1.00006pt}\text {V}$, respectively). The data were recorded by the NA61$/$SHINE spectrometer at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron and the $K^0_S$ mesons identified via their decays into $\pi ^{+} \pi ^{-}$ pairs. Double-differential distributions are presented as function of transverse momentum and rapidity. The mean multiplicities of $K^0_S$ mesons were determined to be $(5.95 \pm 0.19 (stat) \pm 0.30 (sys)) \times 10^{-2}$ at 31 $\text {Ge}\hspace{-1.00006pt}\text {V}\!/\!c$, $(7.61 \pm 0.13 (stat) \pm 0.43 (sys)) \times 10^{-2}$ at 40 $\text {Ge}\hspace{-1.00006pt}\text {V}\!/\!c$ and $(11.58 \pm 0.12 (stat) \pm 0.55 (sys)) \times 10^{-2}$ at 80 $\text {Ge}\hspace{-1.00006pt}\text {V}\!/\!c$. The results on $K^{0}_{S}$ production are compared with the production of charged kaons in corresponding reactions and with model calculations (Epos1.99, SMASH 2.0 and PHSD) as well as with published data from other experiments.

Precision measurement of the B0 meson lifetime using B0→J/ψK∗0 decays with the ATLAS detector

A measurement of the B0$$B^{0}$$ meson lifetime using B0→J/ψK∗0$$ B^{0} \rightarrow J/\psi K^{*0} $$ decays in data from 13 TeV$$\text {TeV}$$ proton–proton collisions with an integrated luminosity of 140fb-1$$ 140~\mathrm {fb^{-1}} $$ recorded by the ATLAS detector at the LHC is presented. The measured effective lifetime is τ=1.5053±0.0012(stat.)±0.0035(syst.)ps.$$ \tau = 1.5053\pm 0.0012~\mathrm {(stat.)} \pm 0.0035~\mathrm {(syst.)~ps}. $$The average decay width extracted from the effective lifetime, using parameters from external sources, is Γd=0.6639±0.0005(stat.)±0.0016(syst.)±0.0038(ext.)ps-1,$$\begin{aligned} \Gamma _d = 0.6639\pm 0.0005~\mathrm {(stat.)} \pm 0.0016~\mathrm {(syst.)}\\ \pm 0.0038~\text {(ext.)} \text {~ps}^{-1}, \end{aligned}$$where the uncertainties are statistical, systematic and from external sources. The earlier ATLAS measurement of Γs$$\Gamma _s$$ in the Bs0→J/ψϕ$$B^{0}_{s} \rightarrow J/\psi \phi $$ decay was used to derive a value for the ratio of the average decay widths Γd$$\Gamma _d$$ and Γs$$\Gamma _s$$ for B0$$B^{0} $$ and Bs0$$B^{0}_{s} $$ mesons respectively, of ΓdΓs=0.9905±0.0022(stat.)±0.0036(syst.)±0.0057(ext.).$$ \frac{\Gamma _d }{\Gamma _s } = 0.9905\pm 0.0022~\text {(stat.)} \pm 0.0036~\text {(syst.)} \pm 0.0057~\text {(ext.)}. $$The measured lifetime, average decay width and decay width ratio are in agreement with theoretical predictions and with measurements by other experiments. Light Meson Spectroscopy with GlueX and Beyond

The GlueX experiment at Jefferson Lab was specifically designed for precision studies of the light-meson spectrum. For this purpose, a photon beam with energies up to 12 GeV is directed onto a liquid hydrogen target contained within a hermetic detector with near-complete neutral and charged particle coverage. Linear polarization of the photon beam with a maximum around 9 GeV provides additional information about the production process. In 2018, the experiment completed its first phase, recording data with a total integrated luminosity above 400 pb?1. We highlight a selection of results from this world-leading data set with emphasis on the search for light hybrid mesons. In the mean time, the detector underwent significant upgrades and is currently recording data with an even higher luminosity. The future plans of the GlueX experiment to explore the meson spectrum with unprecedented precision are summarized.

Measuring Muon Antineutrino Charged-Current Interactions Without Mesons in the Final State, in the NOvA Near Detector

NOvA is a long-baseline neutrino experiment based at Fermilab in the US, with the primary aim of measuring neutrino and antineutrino oscillations. This will enhance our understanding of electroweak interactions by measuring the neutrino mixing angles, CP-violating phase and neutrino mass ordering. To measure these oscillations, we first need to have a deep understanding of how neutrinos and antineutrinos interact with matter. Antineutrino interaction cross sections are, at present, particularly poorly constrained, and processes such as meson exchange currents are not well understood in the antineutrino sector. This analysis will develop a cross-section measurement of muon antineutrino interactions without mesons (e.g. pions or kaons) in the final state, in the NOvA near detector. A high-statistics, high-purity sample is obtained through a cut-based selection process implementing machine learning techniques. The sample is dominated by quasi-elastic and meson exchange current interactions which are sensitive to nuclear effects such as Final-State Interactions. The cross section will be extracted as a function of the incoming neutrino energy and the kinematics of the outgoing particles.

Connection between variations of the atmosphere temperature profile and variations of the meson component intensity

The influence of temperature effects on intensity variations of the cosmic ray meson component were studied. The connection between the temperature variation delta T and the intensity variation delta I was established by using the temperature coefficient density technique. To realize how many devices are needed on the Earth for predicting the temperature variation of the atmosphere profile with a reasonable accuracy, IO isobaric levels and IO were calculated. The set of initial elements of the cosmic ray mesons are varied and it is shown that the matrix of the coefficients B sub ij is rather sensitive to their choice. It is found that if for the calculations of the atmospheric temperature variations the model is used, the number of meson components, essentially exceeding 3, should be considered.

Hadron spectroscopy of pseudoscalar and vector meson photoproduction using linearly polarised photons at CLAS

The field of hadron spectroscopy is informed by experiments which study excited states of the nucleon by detecting the decay products following excitation with a hadronic, leptonic or electromagnetic probe. Experiments using a polarised beam of photons provide an important contribution to the world data. This thesis describes the analysis of data from one such experiment, the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer at Jefferson Laboratory, Virginia, USA. In the experiment, an incident beam of electrons passes through a diamond radiator producing a linearly polarised photon beam of energy from 1.1 to 2.1 GeV on a liquid hydrogen target. The analysis method and results for two reaction channels are presented. In the first analysis, the polarisation observables {?, P, T, Ox, Oz} for the reaction ??? p ? K0 S ?+ are extracted simultaneously using likelihood sampling with Markov-Chain Monte-Carlo. The results are presented as angular distributions (cos ?K0S) for bins in photon energy E? for a total of 21 bins. The values extracted for T , Ox and Oz are a first measurement of these quantities for this reaction and the beam asymmetry (?) measurement supplements the one previous measurement for this quantity and extends the energy range over which it has been extracted. The measurement of the recoil polarisation, P, is consistent with previous measurements. In a second analysis, the spin density matrix elements (SDMEs) for ? p ? p ? are extracted using similar analysis techniques. The results are presented as angular distributions (cos ?? ) for bins in photon energy E? for a total of 24 bins. This work is the first to extract all nine SDMEs for the full angular range of the ? meson production. A comparison is made to the predictions of the Vector Meson Dominance (VMD) model and the results provide evidence for contributing processes other than VMD, particularly at more backward angles of the ? meson production. The data also indicate non-helicity conserving process in both the s-channel and the t-channel. The results from the first analysis have been passed to the Juelich-Bonn theory group and the effect of including the new data within their dynamical coupled channel model is described. Several nucleon resonances are affected and the impact on the pole positions, widths and photon decay amplitudes of the affected resonances is described.

Tomography of the rho meson in the QCD instanton vacuum: Transverse momentum dependent parton distribution functions

We analyze the rho meson unpolarized and polarized transverse momentum dependent parton distribution functions (TMDPDFs) in the instanton liquid model (ILM). The corresponding TMDs in ILM are approximated by a constituent quark beam function in the leading Fock state multiplied by a rapidity-dependent factor resulting from the staple-shaped Wilson lines, for fixed longitudinal momentum, transverse separation, and rapidity. At the resolution of the ILM, all of the rho meson TMDs are symmetric in parton 𝑥 for fixed transverse momentum, and Gaussian-like in the transverse momentum for fixed parton 𝑥. The latter is a direct consequence of the profiling of the quark zero modes in the ILM. The evolved TMDs at higher rapidity using the Collins-Soper kernel, and higher resolution using the renormalization group, show substantial skewness towards low parton 𝑥.

Recent progress on in-medium properties of heavy mesons from finite-temperature EFTs

Mesons with heavy flavor content are an exceptional probe of the hot QCD medium produced in heavy-ion collisions. In the past few years, significant progress has been made toward describing the modification of the properties of heavy mesons in the hadronic phase at finite temperature. Ground-state and excited-state thermal spectral properties can be computed within a self-consistent many-body approach that employs appropriate hadron-hadron effective interactions, providing a unique opportunity to confront hadronic Effective Field Theory predictions with recent and forthcoming lattice QCD simulations and experimental data. In this article, we revisit the application of the imaginary-time formalism to extend the calculation of unitarized scattering amplitudes from the vacuum to finite temperature. These methods allow us to obtain the ground-state thermal spectral functions. The thermal properties of the excited states that are dynamically generated within the molecular picture are also directly accessible. We present here the results of this approach for the open-charm and open-bottom sectors. We also analyze how the heavy-flavor transport properties, which are strongly correlated to experimental observables in heavy-ion collisions, are modified in hot matter. In particular, transport coefficients can be computed using an off-shell kinetic theory that is fully consistent with the effective theory describing the scattering processes. The results of this procedure for both charm and bottom transport coefficients are briefly discussed.

Beyond leading twist: 𝜌 meson decay constants and distribution amplitudes in a self-consistent light-front quark model

In this study, we present a comprehensive analysis of decay constants and chiral-even and chiral-odd distribution amplitudes (DAs) up to twist 4 for the 𝜌 meson in the standard light-front quark model (LFQM) based on the Bakamjian-Thomas (BT) construction. For the 𝜌 meson, which possesses both longitudinal (ℎ=0) and transverse (ℎ =±1) polarizations, two types of decay constants, 𝑓$^{∥}_{𝜌}$ and 𝑓$^{⊥}_{𝜌}$, arises accordingly. We demonstrate that these decay constants can be self-consistently extracted from both local (𝑧𝜇 =0) and nonlocal (𝑧𝜇 ≠0) matrix elements ⟨0⁢|$\overline{𝑞}$(𝑧)⁢Γ⁢𝑞⁡(−𝑧)|⁢𝜌⁡(𝑃,ℎ)⟩, with Γ=(𝛾 𝜇 ,𝜎 𝜇⁢𝜈 ,𝛾 𝜇 ⁢𝛾 5 ,𝟏), in a manner independent of current components, polarizations, and reference frames. In particular, we emphasize the role of nonlocal matrix elements involving axial-vector and scalar currents, where mixing between 𝑓$^{∥}_{𝜌}$ and 𝑓$^{⊥}_{𝜌}$ occurs. We show that this mixing is consistently resolved through the BT construction, ensuring the proper extraction of these decay constants.

First Exclusive Reconstruction of the 𝐵* + , 𝐵* 0 , and 𝐵$^{*0}_{𝑠}$ Mesons and Precise Measurement of Their Masses

Using proton-proton collision data collected by the CMS experiment at √𝑠 = 13 TeV in 2016–2018, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 140 fb −1 , the first full reconstruction of the three vector 𝐵 meson states, 𝐵* + , 𝐵* 0 , and 𝐵$^{*0}_{𝑠}$, is performed. The mass differences between the excited mesons and their corresponding ground states are measured to be 𝑚⁡(𝐵* + )−𝑚⁡(𝐵 + ) = 45.277 ± 0.039 ± 0.027 MeV, 𝑚⁡(𝐵 *0 )−𝑚⁡(𝐵 0 ) = 45.471 ± 0.056 ± 0.028 MeV, and 𝑚⁡(𝐵$^{*0}_{𝑠}$)−𝑚⁡(𝐵$^{0}_{𝑠}$) = 49.407 ± 0.132 ± 0.041 MeV, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second are systematic. These results improve on the precision of previous measurements by an order of magnitude.

Photoproduction of η mesons off the proton for 1.2 < E γ < 4.7GeV using CLAS at Jefferson Laboratory

Photoproduction cross sections are reported for the reaction $\gamma p\to p\eta$ using energy-tagged photons and the CLAS spectrometer at Jefferson Laboratory. The $\eta$ mesons are detected in their dominant charged decay mode, $\eta\to \pi^+\pi^-\pi^0$, and results on differential cross sections are presented for incident photon energies between 1.2 and 4.7 GeV. These new $\eta$ photoproduction data are consistent with earlier CLAS results but extend the energy range beyond the nucleon resonance region into the Regge regime. The normalized angular distributions are also compared with the experimental results from several other experiments, and with predictions of $\eta$ MAID\,2018 and the latest solution of the Bonn-Gatchina coupled-channel analysis. Differential cross sections $d\sigma/dt$ are presented for incident photon energies $E_\gamma > 2.9$ GeV ($W > 2.5$ GeV), and compared with predictions which are based on Regge trajectories exchange in the $t$-channel (Regge models). Overall, the data confirm the expected dominance of $\rho$, $\omega$ vector-meson exchange in an analysis by the Joint Physics Analysis Center.

Test of Light-Lepton Universality in the Rates of Inclusive Semileptonic B-Meson Decays at Belle II

In events where the partner B meson is fully reconstructed, we use fits to the lepton momentum spectra above 1.3 GeV / c to obtain R ( X e / μ ) = 1.007 ± 0.009 ( stat ) ± 0.019 ( syst ) , which is the most precise lepton-universality test of its kind and agrees with the standard-model expectation.
