Multiple experiment processing furnace crystal growth facility (MEPF-CGF)

The Multiple Experiment Processing Furnace - Crystal Growth Facility (MEPF-CGF) will be an improved modular version of earlier generation directional solidification furnaces having the capability for processing larger samples, for on-orbit exchange of samples by a crew member, and for pre-mission reconfiguration to accommodate a variety of user requirements. The MEPF-CGF will provide the capability for crystal growth in the microgravity environment and will satisfy the processing requirements of the crystal growth community. The MEPF-CGF will be accommodated in the pressurized Spacelab Module (manned environment) on board the Space Shuttle Orbiter. The system will permit operation of the furnace with crew interaction and will utilize Spacelab/Shuttle resources such as experiment mounting provisions, electrical power, data, communication, heat rejection, and crew time.

High temperature aircraft research furnace facilities

Focus is on the design, fabrication, and development of the High Temperature Aircraft Research Furnace Facilities (HTARFF). The HTARFF was developed to process electrically conductive materials with high melting points in a low gravity environment. The basic principle of operation is to accurately translate a high temperature arc-plasma gas front as it orbits around a cylindrical sample, thereby making it possible to precisely traverse the entire surface of a sample. The furnace utilizes the gas-tungsten-arc-welding (GTAW) process, also commonly referred to as Tungsten-Inert-Gas (TIG). The HTARFF was developed to further research efforts in the areas of directional solidification, float-zone processing, welding in a low-gravity environment, and segregation effects in metals. The furnace is intended for use aboard the NASA-JSC Reduced Gravity Program KC-135A Aircraft.

A versatile get away special furnace for materials processing in space

A furnace suitable for performing a variety of high-temperature materials science experiments, including crystal growth in the microgravity of Shuttle orbit, has been developed by GTE Laboratories under the sponsorship of NASA Lewis Research Center. It has been designed for use in NASA's Get Away Special (GAS), small self-contained payload program. A prototype has been designed, built, installed in a simulated GAS container, purged with argon, and used for a series of characterization tests. Also, it was outfitted twice with high-temperature GaAs crystal growth charges and used to successfully grow both. Two different GAS payload configurations have been outlined; one is entirely self-contained and includes one furnace; the other requires external power but incorporates 3 furnaces and their control systems.

Single-Heater, Three-Zone Furnace

Temperature profile shaped with help of thermal barriers. Proposed furnace for use in experiments on growth of crystals of highly pure material in ampoule provides three temperature zones, yet contains only one heat-pipe liner and one heater and operates with only one controller. Three temperature zones established as thermal resistances of wicks and noncondensible gas reduces flows of heat into channel containing ampoule. Motion of ampoule along channel causes gradients of temperature to move along specimen in ampoule. Variety of three-zone temperature profiles in furnace created by changing thermal resistances of zones and injecting noncondensible gas at appropriate point. Furnace used for variety of experiments.

Self-tuning multivariable pole placement control of a multizone crystal growth furnace

This paper presents the design and implementation of a multivariable self-tuning temperature controller for the control of lead bromide crystal growth. The crystal grows inside a multizone transparent furnace. There are eight interacting heating zones shaping the axial temperature distribution inside the furnace. A multi-input, multi-output furnace model is identified on-line by a recursive least squares estimation algorithm. A multivariable pole placement controller based on this model is derived and implemented. Comparison between single-input, single-output and multi-input, multi-output self-tuning controllers demonstrates that the zone-to-zone interactions can be minimized better by a multi-input, multi-output controller design. This directly affects the quality of crystal grown.

Solar furnace satellite for large diameter crystal growth in space

Investigators worldwide are preparing experiments to test the influence of low gravity found in space on the growth of many crystalline materials. However, power limitations prevent existing space crystal growth furnaces from being able to process samples any larger than about 2 cm, and in addition, the background microgravity levels found on the Space Shuttle are not low enough to significantly benefit samples much larger than 2 cm. This paper describes a novel concept of a free-flying platform utilizing well-established solar furnace technology to enable materials processing in space experiments on large-diameter crystals. The conceptual design of this Solar Furnace Satellite is described along with its operational scenario and the anticipated g levels.

Adaptive control of interface by temperature and interface profile feedback in transparent multi-zone crystal growth furnace

The objective of this research is to control the dynamics of multizone programmable crystal growth furnaces. Due to the inevitable heat exchange among different heating zones and the transient nature of the process, the dynamics of multizone furnaces is time varying, distributed, and therefore complex in nature. Electrical power to heating zones and the translational speed of the ampoule are employed as inputs to control the dynamics. Structural properties of the crystal is the ultimate aim of this adaptive control system. These properties can be monitored in different ways. Following an order of complexity, these may include: (1) on line measurement of the material optical properties such as the refractive index of crystal; (2) on line x-ray imaging of the interface topology; (3) on line optical quantification of the interface profile such as the determination of concavity or convexity of the interface shape; and (4) on line temperature measurement at points closest to the material such as measurements of the ampoule's outside and inside surface temperatures. The research performed makes use of the temperature and optical measurements, specified in (3) and (4) as the outputs of furnace dynamics. However, if the instrumentation is available, the proposed control methodology can be extended to the measurements listed in (1) and (2).

Correction-free pyrometry in radiant wall furnaces

A specular, spherical, or near-spherical target is located within a furnace having inner walls and a viewing window. A pyrometer located outside the furnace 'views' the target through pyrometer optics and the window, and it is positioned so that its detector sees only the image of the viewing window on the target. Since this image is free of any image of the furnace walls, it is free from wall radiance, and correction-free target radiance is obtained. The pyrometer location is determined through a nonparaxial optical analysis employing differential optical ray tracing methods to derive a series of exact relations for the image location.

Solidification Interface Shape and Location During Processing in High Gradient Furnace with Quench

High Gradient Furnace with Quench (HGFQ) is being developed to facilitate metals processing experiments aboard the International Space Station. The sample is centered in an annular furnace and is held fixed during processing. The furnace itself is made to translate over the sample. Once in process, heat will flow through the sample from the Heater Zone to the Chill Zone. If operating conditions are correct, the solidification interface will stand in the gradient zone. Objectives of the HGFQ process are to provide a high gradient for the solidification with the solidification interface properly positioned in the gradient zone. At the recent RDR for HGFQ, one of the panelists raised the question about the suitability of HGFQ for potential future PIs. Specifically, it was stated by the design team at RDR that the present HGFQ design would provide a radius of curvature of the solidification interface of at least one sample diameter. The RDR panel argued that this was too small, and that most investigators would need a radius of curvature larger than this. The requirements established by the current PIs are shown. These requirements do not contain any specification about the interface shape. However, these requirements do define the envelope of operational parameters for HGFQ. The objectives of the present investigation are to 1) determine a suitable means of quantifying the interface shape, and 2) investigate the interface shape and how it is affected by processing parameters. The processing parameters to be considered are 1) sample material, 2) sample diameter, and 3) gradient zone length.

Furnace Cyclic Behavior of Plasma-Sprayed Zirconia-Yttria and Multi-Component Rare Earth Oxide Doped Thermal Barrier Coatings

Ceramic thermal barrier coatings will play an increasingly important role in advanced gas turbine engines because of their ability to enable further increases in engine temperatures. However, the coating performance and durability become a major concern under the increasingly harsh thermal cycling conditions. Advanced zirconia- and hafnia-based cluster oxide thermal barrier coatings with lower thermal conductivity and improved thermal stability are being developed using a high-heat-flux laser-rig based test approach. Although the new composition coatings were not yet optimized for cyclic durability, an initial durability screening of numerous candidate coating materials was carried out using conventional furnace cyclic tests. In this paper, furnace thermal cyclic behavior of the advanced plasma-sprayed zirconia-yttria-based thermal barrier coatings that were co-doped with multi-component rare earth oxides was investigated at 1163 C using 45 min hot cycles. The ceramic coating failure mechanisms were studied by using scanning electron microscopy combined with X-ray diffraction phase analysis after the furnace tests. The coating cyclic lifetime will be discussed in relation to coating phase structures, total dopant concentrations, and other properties.

Furnace Cyclic Oxidation Behavior of Multi-Component Low Conductivity Thermal Barrier Coatings

Ceramic thermal barrier coatings will play an increasingly important role in advanced gas turbine engines because of their ability to further increase engine operating temperatures and reduce cooling, thus helping achieve future engine low emission, high efficiency and improved reliability goals. Advanced multi-component zirconia-based thermal barrier coatings are being developed using an oxide defect clustering design approach to achieve the required coating low thermal conductivity and high temperature stability. Although the new composition coatings were not yet optimized for cyclic durability, an initial durability screening of the candidate coating materials was conducted using conventional furnace cyclic oxidation tests. In this paper, furnace cyclic oxidation behavior of plasma-sprayed zirconia-based defect cluster thermal barrier coatings was investigated at 1163 C using 45 min hot cycles. Transparent multi-zone crystal growth furnace and method for controlling the same

A crystal growth system, comprising: a furnace; a plurality of heating elements coupled to said furnace, each said plurality of heating elements defining a heat zone, each said heating element set to a desired temperature value; a plurality of thermocouples associated with respective heat zones to detect a temperature value; a translation system for passing an ampoule containing crystal growth material through said furnace into said heat zones and providing a positional location of said ampoule and; a multi-variable self-tuning temperature controller connected to said plurality of heating elements, said plurality of thermocouples and said translation system, said controller monitoring each said zone temperature value and upon considering the thermal interaction of heating zones and the moving thermal inertia of the ampoule, adjusting voltage input to said heat zones to obtain optimal crystal growth within said ampoule.

Crystal growth furnace with trap doors

An improved furnace is provided for growing crystalline bodies from a melt. The improved furnace is characterized by a door assembly which is remotely controlled and is arranged so as to selectively shut off or permit communication between an access port in the furnace enclosure and a hot zone within that enclosure. The invention is especially adapted to facilitate use of crystal growing cartridges of the type disclosed in U.S. Pat. No. 4,118,197.

High-Precision Temperature Control of a Crystal Growth Furnace at 1,500 C

For crystal growth of semiconductor materials a short-term temperature stability of 0.1 C at 1500 C is one of the essential parameters to be addressed for achieving high-quality crystals. Hence, for temperature monitoring and control with high precision in a floating zone furnace two sets of thermo-sensors, type B thermocouples and optical fibre thermometers, have been implemented and successfully operated in the furnace for more than 2000 h. The optical fibre thermometers consist of an optical system made of sapphire (two fibres plus a prism in between for deflection) and transmit the infra-red radiation of the heater to the outside of the hot core of the furnace for pyrometric temperature measurement. A dedicated control algorithm has been set up which controlled the power settings to the individual heaters. Both sensor types showed no degradation after this period and yielded a short-term stability at 1200 C of 0.05 C (optical fibre thermometers), respectively 0.08 C (thermocouples).

Crystal Growth in the SUBSA furnace in MSG: 2002 to 2022

In 2002, the investigation “Solidification Using a Baffle In Sealed Ampoules (SUBSA)” was the first investigation to utilize the Microgravity Science Glovebox (MSG) Facility on the International Space Station (ISS). The SUBSA furnace was designed for growth of indium antimonide. It features a transparent section, which allows a side view of the melt, the solid-liquid (SL) interface and the growing crystal. In 2002, four Te-doped and three Zn-doped InSb crystals were grown in microgravity. Subsequently, the SUBSA furnace was used in several materials science investigations, including growing the radiation detector materials, InI and Cs2LiYCl6:Ce from the melt and vapor phase (2017 to 2019) and “Brazing of Aluminum alloys in Space (BRAINS)”. A review of the SUBSA furnace features and parameters will be presented, including the design of the growth ampoules, charge preparation, and the procedures used to grow InSb (in 2002) and InI (in 2019).

Synthesis and characterisation of alites from reduced basic oxygen furnace slags

Basic oxygen furnace slags (BOFS) are by-products of the steelmaking process. Several researchers have studied the production of Portland cement clinker and metallic iron from BOFS via a reductive treatment. }In this study, we applied a carbothermal reduction of BOFS in a technical-scale electric arc furnace and characterised the clinker-like products. Those clinker-like non-metallic products (NMPs) had a chemical and mineralogical composition comparable to clinker for ordinary Portland cement (OPC) and contained large elongated alite crystals as major component. The pure NMPs reacted more slowly and achieved a lower degree of hydration compared with commercial OPC. }If the reactivity of the products can be further increased by employing specific adaptations, it can be used as a full clinker substitute for OPC. Nevertheless, it is also an option to use the material without further modifications as a cement component or concrete addition, which contributes to the strength development in both cases.
