NNSA Light Source Enhancements: Coupling a High Energy Laser Driver to an XFEL

NNSA has an unmet capability gap to predict how changes in material microstructure, due to aging and new manufacturing practices, can affect performance at extremes. This capability gap is the basis for the Dynamic Mesoscale Material Science Capability (DMMSC) CD-0 that was signed in 2015 [1]. Because of the delay to the MaRIE facility approach, the Tri-Lab in March 2020 proposed separate complementary investments at the APS and LCLS to address portions of the DMMSC mission need [2].

Probing turbulence with lasers and coherent light sources

Fluid and plasma turbulence consists of multi-scale interactions where the energy of the large scales is dissipated through a cascade to the smallest scales set by the microphysics. Turbulence and mixing can be detrimental to system performance, such as in inertial confinement fusion (ICF). Our current understanding of turbulence is mostly derived from studies of incompressible flows, where the intermediate-scaled eddies in the “inertial range” bridge the transfer of energy from the large eddies to the dissipative range, and that there is no communication between eddies of disparate scales. Whether a similar cascade process exists for compressible turbulence, however, remains to be seen; experiments have been limited by diagnostics and supersonic flow facilities. This project has focused on the development of techniques to measure the evolution of flows and microphysical transport properties using particle tracking velocimetry. This project has investigated three main areas: (1) particle-tracking experiments with x-ray radiography, (2) shock-particle interactions, (3) quantifying viscous effects on particles in shocked flows.

High-Accuracy Angle Generator for Angular Calibrations to Support Optical Metrology Laboratories and Light Source Facilities

The overarching vision for this project was to build the most accurate full-rotation angular positioning system in the Americas, and that goal remains. In labs performing similar work, the environment is typically closer to a clean room than an office space, like we had before the upgrades. We are now positioned to achieve our intended result with our upgraded infrastructure, system hardware, calibration techniques, and software. As detailed below, the combination of the pandemic schedule and technical challenges have set us back, but we will continue on the path toward our vision beyond the end of this Phase 2. It’s too important for us, for industry, and for the nation not to do so.

Helical superconducting undulator for 3rd and 4th generation of synchrotron light source and FELs

A helical superconducting undulator includes a cylindrical magnetic core through which a bore hole allows the passage of charged particles. A single superconducting wire wraps the magnetic core guided by helical flights and cylindrical protrusions, to create interleaved helical windings on the magnetic core. An electrical current may be supplied to the superconducting wire to generate a periodic helical magnetic field in the bore. The helical superconducting undulator also includes a strong-back enclosure that acts as an epoxy mold during epoxy impregnation, a structural support to ensure straightness of the undulator after epoxy impregnation, and assists in cooling and thermal control of the magnetic core and superconducting wire during device operation.
