Advanced multilateration theory, software development, and data processing: The MICRODOT system

The process of geometric parameter estimation to accuracies of one centimeter, i.e., multilateration, is defined and applications are listed. A brief functional explanation of the theory is presented. Next, various multilateration systems are described in order of increasing system complexity. Expected systems accuracy is discussed from a general point of view and a summary of the errors is listed. An outline of the design of a software processing system for multilateration, called MICRODOT, is presented next. The links of this software, which can be used for multilateration data simulations or operational data reduction, are examined on an individual basis. Functional flow diagrams are presented to aid in understanding the software capability. MICRODOT capability is described with respect to vehicle configurations, interstation coordinate reduction, geophysical parameter estimation, and orbit determination. Numerical results obtained from MICRODOT via data simulations are displayed both for hypothetical and real world vehicle/station configurations such as used in the GEOS-3 Project. These simulations show the inherent power of the multilateration procedure.

Formulation of detailed consumables management models for the development (preoperational) period of advanced space transportation system. Volume 1: Detailed requirements for the mission planning processor

Detailed requirements for the mission planning processor are documented. The mission planning processor is a user oriented tool for consumables management and is part of the total consumables subsystem management concept. A quasi top-down approach was applied to the design of the mission planning processor. Interface requirements, input/output, and data base concepts were considered before computational processing. Existing analytical models were investigated for applicability before new models were developed. The mission planning processor was designed for an interactive system using demand terminals for input/outputdisplay and interfacing with an updateable mission data bank. The control and support routines provide the user interface, peripheral data handling, program control, and support functions required by the mission planning processor for execution on an interactive system. A description, interface requirements, definition of internal variables, listing of input data, processing flow diagram, and listing of output data are presented for each routine.

Data processing system and interfacing elements time base analysis

The processing of time in the Orbiter System Services software and the associated facilities provided to the user community are described. The descriptions are directed toward showing the functional intent of the design rather than the actual implementation. Simplified flow diagrams are included. Based upon detailed analysis of a preliminary review copy of the Approach and Landing Test (ALT) System Software Detailed Design Specification and the Program Listings for Version 17 Prime, the processing of time has the potential for error free operations. The processing of time is not expected to change between ALT and the Operational Flight Test (OFT) other than differences in value of some constants for control and limit checking. Due to the dynamic nature of onboard time processing and its criticality to the successful operation of the orbiter, it is recommended that a comprehensive list of external variables, their locations, initial values, and a 'where used' listing be produced, as a by-product of the link edit process, for all non-HAL coding. In addition, a careful review of the verification test procedures for the System Services time-related software is recommended.

The Shuttle imaging microwave system experiment

The purpose of the Shuttle microwave system experiment (SIMS) is to utilize the capabilities of the Space Shuttle to perform passive microwave measurements of thermal emission from the earth's atmosphere and surface, which can be interpreted in terms of meaningful atmospheric and geophysical parameters. The paper is a status report of an ongoing definition phase study of SIMS. The wavelengths and observable parameters for the SIMS channels are identified. The SIMS instrument is discussed with particular reference to the antenna system. A system consisting of a parabolic torus reflector offset fed by a number of feeds and radiometers on a rotating wheel is determined to be the best antenna configuration for SIMS. A tentative data flow diagram for SIMS is also provided.

The Mechanics of Atmospheric Systems Derived Through Vertical and Horizontal Analysis of Parametric Data

For 36 hours during April 1975, an atmospheric variability experiment was conducted. This research effort supported an observational program in which rawinsonde data, radar data, and satellite data were collected from a network of 42 stations east of the Rocky Mountains at intervals of 3 hours. This program presents data with a high degree of time resolution over a spatially and temporally extensive network. Reduction of the experiment data is intended primarily as a documentation of the checking and processing of the data and should be useful to prospective users. Various flow diagrams of the data processing procedures are described, and a complete summary of the formulas used in the data processing is provided. A wind computation scheme designed to extract as much detailed wind information as possible from the unique experiment data set is discussed. The accuracy of the thermodynamic and wind data were estimated. Errors in the thermodynamic and wind data are given.

Robot Display and Control program (ROBDAC)

The ROBOT display and control program (ROBDAC) to be written for the Adage 340 computer is designed to communicate with the Univac 1110 computer with the aid of the graphic support communications programs. ROBDAC and the Adage computer act as an input/output device for the program ROBOT, which is run on the Univac 1110. ROBDAC controls the input to ROBOT by displaying images of the inputs, providing an editing technique for these inputs, shipping the input data to the Univac, and then commanding ROBOT to start execution. The output is done in a similar manner after receiving the output data from the Univac. This data will be displayed numerically as well as by plotted graphs. All of the input/output will be done interactively with practically 'finger tip' control. A general program flow diagram of ROBDAC is included.
