Single $\pi ^0$ production off neutrons bound in deuteron with linearly polarized photons

The quasifree γ → d → π 0 n(p) photon beam asymmetry, Σ, has been measured at photon energies, E γ , from 390 to 610 MeV, corresponding to center of mass energy from 1.271 to 1.424 GeV, for the first time. The data were collected in the A2 hall of the MAMI electron beam facility with the Crystal Ball and TAPS calorimeters covering pion center-of-mass angles from 49° to 148°. In this kinematic region, polarization observables are sensitive to contributions from the Δ(1232) and N(1440) resonances. The extracted values of Σ have been compared to predictions based on partial-wave analyses (PWAs) of the existing pion photoproduction database. Our comparison includes the SAID, MAID and Bonn–Gatchina analyses; while a revised SAID fit, including the new Σ measurements, has also been performed. In addition, isospin symmetry is examined as a way to predict π 0 n photoproduction observables, based on fits to published data in the channels π 0 p, π + n and π – p.

Muon capture on deuteron using local chiral potentials

The muon capture reaction μ – + d → n + n + ν μ in the doublet hyperfine state is studied using nuclear potentials and consistent currents derived in the chiral effective field theory, which are local and expressed in coordinate space (the so-called Norfolk models). Only the largest contribution due to the 1 S 0 nn scattering state is considered. Particular attention is given to the estimate of theoretical uncertainty, for which four sources have been identified: 1) the model dependence, 2) the chiral-order convergence for the weak nuclear current, 3) the uncertainty in the single-nucleon axial form factor, and 4) the numerical technique adopted to solve the bound and scattering A = 2 systems. This last source of uncertainty has turned out to be essentially negligible. For the 1 S 0 doublet muon capture rate Γ D ( 1 S 0 ), we obtain Γ D ( 1 S 0 ) = 255.8(0.6) (4.4)(2.9) s –1 , where the three errors come from the first three sources of uncertainty. The value for Γ D ( 1 S 0 ) obtained within this local chiral framework is compared with previous calculations and found in very good agreement.

Proton- and deuteron-induced cross sections on natural platinum

Light-ion irradiations on natural platinum were performed to measure gold-radioisotope cross sections and isotope ratios, as well as to produce a carrier-free final product. Experimental cross sections are compared to TENDL-2023. There is good agreement with this work's results and other published literature values. In conclusion, several novel cross sections were determined including 190 Au, 191 Au, 199 Pt and several independent cross sections.

Deuteron off-resonance rotating frame relaxation for the characterization of slow motions in rotating and static solid-state proteins

Here, we demonstrate the feasibility of deuterium solid-state NMR off-resonance rotating frame relaxation measurements for studies of slow motions in biomolecular solids. The pulse sequence, which includes adiabatic pulses for magnetization alignment, is illustrated for static and magic-angle spinning conditions away from rotary resonances. We apply the measurements for three systems with selective deuterium labels at methyl groups: a) a model compound, Fluorenylmethyloxycarbonyl methionine-D 3 amino acid, for which the principles of the measurements and corresponding motional modeling based on rotameric interconversions are demonstrated; b) amyloid-β 1-40 fibrils labeled at a single alanine methyl group located in the disordered N-terminal domain. This system has been extensively studied in prior work and here serves as a test of the method for complex biological systems. The essential features of the dynamics consist of large-scale rearrangements of the disordered N-terminal domain and the conformational exchange between the free and bound forms of the domain, the latter one due to transient interactions with the structured core of the fibrils. and c) a 15-residue helical peptide which belongs to the predicted α-helical domain near the N-terminus of apolipoprotein B. The peptide is solvated with triolein and incorporates a selectively labeled leucine methyl groups. The method permits model refinement, indicating rotameric interconversions with a distribution of rate constants.
