New process produces controlled purity, very high strength, single crystal fibers of materials with melting points to 4000 C. Process has been used to make single crystal fibers of highly refractory ceramics such as aluminum oxide, titanium carbide and yttrium oxide.
Fabrication schedules were developed for producing wire, 0.25 mm to 0.51 mm diameter, from the refractory metal alloys ASTAR-811C, B-88 and W-Hf-C. Tensile properties were evaluated at room temperature and up to 1204 C. Also, the stress rupture properties of the alloys at 1093 C were determined. W-Hf-C and B-88 were found to have the best mechanical properties on a strength to density basis. The fabrication schedules for producing wire from these two alloys were further improved with regards to the wire quality and material yield under the optimization of fabrication schedule.
A CO2 laser heated, floating zone fiber growth process was developed. The resulting Al2O3 fibers exhibited the high room temperature strengths for large diameter fibers as well as high specific creep rupture strengths observed at 1093 C and 1316 C (2000 F and 2400 F). Single crystal fibers of TiC and Y2O3 were also grown. An optical system was developed to focus four CO2 laser beams onto the surface of a feed rod permitting the formation of highly controllable molten zones. The optical system permitted energy densities and angle of incidence of the beams to be adjusted over wide ranges. This optical system was incorporated into a controlled atmosphere, fiber growth furnace. The two principal advantages of a CO2 laser heat source are that ambient atmospheres may be freely selected to optimize fiber properties and the laser has no inherent temperature limit, so extremely high melting point materials can be melted. Both advantages were demonstrated.
Acceptance tests were conducted at Kennedy Space Center of the Saturn Vehicle Workshop Spacecraft Access Arm and related equipment. The tests were conducted to prove complete system capability to operate satisfactorily under conditions required to support spacecraft operations and activities. The SVWS Access Arm, serial number AA-09-03, is a Command Module Service Arm, S/A 9, which was removed from the mobile launcher and modified to support the SVWS operations. The C/M environmental chamber was removed and a completely new chamber was installed. The retract system was redesigned to remove the automatic/remote control capability and replaced with a local manual control. The SVWS Access Arm System was successfully tested and supported spacecraft processing without major problems.

Inexpensive cut-and-paste method allows construction of complex three-dimensional models in less than an hour. Models are constructed from film or paper copies made on office copier.
The cost savings that could be obtained by the use of SIM to perform certain sensor electrical interfacing functions that were historically an integral part of the sensor are evaluated. Reduction in both the nonrecurring and recurring costs of this sensor interface hardware could be achieved through the use of SIM, and the study concludes that the development and use of certain power conditioning and data handling SIM units are economically justified.
Techniques for reducing vector data plotting time are studied. The choice of tolerances in optimization and the application of optimization to plots produced on real time interactive display devices are discussed. All results are developed relative to plotting packages and support hardware so that results are useful in real world situations.

Two-part tool reconfigured for variety of jobs. Tool performs several functions useful in layout. Lines, curves, and angles made visible as either bright scribe marks or as dark pencil (or ink) marks. Multipurpose tool speeds up laying out of patterns on sheet metal, wood, plastic, or paper. Tool is carried in pocket, then quickly assembled for service as height gauge, pair of dividers, protractor, surface gauge, or square.
The compression, or efficient coding, of single band or multispectral still images is becoming an increasingly important topic. While lossy compression approaches can produce reconstructions that are visually close to the original, many scientific and engineering applications require exact (lossless) reconstructions. However, the most popular and efficient lossless compression techniques do not fully exploit the two-dimensional structural links existing in the image data. We describe here a general approach to lossless data compression that effectively exploits two-dimensional structural links of any length. After describing in detail two main variants on this scheme, we discuss experimental results.
