Search for type-III seesaw heavy leptons in dilepton final states in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 13\,{\text {TeV}}$ with the ATLAS detector

A search for the pair production of heavy leptons as predicted by the type-III seesaw mechanism is presented. The search uses proton–proton collision data at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, corresponding to 139 fb –1 of integrated luminosity recorded by the ATLAS detector during Run 2 of the Large Hadron Collider. The analysis focuses on the final state with two light leptons (electrons or muons) of different flavour and charge combinations, with at least two jets and large missing transverse momentum. No significant excess over the Standard Model expectation is observed. The results are translated into exclusion limits on heavy-lepton masses, and the observed lower limit on the mass of the type-III seesaw heavy leptons is 790 GeV at 95% confidence level.

Measurement of the Higgs boson production rate in association with top quarks in final states with electrons, muons, and hadronically decaying tau leptons at $\sqrt{s} =$ 13 TeV

The rate for Higgs (${\mathrm{H}} $) bosons production in association with either one (${\mathrm{t}} {\mathrm{H}} $) or two (${\mathrm{t}} {{\overline{{{\mathrm{t}}}}}} {\mathrm{H}} $) top quarks is measured in final states containing multiple electrons, muons, or tau leptons decaying to hadrons and a neutrino, using proton–proton collisions recorded at a center-of-mass energy of $13\,\text {Te}\text {V} $ by the CMS experiment. The analyzed data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 137$\,\text {fb}^{-1}$. The analysis is aimed at events that contain ${\mathrm{H}} \rightarrow {\mathrm{W}} {\mathrm{W}} $, ${\mathrm{H}} \rightarrow {\tau } {\tau } $, or ${\mathrm{H}} \rightarrow {\mathrm{Z}} {\mathrm{Z}} $ decays and each of the top quark(s) decays either to lepton+jets or all-jet channels. Sensitivity to signal is maximized by including ten signatures in the analysis, depending on the lepton multiplicity. The separation among ${\mathrm{t}} {\mathrm{H}} $, ${\mathrm{t}} {{\overline{{{\mathrm{t}}}}}} {\mathrm{H}} $, and the backgrounds is enhanced through machine-learning techniques and matrix-element methods. The measured production rates for the ${\mathrm{t}} {{\overline{{{\mathrm{t}}}}}} {\mathrm{H}} $ and ${\mathrm{t}} {\mathrm{H}} $ signals correspond to $0.92 \pm 0.19\,\text {(stat)} ^{+0.17}_{-0.13}\,\text {(syst)} $ and $5.7 \pm 2.7\,\text {(stat)} \pm 3.0\,\text {(syst)} $ of their respective standard model (SM) expectations. The corresponding observed (expected) significance amounts to 4.7 (5.2) standard deviations for ${\mathrm{t}} {{\overline{{{\mathrm{t}}}}}} {\mathrm{H}} $, and to 1.4 (0.3) for ${\mathrm{t}} {\mathrm{H}} $ production. Assuming that the Higgs boson coupling to the tau lepton is equal in strength to its expectation in the SM, the coupling $y_{{\mathrm{t}}}$ of the Higgs boson to the top quark divided by its SM expectation, $\kappa _{{\mathrm{t}}}=y_{{\mathrm{t}}}/y_{{\mathrm{t}}}^{\mathrm {SM}}$, is constrained to be within $-0.9< \kappa _{{\mathrm{t}}}< -0.7$ or $0.7< \kappa _{{\mathrm{t}}}< 1.1$, at 95% confidence level. This result is the most sensitive measurement of the ${\mathrm{t}} {{\overline{{{\mathrm{t}}}}}} {\mathrm{H}} $ production rate to date.

Search for doubly charged Higgs boson production in multi-lepton final states using 139 fb$^{-1}$ of proton–proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

A search for pair production of doubly charged Higgs bosons ($H$ ±± ), each decaying into a pair of prompt, isolated, and highly energetic leptons with the same electric charge, is presented. The search uses a proton–proton collision data sample at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 139 fb -1 recorded by the ATLAS detector during Run 2 of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). This analysis focuses on same-charge leptonic decays, $H$ ±± → $\ell$ ± $\ell$ '± where $\ell$,$\ell$ ' = $e, μ, τ$, in two-, three-, and four-lepton channels, but only considers final states which include electrons or muons. No evidence of a signal is observed. Corresponding upper limits on the production cross-section of a doubly charged Higgs boson are derived, as a function of its mass $m$($H$ ±± ), at 95% confidence level. Assuming that the branching ratios to each of the possible leptonic final states are equal, $\mathcal{B}$($H$ ±± → $e$ ± $e$ ± ) = $\mathcal{B}$($H$ ±± → $e$ ± $μ$ ± ) = $\mathcal{B}$($H$ ±± → $μ$ ± $μ$ ± ) = $\mathcal{B}$($H$ ±± → $e$ ± $τ$ ± ) = $\mathcal{B}$($H$ ±± → $μ$ ± $τ$ ± ) = $\mathcal{B}$($H$ ±± → $τ$ ± $τ$ ± ) = 1/6, the observed (expected) lower limit on the mass of a doubly charged Higgs boson is 1080 GeV (1065 GeV) within the left right symmetric type-II seesaw model, which is the strongest limit to date produced by the ATLAS Collaboration. Additionally, this paper provides the first direct test of the Zee– Babu neutrino mass model at the LHC, yielding an observed (expected) lower limit of $m$($H$ ±± ) = 900 GeV (880 GeV).

Search for flavour-changing neutral-current couplings between the top quark and the Higgs boson in multi-lepton final states in 13 TeV pp collisions with the ATLAS detector

A search is presented for flavour-changing neutral-current interactions involving the top quark, the Higgs boson and an up-type quark (q = u, c ) with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The analysis considers leptonic decays of the top quark along with Higgs boson decays into two W bosons, two Z bosons or a τ + τ - pair. It focuses on final states containing either two leptons (electrons or muons) of the same charge or three leptons. The considered processes are $t\bar{t}$ and Ht production. For the $t\bar{t}$ production, one top quark decays via $t\rightarrow Hq$. The proton–proton collision data set analysed amounts to (140 fb -1 ) at $(\sqrt{s}={13}\,\hbox {TeV})$. No significant excess beyond Standard Model expectations is observed and upper limits are set on the $t\rightarrow Hq$ branching ratios at 95 % confidence level, amounting to observed (expected) limits of $\mathcal {B}(t\rightarrow Hu)<2.8\,(3.0) \times 10^{-4}$ and $\mathcal {B}(t\rightarrow Hc)<3.3\,(3.8) \times 10^{-4}$. Combining this search with other searches for tHq flavour-changing neutral-current interactions previously conducted by ATLAS, considering $H\rightarrow b\bar{b}$ and $H\rightarrow \gamma \gamma$ decays, as well as $H\rightarrow \tau ^{+}\tau ^{-}$ decays with one or two hadronically decaying τ-leptons, yields observed (expected) upper limits on the branching ratios of $\mathcal {B}(t\rightarrow Hu)<2.6\,(1.8) \times 10^{-4}$ and $\mathcal {B}(t\rightarrow Hc)<3.4\,(2.3) \times 10^{-4}$.

Reconstruction and identification of pairs of collimated τ-leptons decaying hadronically using s=13 TeV pp collision data with the ATLAS detector

This paper describes an algorithm for reconstructing and identifying a highly collimated hadronically decaying τ$$\tau $$-lepton pair with low transverse momentum. When two τ$$\tau $$-leptons are highly collimated, their visible decay products might overlap, degrading the reconstruction performance for each of the τ$$\tau $$-leptons. A dedicated treatment attempting to tag the τ$$\tau $$-lepton pair as a single object is required. The reconstruction algorithm is based on a large radius jet and its associated two leading subjets, and the identification uses a boosted decision tree to discriminate between signatures from τ+τ-$$\tau ^+\tau ^-$$ systems and those arising from QCD jets. The efficiency of the identification algorithm is measured in Zγ$$Z\gamma $$ events using proton–proton collision data at s=13$$\sqrt{s}=13$$ TeV collected by the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider between 2015 and 2018, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 139fb-1$$139\,\text{ fb}^{-1}$$. The resulting data-to-simulation scale factors are close to unity with uncertainties ranging from 26 to 37%.

Factorized QED Contribution to Lepton-Hadron DIS

We present the first calculation of next-to-leading order (NLO) factorized QED contributions to the short-distance hard coefficients of inclusive lepton-hadron deep inelastic scattering (DIS) in a joint QCD and QED factorization approach. We demonstrate how the joint factorization consistently factorize all perturbative collinear sensitivities of partonic scattering in both QCD and QED into corresponding universal hadron and lepton distribution functions without the need of any parameters other than the standard factorization scale. We discuss the necessary modification to DGLAP-type evolution of the parton and lepton distribution functions in this joint factorization approach. We also discuss the potential impact of this joint factorization approach on the extraction of partonic information from lepton-hadron DIS.

Some Implications of the Leptonic Annihilation of Dark Matter: Possible Galactic Radio Emission Signatures and the Excess Radio Flux of Extragalactic Origin

We give theoretical predictions for the radio emission of a dark matter candidate annihilating into 2-lepton and 4-lepton final states. We then compare our results with the known radio measurements of the sky temperature as a function of the frequency. In particular, we calculate the radio emission for some dark matter candidates annihilating into intermediate bosons that subsequently decay into a 4-lepton channel with a thermal annihilation cross-section. We show that within the range of frequencies from 20 MHz to 5 GHz, this channel can produce a stronger signature than direct annihilation into leptons.

Revisiting High-Energy Polarization from Leptonic and Hadronic Blazar Scenarios

X-ray and MeV polarization can be powerful diagnostics for leptonic and hadronic blazar models. Previous predictions are mostly based on a one-zone framework. However, recent IXPE observations of Mrk 421 and 501 strongly favor a multizone framework. Thus, the leptonic and hadronic polarization predictions need to be revisited. Here we identify two generic radiation transfer effects, namely, double depolarization and energy stratification, that can have an impact on the leptonic and hadronic polarization. We show how they are generalized from previously known multizone effects of the primary electron synchrotron radiation. Under our generic multizone model, the leptonic polarization degree is expected to be much lower than the one-zone prediction, unlikely detectable in most cases. The hadronic polarization degree can reach a value as high as the primary electron synchrotron polarization during simultaneous multiwavelength flares, consistent with the one-zone prediction. Therefore, IXPE and future X-ray and MeV polarimeters such as eXTP, COSI, and AMEGO-X, have good chances to detect hadronic polarization during flares. However, the hadronic polarization cannot be well constrained during the quiescent state. Nonetheless, if some blazar jets possess relatively stable large-scale magnetic structures, as suggested by radio observations, a nontrivial polarization degree may show up for the hadronic model after a very long exposure time (≳1 yr).

A limit on the total lepton number in the Universe from BBN and the CMB

At temperatures below the QCD phase transition, any substantial lepton number in the Universe can only be present within the neutrino sector. In this work, we systematically explore the impact of a non-vanishing lepton number on Big Bang Nucleosynthesis (BBN) and the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB). Relying on our recently developed framework based on momentum averaged quantum kinetic equations for the neutrino density matrix, we solve the full BBN reaction network to obtain the abundances of primordial elements. We find that the maximal primordial total lepton number L allowed by BBN and the CMB is -0.12 (-0.10) ≤ L ≤ 0.13 (0.12) for NH (IH), while specific flavor directions can be even more constrained. This bound is complementary to the limits obtained from avoiding baryon overproduction through sphaleron processes at the electroweak phase transition since, although numerically weaker, it applies at lower temperatures and is obtained completely independently. We publicly release the C++ code COFLASY-C on GitHub (https://github.com/mariofnavarro/COFLASY/tree/COFLASY-C) which solves for the evolution of the neutrino quantum kinetic equations numerically.

Efficient lattice QCD computation of radiative-leptonic-decay form factors at multiple positive and negative photon virtualities

In previous work [D. Giusti, Methods for high-precision determinations of radiative-leptonic decay form factors using lattice QCD, Phys. Rev. D 107, 074507 (2023)], we showed that form factors for radiative leptonic decays of pseudoscalar mesons can be determined efficiently and with high precision from lattice QCD using the “three-dimensional (3D) method,” in which three-point functions are computed for all values of the current insertion time and the time integral is performed at the data-analysis stage. Here, we demonstrate another benefit of the 3D method: the form factors can be extracted for any number of nonzero photon virtualities from the same three-point functions at no extra cost. We present results for the $D_s → ℓνγ*$ vector form factor as a function of photon energy and photon virtuality, for both positive and negative virtuality, for a single ensemble with 340 MeV pion mass and 0.11 fm lattice spacing. In our analysis, we separately consider the two different time orderings and the different quark flavors in the electromagnetic current. We discuss in detail the behavior of the unwanted exponentials contributing to the three-point functions, as well as the choice of fit models and fit ranges used to remove them for various values of the virtuality. While positive photon virtuality is relevant for decays to multiple charged leptons, negative photon virtuality suppresses soft contributions and is of interest in QCD-factorization studies of the form factors.

Search for R -parity violating supersymmetric decays of the top squark to a b -jet and a lepton in s = 13 TeV p p collisions with the ATLAS detector

A search is presented for direct pair production of the stop, the supersymmetric partner of the top quark, in a decay through an R-parity violating coupling to a charged lepton and a b-quark. The dataset corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 140 fb -1 of proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}$=13 TeV collected between 2015 and 2018 by the ATLAS detector at the LHC. The final state has two charged leptons (electrons or muons) and two b-jets. The results of the search are interpreted in the context of a Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model with an additional B -L gauge symmetry that is spontaneously broken. No significant excess is observed over the Standard Model background, and exclusion limits on stop pair production are set at 95% confidence level. The corresponding lower limits on the stop mass for 100% branching ratios to a b-quark and an electron, muon, or tau-lepton are 1.9 TeV, 1.8 TeV and 800 GeV, respectively, extending the reach of previous LHC searches.

Search for Scalar Leptoquarks Produced via τ -Lepton–Quark Scattering in p p Collisions at s = 13 TeV

The first search for scalar leptoquarks produced in τ -lepton–quark collisions is presented. It is based on a set of proton-proton collision data recorded with the CMS detector at the LHC at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb − 1 . The reconstructed final state consists of a jet, significant missing transverse momentum, and a τ lepton reconstructed through its hadronic or leptonic decays. Limits are set on the product of the leptoquark production cross section and branching fraction and interpreted as exclusions in the plane of the leptoquark mass and the leptoquark- τ -quark coupling strength. © 2024 CERN, for the CMS Collaboration 2024 CERN

Test of Light-Lepton Universality in the Rates of Inclusive Semileptonic B-Meson Decays at Belle II

We present the first measurement of the ratio of branching fractions of inclusive semileptonic B -meson decays, R ( X e / μ ) = B ( B → X e ν ) / B ( B → X μ ν ) , a precision test of electron-muon universality, using data corresponding to 189 fb - 1 from electron-positron collisions collected with the Belle II detector. In events where the partner B meson is fully reconstructed, we use fits to the lepton momentum spectra above 1.3 GeV / c to obtain R ( X e / μ ) = 1.007 ± 0.009 ( stat ) ± 0.019 ( syst ) , which is the most precise lepton-universality test of its kind and agrees with the standard-model expectation.

Measurement of the top quark pair production cross section in dilepton final states containing one $\tau$ lepton in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}=$ 13 TeV

The cross section of top quark pair production is measured in the $\mathrm{t\bar{t}}\to (\ell\nu_{\ell})(\tau_\mathrm{h}\nu_{\tau})\mathrm{b\bar{b}}$ final state, where $\tau_\mathrm{h}$ refers to the hadronic decays of the $\tau$ lepton, and $\ell$ is either an electron or a muon. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb$^{-1}$ collected in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}=$ 13 TeV with the CMS detector. The measured cross section is $\sigma_{\mathrm{t\bar{t}}} =$ 781 $\pm$ 7 (stat) $\pm$ 62 (syst) $\pm$ 20 (lum) pb, and the ratio of the partial width $\Gamma($t$\to\tau\nu_{\tau}$b) to the total decay width of the top quark is measured to be 0.1050 $\pm$ 0.0009 (stat) $\pm$ 0.0071 (syst). This is the first measurement of the $\mathrm{t\bar{t}}$ production cross section in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}=$ 13 TeV that explicitly includes $\tau$ leptons. The ratio of the cross sections in the $\ell\tau_\mathrm{h}$ and $\ell\ell$ final states yields a value $R_{\ell\tau_\mathrm{h}/\ell\ell}=$ 0.973 $\pm$ 0.009 (stat) $\pm$ 0.066 (syst), consistent with lepton universality.

Search for lepton flavour violating decays of a neutral heavy Higgs boson to $\mu\tau$ and e$\tau$ in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}=$ 13 TeV

Charged lepton flavor violation at the EIC

We present a comprehensive analysis of the potential sensitivity of the Electron-Ion Collider (EIC) to charged lepton flavor violation (CLFV) in the channel ep → τX, within the model-independent framework of the Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT). We compute the relevant cross sections to leading order in QCD and electroweak corrections and perform simulations of signal and SM background events in various τ decay channels, suggesting simple cuts to enhance the associated estimated efficiencies. To assess the discovery potential of the EIC in τ-e transitions, we study the sensitivity of other probes of this physics across a broad range of energy scales, from pp → eτX at the Large Hadron Collider to decays of B mesons and τ leptons, such as τ → eγ, τ → eℓ+ℓ–, and crucially the hadronic modes τ → eY with Yϵ {π, K, ππ, Kπ, …}. We find that electroweak dipole and four-fermion semi-leptonic operators involving light quarks are already strongly constrained by τ decays, while operators involving the c and b quarks present more promising discovery potential for the EIC. An analysis of three models of leptoquarks confirms the expectations based on the SMEFT results. We also identify future directions needed to maximize the reach of the EIC in CLFV searches: these include an optimization of the τ tagger in hadronic channels, an exploration of background suppression through tagging b and c jets in the final state, and a global fit by turning on all SMEFT couplings, which will likely reveal new discovery windows for the EIC.

Testing CP properties of the Higgs boson coupling to τ leptons with heterogeneous graphs

In this paper we explore the possibility of utilizing Deep Learning in measuring the CP properties of the coupling of Higgs boson to τ leptons at the High Luminosity Large Hadron Collider. We employ three Deep Learning (DL) networks, Multi-Layer Perceptron (MLP), Graph Convolution Network (GCN), and Graph Transformer Network (GTN) to enhance signal-to-background separation. The angle between τ lepton decay planes at the detector level is CP-sensitive observables, and we develop Heterogeneous Graphs that integrate diverse node and edge structures to incorporate the CP-sensitive observable efficiently. Using simplified detector simulations we estimate the reconstruction accuracy of the angle between τ lepton planes at the detector level, considering hadronic τ decay modes and standard model backgrounds. With $\sqrt{s}$ = 14 TeV and $\mathcal{L}$ = 100 fb -1 , MLP excludes CP mixing angles above 20° at 68% confidence level (CL), while GCN and GTN achieve exclusions at 90% CL and 95% CL, respectively. The networks also achieve a 3σ significance in excluding a pure CP-odd state.
