Voyager search for posteclipse brightening on Io

Results of Voyager observations intended to settle the question of the transient brightening of the Io disk after its emergence from the Jovian shadow are presented. Two observation sequences were obtained on each Voyager flight through the violet filters of the Narrow Angle Cameras at frame intervals of 96 sec. No posteclipse was detected in the disk-integrated brightnesses in any of the sequences to within a few percent accuracy for a time span of up to 30 min following eclipse reappearance. Analysis of several representative individual areas on the disks of Io and Europa confirms the full-disk observations and is in contrast to telescopic observations showing a brightening of 10% just after eclipse which disappears on a time scale of 20 to 15 min. A small amount of brightening lasting about 3 min is found in the south polar region, along with some posteclipse darkening in neighboring regions. Observations imply that yellow sulfur (S8), the reflectance of which changes significantly over the eclipse temperature range, can not be a major constituent of the Io surface, and that the atmospheric column density of SO2 must be significantly less than 0.2 cm-atm at local noon.

Film annotation system for a space experiment

This microprocessor system was designed to control and annotate a Nikon 35 mm camera for the purpose of obtaining photographs and data at predefined time intervals. The single STD BUSS interface card was designed in such a way as to allow it to be used in either a stand alone application with minimum features or installed in a STD BUSS computer allowing for maximum features. This control system also allows the exposure of twenty eight alpha/numeric characters across the bottom of each photograph. The data contains such information as camera identification, frame count, user defined text, and time to .01 second.

Video Guidance Sensor for automated capture

The paper describes a video-based sensor, the Video Guidance Sensor, which has been developed for use in automated docking systems or for automated capture with robotic systems. The sensor itself consists of several basic components: IR diode illuminators, a solid-state camera, a frame grabber, and a microprocessor. The target consists of three circular retroreflectors evenly spaced in a line with the middle reflector mounted on a short pole. Each retroreflector has a narrow bandpass optical filter in front of it. From this sensor and target configuration, the positions and attitudes of the target relative to the sensor can be determined. The position information can be differenced to with respect to time in order to obtain the relative positional and angular velocities. That information is sufficient to perform automated docking, berthing, or capture. The paper gives details of the sensor's make-up, including accuracies, noise characteristics, and operating ranges.

Focused Schlieren flow visualization studies of multiple venturi fuel injectors in a high pressure combustor

Multiple venturi fuel injectors were used to obtain uniform fuel distributions, better atomization and vaporization in the premixing/prevaporizing section of a lean premixed/prevaporized flame tube combustor. A focused Schlieren system was used to investigate the fuel/air mixing effectiveness of various fuel injection configurations. The Schlieren system was focused to a plane within the flow field of a test section equipped with optical windows. The focused image plane was parallel to the axial direction of the flow and normal to the optical axis. Images from that focused plane, formed by refracted light due to density gradients within the flow field, were filmed with a high-speed movie camera at framing rates of 8,000 frames per second (fps). Three fuel injection concepts were investigated by taking high-speed movies of the mixture flows at various operating conditions. The inlet air temperature was varied from 600 F to 1000 F, and inlet pressures from 80 psia to 150 psia. Jet-A fuel was used typically at an equivalence ratio of 0.5. The intensity variations of the digitized Schlieren images were analytically correlated to spatial density gradients of the mixture flows. Qualitative measurements for degree of mixedness, intensity of mixing, and mixing completion time are shown. Various mixing performance patterns are presented with different configurations of fuel injection points and operating conditions.

On line quantification of crystal surfaces by stereo imaging

The shape of an interface while a crystal is growing inside a crystal growth furnace is an important measurement to assess the crystal quality on-line. If the crystal surface can be visualized by video or x ray imaging, the interface shape can be determined by the stereo image processing techniques. This paper presents a methodology to determine the shape of the solid-melt interface by stereo based imaging techniques while the crystal is growing inside a transparent furnace. The methodology generates qualitative shape information provided that a good pair of stereo images of the interface can be captured. For a quantitative shape description, i.e., for the determination of interface points with respect to a fixed coordinate frame, both cameras must be calibrated. This paper illustrates the methodology for qualitative shape determination of lead bromide crystal interface.

Airborne Laser Altimetric Monitoring of the Rapid Evolution of Topography in the Long Valley, CA, Caldera

A consortium of investigators from several universities and Government agencies have conducted a series of aircraft topographic surveys over the Long Valley caldera, California. The region has a geologic history of extensive volcanism, and its central dome has recently been undergoing resurgent uplift episodes of up to 4 cm per year, a deformation rate that is still continuing. These surveys were conducted from the NASA WFF T39 jet aircraft, outfitted with a nadir-profiling altimetric laser (ATLAS), a GPS guidance system for in-flight precision navigation, two P-code GPS receivers, a Litton LTN92 inertial unit for attitude determination, and both video and still-frame aerial cameras. In addition, two base-station GPS receivers were deployed for post-flight differential navigation, complementing the permanent GPS station operated on the resurgent dome by JPL, and a kinematic automobile survey of roads crossing the area was conducted, thereby complementing the JPL kinematic GPS surveys of some of the same roads. Precision flying yielded multiple profiles along nearly identical paths, including crossing profiles over selected locations within the caidera and calibration flights over Mono Lake, and Lake Crowley. Data from the most recent survey in 1995 are at this time still being reduced, but the standard error of the mean is very low (< 3 mm), due to the high number of crossover points. We thus intend to evaluate the technique for measuring systematic changes in the dome height over time.

Exploring Asteroid Interiors: The Deep Interior Mission Concept

Deep Interior is a mission to determine the geophysical properties of near-Earth objects, including the first volumetric image of the interior of an asteroid. Radio reflection tomography will image the 3D distribution of complex dielectric properties within the ~1 km rendezvous target and hence map structural, density or compositional variations. Laser altimetry and visible imaging will provide high-resolution surface topography. Smart surface pods culminating in blast experiments, imaged by the high frame rate camera and scanned by lidar, will characterize active mechanical behavior and structure of surface materials, expose unweathered surface for NIR analysis, and may enable some characterization of bulk seismic response. Multiple flybys en route to this target will characterize a diversity of asteroids, probing their interiors with non-tomographic radar reflectance experiments. Deep Interior is a natural follow-up to the NEARShoemaker mission and will provide essential guidance for future in situ asteroid and comet exploration. While our goal is to learn the interior geology of small bodies and how their surfaces behave, the resulting science will enable pragmatic technologies required of hazard mitigation and resource utilization.

Mars Science Laboratory Frame Manager for Centralized Frame Tree Database and Target Pointing

The FM (Frame Manager) flight software module is responsible for maintaining the frame tree database containing coordinate transforms between frames. The frame tree is a proper tree structure of directed links, consisting of surface and rover subtrees. Actual frame transforms are updated by their owner. FM updates site and saved frames for the surface tree. As the rover drives to a new area, a new site frame with an incremented site index can be created. Several clients including ARM and RSM (Remote Sensing Mast) update their related rover frames that they own. Through the onboard centralized FM frame tree database, client modules can query transforms between any two frames. Important applications include target image pointing for RSM-mounted cameras and frame-referenced arm moves. The use of frame tree eliminates cumbersome, error-prone calculations of coordinate entries for commands and thus simplifies flight operations significantly.

Synchronized Docking System

A synchronized target subsystem for use in an automated docking system for docking a chase vehicle with a target vehicle wherein the chase vehicle is provided with a video camera for feeding digitized frames to an image processing unit which feeds signals to a control circuit. The control circuit turns on the video camera to digitize a background frame which will include the target vehicle. After the camera grabs the background frame the control circuit turns on a light, which is carried by carried on the chase vehicle and aimed at the target vehicle, and signals the video camera to digitize a foreground frame. A light sensing circuit on the target vehicle receives the light from the chase vehicle and connects a power supply to lights on the target vehicle such that when the foreground frame is digitized the Lights on the target vehicle will show in the foreground frame. Die image processing unit subtracts the background frame from the foreground frame and provides a docking signal.

Synchronized target subsystem for automated docking systems

A synchronized target subsystem for use in an automated docking or station keeping system for docking a chase vehicle with a target vehicle wherein the chase vehicle is provided with a video camera which provides adjacent frames each having a predetermined time duration. A light source mounted on the target vehicle flashes at a frequency which has a time duration which is a multiple of the duration time of the frames, the light being on for at least one frame duration and being off for the remainder of the cycle. An image processing unit is connected to the camera for receiving signals from the camera and subtracting one of the adjacent frames from the other to detect whether the light appears in one frame, both frames or neither frame. If the target light appears in both frames or neither frame, the image processing unit feeds a signal to a timing circuit to advance the video camera one frame. This process is continued until the target light appears in one frame and not in the other, at which time the process of advancing the video camera is stopped.

Laboratory calibration and characterization of video cameras

Some techniques for laboratory calibration and characterization of video cameras used with frame grabber boards are presented. A laser-illuminated displaced reticle technique (with camera lens removed) is used to determine the camera/grabber effective horizontal and vertical pixel spacing as well as the angle of nonperpendicularity of the axes. The principal point of autocollimation and point of symmetry are found by illuminating the camera with an unexpanded laser beam, either aligned with the sensor or lens. Lens distortion and the principal distance are determined from images of a calibration plate suitably aligned with the camera. Calibration and characterization results for several video cameras are presented. Differences between these laboratory techniques and test range and plumb line calibration are noted.

Utilizing ISS Camera Systems for Scientific Analysis of Lightning Characteristics and Comparison with ISS-LIS and GLM

Video and still frame images from cameras aboard the International Space Station (ISS) are used to inspire, educate, and provide a unique vantage point from low-Earth orbit that is second to none; however, these cameras have overlooked capabilities for contributing to scientific analysis of the Earth and near-space environment. The goal of this project is to study how geo referenced video/images from available ISS camera systems can be useful for scientific analysis, using lightning properties as a demonstration.

Synchronized Autonomous Docking System

A synchronized target subsystem for use in an automated docking system for docking a chase vehicle with a target vehicle wherein the chase vehicle is provided with a video camera for feeding digitized frames to an image processing unit which controls a timing circuit. 'Me timing circuit turns on the video camera to digitize a foreground frame and at the same time turns on a transmitter on the chase vehicle. A power generating antenna on the target vehicle receives the transmitted signal from the transmitter and actuates lights on the chase vehicle so that these lights appear in the foreground frame. After the foreground frame has been grabbed, the timing circuit turns the transmitter off and signals the video camera to digitize a background frame. The image processing unit subtracts the background frame from the foreground frame and provides a docking signal.

Regional variations in the magnitude of heiligenschein and causal connections, part O

A preliminary quantitative analysis was conducted of four frames exposed by the Apollo 15 metric camera. Two of the frames show the zero-phase surge on maria and the other two show the surge on terrae. It was found that the curves resulting from brightness plotted as a function of phase angle, differ markedly according to which terrain type is involved. The magnitude of the heiligenschein was found to be significantly greater for the maria than for the terrae.

Stereo Imaging Velocimetry System and Method

A system and a method is provided for measuring three dimensional velocities at a plurality of points in a fluid employing at least two cameras positioned approximately perpendicular to one another. Image frames captured by the cameras may be filtered using background subtraction with outlier rejection with spike-removal filtering. The cameras may calibrated to accurately represent image coordinates in a world coordinate system using calibration grids modified using warp transformations. The two-dimensional views of the cameras may be recorded fur image processing and particle track determination. The tracer particles may be tracked on a two-dimensional basis and then stereo matched to obtain three-dimensional locations of the particles as a function of time so that velocities can be measured there from.

Conceptual Design and Dynamics Testing and Modeling of a Mars Tumbleweed Rover

The NASA Langley Research Center has been developing a novel concept for a Mars planetary rover called the Mars Tumbleweed. This concept utilizes the wind to propel the rover along the Mars surface, bringing it the potential to cover vast distances not possible with current Mars rover technology. This vehicle, in its deployed configuration, must be large and lightweight to provide the ratio of drag force to rolling resistance necessary to initiate motion from rest on the Mars surface. One Tumbleweed design concept that satisfies these considerations is called the Eggbeater-Dandelion. This paper describes the basic design considerations and a proposed dynamics model of the concept for use in simulation studies. It includes a summary of rolling/bouncing dynamics tests that used videogrammetry to better understand, characterize, and validate the dynamics model assumptions, especially the effective rolling resistance in bouncing/rolling dynamic conditions. The dynamics test used cameras to capture the motion of 32 targets affixed to a test article s outer structure. Proper placement of the cameras and alignment of their respective fields of view provided adequate image resolution of multiple targets along the trajectory as the test article proceeded down the ramp. Image processing of the frames from multiple cameras was used to determine the target positions. Position data from a set of these test runs was compared with results of a three dimensional, flexible dynamics model. Model input parameters were adjusted to match the test data for runs conducted. This process presented herein provided the means to characterize the dynamics and validate the simulation of the Eggbeater-Dandelion concept. The simulation model was used to demonstrate full scale Tumbleweed motion from a stationary condition on a flat-sloped terrain using representative Mars environment parameters.
