Observation of Chiral Magnon Band Splitting in Altermagnetic Hematite

Altermagnets, a new frontier for spintronics, represent a distinct magnet class with nonrelativisticsplitting of both electronic and chiral magnon bands, yet experimental verification of their unique magnondynamics remains scarce. In this Letter, inelastic neutron scattering experiments on α-Fe 2 O 3 reveal a clearmagnon band splitting about 3 meV at ∼100 meV. Here, we trace the origin of this splitting to the alternatingexchange interactions between the 13th nearest neighbors, as supported by first-principles calculations, andconfirm that the magnons have chiral splits by theoretical modeling. This definitive characterization ofchiral magnons in hematite provides the fundamental insight needed to design and control spin transport innovel spintronic applications.

Searching for axion dark matter with array-scalable single magnon detectors

We introduce an array-scalable, magnon-based detector to search for the spin-dependent interactions of electron-coupled axion dark matter with mass in the 1−100 μ⁢eV range. These axions can excite single magnons in magnetic targets, such as yttrium iron garnet (YIG) spheres, which are subsequently sensed by the detector. In our concept, this sensing is implemented by coupling the magnons in the YIG spheres to magnetic-field-resilient single-electron charge-qubits, whose state is then interrogated with a quantum nondemolition measurement. Using standard superconducting fabrication techniques, it is possible to integrate many YIG sphere-qubit sensors, forming a large detector array. We outline the detector design and operation for our concept, and determine its sensitivity to axion dark matter. We find that using available technology can already exceed the sensitivity of previous ferromagnetic haloscopes, and further improvements in performance would search for electron-coupled axion dark matter in unexplored parameter space.

Field-dependent magnons in the honeycomb antiferromagnet CoTiO 3

We report field-dependent high-resolution inelastic neutron scattering (INS) measurements on the honeycomb lattice magnet, CoTiO 3 , to study the evolution of its magnon excitations across a spin reorientation transition driven by an in-plane magnetic field. By carrying out elastic neutron scattering in a magnetic field, we show that the sample transitions from a collinear antiferromagnetic state with multiple magnetic domains at a low field to a monodomain state with a canted magnetic structure at a high field. Concurrent with this transition, we observed significant changes in both the energy and the width of the zone center magnon peak. The observed width change was argued to be consistent with an unusual zero-field state with extended domain walls. On the other hand, the magnon spectra near the K point of the Brillouin zone boundary were found to be largely insensitive to the changes in the ordered moment directions and the domain configuration. We argue that this observation is difficult to explain within the framework of the bond-dependent model proposed in a recent INS study [M. Elliot et al., Nat. Commun. 12, 3936 (2021)]. Our paper therefore calls for alternative explanations for the observed K-point gap in CoTiO 3 .

Magnon gap tuning in lithium-doped MnTe

Manganese telluride (MnTe) is a prospective platform for ultrafast carrier dynamics, spin-based thermoelectrics, and magnon-drag transport due to its unique electronic and magnetic properties. We use inelastic neutron scattering to study both pure and lithium-doped MnTe, focusing on the influence of doping in opening a magnon gap. We use neutron powder diffraction to determine critical exponents for the phase transition in both pure and Li-doped MnTe and complement this information with muon spin rotation/relaxation. In conclusion, the opening of the magnon gap and spin reorientation in Li-doped MnTe is mainly due to increased magnetic anisotropy along the [001] axis, a feature not present in pure MnTe.

Non-volatile magnon transport in a single domain multiferroic

Antiferromagnets have attracted significant attention in the field of magnonics, as promising candidates for ultralow-energy carriers for information transfer for future computing. The role of crystalline orientation distribution on magnon transport has received very little attention. In multiferroics such as BiFeO 3 the coupling between antiferromagnetic and polar order imposes yet another boundary condition on spin transport. Thus, understanding the fundamentals of spin transport in such systems requires a single domain, a single crystal. We show that through Lanthanum (La) substitution, a single ferroelectric domain can be engineered with a stable, single-variant spin cycloid, controllable by an electric field. The spin transport in such a single domain displays a strong anisotropy, arising from the underlying spin cycloid lattice. Our work shows a pathway to understanding the fundamental origins of magnon transport in such a single domain multiferroic.

The role of excitation vector fields and all-polarisation state control in cavity magnonics

Recently the field of cavity magnonics, a field focused on controlling the interaction between magnons and photons confined within microwave resonators, has drawn significant attention as it offers a platform for enabling advancements in quantum- and spin-based technologies. Here, we introduce excitation vector fields, whose polarisation and profile can be easily tuned in a two-port cavity setup, thus acting as an effective experimental dial to explore the coupled dynamics of cavity magnon-polaritons. Moreover, we develop theoretical models that accurately predict and reproduce the experimental results for any polarisation state and field profile within the cavity resonator. This versatile experimental platform offers a new avenue for controlling spin-photon interactions by manipulating the polarisation of excitation fields. By introducing real-time tunable parameters that control the polarisation state, our experiment delivers a mechanism to readily control the exchange of information between hybrid systems.

Thermally generated magnonic spin currents in a polycrystalline gadolinium iron garnet thin film with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy

Rare-earth iron garnets (REIGs) are the benchmark systems for magnonics, including the longitudinal spin Seebeck effect (LSSE). While most research has focused on single-crystalline REIGs on complimentary garnet substrates, moving to more, cost-effective complementary metal-oxide semiconductor (CMOS)-compatible substrates is important to integrate REIG thin films with existing technology. In this regard, we grow a 130 nm-thick polycrystalline gadolinium iron garnet (GdIG) film on the Si/SiO2 substrate and investigate the temperature-dependent LSSE. Interestingly, the polycrystalline GdIG film exhibits perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) at room temperature which is induced by tensile in-plane (IP)-strain originating from the thermal-expansion mismatch between the GdIG film and the substrate during rapid thermal annealing. Further, a spin-reorientation transition from the out-of-plane IP direction below TS = 180 K is observed. Additionally, the film reveals a magnetic compensation temperature, TComp, of ≈240 K. The LSSE voltage not only demonstrates a sign-inversion around TComp, but also shows noticeable changes around TS. As compared to a single-crystalline GdIG film, the lower LSSE voltage for the polycrystalline GdIG is attributed to the higher effective magnetic anisotropy and enhanced magnon scattering at the grain boundaries. Our study not only paves the way for the cost-effective growth of CMOS-compatible REIG-based systems with PMA for magnonic memory and information processing applications, but also highlights the fact that the spincaloritronic and spin-insulatronic properties of the polycrystalline REIGs follow those of their single-crystalline counterparts with reduced spin-to-charge conversion efficiency through LSSE which can be tuned further by controlling the average gran size and interface engineering.

Spin pumping driven by magnon-polaritons in a ferromagnet–coplanar superconducting resonator hybrid system

We demonstrate spin pumping driven by a strongly coupled magnon-photon system using a ferromagnet-coplanar superconducting resonator hybrid system at 1.4 K. Electrical readout via the inverse spin-Hall effect reveals characteristic coupling features, including mode splitting and linewidth broadening, demonstrating the electrical detection of strongly coupled microwave photons and magnons. The microwave magnon-photon coupling strength obtained by combined spin pumping and inverse spin-Hall effect measurements is compared to microwave transmission experiments. Here, microwave power-dependent measurements reveal a decrease in the coupling strength with increasing microwave power alongside the onset of nonlinearities of the superconducting resonator above a critical microwave power threshold.

Topological magnons on the ferromagnetic zigzag lattice

Motivated by the experimental identification of magnetic compounds consisting of zigzag chains, we analyze the band structure topology of magnons in ferromagnets on a zigzag lattice. We account for the general lattice geometry by including spatially anisotropic Heisenberg exchange interactions and by Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction on inversion asymmetric bonds. Within the linear spin-wave theory, we find two magnon branches, whose band structure topology (i.e., Chern numbers) we map out in a comprehensive phase diagram. Notably, besides topologically trivial and gapless phases, we identify topologically nontrivial phases that support chiral edge magnons. We show that these edge states are robust against elastic defect scattering.

Orbital Angular Momentum of Magnons in Collinear Magnets

We study the orbital angular momentum of magnons for collinear ferromagnet (FM) and antiferromagnetic (AF) systems with nontrivial networks of exchange interactions. The orbital angular momentum of magnons for AF and FM zigzag and honeycomb lattices becomes nonzero when the lattice contains two inequivalent sites and is largest at the avoided-crossing points or extremum of the frequency bands. Hence, the arrangement of exchange interactions may play a more important role at producing the orbital angular momentum of magnons than the spin-orbit coupling energy and the resulting noncollinear arrangement of spins.

Hybrid magnon-phonon localization enhances function near ferroic glassy states

Ferroic materials on the verge of forming ferroic glasses exhibit heightened functionality that is often attributed to competing long- and short-range correlations. However, the physics underlying these enhancements is not well understood. The Ni 45 Co 5 Mn 36.6 In 13.4 Heusler alloy is on the edge of forming both spin and strain glasses and exhibits magnetic field–induced shape memory and large magnetocaloric effects, making it a candidate for multicaloric cooling applications. We show using neutron scattering that localized magnon-phonon hybrid modes, which are inherently spread across reciprocal space, act as a bridge between phonons and magnons and result in substantial magnetic field–induced shifts in the phonons, triple the caloric response, and alter phase stability. We attribute these modes to the localization of phonons and magnons by antiphase boundaries coupled to magnetic domains. Because the interplay between short- and long-range correlations is common near ferroic glassy states, our work provides general insights on how glassiness enhances function.

Observation of the magnonic Dicke superradiant phase transition

Two-level atoms ultrastrongly coupled with single-mode cavity photons are predicted to exhibit a quantum phase transition, entering a phase in which both the atomic polarization and the photonic field are finite even without external driving. However, this phenomenon, the superradiant phase transition (SRPT), is forbidden by a no-go theorem due to the existence of the diamagnetic term. Here, we present spectroscopic evidence for a magnonic SRPT in ErFeO 3 , where the role of the photonic mode (two-level atoms) in the photonic SRPT is played by an Fe 3+ magnon mode (Er 3+ spins). The absence of the diamagnetic term in the Fe 3+ -Er 3+ exchange coupling ensures that the no-go theorem does not apply. Ultrabroadband terahertz and gigahertz magnetospectroscopy experiments revealed the signatures of the SRPT in thermal equilibrium, a kink and a softening, respectively, of two spin-magnon hybridized modes at the critical point. Systems near this phase are expected to harbor large-scale squeezing, which will potentially provide a route to next-generation quantum technologies.

Topological magnon band structure of emergent Landau levels in a skyrmion lattice

We report the motion of a spin excitation across topologically nontrivial magnetic order exhibits a deflection that is analogous to the effect of the Lorentz force on an electrically charged particle in an orbital magnetic field. We used polarized inelastic neutron scattering to investigate the propagation of magnons (i.e., bosonic collective spin excitations) in a lattice of skyrmion tubes in manganese silicide. For wave vectors perpendicular to the skyrmion tubes, the magnon spectra are consistent with the formation of finely spaced emergent Landau levels that are characteristic of the fictitious magnetic field used to account for the nontrivial topological winding of the skyrmion lattice. This provides evidence of a topological magnon band structure in reciprocal space, which is borne out of the nontrivial real-space topology of a magnetic order.

Topological magnons and topological electronic properties in metallic Kagome magnets

The primary goal of this project is to study metallic Kagome magnets that potentially host topological electronic properties and topological magnetic excitations, aiming to understand the effect of lattice geometry on topological character of magnons and electronic bands and to study the interplay between magnetism and topological electronic properties. Through this DOE-funded research program, we have unraveled novel electronic and thermoelectric properties of RMn 6 Sn 6 (R = Y, Tb, and Er) and Fe 3 Ge Kagome magnets, including anomalous Hall effect and anomalous Nernst effect, which are associated with the Berry curvature contribution from the massive Dirac gaps in the 3D momentum space. In addition, we have also revealed topological Hall effect and topological Nernst effect, and we ascribed these phenomena to the Berry curvature associated with the magnetic field-induced non-zero scalar spin chirality. These features highlight the synergic effects of the Berry phases in both momentum space and real space of Kagome magnets, which render them excellent candidates for room-temperature electronic and thermoelectric applications based on transverse transport. In addition, through this program we have also study novel thermal transport properties of quantum materials by probing the thermal Hall effect, which can provide crucial insights into nontrivial topological character and chirality of quasiparticles like magnons and magnon-polarons. This report provides an overview of some project activities related to these accomplishments.

Raman scattering from phonons and magnons in magnetic semiconductors, MnTe

Comparisons are made between theoretical and experimental data on laser Raman scattering by phonons and two-magnons in antiferromagnetic and paramagnetic phases of MnTe. The study was performed specifically to characterize the magnetic exchange coupling constants of the Mn ions in the samples. Crystal MnTe samples were bombarded with an Ar ion laser beam to obtain spectrometer and photon counter data. One E(2g) phonon with a room temperature energy of 178/cm and a two-magnon peak of 360/cm were observed in the Raman spectrum. A spin wave dispersion relation is presented for the spectrum. Finally, a Monte Carlo technique was used to calculate the two-magnon joint density of states that best fits the experimental data.

Control of magnon–photon coupling by spin torque

We demonstrate the influence of damping and field-like torques in the magnon–photon coupling process by classically integrating the generalized Landau–Lifshitz–Gilbert equation with RLC equation in which a phase correlation between dynamic magnetization and microwave current through combined Ampère and Faraday effects are considered. We show that the gap between two hybridized modes can be controlled in samples with damping parameter in the order of 10 –3 by changing the direction of the dc current density J if a certain threshold is reached. Furthermore, our results suggest that an experimental realization of the proposed magnon–photon coupling control mechanism is feasible in yttrium iron garnet/Pt hybrid structures.

A magnon scattering platform

Significance This work describes a general scattering platform that uses magnons to explore the underlying properties of target materials. In this work we show how both phase and amplitude of magnons can be imaged using a nitrogen vacancy center magnetometer and how the scattered pattern of waves can be used to infer geometric and magnetic properties of a target material. To demonstrate this new experimental methodology we use a permalloy disk as our target and show that even with such a simple target unexpected behavior is observed. In addition, we provide a theoretical framework to reconstruct the properties of the target.

Magnon heat transport in a two-dimensional Mott insulator

Whether or not anomalies in the thermal conductivity in insulating cuprates can be attributed to antiferromagnetic order and magnons in a 2D Mott insulator remains an intriguing open question. To shed light on this issue, we investigate the thermal conductivity $\kappa$ and its relationship with the specific heat $c_v$ in the half-filled 2D single-band Hubbard model, using the numerically exact determinant quantum Monte Carlo algorithm and maximum entropy analytic continuation. At low temperatures where the charge degrees of freedom are gapped-out and $c_v$ exhibits a clear magnon peak, we observe that thermal conductivity $\kappa$ also tends to form a peak at similar temperatures. Reducing temperature further produces a sharp upturn in $\kappa$, associated with an increasing mean-free path. Here we identify this as the high-temperature side of the anomalous peak in insulating cuprates, where the mean-free path eventually is cut-off by other scattering effects, including phonons, disorder, and physical size. Different scattering effects in our model are identified and analyzed in the thermal diffusivity.
